В І Д Р Е Д А К Ц І Ї Увесь світ навколо нас — повітря, яким ми дихаємо, їжа, яку ми споживаємо, люди, яких ми любимо — складається із крихітних молекул, а ті, в свою чергу, з атомів. Майже всі атоми на Землі, з якими ми стикаємося протягом життя, існують мільярди років. Під електронним мікроскопом вони виглядають геометрично довершеними й цілком безневинними. Хоча деякі з них і таять у собі силу, з якою слід поводитися вкрай обережно. Уявити розмір «цеглинок», з яких побудовано все живе, можна за допомогою порівняння. Молекула менша від яблука у стільки ж разів, у скільки яблуко менше від земної кулі. Ми не бачимо молекули неозброєним оком, але напряму від них залежимо. Щомиті у нашому організмі відбуваються безліч біохімічних процесів, які впливають на наш вигляд і настрій, стан здоров’я й самопочуття. Можливість зазирати за лаштунки цих процесів — здобуток науки й відповідальність людства.

F R O M T H E E D I T O R S The world around us — the air we breathe, the food we eat, the people we love — is made of tiny molecules, which are in turn made of atoms. Almost all of the atoms on Earth that we encounter during our lifetime have been here for billions of years. Through an electronic microscope, they look geometrically perfect and quite innocent. However, some of them hold power that should be handled very carefully.

It’s easy to imagine the size of the “bricks” that make up all living things by comparing them to something familiar. If we enlarged a molecule to the size of an apple, then in comparison a real apple would be as big as our planet. We can’t see molecules with the naked eye, but we depend on them. Every second, innumerable biochemical reactions happen simultaneously in our bodies. These reactions influence the way we look and feel, and they can impact our health and mood. Thanks to scientific achievements, we have the possibility to look behind the curtain of these processes, and bear a responsibility for what we see there.

У середині 2000-х берлінський парфумер-бунтівник Геза Шоен експериментував із молекулою Iso E Super — синтетичним інгредієнтом, який входив до складу багатьох парфумів, але ніколи не грав першу скрипку. Шоен міксував аромати із незвично високою концентрацією молекули, а якось «вилив» на себе парфум, що складався виключно з Iso E Super. Й отримав купу компліментів, хоча сам запаху не відчував. Еврика! Шоен назвав своє творіння Molecules 01. «Я думав, що цей запах оцінять хіба що митці, фріки й аутсайдери», — зізнається парфумер. Так у 2006 році народився бренд Escentric Molecules. Користувачі розділилися на два табори: прихильники співали загадковій молекулі дифірамби, опоненти називали Шоена шарлатаном. Справа в тім, що в пляшечці Iso E Super може нічим не пахнути — аромат розквітає від тепла тіла. Після нанесення парфум починає жити своїм життям: то зникає, то накочується запаморочливим шлейфом. Для тих, хто любить традиційніші аромати, Шоен створив «брата-близнюка» Molecules 01 — запах Escentric 01. Окрім Iso E Super, він містить ще кілька синтетичних інгредієнтів. За ними послідували серії парфумів-двійнят 02, 03 та 04. У дизайні пляшечок Escentric Molecules втілилася любов Шоена до мінімалізму, абстракції, чітких геометричних ліній та наукових звершень людства. Так, на створення айдентики ароматів серії 04 компанію надихнув Великий адронний колайдер.

In the mid-2000s, Berlin-based rebel perfumer Geza Shoen was experimenting with Iso E Super molecule — a synthetic ingredient that was a part of many perfumes but never played first fiddle. Shoen was creating fragrances that contained unusually high proportions of the molecule.

Once he spritzed a perfume consisting exclusively of Iso E Super, and got lots of compliments although he could not smell a thing. Eureka! Schoen called his creation Molecules 01. “I thought, this one will appeal only to the artists, the freaks, the outsiders,” the perfumer admits. So, in 2006, the brand Escentric Molecules was born.

Consumers fell into two camps: the fans who heaped praises upon the mysterious molecule and the opponents who called Shoen a hoaxer. It is true that a bottle of Iso E Super has no smell on its own — the fragrance reveals itself with the heat of the body. After applying, the perfume behaves whimsically: at times it disappears and sometimes it hovers over with a dizzying plume.

For those who are accustomed to more conventional aromas, Schoen created the “twin brother” of Molecules 01 — Escentric 01 scent. In addition to Iso E Super, it contains several other synthetic ingredients.

It was followed by a series of twin scents 02, 03, and 04.

The design of the Escentric Molecules bottle showcases Shoen’s love for minimalism, abstraction, precise geometric lines, and the scientific achievements of mankind. Thus, the design pattern of the aromas of the 04 series was inspired by the Big Hadron Collider.

he miniature principality half the size of Kyiv is not easy to find on the map: a tiny speck against a backdrop of neighboring France and Spain lying on the southern slopes of the Pyrenees. Yet, despite its modest looks, Andorra can charm seasoned travelers

Найближче — з Барселони: сідаєте в автобус прямо в аеропорту — і за три з лишком години ви в столиці князівства, Андорра-ла-Велья. Кам’яні середньовічні будинки сусідять тут із скляними фасадами шопінг-молів, а бруковані місточки — із сюрреалістичними скульптурами. Завдяки елементам сучасної архітектури Андорра не скидається на застигле в часі іграшкове князівство. You can get to Andorra from Spain or France.

Barcelona is the easiest option: take a direct bus from the airport, and in three hours you are in the capital of the Principality: Andorra la Vella. Stone medieval houses are intermixed with the glass facades of shopping malls and cobblestone bridges — complete with surreal sculptures. Including elements of modern architecture, Andorra is much more than a toy principality frozen in time. By the way, the country governed by the French president and the bishop of the Spanish town of La Seu d’Urgell, is considered a principality only on the books.

Втім, слід також віддати належне якісній системі охорони здоров’я, економічній стабільності та низькому рівню злочинності. Регулярної армії тут немає — останній раз андоррці воювали років 700 тому й зажили слави дружелюбного народу. Окрім того, країна пишається своєю надійною банківською системою й низькими податками. А гроші, як відомо, люблять тишу.

Life in the highest capital of Europe is slow-paced.

The roads are never busy; occasionally the flocks of cows crossing the roadbed can slow down the traffic with the delicate jingle of silver bells. The average life expectancy of the Andorrans is one of the highest in the world: 83 years. Locals believe that the secret is in the proximity to nature and the calm lifestyle. However, one shouldn’t underestimate the high-quality healthcare system, economic stability, and the low level of crime. There is no regular army — the last time the Andorrans took part in military actions was 700 years ago, and since then they have gained a reputation of friendly people. Moreover, the country is proud of its reliable banking system and low taxes. And money, as you know, loves silence.

Each year, a country with a population of no more than 80,000 people welcomes about 2.5 million tourists. The main attractions are the ski resorts Grandvalira and Vallnord, which match the Alpine ones in terms of price-quality ratio. In the warmer months of the year, you can enjoy the Caldea Spa in Andorra, go hiking or horse riding along the eco trails, bike on the mountain track or play golf. And, of course, go shopping. Prices in Andorra are lower than in Spain and France, and sales start a few days in advance. Meritxell Avenue in Andorra la Vella is adorned with outlets where clothes lovers hunt for discounts on clothing, perfumery, jewelry, and watches.

Tiny Andorra has two dozen museums for cars, perfumery, tobacco, and even the microminiatures by Ukrainian craftsman Mykola Syadristy. The old blacksmith’s shop, Farga Rossell, features a display for the stages of production of iron, and the Areny-Plandolit historical mansion exhibits the way of life of a noble family. Book lovers will enjoy the irresistible local library which has over 5,000 editions, some of them dating back to the 1530s.

БЕЗ ГМО GMO-FREE При слові «клон» перед очима постає образ вівці Доллі чи загону імперських штормтруперів із «Зоряних воєн». Насправді ж, «клонів» можна зустріти і в реальному житті: однояйцеві близнюки є генетичними копіями одне одного. Загалом під поняттям «клонування» розуміють отримання генетично ідентичних молекул, клітин й організмів. До клітинного клонування вдаються лаборанти, роблячи бакпосів: із однієї клітини виводять цілу популяцію. Молекулярне клонування, при якому фрагмент ДНК переміщають із одного організму в інший, використовується, зокрема, для вирощування славнозвісних ГМО.

When someone mentions a clone, people may imagine Dolly the sheep or a unit of Imperial Stormtroopers from Star Wars. However, clones can be encountered in real life; take for example identical twins, who are genetic copies of a single embryo. In general, cloning is the process of producing genetically identical molecules, cells, and organisms. Lab assistants use cell cloning during bacterial inoculation when an entire population of cells is derived from a single cell.

Generating the notorious GMOs is part of molecular cloning when a DNA fragment is transferred from one organism to another.

BEWARE OF CHICKENOSAURS! Мати справу з молекулами й клітинами, звісно, цікаво. Але як бути з цілими організмами? Засади клонування заклав на початку XX ст. німецький ембріолог Ганс Шпеман. Він отримував двох однакових ембріонів, розділяючи зародок тритона з допомогою… доньчиної волосини. Шпеман вважав, що ядро яйцеклітини можна замінити ядром іншої клітини. І не помилився: у 1950-х англієць Джон Гердон у такий спосіб клонував жабу із клітини кишківника пуголовка. Завдяки технології трансплантації ядер на світ з’явилися чимало тварин, але клонування ссавців залишалося технологічно недоступним. Тому справжній фурор у 1996 році викликало народження вівці Доллі. Шотландські науковці замінили ядро донорської яйцеклітини ядром клітини молочної залози дорослої вівці. Доллі прожила шість років — вдвічі менше, ніж очікувалося. Але не через генетичні мутації. Її приспали через захворювання легень, типове для овець, що живуть у закритих приміщеннях. Із соматичних клітин створили сотні тварин — щурів, кроликів, корів і навіть верблюдів. У США поставили на потік клонування домашніх улюбленців. Виявилося, що є люди, готові викласти $50 тисяч за копію улюбленого песика. Серед них — Барбра Стрейзанд, у якої нині живуть аж два клони її собаки Саманти. А в 2017 році світ сколихнула новина про народження в Китаї клонованих мавпочок Чжон Чжон та Хуа Хуа. На черзі — людина? Зовсім ні. Науковці кажуть, що клонування мавп допоможе у випробуванні ліків та вивченні хвороб Альцгеймера й Паркінсона. Деякі мрійники не полишають ідею повернути до життя вимерлі види тварин. Науковці з США та Південної Кореї намагаються воскресити мамонта. А відомий американський палеонтолог Джек Хорнер, який консультував знімальну групу фільму «Парк Юрського періоду», мріє реконструювати динозавра. І навіть вдається до спроб генетично перепрограмувати курчат, яких вважає нащадками стародавніх рептилій.

Dealing with molecules and cells is certainly exciting, but what about whole organisms? The foundations for cloning were laid by a German embryologist Hans Spemann at the outset of the 20th century. He was able to produce two identical embryos after separating a newt embryo using a noose of hair taken from his daughter. Spemann believed that egg cell nuclei could be replaced by nuclei of other cells. His idea proved itself right when in the 1950s John Gurdon from England successfully cloned a frog using a cell taken from a tadpole’s intestine.

Nuclear transfer technology gave life to a number of animals, but the cloning of mammals still remained technologically impossible. That is why the birth of Dolly the sheep in 1996 was a major sensation. Scottish scientists replaced a donor’s egg cell nucleus with the cell nucleus taken from a mammary gland of an adult sheep. Dolly lived for six years, half of what was expected. However, genetic mutations were not to blame.

She was euthanized because of a lung disease, which is common for sheep kept indoors.

Hundreds of animals were created out of somatic cells, including rats, rabbits, cattle, even camels. Pet cloning has become mainstream in the US. It turns out that some people are willing to pay $50,000 for a copy of their beloved dog. This includes Barbra Streisand who now owns two copies of her late dog Samantha.

In 2017, the world was amazed with the news of two cloned monkeys born in China, named Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua. Are humans next in line to be cloned?

Unlikely. Scientists argue that cloning the monkeys could help in drug trials and in the study of diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Some dreamers still nurture ideas of bringing extinct animal species back to life. Scientists from the US and South Korea are trying to resurrect a mammoth.

Famous American paleontologist Jack Horner, who worked as a technical adviser on Jurassic Park, dreams of recreating a dinosaur. He even made attempts to genetically reprogram chickens who, in his opinion, are the descendants of ancient reptiles.

LET’S CLONE A HUMAN? Перспективи клонування людини порушують низку морально-етичних та правових питань. Але залишмо ці питання філософам і законодавцям. У науковців — свої проблеми. Штучно відтворити генетичну копію людини вкрай важко. Кожна клітина нашого організму — і статева, і соматична — містить повний набір генів. Але долю клітини визначає не лише закодована в ній генетична інформація, але й епігенетичні «мітки», які відповідають за її зчитування. Якби навіть і вдалося створити генетичних двійників, «клон» би відрізнявся від «оригіналу» вдачею, інтелектом і пам’яттю. Адже нас формують не лише гени, але й середовище. Наше «я» міститься в мозку, який є пластичним — здатним змінюватися під впливом досвіду та виховання. Тому навіть однояйцеві близнюки, які мають ідентичний набір генів при народженні, виростають різними особистостями.

The prospects of cloning a human raise a number of moral, ethical and legal issues. But let’s leave those issues to philosophers and legislators. Scientists have enough problems of their own.

It is extremely difficult to recreate a genetic copy of a human being. Each cell of our bodies, whether it is reproductive or somatic, contains a full set of genes. However, it is not only the genetic information encoded there that decides the cell’s fate but also epigenetic marks that are responsible for reading it. Even if genetic twins could be created, a clone would have a temper, intelligence and memory different from the “original”, as it’s not only the genes that influence our development but also our environment. Our self is contained in the brain, which has the quality of plasticity, meaning it can change under the influence of experience and upbringing. That is why even identical twins who have an identical set of genes at birth grow into different personalities.

Журналісти охрестили новонароджену «дитиною від трьох батьків», хоча фахівці наполягають на терміні «цитоплазматична або мітохондріальна донація». These days, scientists are working on developing a method for therapeutic cloning to obtain embryonic stem cells. They could be used to grow a new kidney or liver using the patient’s genetic material, which could solve the problem of graft rejection. However, in most countries, the manipulation of human embryos is banned or extremely limited. Even if reproductive cloning were legalized, it would be too expensive and inefficient. Thousands of women would be needed to carry the clones. That is why “organ factories” are still only one of the hair-raising themes in sensationalist media.

At the same time, the nuclear transfer technology can be of great help to people. For instance, women with mitochondrial DNA mutations are able to give birth to a healthy child. Reproductive scientists in Kyiv were among the first in the world to use a method of pronuclear transplantation when they replaced a donor’s egg cell with a fertilized mother’s egg cell. Journalists called the newborn baby “a child of three parents”, even though the experts insist on using the term “cytoplasmic or mitochondrial donation”. A child inherits about 20,000 genes from their mother and father and only 37 genes of the donor’s mitochondrial DNA that have no influence on personality or appearance.

Thus, the creation of genetically perfect individuals as portrayed in the film Gattaсa or the production of soulless clones who would enslave humanity, is only the stuff of sci-fi movies. Keep calm and believe in science.

ПОБАЧИТИ THINGS TO SEE Стокгольм розташувався на чотирнадцяти островах у Балтійському морі та на озері Меларен. У місці злиття двох водойм знаходиться острівець, на якому вмостилися Будівля парламенту й Музей Середньовіччя. Звідси відкривається панорама найстарішої частини Стокгольма — Гамла Стану. Засноване в XIII столітті Старе місто є одним із найкраще збережених середньовічних центрів Північної Європи. Блукаючи вузькими брукованими вуличками, ви зрозумієте, чому Гамла Стан так вабить і туристів, і місцевих. Особливо, коли вийдете на площу Стортор’єт, оточену різнокольоровими будинками. У Гамла Стані слід знайти провулок Мортен Тротзігс, який ледве сягає 90 см завширшки, та крихітну скульптуру хлопчика, що дивиться на місяць. Зворушливий 20-сантиментовий монумент ховається у подвір’ї Фінської церкви. Stockholm is spread over fourteen islands in the Baltic Sea and Lake Mälaren. The island, which marks the merger of two reservoirs, has both the Parliament building and the Museum of the Middle Ages. It offers a panorama of the oldest part of Stockholm — Gamla Stan. Founded in the 13th century, the Old Town is one of the best preserved medieval centers in northern Europe.

Wandering through the narrow cobbled streets, you will see why Gamla Stan is so attractive both for tourists and locals. Stortorget place, surrounded by colorful buildings, is remarkable. While at Gamla Stan you should explore Mårten Trotzigs alley, which is just 90 cm wide, and look for the tiny sculpture of a little boy who looks at the moon; a touching 20-centimeter monument hiding in the courtyard of the Finnish Church.

The ideal tourist program would be completed with a visit to the Royal Palace — the official residence of the Swedish monarchs, and a tour of the Stockholm City Hall topped with three gilded crowns. This is where the Nobel Feast takes place each year, and it is the venue where the most prominent scientists and writers from around the world receive their awards.

ВІДВІДАТИ PLACES TO VISIT Стокгольм пишається першим у світі музеєм просто неба — Скансеном. Після його появи наприкінці XIX століття назва «скансен» закріпилася за всіма етнографічними комплексами. На острові Юргорден вмістилася вся Швеція в мініатюрі — сюди перевезли близько 150 споруд із різних частин країни. Любителів історії вразить Музей Васа, експонатом якого є бойовий галеон, що зберігся з 1628 року. «Васа» пішов на дно у день свого першого виходу із Стокгольмської гавані й пролежав там три століття, перш ніж його рештки підняли на поверхню. Дітлахи будуть у захваті від музею Юнібаккен, де на них чекає світ казок шведських письменників, зокрема Астрід Ліндгрен. А от стокгольмське метро, яке нагадує арт-галерею, вразить не тільки дітей, а й дорослих. Підземку завдовжки 105 км почали розфарбовувати, прикрашати вітражами й фресками ще в середині минулого століття.

Stockholm is proud to have the world’s first openair museum, Skansen. After its appearance at the end of the 19th century, the name Skansen is assigned to all ethnographic complexes. The island of Djurgården has all of Sweden in miniature — about 150 constructions were transported here from different parts of the country.

History fans will be impressed by the Museum of Vasa, which offers an exhibit of the fighting galleon preserved since 1628. Vasa sank on the day it exited the Stockholm harbor and lay there for three centuries before its remains were lifted to the surface.

Children will be delighted to visit the Museum of Junibacken, where the fairy tale world of Swedish writers, including Astrid Lindgren, awaits them. The Stockholm metro, which resembles an art gallery, will impress both children and adults. The 105 km-long subway has been painted, decorated with stainedglass windows and frescoes since the middle of the last century.

Although, their dishes of pork, elk, and venison served with berry sauce are just as delightful. It is also worthwhile to try the Kottbullar meatballs and the Fläskrullader roll, and for dessert, fragrant cinnamon rolls with coffee, which the Swedes adore. The evidence for their love is that they even gave a name to the ritual of drinking coffee in pleasant company — Fika.

Хайп розпочався з японського YouTube-каналу Miniature Space, автори якого створюють мініверсії різноманітних наїдок — від суші до картоплі фрі. Готові страви можна з’їсти: на одному відео пудингом ласує песик (а потім дивиться сумними очима, просячи добавки). Робота вимагає ювелірної точності: спробуй-но приготувати млинці з перепелиного яєчка, чайної ложки молока, кількох десятків грамів борошна й дрібочки масла. Та ще і з допомогою кухонного начиння лялькових розмірів. Яке, до речі, коштує недитячих грошей: за 5-сантиметровий ножик доведеться викласти $99. З Японії тренд швидко поширився світом, і зараз відео приготування міні-страв збирають сотні тисяч переглядів. А найпопулярніший відеорецепт каналу Miniature Space — процес випікання шоколадного торту розміром із монетку — побачили понад 24 мільйони користувачів. Що ж робить ці відео такими привабливими? На думку знавців японської культури, секрет — у їхній «кавайності» (від японського «кавай» — милий, гарненький). «А, можливо, в тому, що в цих стравах менше калорій?», — сміється американська скульпторка Керолайн Макфарлейн-Вотс (Tall Tales Productions, www.tall-tales.com), яка перетворила міні-кулінарію на мистецтво. Вона створює гіперреалістичні продукти в масштабі 1:12 для кіно, телебачення й колекціонерів. Творіння Керолайн — неїстівні. Хоча, спостерігаючи за тим, як майстриня «готує» салат, ніколи не скажеш, що креветки й авокадо завбільшки з кавове зерня виготовлені з полімерної глини. Їх так і хочеться з’їсти!

The buzz started in Japan, with the Miniature Space YouTube channel’s videos of making miniature versions of genuine meals — from sushi to French fries. The Lilliputian meals are totally edible — there’s a video of a poodle eating a freshly made pudding (and then making puppy eyes asking for more). The work demands ultimate attention to details — like trying to make pancakes using a quail egg, a teaspoon of milk, several dozen grams of flour, and a tiny bit of butter. And if this wasn’t difficult enough, remember there’s the doll-size cutlery. Which, by the way, comes at a high price — a 5 cm knife will set you back $99.

This Japanese trend has spread all over the world.

Tiny food videos get hundreds of thousands of views; the most popular video by Miniature Space — cooking a tiny cake that can fit on a coin — has been viewed more than 24 million times. What makes these videos so addictive? According to experts on Japanese culture, their popularity is caused by Japan’s love for all things “kawaii”, or “cute”.

“Or maybe because tiny food has fewer calories?” laughs American miniaturist and sculptor Caroline McFarlane-Watts (Tall Tales Productions, www.tall-tales.com), who turns tiny food into a work of art. Caroline creates hand-sculpted hyperrealistic miniature food items in 1:12 scale for film, TV, display, and collectors. Caroline’s creations are not edible. Though, when watching her “cooking up” a miniature version of a shrimp salad, it’s hard to believe those avocados smaller than coffee beans are made of polymer clay. They look so yummy!

Caroline McFarlane-Watts’ career in creating realistic miniatures (particularly food) spans more than a decade. The artist has worked in the art department for Harry Potter at Leavesden Studios where she helped build a miniature scale model of Hogsmeade village. Caroline also teaches sculpting and maquette fabrication and makes TV appearances as a guest miniaturist.

These days anyone can choose an offer from dozens of companies to determine their ethnicity or susceptibility to certain diseases, get recommendations on nutrition, and even find love

Щоб дізнатися безліч цікавого про свій організм, знадобиться домашній тестовий набір і сума від $100. Для аналізу треба зібрати слину в пробірку, пройтися щіточкою по внутрішній стінці щоки або вичавити із пальця краплину крові. To learn a whole lot of interesting information about your body, you only need a home testing kit and about $100. Today this service is offered by many companies, such as 23andMe, MyHeritage, Ancestry, and others. That is how Oprah Winfrey learned she is of Zulu ancestry, while an accountant from Florida was told he had descended from Genghis Khan.

Who cares that the lab simply could not have DNA samples from the Mongolian warlord? This test can help you find unknown relatives, that is, if they also did the test and uploaded their results to the database. The number of people who had their DNA analyzed with consumer tests doubled during 2017 and now exceeds 12 million.

A DNA test can determine fatherhood with 99,9% probability. Why not 100%? In theory, an alleged father could have a twin brother with an identical set of genes.

If no similar genetic material is found, the result is conclusive: the individuals in question are unrelated. DNA paternity tests can also be used to determine the mother as well, for example in cases when a biological mother hasn’t seen her child for a long time (such as separated at birth) or in the case of surrogacy.

The most modern library space in Ukraine opened six months ago. The collection amounts to 150 thousand books. The five floors of the Center are inclusive, so people with visual impairments can work here. Using the library will cost 15 UAH per day.

Almost 300,000 volumes of scholarly literature are available at the main library of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. This space will suit both the readers who crave silence and those who are brainstorming on a project with a team. Catering to differing needs, the library has three spaces for group work.

Фейнман був не тільки видатним фізиком, але й неординарною особистістю. Він вивчав різні мови, малював портрети, грав на барабанах, обожнював розігрувати рідних і колег. В автобіографічній книжці цей «допитливий дивак» пригадує найцікавіші епізоди свого життя — роботу в Мангетенському проекті із створення атомної бомби, захист теорії поглинання перед Альбертом Ейнштейном, участь в експериментах із сенсорної депривації та безліч інших пригод, на які його штовхала невсипуча цікавість.

Nash Format has recently published the Ukrainian translation of the memoirs of the Nobel-prize winner Richard Feynman.

Feynman was outstanding not only as a physicist but also as a person. He studied multiple languages, painted portraits, played drums, and enjoyed playing tricks on his family members and colleagues. In his autobiography this “curious character” speaks about the most interesting events in his life: working on the Manhattan Project to create the atomic bomb, advocating the absorber theory in the presence of Albert Einstein, participating in experiments on sensory deprivation, and the many other adventures his inexhaustible curiosity led him on.

A classic of popular science literature that introduced the term “meme”, this book was recommended by Margaret Thatcher personally. British evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins managed to explain many aspects of human and animal behavior from the perspective of genetics and evolution, and he did it in a way that is interesting and approachable. How did maternal love and fraternal altruism appear? Why do faithful women like generous men and long courtship? Why can’t there be a society where all couples are faithful to each other? And why do birds cry in groups and bugs swarm like tiny clouds? The “nerds” will be delighted.

ЗАМОК ЛЮБАРТА LUBART CASTLE Спершу дерев’яний, а потім цегляний замок Любарта зробив Луцьк південною столицею Великого литовського князівства. Щоб побачити Луцьк із висоти пташиного лету, слід піднятися вузькими ґвинтовими сходами на В’їзну вежу. У Владичій вежі можна задзвонити у старовинні дзвони, а у Стировій, якщо пощастить, потрапити на весілля чи бенкет у лицарському стилі. У давнину в замку Любарта відбувалися з’їзди європейських монархів, нині ж тут проводять свята, фестивалі й кінопокази.

Lubart Castle, originally made of wood and then rebuilt in brick, made Lutsk the southern capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. To see Lutsk from a bird’s eye view, climb a narrow spiral staircase to the Vyizdna tower. In Vladicha tower, you can ring the old bells, and in Styrova Tower, you may happen upon a wedding or a “knight style” feast. In ancient times, European monarchs would assemble in Lubart castle, which now hosts holiday events, festivals and film shows.

ГОЛОВНА ПОШТА THE MAIN POST OFFICE Місто славиться також своєю модерною архітектурою, одним із взірців якої є приміщення головної пошти, спроектованої у 1930-х роках варшавськими архітекторами. Зала першого поверху освітлюється так званим світловим ліхтарем — сонячні промені потрапляють до приміщення через скляну стелю. Такий же мав колись і будинок із «круглими» стінами на вулиці Лесі Українки. Майданчики квартир розташовані тут на різних рівнях, а в під’їзді збереглися люки із зображенням сажотруса.

The city is also famous for its modern architecture. The main post office is an exemplar, designed by Warsaw architects in the 1930s. The hall of the ground floor is illuminated with a skylight, allowing the sun rays to penetrate the room through the glass ceiling.

The house with “round” walls on Lesia Ukrainka Street once had a similar ceiling fixture. Staircase landings are placed unevenly in the building, and the lobby still has chimney access doors with the image of a chimney sweep on them.

Impressive underground attraction is the vaults under Bridgettine Sisters Monastery that lead to the Styr River. This building has served as a police station, a gymnasium and even a prison.

ТРЬОХКІЛОМЕТРОВИЙ ЖИТЛОВИЙ БУДИНОК THREE-KILOMETER-LONG APARTMENT BUILDING Серед сучасніших цікавинок Луцька — трьохкілометровий житловий будинок у формі бджолиних стільників, який тягнеться уздовж проспектів Соборності й Молоді й має аж 88 під’їздів. Любителям стрит-арту варто побачити Галерею 4/8, що на території рекреаційного комплексу City Park.

Lutsk also has modern sights, such as a three-kilometer-long apartment building in the shape of a honeycomb. It stretches along the Sobornosti and Molodi avenues and has as many as 88 entrances. Street art lovers will enjoy a visit to Gallery 4/8 in the City Park recreational complex.

You can find the local House with Chimeras on the Styr riverbank. For the past 30 years, architect Mykola Golovan has been decorating his house with bizarre gargoyles, mermaids, centaurs, sphinxes, and dragons.

If the owner is in a good mood, he might call you in to exhibit a huge stone relief depicting his family.

The city is not big enough to have bad cafes and restaurants. In the Mediterranean restaurant Patio di Fiori, you will be treated to oysters and lobsters, and in the democratic pizzeria Felicita you can get a delicious wood-fired pizza. All the restaurants in Lutsk do have something in common — the meals are tasty, and the service is warm and friendly.

Нині споруда належить католицькій громаді. А туристів сюди вабить трьохярусне підземелля із похмурими склепами, черепами і власним «привидом».

Saint Peter and Paul’s Cathedral was built by Italian architect Giacomo Briano, and served as part of the defensive wall of the city and is now a branch of the local history museum. Currently, the building belongs to the Catholic community. Tourists, in turn, come here for the three-level dungeon with gloomy crypts, skulls and their own “ghost”.

ШАЦЬКІ ОЗЕРА THE SHATSKY LAKES Охочим насолодитися природою Волині варто вирушити на Шацькі озера, що за дві години їзди на північ від Луцька. Найбільше й найвідоміше з трьох десятків озер — Світязь, із чистою водою й покладами цілющої глини. Щоправда, на його берегах завжди повно туристів. Тож місцеві радять прямувати до менш людних місць — озер Кримно, Кругле чи Красинець.

Nature lovers who want to experience the nature of the Volyn region should go to the Shatsky Lakes, which are two hours north of Lutsk. The largest and most famous of the three dozen lakes is Svityaz, with its clear water and deposits of healing clay it is a popular tourist spot. That is why the locals advise visiting less crowded places like the lakes Krymno, Krugle, or Krasynets.

П

рожити життя, цікавіше за будь-який пригодницький роман? Чом би й ні, якщо дуже хочеться.

Донька сільського священника зі Львівщини, Зося не надто захоплювалася «дівчачими» ділами. Замість цікавитися вишиванням і веденням господарства, вона марила театром, фотографією, кіномистецтвом і подорожами. Але, здавалося, побачити далекі країни на іншому боці земної кулі їй вдасться, хіба що пробивши землю. А як інакше: вона не принцеса, не багатійка. Її родина, облишивши домівку через Першу світову війну, поневіряється містами й містечками. Мрія далеко, а поруч — хвороби, злидні, смерть. Але глибоко в серці Зося знала: саме для неї світять зорі, для неї щоранку сходить сонце. Чого тільки не встигла повчитися Софія: і акторської справи, і вчительської, і бухгалтерської. Відвідувала курси шиття й діловодства. У вісімнадцять років вони разом із братом взялися за щось нове: почали керувати двома кінотеатрами в Тернополі. Справа розвивалася й давала прибуток. На зароблені гроші можна було б облаштувати спокійне та комфортне життя, але не цього хотіла Софія. Натомість вона зібралася та поїхала в Париж. Учитися. Було нелегко. Зося вивчала мистецтво кінодокументалістики, а водночас працювала прибиральницею і навіть намагалася зніматись у кіно. За кілька років таки отримала роботу, якої прагнула: стала кіножурналісткою. І вирушила у свою першу подорож — у Марокко. Далі на неї чекав Китай. Після перших репортажів стало зрозуміло: Софія знайшла своє покликання. Вона діставалася найвіддаленіших, найдикіших закутків світу, спілкувалася з дивовижними людьми, брала участь у шалених авантюрах. Її цікавили не торовані туристичні шляхи та всесвітньовідомі пам’ятки, а справжнє життя в найпотаємніших і часто небезпечних місцях нашого світу. Південно-Східна Азія, Африка, Австралія, Нова Зеландія, Північна Америка. Китайські селяни, аборигени Океанії, танцівниці з острова Балі. Полювання на тигра, бучне весілля в’єтнамського імператора, лікування в шамана після укусу гадюки.

У своїх подорожах Софія знімала відверті кінорепортажі — для європейських глядачів. І писала повні вражень нариси — українською мовою. Її подорожні нотатки виходили друком у галицьких часописах. Молодь із нетерпінням чекала нових і нових оповідей про пригоди Софії Яблонської. Вона часто приїжджала в рідні місця, виступала перед публікою, упродовж 1930-х років видала три книжки: «Чар Марока», «З країни рижу та опію» і «Далекі обрії». У Китаї Софія познайомилася з послом Франції Жаном Уденом, 1933 року вони побралися. Жили на Далекому Сході та в Південній Азії. Друга світова війна застала їх у Китаї, який окупували японці — союзники Німеччини. Після війни Софія вже не могла приїхати в Україну. Вони з чоловіком оселились у Франції. Там Софія прожила решту життя: фотографувала, фільмувала, писала книжки. Вона загинула 1971 року. Так само, як жила: у дорозі та з книжкою. Потрапила в автокатастрофу, везучи у видавництво новий рукопис.

s it possible to live a life more exciting than an adventure novel? Why not, if that’s what you really want?

Sofia, the daughter of a village priest from the Lviv Region, wasn’t really into girly things. Instead of taking an interest in embroidery and household chores, she raved about theatre, photography, filmmaking, and traveling. But it seemed she could only see the far off countries on the other side of the globe if she dug a hole through the center of the Earth. There was no other way — she was not a princess nor a rich girl. The First World War forced her family to leave their home and roam around different cities and towns. Her dream was so distant, and all she saw around herself were diseases, poverty, and death. But deep in her heart Sofia knew — the stars were shining bright for her, just as the sun rose every morning for her.

Sofia eagerly studied anything she could get her hands on — acting, teaching, accounting. She also took lessons in dressmaking and record keeping. When she was 18, Sofia broke new ground — she started managing two cinemas in Ternopil together with her brother. Their business grew, became profitable, and with the money Sofia could secure herself a quiet and comfortable life, but this wasn’t what she wanted. Instead she packed up and went to Paris to study.

It wasn’t easy. While Sofia studied the art of documentary filmmaking, she worked as a cleaner and even tried to launch her acting career. After a few years, she finally got the job of her dreams and became a documentary journalist. She embarked on her first journey — to Morocco. China was her next stop.

After her first reports it became clear that Sofia had found her calling. She reached the farthest and wildest corners of the world, talked to incredible people, and took part in risky endeavors. The beaten tourist paths and world-famous landmarks didn’t spike her interest; Sofia preferred exploring authentic life in some of the world’s most mysterious and often dangerous places: Southeastern Asia, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and North America. She met Chinese farmers, Australian aborigines, and Balinese dancers. She took part in a tiger hunt, attended a sumptuous wedding of the Vietnamese emperor, and was healed by a shaman following a snake bite.

When traveling, Sofia made candid reports for her European audiences and described her experiences in emotional essays in Ukrainian. Her travel records were published in several Galician periodicals. Ukrainian youth eagerly awaited new stories about the adventures of Sofia Yablonska. She often visited her motherland and gave speeches to the public; in the 1930s, she published three books — The Charm of Morocco, From the Land of Rice and Opium, and Distant Horizons.

In China, Sofia met Jean Oudin, the Ambassador of France. They married in 1933 and lived in the Far East and in South Asia. During the Second World War they remained in China, which was occupied by Japan, an ally of Nazi Germany.

After the war Sofia couldn’t return to Ukraine. She settled down with her husband in France. This is where Sofia spent the rest of her life; taking photos, making films, and writing books. She died in 1971 just the way she lived — on the road, with a book. She got into a car crash when carrying a new manuscript to her publisher.

The Latvian airline airBaltic has been ranked No 1 globally in punctuality by OAG analysts. In 2017, 90,1% of airBaltic flights arrived on time.

Last year, airBaltic has transported a total of 3,5 million passengers to its network. The airline has increased the number of Ukrainian passengers by 54.4% compared to 2016. In summer 2018, airBaltic will offer the following new summer destinations: Malaga, Lisbon, Split, Bordeaux, Gdansk, Sochi, Kaliningrad, and Almaty.

За статистикою, щонайменше дві-три речі так і лишаються невикористаними у подорожі. А вони займають місце і важать додаткові 300-600 грамів. Якщо ваша поїздка триватиме 3-5 днів, то ви знаєте орієнтовний план подорожі: збираєтеся багато ходити містом чи вирушити в автобусний тур, взяти участь в урочистій вечері чи діловій зустрічі, відвідати басейн чи аквапарк тощо.

According to statistics, at least two or three things remain unused during a journey and they weigh from 300 to 600 g. If your journey takes 3-5 days, chances are that you know your approximate itinerary: long walks or bus tours around the city, festive dinners or business meetings, visits to a swimming pool or an aqua park, etc.

Travelling without checked baggage, one should meet cabin bag sizes and weight allowances. In economy class, you can take one bag up to 8 kg for a short-haul flight or no more than two bags up to 12 kg for an intercontinental flight. Business class tourists can take on board two carry-on items weighing up to 9 kg each*. Their size should not exceed 23 cm x 40 cm x 50 cm. Trolley cases of this size will suit perfectly. You can put your papers, wallet, cell phone, and a laptop into a separate bag, a toiletry bag, or a backpack measuring 40 cm x 35 cm x 12 cm. Before boarding or during the check-in, you may be asked to show what’s inside your bag. It is better to measure your carry-on baggage at home. If you find out at the airport that the size exceeds the allowances, you will have to pay extra.

Keep in mind that some items are not allowed in carry-on baggage, such as nail scissors and files, liquids exceeding 100 ml in volume (e.g. face creams), hair sprays and other flammable liquids. Forget about them when travelling without checked baggage. Your favorite cosmetics can be put into travel kit plastic bottles.

ивно, що людина може так довго жити», — каже 81-річна Ліда, українка шведського походження, яка доживає віку в будинку для літніх у селі Зміївка на Херсонщині. Ліда — головна героїня однойменного фільму шведської режисерки Анни Еборн, українська прем’єра якого відбулася у березні під час Міжнародного фестивалю документального кіно про права людини Docudays UA у Києві. Напередодні фестивалю ми поспілкувалися з Анною про її стрічку, яка запрошує глядача у зворушливу подорож пластами людської пам’яті

“ t’s strange that one can live for such a long time,” says Lida, a 81-year old Ukrainian woman of Swedish origin living in a retirement home in the village of Zmiivka in the Kherson Region. Lida is the main character of a namesake documentary by Swedish director Anna Eborn. The film premiered for Ukrainian audiences at the Docudays UA International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival in Kyiv this past March. Just before the festival we talked to Anna about her film, which takes the viewers on a poetic journey through a person’s memory

Ліда з’явилася на світ у родині шведських переселенців у селі Зміївка, що постало на місці шведських поселень, заснованих наприкінці XVIII століття. Старенька — одна з кількох останніх носіїв унікального діалекту старошведської мови. Ліді випало стати свідком найпохмуріших подій ХХ століття. На початку Другої світової її родину відправили на примусові роботи спершу до Німеччини, потім — до Польщі. А після закінчення війни депортували до сибірського трудового табору. Минуло дев’ять років, перш ніж Ліда повернулася до Зміївки. Ліда пережила трьох із своїх чотирьох синів. Із рідні лишилися син Арвід, який мешкає в Санкт-Петербургу, та сестра Марія, яка лишилася жити в Сибіру. Їх розділяють тисячі кілометрів, вони не спілкувалися кілька десятиліть. Та, незважаючи ні на що, Ліда сповнена життя. Зрештою, як каже у фільмі одна з її подруг, треба завжди «лишатися веселою й радісною, поки дупою не лежиш у труні». Анна вперше почула про Зміївку, коли працювала асистенткою на зйомках ігрового кіно й мріяла зняти власний документальний фільм. «На статтю про шведське село в Україні я натрапила випадково. І подумала — а що, як поїхати туди? Чи зможу я зрозуміти їхню мову? Мені пощастило знайти в Швеції чоловіка, який народився в Зміївці. Він написав мені кілька імен людей, які ще мали б бути живими».

Lida was born to a Swedish family in Zmiivka, a village of several Swedish settlements from the late 18th century. This elderly lady is one of the few remaining speakers of a unique dialect of Old Swedish. Lida has seen some of the most painful moments of the 20th century. During the Second World War, her family was deported to Germany, then Poland, and after the war — to a Siberian labor camp. Nine years passed before Lida could return to Zmiivka. Lida has outlived three of her four sons. The only relatives left are her son Arvid, who lives in Saint Petersburg, and her sister Maria, who stayed in Siberia. Separated by thousands of kilometers, they haven’t talked to each other for decades. But despite all the hardships, Lida is full of life.

After all, you have to be “always funny and cheerful until the ass lies in the grave” as her friend says in the film.

Anna first heard about Zmiivka when she worked as an assistant in fiction movies and since then, nurtured the idea of making her own documentary. “It was by chance that I came across an article about a Swedish village in Ukraine,” says Anna, “I was curious to go there and see if I could understand the language.

I was lucky enough to find an elderly man in Sweden who had been born in Zmiivka. He wrote down several names of the people who he thought were still alive.”

Озброєна клаптиком паперу, режисерка приїхала до Зміївки. «Пам’ятаю, як ходила по селу, вигукуючи: “Лідо! Маріє!”», — сміється Анна. «Зрештою, я таки знайшла жінку, яка розмовляла старошведською — красивою мовою із купою старомодних висловів». Анна зібрала потенційних героїнь стрічки в будинку для літніх, де мешкали деякі з них. Жінки сиділи рядочком на лавці й говорили без упину. «Ліда стояла окремо від групи. Вона намагалася приєднатися до розмови, однак жіночки весь час її перебивали». Анна хотіла почути Лідину історію, тож весь наступний день провела з нею. «У Ліди було чудове почуття гумору. На відміну від інших жінок, які багато говорили про Бога й молитви, вона здавалася більш приземленою й чимало розповідала про власне життя». Ліда вирізнялася своєю вдачею. «Вона не ходила до церкви, була розлученою, ще й закохалася в сусіда по будинку для літніх». Між

Armed with a scrap of paper, the director came to Zmiivka. “I remember walking around the village and screaming out: “Lida! Maria!” Anna laughs, “Finally I met a woman who spoke Old Swedish — a beautiful language full of old-fashioned expressions.” Anna invited several elderly ladies to a retirement home where some of them lived. The women were sitting on a bench and talking. “Lida was standing aside from the group.

She tried to join the conversation, but the other ladies kept interrupting her.”

Anna wanted to hear Lida’s story, so she spent the next day with her. “She was very funny. Unlike other ladies, who talked a lot about God and prayers, she was more down to earth and talked about her own life.” Lida was quite a rebel. “She didn’t go to church, she was divorced and fell in love with a man who lived in the same retirement home.” Anna and Lida immediately formed a bond, “She was always protecting me and sometimes called me her granddaughter,” recalls the director.

Анною й Лідою одразу ж зав’язалися теплі стосунки: «Вона завжди мене захищала, іноді навіть називала своєю онукою», — пригадує режисерка. Ліда була чудовою оповідачкою. «Розповідаючи про минуле, вона пригадувала дрібні деталі, яка спершу здавалися несуттєвими, але потім виявлялися вкрай важливими». Знявши короткометражний фільм, Анна вирішила створити довшу стрічку, присвячену виключно Ліді. «Ліда ходила й говорила дуже повільно, тож я хотіла підлаштувати повнометражну версію під її ритм». Окрім того, Анна почала складати докупи пазл Лідиного життя. «Я вирішила розшукати її сина Арвіда, який мешкав у Санкт-Петербургу. Вони не бачилися майже 40 років». Згодом Анна побувала в гостях у Лідиної сестри Марії в Сиктивкарі. Вона записала всіх трьох на камеру, об’єднавши їх хай не в реальному житті, то хоча б у фільмі.

“Lida was a great storyteller,” says Anna, “Recalling her past, she would pick up a tiny detail, which seemed irrelevant at first, but then proved to be hugely important.” After making a short film, Anna decided to create a longer version, with Lida as the central character.

“Lida was walking and talking very slowly, so I tried to make a documentary closer to her rhythm.”

Anna also wanted to put together a family puzzle.

“I decided to find Lida’s son Arvid, who lived in Saint Petersburg and whom she hadn’t seen for almost 40 years.” Later, Anna also went to Syktyvkar to visit Lida’s sister Maria. She recorded the three of them, giving them the opportunity to be united on film, if not in real life.

Anna used several cameras to shoot the film. She recorded Lida’s memories on 16mm, mixing them with black and white analogue archive videos and nostalgic landscape stills revealing the plenitude of nature.

У зйомках стрічки задіяні кілька відеокамер. Спогади Ліди, зняті на плівкову камеру, поєднуються із чорно-білими кадрами хроніки та ностальгійними зйомками пейзажів. «Зазвичай я бувала в Україні взимку. І коли вперше приїхала сюди влітку, Зміївка здалася мені найкрасивішим місцем на планеті», — пригадує режисерка. Фільм сповнений емпатії й поваги до Ліди та її спогадів. «Якби ви побачили Ліду десь на зупинці сільського автобуса, то не помітили б у ній нічого особливого. Та все змінюється, коли приділяєш людині досить часу й вислуховуєш її. Довкола нас чимало таких людей». Можливо, нам варто дати їм змогу розповісти свою історію.

“I mostly visited Zmiivka in winter. And when I first came there in summer, I thought it was the most beautiful place on Earth,” recalls the director.

The film is full of empathy and respect for Lida and her memories. “If you saw Lida at a bus stop in the countryside you wouldn’t notice anything special about her. But everything changes when you give a person enough time. There are many hidden Lidas everywhere.” Maybe we should just listen to them.

Why are some cities comfortable for living and others are not? What influences satisfaction in urban life, and how can we measure inhabitants’ love for their cities?Why do people move into big cities, and why do some of them later return to the comfort of smaller towns?

Urbanism, the study of the urban development of cities, can help answer these questions. In Ukraine, urban studies are quite new. Now, increasingly more researchers and activists are looking for ways to change Ukrainian cities for the better. How do they do it? Read in our next issue.
