Georgian
This design style is admired for its symmetrical design, decrotive elements, and its classic proportions. This style usually uses stine or brick and the windows and doors are arranged to be symmetrical.This style is directly tied to the work of architect Sir Christopher Wren. This style was popular between 1700 and the Revolutionary war. This style was revived in the late 19th century as Colonial Revival architecture.

Federal
This style was popular from around 1780-1840. Many historians think of this style as a refinement of the Georgian style. Tyoically, the shape of the house is a square or rectangular box. There are normally about 2-3 stories in these houses. There is usually not a lot of exterior design, other than a porch and an entry element. It also has narrow columns and molding.
Greek Rivival
This style was popular from about 1825-1860. These houses were usually painted white to resemble the expensive marble of costly public buildings. It has bold details with simple moldings. The materials used for these house are stucco, wood and occasinaly stone. Low pitched gable and hip roofs were typical amoung this design style. The most common part of these houses are its columns and pilasters.
Italianate
This house style became popular around the 1830s. These are typically 2 storie houses, but some were 3 stories. Brick and wood clapboard were the most common building materials used for this house. The roofs were low pitched, often with a square cupola on top. Some of these houses had U-shaped crown windows with brackets, or pedimented crowns with decorated hoods.
Victorian
This style was popular during the mid 1800s. In the west these houses were generally made from wood, and in the east they were generally made from clay or brick. With these houses people began to see more octogonal and round tower designs. The windows of these houses were very decrotive and varied in shape and size. These houses usually have 2 stories, and sometimes they have 3. They also have high ceilings, and feel cozy.
Colonial Revival
This styke became popular around the 1950s. Clapboard and shingle are usually found on these house styles. Brick is the prefeerred building material for these houses. These houses typically had gable roofs. The windows were designed simply.
Prairie
This house style was popular from around 1900-1930. These houses usually have a four room floor plan. These houses are very common in neighborhoods. These houses were designed to blend in with the landscape. The design features multiple stories, low-slung roofs, horizontal lines and stome and brick foundations. These houses have large windows to help bring in natural light.
Craftsman
These house styles use simple forms and natural materials. These houses typically have a lowpitched roof with multiple intersecting gables. The houses are generally made of wood, but piers may be created from stone or brick. These houses have few hallways with rooms flowing one into another. This style usually feels more organic due to the use of natural materials.
Ranch
These houses started to become popular around 1930s. These houses became the dominant american home style from the 1950s-1960s from California to New Jersey. These home styles are usually one level with a more open floor plan. These houses usually feature a low-pitched side-gable or hipped rooof. Large picture windows are also common in these houses.
Shed
This house style has only a single roof plane, that is pitched in only one direction. This house style started to appear around the 1960s. These house designs are good for solar panels due to the flat straigth roof, These houses have open floor plans, high ceilings and lots of windows to help bring in natural light.
A-Frame
These houses have angled rooflines that slope almost all of the way to the ground. These types of houses are usually used for vacation houses. These houses are good in places where is snowss a lot because the slanted roof keeps the snow from building up on top.
Geodesic
This type of home has a spherical structure. The structure is made out of a complex network of triangles. The linked triangles make the building to be more structurally strong. The frame work of this house is usually covered in modern siding materials like ETFE. This design style allows massive interior space, with no columns or other supports.
