Your theme is one of the most critical components of your wedding. Whether you’re planning an intimate ceremony and reception in a secluded setting, or a large, formal affair in a grand venue, a theme can help you with decisions about your attire, invitations, flowers, décor, menu – everything, really. So start brainstorming!

BUILDING AN effective Theme TEXT BY CHRIS CHRISTEN PHOTO BY MOLLY & ELLA WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

1. RELECT YOUR STORY For theme inspiration, make a list of people, places, objects, songs, sayings, hobbies, collections – anything that speaks to you as a couple. In our example, a bride’s love of antique lace and glassware became the foundation for a vintage-style wedding. 2. BE CONCISE Hold your theme to one word or a short phrase. And make sure that every selection relates to that theme. Here, the bride built her theme around a palette of ivory, pink and teal. 3. RESEARCH RECIPES You can find food and drink recipes for every era and style. 4. THINK ABOUT SCALE Mix large-scale items with small-scale pieces for visual impact. Create interesting layers by clustering and stacking objects. Stacking also ensures that small items aren’t overlooked. 5. GUEST INTERACTION Pay special attention to place settings, glassware and other objects that guests will handle throughout your event. 6. THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX – OR JAR Look for clever ways to use ordinary items. Metal numerals on Mason jar lids can designate table numbers, for example. 7. PERSONALIZE It’s not just a pretty wedding, it’s your wedding. Use your décor to showcase what is important to you.

J

ust like our real bride and her bridesmaids, these geometric favors and decorative pieces were made by our very own Wedding Essentials team with everyday supplies. Nothing fake going on here! It’s amazing what you can find when you look around your home for inspiration. Card stock? Check. Candle jar? Check. Add a few embellishments from a craft store, and you are on your way to easy, inexpensive and fun containers for wedding favors, sweet treats – even fresh blooms.

Decorative Pieces SUPPLIES Glass candle jar (we used pillar candle and votive candle jars), Craft tape in your wedding colors Self-adhesive rhinestone strips INSTRUCTIONS 1. Put craft tape on the bottom of the jar and about halfway (or all the way) up the sides. 2. Adhere a single strip or multiple rhinestone strips around the jar, masking the craft tape’s uneven coverage if necessary. 3. Turn upside down to use as a stand, or right side up to hold a favor.

15

Geometric Favors SUPPLIES 8½ x 11-inch pieces of card stock in your wedding colors (one sheet per box) Scissors Glue stick INSTRUCTIONS 1. Print out template from weddingessentialsmagazine.com 2. Cut along the dotted lines; fold along the solid lines (inward). 3. Glue box together, saving the top of the box (flap with two folds) for last. 4. Fill the box with a wedding favor, if applicable. 5. Seal the lid with glue.

These work great for favors, or you can put them to work as cupcake toppers or another element of your décor.

THREE cheers FOR ICE CREAM!

A

make-your-own ice cream bar is a great alternative – or addition – to a more traditional wedding dessert such as cake or cupcakes. Think how much fun you could have with colorful toppings such as candy, sprinkles and sauces, and serving bowls in a modern or vintage style. Get this look with crates from local wine shops for accents; thrift store frames and D.I.Y. chalkboards for signage; barrels from a rental shop (W.E. found large and small versions at Heartland Scenic Studio in Omaha), and a salvaged door for a makeshift table. Top it all off with whipped cream and cherries!

REAL WEDDINGS

Daniela & Ryan k

k

05.25.13 Country Pines, Lincoln

A ‘SWEET’ PLAN The couple was celebrating their dating anniversary when Ryan encouraged Daniela to order dessert – but not the chocolate cake (He was worried it would be too moist for his surprise plan). She ordered it anyway, and luckily, the six candles he stuck in it remained lit. Five of them represented the number of years that the couple had been dating, while the sixth candle represented their future – beginning with his proposal. NOTHING BEATS OLD FRIENDS It was pouring rain on the couple’s big day, and they were having an outdoor ceremony and reception with no plan B. “My bridesmaids were doing everything possible to keep me in good spirits and to take my mind off the weather,” Daniela says. “They were reminiscing about old times.” ALL IN THE FAMILY Daniela incorporated her family’s Bosnian traditions into the wedding, including serving platters of cured, dried meat and cheese to guests after dinner. There was also a surprise belly dancing performance by her cousins. “We had no idea that this was going to happen until they came running out onto the dance floor in their costumes,” she says. SPECIAL MOMENT “As we were about to walk down the aisle, my dad and I stood and took everything in. At that moment nothing mattered. All the stress went away, and excitement and happiness set in.”

REAL WEDDINGS

Tommy & Peter k

k

10.12.13 Bayliss Park, Council Bluffs; The couple's residence, Council Bluffs

INTIMATE AND ‘ENCHANTING’ A few guests, including the “two most important people” in the couple’s lives – Peter’s mom and Tommy’s son – attended the candlelit ceremony at Bayliss Park. “Seeing Bayliss Park transformed into such an intimate and enchanting environment just for us was one of the highlights of the whole celebration,” Tommy says. SURPRISE! The reception at the couple’s renovated historic home was a surprise to 37 guests, who thought they were attending a dessert party. Two of the couple’s friends showed up with a newspaper clipping of the application for their marriage license. “They had that look on their face, followed by smirky grins,” Tommy says. QUALITY, NOT QUANTITY The couple had considered a much larger event, but couldn’t justify guests flying in to “not spend any real amount of individual time with us. We convinced them to visit us over the next year or so (instead).” PRIORITIZE THE DETAILS “Figure out what’s most important to you and focus on that. Everything else is secondary,” Tommy suggests. Flowers and photography were high on the couple’s list. “Flowers bring so much to a celebration, and photos capture the memories and hidden moments for years to come.” A ‘SOFT’ REMINDER Rather than individual gifts, the couple purchased a wool rug together, which they stood on in Bayliss Park as they exchanged their vows. The rug, now in their entryway at home, is a daily reminder of their marriage celebration.

Jamie & Doug k

26

SPRING & SUMMER 2014  weddingessentialsmagazine.com

SHE WAS EASY TO SPOT as the only female taxidermist at an auction that they both attended in Missouri. But she had her eye on the taxidermy mannequins that he was selling. Once they started talking, Jamie and Doug realized that “We are the same people,” Doug says. “Growing up, we did the same things.” YOU CAN SAY THAT AGAIN Jamie and Doug went bear hunting on their honeymoon in Ketchikan, Alaska. He bagged a 150-pound bear, while hers weighed 300 pounds. “It was beautiful,” the bride says. FORGET THE FLOWERS Antlers were in the bouquets and the centerpieces. The ring bearer carried the rings on an antler instead of a pillow, and guests clacked you-know-what together to get the couple to kiss. The flower girl threw chicken feathers (the couple has 150 chickens and owns a taxidermy business) out of an antler “basket.” The décor also included taxidermy bears, bison, skunks, bobcats and badgers. DOUBLE-TAKE Jamie entered the ceremony on the couple’s horse, Sargie. Her dad helped her off the horse and walked her down the aisle. “Usually he’s a knucklehead,” the groom says about the horse (not his father-in-law!). “But he was calm. He was made to be a wedding horse.” WHO NEEDS BOTH HANDS, ANYWAY? The day before the wedding, Jamie burned her hand on the handle of a hot skillet. On her honeymoon, she broke a bone and cut an artery in the same hand when she fell on some rocks in a stream and her rifle landed on her hand. “I bandaged it up,” she says. “I didn’t want to ruin the hunting. I went to the ER the next day.” DIG IN! Their wedding cake fit into a handmade, life-sized deer. The couple painstakingly made the 150-pound creation out of 25 pounds of frosting, foil and paper mache, among other materials. There was even a shelf inside the “stomach” to hold the cake. “He’s outside,” the groom says when asked what happened to the deer after the reception. “Our chickens are working on it right now.”

REAL WEDDINGS

Julie & Kyle k

k

08.03.13 St. Patrick's Church, Elkhorn; Tiburon Golf Club, Omaha

CHANCE MEETING Julie and Kyle met at a bar in 2008. They were nervous on their first date because “well, we met at a bar,” Julie says. “However, we completely hit it off and had a great conversation for more than two hours. And that was the beginning of our love story.” SO MUCH BETTER THAN A PHONE CALL Kyle planned a surprise date at a vineyard, where he proposed. But the surprises didn’t stop there. He arranged for his parents and Julie’s parents – who made the seven-hour trip from their home – to help celebrate the moment. LIFE IN PICTURES The tables at the reception were numbered with years beginning with “1987” and ending with “2013” to document Julie’s and Kyle’s lives. Each table displayed pictures of them from a particular year. “It was an amazing way for family and friends to see pictures of us growing up.” THE GUESTS GOT IN ON THE FUN, TOO The photo booth picture strips that guests took of themselves throughout the night became the wedding favors. THE GROOM’S TURN You often hear of brides wearing their grandmother's jewelry, but this time the groom got in on the action. His wedding band was his late-grandfather’s. The heirloom has been worn by three generations of Roeslers.

Jenny & Ryan k

k

08.03.13 St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, Omaha; Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium

IN THE WILD The “adventurous” reception setting, as the bride describes it, featured an aquarium and a wave wall. Zoo animals, including a baby alligator and a bird, and zookeepers “mingled” with the guests. “It was a wonderfully unique experience,” Jenny says, especially for the pint-sized guests. THE OTHER ‘MAN’ IN HER LIFE was an important part of the proposal and wedding day. Baxter, the couple’s beloved dog, greeted Jenny with an engagement ring hanging from a bow tie on his neck the night Ryan proposed, and he wore a tux on the couple’s wedding day. “He is a very special part of us, and we wanted to have him be a part of our day,” Jenny says. SPECIAL SURPRISE The diamond in the necklace that Jenny wore on her wedding day came from her grandmother’s wedding ring. Jenny’s mother had the necklace made as a surprise. SWEET WORDS The priest read letters at the ceremony that the bride and groom wrote to one another. “It was memorable to hear each other’s letters for the first time,” the bride says. “Everyone commented on how it brought tears to their eyes. They really enjoyed them.”

Christy & Mitch k

k

05.11.13 First Central Congregational Church, Omaha; Tip Top Ballroom, Omaha

A SWEET MESSAGE FOR CHRISTY … Mitch filmed a surprise video for the reception. In the video, he talks about how he enjoys life now that Christy is in it, and how much he is looking forward to their future together. AND THE WEDDING GUESTS The couple wrote thank-you cards for each guest and put them at his or her place setting. “It was something we both wanted to do because we appreciate our family and friends so much,” Christy says. LOTS OF FUN, TOO Christy and Mitch wanted to make sure that their guests enjoyed themselves, so they had a photo booth, a cocktail hour, an open bar – and by the groom’s request – a cigar bar at the reception. APPLE OF THEIR EYES – AND FEET One of the wedding colors was what the bride likes to call “apple green” (she didn’t want to think of it as lime green), which was carried through in the groom’s socks and her shoes. DON'T FORGET “To just enjoy the day is a lot easier said than done. But all of the people coming to your wedding are there for you. They are your favorite people, so enjoy it.”

Wedding Etiquette Guide

Planning getting you down? Here’s how to deal with 5 common stressors. BY AMY LaMAR & CHRIS CHRISTEN

W.E. found a few experts to weigh in

FAMILY/FRIEND INVOLVEMENT It can be tough to stay true to what you want when you’re bombarded with ideas and opinions from well-meaning family members and friends. Discuss roles and responsibilities from the get-go; define boundaries and limitations, and cheerfully remind your helpers that you have the final say – and sometimes your answer will have to be “no.” The day is, after all, about you – even if people don’t understand why you are doing things a particular way, Farrage says.

BUDGET BLAINE MUHLE Designer/coordinator Memrical Design Studio

“Financial expectations are huge,” WemhoffStrawn says. Determine who is in charge of the checkbook, and set your budget according to what you can pay for now rather than later. Pinpoint aspects that you especially want to highlight, and skimp in other areas. Discuss costs with both families – and your vendors – before getting too deep into the planning process.

GUEST LIST

SARAH WEMHOFF-STRAWN Professional counselor

"Figuring out who gets an invite and who gets left out can cause a lot of stress and tension," Farrage says. You don’t want to hurt feelings or offend someone by denying him or her an invitation to your special day. Balance your guest list with your budget and the venue’s capacity. Be honest with those who don’t receive an invitation. If they ask, politely respond that you wanted to invite them, but you couldn’t due to budget and space constraints.

RSVPS You will need RSVPs to guide you for everything from the number of programs to place settings to servings of food. In a phone call or email, politely let the guest know the importance of his/her response. Give them a date to reply by, and let them know that you really want them to attend.

MANAGING EXPECTATIONS THERESA FARRAGE Event specialist Scoular Ballroom

SPRING & SUMMER 2014  weddingessentialsmagazine.com

“No day will go perfectly,” Muhle says. Keep calm and carry on. Your guests won’t notice the hiccups. “This is one day where you have permission to be selfish. It’s all about staying true to you and what you want as a couple."

Catering Etiquette

Tasting? Sure.

Comp meal for 10? Not going to happen. Far too many catering inquiries start like this: “Hi, I’d like to come in for a tasting.” "That’s fantastic," says Melissa Tibben from Attitude on Food. But first, she says, the caterer will need some details. Lead the conversation with who you are, why you want a tasting, and when and where your event will be. Once the basics are established and the caterer knows he or she can handle the job, you can discuss the finer details of a tasting. Keep in mind that it’s unreasonable to ask the culinary team to prepare everything on the menu. Want to bring eight to 10 people to the sampling table? That would be a dinner party. Two to four? Perfect.

A morsel of catering etiquette:

Contact us

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Shop for a caterer after you’ve chosen your reception site and are aware of the venue’s rules related to catering. You also should have an idea of your catering needs: A plated meal, family style dining, self-serve buffet, interactive food stations or hors d’oeuvres only. Number of guests also is important to know. Contact the top caterers on your list to check their availability and to confirm their ability to handle your event. If the answer is “yes,” then schedule an initial menu discussion. Don’t expect to go through the tasting drill until after you and the caterer have determined the menu’s direction. And don’t expect the tasting to be free. “Caterers put a lot of work into their tastings,” Tibben says. “We are like a restaurant. We use fresh ingredients and prepare food from scratch.” Consider your food service options carefully. Hors d’oeuvres aren’t your least-expensive option. They are your most expensive option because of the labor required to prepare 12 to 20 small bites per person per hors d’oeuvre.

Your menu should reflect you as a couple. “Showcase your personalities and your love for food,” Tibben suggests.

Some caterers offer group tastings of a wide variety of food on a regular basis. Private tastings are customized. You can expect to pay for both types of tastings. If you book, most caterers will comp the bride and groom’s tasting fee on the final invoice.

ydnie and Chase Luther of Omaha designed their wedding website so guests could have a “sneak peek” at the details leading up to their big day on June 28, 2013. In addition to a photo gallery and a blog about how the couple met, the site also included a map, hotel and parking information and pictures of the ceremony and reception venues. A bonus for out-of-towners: A list of Omaha attractions. “The website was kind of a guide to our city, and included a list of places to visit in their downtime,” Sydnie says. Haylie and Justin Rousek of Omaha also had their guests in mind when they designed their wedding website. Although the couple mailed the RSVPs for their October 18, 2013, wedding, guests could respond on the website as well. The most helpful aspect of their site, however, was the registry. “I believe that it is tacky to put registry information on the invite, so having a link that went straight to our registry was great – especially for my family," Haylie says. They are from a small town, and this enabled them to buy gifts more conveniently. Tact was on both brides’ minds when dealing with other aspects of the wedding as well. Haylie and Justin made sure that all of their close family members and friends knew about Justin’s proposal before announcing it on social media sites. And they only made the link to their website available on the invitation. “I didn’t post the website link to any social media sites because I didn’t want to send information out about the wedding to people we wished we could invite, but didn’t have the space or budget for,” Haylie says. The brides, who are sisters, also used Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to share their wedding details. Sydnie says it was fun to look back at Instagram and see the pictures that she and Chase had tagged throughout their engagement and wedding, while Haylie enjoyed seeing the photos and reading the tweets that friends and relatives posted. These days, Haylie and Justin are using a different hashtag to document another big event in their lives. They are building a house, and the hashtag links to photos of its progress. We can only guess what they will be documenting next.

THE PROPER THANK-YOU

Saying “thanks” with sincerity.

T

exts and emails won’t do. When it comes to thanking your guests for their gifts, a proper acknowledgment starts with pen and paper. If you have bad handwriting, a typed message on a personalized card is the next best thing.

NAMES

If you’re using first names, list the woman’s name first in the note and on the envelope.

LENGTH

Three or four sentences will do.

non-members welcome!

Photo: Multi-Images

First Central Congregational UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST

421 South 36th St. www.firstcentral.org 402.345.1533

BODY

Always reference the gift and how you plan to use it. When acknowledging gifts of cash, checks or gift cards, the amount of the gift should not be mentioned. Add something personal about the gift-giver. End your note by thanking them again, and sign both names.

TIMELINE

Try to mail your thank-you notes within two weeks after your wedding.

W.E. TIPS

NO GIFTS, PLEASE: When two established households are coming together, gifts can seem ridiculous. The best way you can tactfully make the announcement is through family and friends. For guests who still want to give you something, suggest a donation in your name to a favorite non-profit. GET ORGANIZED: Recruit a friend or family member to be the gift organizer. He or she can help you keep a record of what you receive from whom and when. Keeping organized from the beginning will help when you sit down to write your thank-yous.

toast THE ART OF THE

on your

Perfect Day

T

oasts are customary at wedding receptions. But the prospect of wishing the bride and groom well can be nerve-racking if you’ve never raised a glass in someone’s honor. Here’s a cheat sheet to minimize the struggle.

1.

Be prepared. Know what you want to say, and rehearse your toast out loud in front of a mirror.

2. Keep it simple and brief; one to two minutes is ideal. 3. Put your toast on card stock and hide it under your dinner plate until it’s needed. Afterward, present the card to the couple as a memento.

4. To start, stand and gently tap a wine or water glass to get guests’ attention. Speak loudly and clearly. If the room is large and a microphone is available, use it. 5. Open your remarks by telling guests who you are and how you know the couple. 6. Keep it clean. Avoid embarrassing stories, inside jokes and references to exes. 7. End by raising your glass and asking guests to join you in the gesture. Then offer a heartfelt sentiment to close the toast. 8. The bridal couple should remain seated as friends and family raise their glasses. Don’t raise your glass in return, clap or drink. Just smile and nod in acknowledgment, then thank the toast-giver once he or she has finished.

SPRING & SUMMER 2014  weddingessentialsmagazine.com

9. Traditionally, the party host (usually the father of the bride) is the first to toast the newlyweds. Next come toasts by the best man, maid or matron of honor, siblings and the groom’s parents. As the meal is concluding, the bride and groom can offer a toast to their parents and thank their guests for celebrating with them.

Good Libations Find the perfect recipe for a bar that keeps the party going.

T

he key elements of a wedding bar include wine, beer, bubbly and cocktails – plus soda, “mocktails” and other nonalcoholic drinks. As you consider your options, just remember: A cash bar is the ultimate no-no.

1 2 3

Budget

For a formal affair, you may want to offer premium beverages all night long. If you have limited funds, stick with wine and beer and a signature cocktail. You can also limit a full open bar to just the cocktail hour. Some venues let you bring in your own bottles and pay a house corkage fee, which can be economical if you can buy wholesale or get a great deal at a liquor store.

Guests

Consider your crowd. If you and the majority of your guests love wine, serve your favorite red and white. Inviting a lot of college friends? Perhaps beer is fine. Or maybe spirits are a must if your crowd drinks gin martinis.

Drinks & Dollars

Plan for one drink per person per hour of the reception. If you are serving a special sparkling wine for the toast, opt for a budget-friendly Spanish cava or Italian prosecco (one glass per adult). Kegs run about $1 per 12-ounce glass of craft beer, or 63 cents per glass of domestic beer. As for liquor, a 750 ml bottle contains about 17 drinks (a good value, but you need ice, mixers and more bartenders).

LESS IS MORE

Instead of a single, large centerpiece in the center of the tables, cluster small bud vases and bottles of various heights and shapes. Fill each with an amazing large bloom, such as a peony, hydrangea, large gerber daisy or orchid.

Let our Sales Team assist you with all of your Bridal Accommodations: • Kissing Corner Package for Bride & Groom • Complimentary Custom Web Page • Shuttle Services • Function Spaces perfect for Rehearsal Dinners, or intimate Gift Opening Ceremonies.

PLANNING TIP

A Special Occasion before YOUR Special Occasion.

Delay hiring a florist until you’ve selected your venue and date, and make sure you have secured your other main vendors, including the caterer, photographer and entertainment. You’ll have a better sense of what your décor budget is and what type of ambiance you want to create. Six or seven months out should be a safe bet. Expect to spend 8 percent to 10 percent of your total budget on flowers.
