Guide to:

Student Finance

(for New Students)

The rules about student finance are complicated so if your situation is a little bit different then please contact us directly with your query. In general students that normally live in England and that are on an ordinary undergraduate degree can expect to get the following funding:

Maintenance Loan

Maintenance Grant This part of your funding is completely based on household income. If you were living at your parental home, Student Finance England will require details of income to the household. Failure to provide this will result in you not receiving this element of your funding. If household income is £25000 or less the full grant is payable

The maximum amounts are as follows:-

£3387

Living at home with parents in Plymouth

If household income is between £25001 & £42611 a partial grant is payable depending on household income

£4350

Living away from parental home (in Plymouth)

£5555

You may get more money than your friend. This is because part of your Maintenance Loan is based on your household income. If you have just left home it will be based on your parent’s income. THIS PART OF YOUR FUNDING IS REPAYABLE.

If household income is more than £42611, no grant is payable The amount of Maintenance Grant you receive will affect the amount of Maintenance Loan you can borrow. The Maintenance Loan is reduced by 50p for every £1 of Maintenance Grant you are entitled to. THIS PART OF YOUR FUNDING IS NON-REPAYABLE.

Special Support Grant

Financial Support Fund

If you were in receipt of means tested or disability related benefits, or a parent when you started University, then you may be eligible to claim a Special Support Grant rather than a Maintenance Grant.

This fund is administered by the University’s Student Funding Unit and is open to any full or part time HOME or EU undergraduate student with no previous HE study taking out a Tuition Fee Loan to pay the £9,000 tuition fee.

It’s important to make sure you claim this if you are entitled to it as it does not count as income for the purpose of claiming means tested benefits such as Housing Benefit, and you may also get more money from Student Finance England.

For more information contact the Student Funding Unit in the Roland Levinsky Building (01752 587680)

Please come in and see us if you think you should be in receipt of this funding.
