:Introduction 2014-15 has been another transformational year for UPSU. Our Student Representatives and Executive Officers have run a variety of successful campaigns, we implemented the first year of our new democratic structures, roles and procedures, students voted for the introduction of a sixth Executive Officer and a new Volunteering Forum, our Board of Trustees appointed our first female Independent Trustee and our staff and students have been recognised for their hard work, dedication and commitment through a variety of renowned awards and ceremonies. Throughout summer 2014 we underwent an impressive renovation of the commercial areas within the Students’ Union, which completely transformed the originally dark underground space into a bright and lively venue. We were able to achieve this with the incredible support and investment from Plymouth University. Since the refurbishment we have positively seen a huge increase in day time usage as well as a more diverse variety of events and activities. This has created a vibrant hub of activity within UPSU, from student led pub quizzes, to very popular Jam House events and innovative student led forum meetings. Since October 2014 our Board of Trustees has been working alongside the Leadership Group to undergo thorough and in-depth research through surveys, focus groups and one to one meetings, to give our students, staff and key stakeholders the opportunity to influence the direction of our new and exciting Strategic Plan. Since the in depth consultation period we have created an informed, relevant and ambitious Strategic Plan that will enable UPSU to meet the needs of our diverse student and staff body. Our vision ‘to transform lives through experience’ is still very much at the heart of what we do. Furthermore, last year’s governance and constitution review has successfully enabled us to focus on improving our democratic structures and procedures over the last

academic year. We successfully elected 12 Forum Chairs to support and run campaigns, activities and projects through their forums and students were empowered to start a new Volunteering Forum. Throughout the year our 837 Course Reps, 19 School Reps, 13 Forum Chairs and 5 Executive Officers have run campaigns to tackle issues around sexual health provisions on campus, access to University buildings and improved University transparency, as well as activities to promote better mental health through the Stress Less campaign, promoting a green and sustainable life through the Green & Bike Week events and ensuring students were registered to vote in theGeneral Election. As well as all of this, it has been an incredible year for staff and student successes, which we celebrated through the SSTAR, Sports, Societies and Volunteering Awards. This year we received 1,015 SSTAR nominations, we recognised 69 students for their sporting achievements, 49 for their accomplishments through their Societies and 17,821 hours of student volunteering were clocked up. In addition to this, our students raised a phenomenal £219,339 for local and national charities. UPSU were also recognised as a successful organisation this year, as we achieved NUS Best Bar None Gold, Plymouth Best Bar None – Best Student Venue, NUS Green Impact Gold and moved into the top twenty students’ unions in the country for the National Students survery. We are incredibly proud of everything our students and staff have accomplished over the last year and the rest of this report will continue to highlight their transformational achievements.

Sarah Bowman UPSU President

:Executive Officers PRESIDENT

Sarah Bowman Over the last twelve months I have led a General Election campaign which influenced an increase in voter registration amongst our students and within Drake Ward, I have worked with the University to improve their communication, governance and financial transparency by organising debates, open meetings and ensuring that they commit to making a yearly video of their annual accounts. As well as this, I gathered feedback from students through surveys and Forums to give thorough and in depth recommendations to the University to transform and improve the way timetables are produced to benefit the needs of students. Overall it’s been an amazingly transformational year, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at UPSU and I’m incredibly proud of what the Union has achieved!

VP WELFARE

Rich Skipper This year I have built stronger student communities and challenged the way halls operate to ensure the best student experience. I ran the Sexual Health Report highlighting issues students face within the city. Brought Generation Vote to our campus, which saw over 1,000 students register to vote. I campaigned on the issue of consent, which is now fully on the Unions, University’s and Plymouth City’s Strategic Agenda. I put Digital Citizenship on the University’s agenda and passing it into NUS’s National Policy supporting student’s employment prospects and tackling online bullying. Co-led the Know the Line campaign tackling harassment on our campus. I couldn’t of done it without the support of everyone at UPSU and Plymouth University, it’s been a fantastic experience!

VP EDUCATION

Ruth Titmuss 2014/2015! What an amazing year for the student voice and academic reps! This year we have carried out for the first time, four Course rep conferences, training 300 Reps and providing continuing support throughout the year to our 800 Reps. We elected all 19 school Reps, and they have done a fantastic job at representation in all their schools. We have seen the launch of a successful Academic forum which has been used for healthy discussion and debate. The Stress Less campaign has been run throughout the year, providing students with a 10 minute break from the stressful deadlines including cupcake decorating, smoothie cycling and colouring in. Plus, we have had the highest number of SSTAR nominations to date with an excellent awards night.

VP SOCIETIES & SPORTS

Emily Hamilton-Peach The students who participate within Clubs and Societies have been amazing this year! I have tried my best to empower these student leaders in a variety of ways; including organising and delivering the first committee training conference and launching a series of ‘How To’ guides. These will help our Clubs and Societies continue to grow from strength to strength. Working alongside the University on the continual evaluation and development of their sporting partnerships has enabled me to improve relationships and help progress them for the better. Both the Sports Awards and Society Awards were a huge success (and a lot of fun) this year with record breaking attendance and well deserved awards! It’s truly been an incredible year and a pleasure to work with so many inspirational students and colleagues.

VP INTERNATIONAL & OUTREACH

Will Holmes

My proudest project this year has been the Hello project which was done in partnership with the English Language Centre. We trained and recruited over 25 English students to mentor and support over 100 international students. Throughout the year I have been creating new links for UPSU and meeting many fantastic international students. As well as gaining valuable feedback and research on international students, I have also helped put on international events such as the Culture Club and our fantastic new Oktoberfest festival.
