ongratulations, and welcome to Wedding Essentials! We’re excited to help you through the myriad of decisions that come with planning the event of your life.
In this issue (and on our blog, weloveweddings.omaha.com), you’ll
see example after example of couples who poured their hearts into their weddings – and had the time of their lives. We wish the same magical, exhilarating experience for you. The Wedding Essentials family recently shared in the excitement of Creative Director Heidi Thorson’s own wedding. It was filled with sweet D.I.Y. touches – each crafted with heart (Look for them on our blog!). It was a memorable weekend. But for as long as weddings have been planned, things can and do go wrong. Heidi was caught in a downpour just before the reception began. A resourceful bridesmaid and yours truly came to the rescue by restoring our damp bride’s wavy tresses with a blow-dryer, a curling wand and 30 feet of extension cord running from the cocktail bar into the women’s restroom. Fifteen minutes later, Heidi emerged. Bright smile restored, she and Matt made their grand entrance and the evening played on. The next day, Heidi posted on Instagram: “Life isn’t about waiting for the storms to pass. It’s about learning to dance in the rain.” - Vivian Green Wishing you joy and happiness,

GROUP FUN The couple’s destination wedding was a “memorable group experience. Everyone got along wonderfully, and lots of lifelong friendships were formed,” Megan says. IN FACT … Their friends and family made everything “perfect. There was not a single stressful or panicked moment of the day. I think that is what made our day so memorable.” THAT’S A NEW ONE The officiant, who the couple had never met, had Megan repeat “all these things I shouldn’t do, while Jason’s vows were simple,” she says. “It was pretty hilarious.” BEST ADVICE To plan the wedding you want rather than what everyone else wants. WHAT SHE GAVE HIM “A lifetime of happiness!” THE NUMBERS 12 attendants; 42 guests A ‘LUCKY’ PROPOSAL Jason proposed on St. Patrick’s Day in the couple’s home. While they were out for breakfast that morning, Jason’s family members – who own a flower shop – decorated the kitchen with flowers. Megan first saw the flowers – and then she saw Jason bent down on one knee. Meanwhile, their friends and family were waiting to celebrate at a nearby bar.

Mix away with confidence! ST YLING AND TEXT BY HEATHER WINKEL PHOTOGRAPHY BY KRISTA LEIGH HURST
Not sure where to begin when it comes to mixing colors, patterns and textures? Here’s your tutorial. No guesswork required.
MINTY FRESH Pick a fresh color and stick with it. Layer upon layer of mint make for a decadent scene. An intense tablecloth is just the trick if you keep the rest of the setting simple. Try doubling up chargers and plates before topping them off with an adorable box of mints.

GOLDEN RULE The combination of royal blue and gold has elegance written all over it. Bust out gold spray paint to extend the glisten for speckled silverware handles. Or douse ordinary sticks in gold paint before adding them to simple white floral arrangements. Monogrammed tea cups, sparkly striped napkins and gold-rimmed wine glasses act as accents, while strong patterned napkins take the look to sublime. Even Washi tapedecorated vases look expensive when gold is involved.

CORAL AT THE BEACH Nothing says summer like a fresh coral color palette. Toss in stripes and voila! You have a beach party. Table numbers, menus and thank-you tags outlined in a symmetric pattern create interest, while place mats become the table runner. Plus, your guests will be delighted to find raspberries in their water glasses.

03.15.14 The couple's home, Omaha
A SPECIAL DATE Their wedding day marked the one-year anniversary of their first date. AND A SPECIAL LOCATION The couple chose to get married in their home because they wanted something small and personal, and for it to reflect them as a couple. SHE KNEW SHE MADE THE RIGHT DECISION WHEN … She watched Jeremy perform “Sabotage” by the Beastie Boys to kick off the karaoke session for the evening. The couple has been doing karaoke together since their first date. WHAT HE GAVE HER A “Friday gift,” just like he has every Friday since April 2013. On that particular Friday? A gold bracelet with a heart and bird charms. TELL ME THAT ISN’T WATER … Heather felt a water droplet on her head during their wedding dinner at home, but it wasn’t the first time. The couple went on vacation two-and-a-half months before the wedding, and they came home to water pouring out of a pipe on the second floor. The water had also traveled to the kitchen, dining room and basement. Two weeks later, they discovered yet another broken pipe. “By some miracle,” they found a contractor to repair the house in time for the wedding. As for the leak on their wedding day: “It was just one of those things that you had to laugh about,” Heather says.

First on your wedding planning to-do list is to pick a date, which may seem like an easy task. But if you’re getting married in Omaha, there are a few things to consider before locking in your date. Keep this list handy. It’s your cheat sheet of events that could interfere with a 2015 or 2016 wedding.

We Deliver! Every time. From casual to formal, large or small, simple or detailed, our catering options are designed to make your special occasion even more memorable.
BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY SHAREHOLDER'S MEETING This annual pilgrimage is called the “Woodstock of Capitalism” for good reason. More than 30,000 shareholders snap up hotel rooms in and around Omaha the first weekend of May. Any rooms left will cost you and your guests a pretty penny. Skip the dates: May 2, 2015 // April 30, 2016 GRADUATION If you have family members graduating from high school or college, the weekends in late May and early June could be problematic. You don’t want guests having to choose between these major life events. Skip the dates: May 23, 30 and June 6, 2015 // May 21, 28 and June 4, 2016 MEMORIAL AND LABOR DAY WEEKENDS Not only is school just beginning or ending, but many families take vacations over these long weekends. Skip the dates: May 25 & Sept. 7, 2015 // May 30 & Sept. 5, 2016 COLLEGE WORLD SERIES If you want to get hitched in downtown Omaha, the middle of June raises a red flag. Hotels will be booked solid, and traffic could make it difficult for guests to navigate the streets and find parking. Skip the dates: June 13-24, 2015 // June 18-29, 2016

‘LET IT GO’ when things go wrong TEXT BY CHRIS CHRISTEN
Former supermodel Kathy Ireland can’t take her eyes off today's bride. That’s right. She loves how she is taking charge of her day in a thoughtful, meaningful way. These days, Ireland is CEO and chief designer for kathy ireland Worldwide, a licensing empire for products that typically find their way into wedding décor and bridal registries like yours. We caught up with Ireland at a recent social media party at Nebraska Furniture Mart. Between online posts, she talked about marriage and family life with her three kids. She also shared her best tips for wedding day bliss:
Opening August 2014 Beautiful banquet facility with a romantic Italian flair to host your special day with up to 600 family and friends. 132nd & Fort | Omaha, NE | 402-493-8888
• Enjoy every moment. “That’s foremost.” • Learn what kind of wedding you want and be true to yourself to make it happen. • Don’t buy a gown that’s too small. Ireland's own bridesmaid insisted that she was a size 4 when she was a size 6. The dress was so tight that it ripped at the seam as the bridesmaid walked down the aisle. • Accept that things WILL NOT go as planned, and have a sense of humor. To borrow a phrase from the theme song from "Frozen," “let it go” when things go wrong. • Celebrate your loved ones during the ceremony. • Don’t get caught up in the wedding and lose sight of the marriage.

Candace Kalasky of Lovestru.ck Weddings + Events kept her “Beyond the Sea styled shoot (page 62) refined and elegant with a monochromatic palette. “It all started with the dress, Kalasky says. She was swept away by “Dori by Hayley Paige (available at Rhylan Lang), a cropped midriff gown with a mermaid-esque silhouette.
A soft lavender in the wavy, voluptuous skirt found its mate in deep indigo, and Kalasky’s color story was born. From there, subtle tie-ins were introduced. “By using a theme to subtly guide the look and feel of your wedding, you can create a really fun and unique experience for your guests, she says. “But it’s important that you don’t interpret a theme too literally. Here, we breakdown the “Beyond the Sea shoot to illustrate how subtle elements in six key areas can add up to a perfectly executed theme.

LIGHTING Above a candlelit head table with a mirrored top: More candles in glass globes filled with crushed sea glass suspended from the ceiling. The effect mimics the reflective nature of water. ATTIRE In a subtle touch, Lashes & Love applied teal eyeliner to the model bride’s lower lids to complement her coral lip gloss. REAL WEDDING
Aleah + Tyler k k
05.04.14 Bella Terre, Glenwood, Iowa
‘SPRING’ IN THEIR STEP Aleah chose coral, pale yellow, blush, mint, turquoise and a neutral stone color for her bridesmaids’ dresses, and her bouquet tied all of the colors together. PATHWAY TO A PROPOSAL Tyler teamed up with a couple of Aleah’s friends to transform an area of their church into a romantic outdoorsy scene. It smelled like pine trees and fresh-baked cookies and music filled the air. A pathway was lined with leaves and candles, and it guided Aleah to seven stations that each signified a distinct stage in their relationship. Tyler met her at the last station and proposed. SWEET WORDS The bride and groom didn’t want to see each other before the wedding, so they passed letters back and forth while separated by a door. “It was a sweet way to communicate our love to one another before the ceremony began,” Aleah says. FUNNY MOMENTS Less than two days before the wedding, Tyler found out that one of his out-of-town groomsmen had purchased the wrong suit! And Aleah’s veil flew straight up into the air just as she started to walk down the aisle.

Keirstyn + Collin k k
05.26.14 Suckau Chapel, Grace University, Omaha; Omar Building, Omaha
NOT YOUR TYPICAL MONDAY MORNING The Memorial Day wedding worked well for the couple’s out-of-town guests, and Keirstyn loved that it made it “definitely different from your average wedding.” BREAKFAST, ANYONE? A waffle bar, skewered bacon, quiche, scones, doughnuts and hash browns were served at the 10:30 a.m. reception. ENCHANTED FOREST Keirstyn wanted the wedding to feel like an “ethereal forest.” AND SPORTS … Collin’s only request was a Green Bay Packers groom’s cake. The theme was carried through to his wedding gift: a monogrammed Green Bay Packers beer glass. He gave her a monogrammed baseball cap. “He would be happy if I wore a baseball cap every day of my life,” she says. BEST ADVICE To let each other have bad days. “It has helped us to be able to be human, but keep on top of the important things.” SWEETEST MOMENT The maid of honor’s and best man’s toasts at the reception. “They were so heartfelt and genuine,” Keirstyn says.

We know you’re busy flipping through bridal magazines and blogs for inspiration. It’s fun planning your wedding when you can envision yourself walking down the aisle. You can taste the champagne-flavored wedding cake with vanilla buttercream frosting. You can even picture your first dance, which you have been rehearsing for months. But before you daydream another day, answer one question: How’s everything fitting into your budget? Your venue search can’t begin without knowing your budget, guest count and date.
10 T H I N G S TO CO N S I D E R
Before You Book TEXT BY THERESA FARRAGE WITH AMY LaMAR
10. CEREMONY SITE
5. POLICIES
The latest trend is to hold the ceremony and reception at one site. If this is what you intend, make sure your venue of choice can indeed accommodate you (there may be an extra fee). Some venues may offer two separate rooms, while others have only one space. Don't forget to ask if there is a separate room for getting ready before the ceremony, too.
Make sure you read and understand the venue’s policies before you sign on the dotted line. You don't want any surprises.
9. AMENITIES What’s included in your rental? Do you have access to tables and chairs, a dance floor, a cordless microphone, a projection screen, a piano? For non-negotiable items, ask if the venue can secure them and if there will be an additional charge.
8. EVENT ASSISTANCE Some venues charge a fee for a representative to be onsite for your event, while others include it in the package.
7. VENDORS If your dream is to have a confetti drop, verify that the venue can do it – or even allows it. Everything needs approval before you can finalize your plan.
6. CATERING AND BEVERAGE PROVIDERS Many venues will not let you bring in your own food and beverages. You’ll typically work with either an exclusive caterer or from a list of preferred caterers and beverage providers.
80
FALL & WINTER 2014 weddingessentialsmagazine.com
4. LOGISTICS Coordinate access to the room, as well as set-up and tear-down timelines and procedures. Make sure the other vendors you are using are aware of your timeline so they know they'll have access when needed.
3. RENTAL RATES AND AVAILABILITY Make sure you can afford a venue, and then check for availability before scheduling a tour. With all things considered, time isn't something you'll want to waste.
2. THEME Consider your overall theme when searching for a venue. Think in terms of aesthetics, lighting, décor, etc. Strive for a cohesive look and feel. Find theme tips on page 68.
1. CAPACITY The number one factor in your venue choice is capacity. Before you search for venues, determine how many people you plan to invite and then add 50. This will give you enough cushion in case people ask to bring guests or children to the reception. It’s better to plan for more than to hope that only 75 percent of your guest list shows up.

FELICIA & TYLER LILLY
Wedding date: April 6, 2013 Q: Finish this sentence: I never knew that my spouse … She said: “loves the band Air Supply.” He said: “could take so long to get ready for bed.” Q: What isn’t nearly as important now as it was when you were in the midst of your wedding planning? She said: “Being married to Tyler means more to me than a beautiful wedding day ever could.” He said: He was excited to choose the food for the reception, but then wasn’t hungry due to the excitement of the day. Q: What has been the biggest adjustment in your married life?

They said: “Getting used to living together, and doing everyday household chores, grocery shopping and deciding who sleeps on what side of the bed.” Q: How is marriage different or better than you imagined? They said: “We really enjoy the simple moments, like when we make breakfast together on a Saturday morning.” Q: Your best advice for couples who will be walking down the aisle soon: She said: “The wedding is just the beginning of an amazing life with the person you love.” He said: “Take a breather” together on your wedding day – even if it’s just for 15 minutes. When you look back, you will see how the whole day just flew by.”

LINDSAY & TIM GATEWOOD
Wedding date: May 18, 2013
Q: Finish this sentence: I never knew that my spouse … She said: “was so selfless. He is always willing to lend a helping hand to his friends and family. And … that he doesn’t like the smell of cinnamon candles, which I love.” He said: “was so dedicated and motivated to pursue her goals. Her perseverance is a trait I admire. And … that she can be a bit unorganized.” Q: What isn’t nearly as important now as it was when you were in the midst of your wedding planning? Lindsay and Tim were nervous about their first dance. She said: “I look back now and think it was silly to have been so worried about it.” He said: The details like the decorations seemed so important at the time, but today he remembers everyone’s smiling faces so much more vividly. Q: What has been the biggest adjustment in your married life? They said: The amount of time required to spend on planning for finances; house projects; vehicle purchases; career decisions; education decisions; when they want to have kids, etc. Q: How is marriage different or better than you imagined? They said: They can accomplish more together than they could apart, such as buying their first house together. And the amount of support that they give each other makes daunting tasks and goals seem “possible and attainable.” Q: What is your advice for couples who will be walking down the aisle soon?

JENNY & RYAN STRAWHECKER
Wedding date: Aug. 3, 2013
Q: Finish this sentence: I never knew that my spouse … She said: “loves my dog, Baxter, as much as he does. He’s our dog now.” Q: What isn’t nearly as important now as it was when you were in the midst of your wedding planning? She said: The reception timeline. There were technical difficulties with the slide show, and she agonized over the DJ’s play list. She thought people would get mad, but no one complained or even noticed. He said: “We worried a lot about the guests and what people would do at certain times. But we had enough activities going on that people did what they wanted.” Q: What have been the biggest adjustments in your married life? They said: Sharing a closet and finances. Q: How is marriage different or better than you imagined? They said: “Marriage is better than we imagined because we are always there for each other no matter what. We are our own little family, and we are excited to add a new baby boy to it.” (The baby is due a day before their first anniversary!) Q: What is your advice for couples who will be walking down the aisle soon? She said: “Everyone will want to share their opinion of what you should do, but do what makes you happy.” He said: Keep it simple. “Go with the ideas that are easiest to execute. Let other family members plan activities as much as possible.”

REAL WEDDING
Annalisa + Ed k k
05.04.14 Midtown Crossing, Omaha
JUST LOOK UP Their urban condo’s rooftop was chosen for the couple’s nuptials because of its beautiful view and their fond memories of date nights enjoyed there. THE COUPLE’S STORY was told at the reception through pictures posted chronologically around the room. “Forever starts today” was printed on the invitation, indicating that the pictures were just the beginning of the couple’s story. IT ‘WORKED OUT!’ Annalisa and Ed met at the gym, and it was love at first sight. They had a 16-hour first date, and “couldn’t imagine life any other way,” Annalisa says. THROUGH THE CAMERA LENS Ed got down on one knee on the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge as Annalisa was taking a picture of their feet on the Nebraska/Iowa line. They took a picture in the same spot on their wedding day. GROOM’S ONE REQUEST Ed insisted on wearing his “famous” and comfy red running shoes for the reception. “Everyone loved them,” Annalisa says. BEST ADVICE GIVEN To look at each other during the ceremony, and to stay in the moment. Don’t get caught up in what’s next or what needs to be done.

HERE COMES THE SUN Consider timing your outdoor wedding for sunset when your guests will watch you say your vows in the warm glow of the sun. If you’re having a daytime outdoor wedding, orient the ceremony so that the sun stays at your guests’ backs, not in their eyes.
