This intensive, 4-day course covers all aspects of Artificial Insemination (AI) and herd reproduction management. Students will be introduced to aspects of artificial insemination and herd reproduction management to be used in a producer’s own herd. Lectures will provide an understanding of controlled breeding, sire selection, and nutrition. The logistics of getting set up to practice all on your own will be addressed, including required equipment and costs. The hands-on portion of this course will provide the opportunity for students to practice correct semen handling and artificial insemination techniques and procedures.

Pasture to Plate Direct Marketing

Pasture to Plate - Livestock Direct Marketing is a one of a kind short course. You will gain skills over a six-week time frame that will help them to better understand livestock agro-food systems, niche product marketing, and how they can apply direct marketing skills to their own operations. With recent regulation changes in Alberta, producers can now obtain an on-farm slaughter license thus allowing producers more flexibility when selling a live animal directly to a consumer. This interactive short course will give you training, skills, and ideas to start direct marketing your products from your own 'Pasture to the consumers Plate'!

Western Photography Fundamentals

Intake: Winter

A one-day course that centers around the fundamentals of photography with a central theme around the country lifestyle. Learn how to get your camera out of auto mode and control it so you can get the effect that you want in different scenarios from action to portraits and everything in between.

The course will start the day with some theory and discussion in the classroom. Transitioning from there into trying out the settings and getting to know your cameras. To finish out the day we will head back into the classroom and cover some basic editing to give a nice finish to your photos.

Horse Hoof Care & Trimming

Intake: Fall, Winter

Delivery: In-Person at the Olds College Campus

Save money and improve hoof health by learning the basics of hoof anatomy, care and trimming. This 2 1/2 day course will give you a great introduction to trimming and even the opportunity to trim your own horse by the end. You will practice trimming in a supervised setting. If you would like to put your newly acquired knowledge to use immediately, you have the opportunity to bring your own horses on the last day of the course; this way you can trim your horses for the first time with assistance & guidance from your instructor.

Basics of Equine Massage Therapy Workshop

Basics of equine massage offers you one evening of theory and two days of hands-on massage for your horse. This course gives you, a horse owner, the ability to give your horse the comfort for sore muscles and related soft tissue stress, allowing it to return to work sooner. Some equine anatomy knowledge is recommended and it is necessary to bring your own horse.

Introduction to Veterinary Medicine for Teens

What it is like to work in a veterinary clinic or other animal care related business? This veterinary science camp will show you! Through classroom learning, demonstration and hands-on learning opportunities you will learn basic skills and become familiar with various career opportunities related to veterinary science.

If you are between the ages of 13-16, considering a career in the veterinary industry, and want to understand the different roles that are available as career options, then this course may be for you. In this hands-on course, the instructor and guest speakers will help you understand the roles and responsibilities of Veterinary Medical Receptionists, Veterinary Technical Assistants, Registered Veterinary Technicians, Veterinarians and non-veterinary Animal Care Facilities. You will learn some basics of animal care and first aid, including animal behavior, safety, handling and restraint, general animal health assessment and physical exams.

Small Animal Anesthesia Refresher

Hands-Free Radiology Techniques Refresher

In this online asynchronous course, you will gain further knowledge in the aims and goals of hands-free radiology, the benefits of it, implementation, and different hands-free techniques to ensure quality diagnostic x-rays. This 3-hour course is one of a series of courses offered as a microcredential continuing education credit for RVT’s by Olds College.
