WEL COME MAG AZINE LOVERS OF THE WORLD
The past two years many new magazines were published, new platforms arose, re-brands were made and the variety of the magazine world increased even more. This unlimited stream of beautiful mags made by talented people is an everlasting inspiration to us, and the reason why we wanted to organize a new edition of Facing Pages. Print is not dead. It just smells funny. We love it!
This year’s biennale consists of a symposium, exhibition, various mag releases, DIY zine machine, a pop-up store and parties, with which we hope to spread some Magazine Love to the world. We are very proud to host some of the best magazine makers we’ve ever met. We are very thankful for the fantastic team of people that helped us make this biennale happen. The exhibition is the beating heart of the biennale. This years exhibition is an ode to the wide variety of magazines made nowadays. Showcasing the best, weirdest, controversial and most beautiful magazines produced worldwide, Facing Pages aims to get a grip on the fun, determination and creativity that form the starting point of making magazines. For this exhibition, anyone could send in their magazine to be exhibited; the result is more than 200 magazines on display. MEET THE CURATORS Within the exhibition there are some extra curated sections highlighting personal favourites of: O.K. Parking; Joost and William, the big Cahuna’s of Facing Pages, who have been collecting and reviewing a huge pile of magazines in the past years, sharing their unstoppable enthusiasm with the world. Magpile.com; is an online platform to the world of magazines and a community for the people who read them. Magpile’s wiki-style database of magazines is an important online resource for publishers and their readers and brings all of the world’s magazines together in one place. Athenaeum Newscentre offers the most unique collection of magazines in the Netherlands. From all over the world, they find and sell magazines in the field of opinion, politics, history, art, lifestyle, music, design, architecture. What are you waiting for? Go there! This years symposium is about the power of print. With the theme ‘Make magazines not War’ a broad variety of international speakers will focus on the magazine as a tool for change. Do you want to escape todays reality or are you eager to improve your own world? Are you in or are you out? MAKE MAGAZINES NOT WAR In the sixties, the slogan ‘Make love not war’ was used by hippies who tried to find new attitudes towards society. In doing so, they communicated a straight message to authority: something needs to change. We think independent magazines are a contemporary tool to do just that: find new attitudes for change. Two important attitudes surfaced the past few years within the magazine-scene: activism and escapism. Equally strong, they both take a refreshing approach towards the world we live in, compressed in print, spread out and shared with a broad variety of readers. ACTIVISM VS ESCAPISM The first day of the symposium will focus on activism; speakers will talk about the power of punk, the clash with society, and finding a new vocabulary to talk about sensitive subjects. The second day of the symposium revolves around escapism as an ode to fiction, a safe getaway and a tool for personal growth. With both themes as a starting point, our speakers will show you how independent magazines keep on developing new insights into our contemporary culture and how they express these themes in design, storytelling, publishing and fiction. SIMON ESTERSON Eye Magazine 28 & 29 March / 11:15 Art Director of the outstanding graphic design quarterly Eye Magazine, Simon Esterson has enjoyed an illustrious career; primarily specializing in editorial projects. As the true expert that he is, Simon will introduce both themes of the symposium, taking activism and escapism from a historical point of view to the future of print. PAUL GANGLOFF Punk and the creative industry Friday 28 March / 11:45 In the late 1970s punk’s DIY practices of publishing offered a radical alternative to the boring, commercialized culture created by corporate media. Now, under the term ‘Creative Industry’, we are chosen as the perfect partner for an arranged marriage with capital risk investors from the world of finance in search of new resources to exploit. Is it still possible for us to offer an alternative? PATRICK WATERHOUSE Colors Magazine Friday 28 March / 12:00 Over the past three years, people in more than 80 countries across the world have taken to the streets to protest against their governments. But only in six of these countries governments finally fell. COLORS 88 - Protest tells stories of how protests start, spread, triumph, are repressed and sometimes become revolutions. Patrick will talk about why he thinks magazines are survival guides. MARTIJN BRUGMAN entr’acte Friday 28 March / 12:30 Arnhems most awesome writer Martijn Brugman is on stage again at Facing Pages. He will talk about the battle between writers, designers and ‘white space’. BESA LUCI Kosovo 2.0 Friday 28 March / 14:00 Kosovo 2.0 is a Balkan-
based magazine, and one of the very few independent magazines in the area. Kosovo 2.0 pulses with voices unfettered and unafraid. Interactive blogs, articles and multimedia bring you the untold stories and views of your world and their world. Besa will talk about how her magazine addresses topics that are difficult or ignored in her society. LISA CHARLOTTE ROST The Magazine Design Project Friday 28 March / 14:30 Lisa Charlotte Rost is a German graphic designer with a focus on magazine and information design. She has studied in Weimar, Toronto and Oxford and did internships at Gestalten in Berlin and Bloomberg Businessweek in New York. In her Master’s Thesis she’s investigating the possibilities of feedback in magazine design. PETER BI’LAK Works That Work Friday 28 March / 14:45 Works That Work is an international magazine for the curious mind, intending to surprise its readers with a rich mix of diverse subjects connected by the theme of unexpected creativity that improved our lives. Peter Bil’ak will talk about how the independent magazine freed itself from the traditional way of publishing and distribution. BIOP entr’acte Friday 28 March / 15:15 Artist BIOP makes art in public space; but you have to know it to see it. Artificial crows, unreal traffic signs and other public interventions that have been unnoticed so far, we’ll be shown during Facing Pages. JEROEN BOOT Soigneur Friday 28 March / 15:20 Soigneur is a Dutch magazine about cycling. With persuasive looks, the magazine revolves around personal stories of racing, biking and the love for sports. Jeroen
will talk about how they roll, why and how the magazine grew over the past two years and how it inspires people to go outside. IBRAHIM NEHME The Outpost Friday 28 March / 15:35 The Outpost is a Beirut-based independent magazine about possibilities in the Arab world. It was named as “a successor to The Economist” by the Guardian. Since its launch in 2012 it has grown a lot and gained a good reputation in media across the world. Chief Editor of The Outpost, Ibrahim will talk about publishing, self-censorship and a rapidly changing society. RACHEL MARIA TAYLOR JODY DAUNTON Another Escape Saturday 29 March / 11:45 We all get those moments in life when we experience, if only for a second, something that utterly inspires us; we want to be a musician, a dancer, a beekeeper, a circus performer. It may be the overwhelming desire to collect new experiences, travel, or learn a new skill or language. But what if we actually acted on these inspirations-turned-aspirations? FRANCESCO FRANCHI Designing News Saturday 29 March / 12:00 Francesco Franchi’s perceptive book about the future of news and media industries in our digital age. In Designing News, award-winning editorial and infographics designer Francesco Franchi conveys his vision for the future of news and media industries. He evaluates the fundamental changes that are taking place in our digital age in terms of consumer expectations and the way media are being used. CATHY OLMEDILLAS Anorak Saturday 29 March / 12:30 Anorak’s main philosophy is to encourage children to tap into their imagination

Delayed Gratification is a publication that’s designed to be collected and treasured. DENNIS GAENS Kutgitaar Saturday 29 March / 14:45 The critically acclaimed poet and editor-in-chief of Kutgitaar (translate: ‘cunt guitar’) Dennis Gaens will read a short piece on everyday escapism. It involves street musicians and nearly missing trains.

PUBLICATION: MAKE MAGAZINES NOT WAR After the event During Facing Pages the team of Live Magazines will interview speakers and visitors. The result will be a publication designed by two Graphic Design students from ArtEZ Arnhem. It will contain tons of information; results and reflections on the contemporary independent magazines culture. The publication will be for sale after the event and can be ordered via www.facingpages.org AUDIOZINE: ONDERCAST After the event Dennis Gaens will make an audiozine of Facing Pages. Expect lots of audio fragments of the talks, interviews and some suprises.
