Destination Weddings Look to your dreams, but realize the trip isn’t a do-it-yourself proposition. TEXT AMY LaMAR PHOTOGRAPHY IN HIS IMAGE FILM + PHOTO

onsidering a destination wedding? Make it everything you want it to be – and more – by catering to your interests. “You want to express yourself in your destination,” advises Elise Aust, manager and destination wedding specialist at Custom Cruises & Travel. So where are you in your dreams? Are you lying on a beach soaking up the sun with a piña colada in hand? Are you speeding and bumping along in an ATV across rugged terrain? Or are you dancing the night away in a trendy nightclub? Once you have the type of destination decided, consider your guests’ budget and time limits, suggests Kem Matthews, owner of Enchanted Honeymoons Travel. “It’s easy for guests to say they’re going when the idea first

32

SPRING & SUMMER 2015   weddingessentialsmagazine.com

comes up, but factors such as jobs and budget can get in the way.” All-inclusive resorts are especially budgetfriendly because they can be tailored to almost any price point. In fact, nine times out of 10, all-inclusive resorts are chosen over any other location for this type of wedding, Aust says. Many customized packages are available for $3,500 to $5,000, and include everything from the reception dinner to the cake, flowers and photographer. But this isn’t a do-it-yourself endeavor, says Nicole Gessler, owner of Wanderlust Travel Co. For a recent destination wedding in Venezuela, for example, she had to book 42 overnight flights from multiple locations. Travel agents and on-site coordinators are the experts, Matthews says. “They have it down to an art.”

W H AT TO CO N S I D E R BEFORE YOU BOOK YOUR GUEST LIST The average ranges from 20 to 50.

Your Journey Starts Here.

YOUR BUDGET All-inclusive packages can be tailored to almost any price point.

TIMELINE Make sure you are able to give your guests time to save money or make payments for the trip. “Booking at the last minute can be a struggle,” says Elise Aust of Custom Cruises & Travel.

THE LOCATION While all-inclusive resorts in Mexico and Costa Rica, for example, are typically the most budgetfriendly, there are also options in the United States and Europe.

LEGAL OPTIONS Consider whether you want a legal or a symbolic wedding. About 80 percent of destination weddings are symbolic, says Kem Matthews of Enchanted Honeymoons Travel. In that case, a judge back home often handles the legal ceremony.

LANGUAGE BARRIERS Consider whether you’re comfortable dealing with a possible language barrier.

TOP 3 REASONS TO HAVE A DESTINATION WEDDING 1. IT’S ECONOMICAL Local weddings cost 40 percent more than destination weddings, says Wanderlust Travel’s Nicole Gessler. 2. IT'S EASY It’s painless with the help of a travel agent and on-site coordinators. Seventyfive percent of couples who have had a destination wedding say that it was much easier and less stressful than planning a traditional wedding would have been, Gessler says. 3. IT LASTS LONGER You can share your wedding with your guests over a long period of time and create “awesome memories,” she adds.

Let us help you plan all the details for this special time of your life. We’ll take care of everything ensuring you have nothing to think about except each other. So unwind and start making memories that will last a lifetime at Secrets Resorts & Spas.

'OVER' LUNCH John first spotted Lindsey from across the room in a cafeteria at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. AN ICY PROPOSAL … John surprised Lindsey with a weekend trip to New York City. They went ice skating at Rockefeller Center and then everyone cleared the ice, “You & Me” by the Dave Matthews Band came over the PA system. Then John got down on one knee. The couple performed a choreographed dance to the song at their reception. AND A ROCKEFELLER-THEMED WEDDING Touches of gold were in the wedding party’s accessories, glitter aisle runner, chairs, cake and flatware in a nod to the famous gold statue at Rockefeller Center. There were also New York City-themed signature drinks, a custom white dance floor and an ice luge for cocktails at the reception. WITH A LITTLE BIT OF NEBRASKA, TOO! John had a Huskers-themed cookie for his groom’s cake. For a late-night snack, Valentino’s pizza slices were served in Huskers game day boxes.

Fresh Takes

Fruits, vegetables and foliage star in these tabletop accents. SWEET Place small round cakes at individual tables and let guests serve themselves when it’s time for dessert. Keep the icing simple (to save a little money), but top each cake with a large, texture-rich fresh bloom for drama. Elevate each cake on a vintage cake stand surrounded by candles in glass votives. The golden wash of candlelight will make even the dullest room look stunning after dark. CRAFTY Create a cluster of blooms that gives the illusion of one gigantic flower. Apply metallic spray paint to identically shaped bottles, jars or vases. Next, place a single camellia, sunflower, hydrangea or other oversized bloom in each vase. Group the containers in odd numbers as a single unit on your table. BOUNTIFUL Arrange ornamental kale, green and purple artichokes, Brussels sprouts – even heirloom carrots – together in shallow containers. For added structure and texture, mix in ranunculuse, wheatgrass, Brazilian berries, viburnum, boxwood, seed pods and thistle.

38

FRUITY Fill large bowls with lemons, limes or oranges – symbols of abundance and fertility – for a centerpiece that’s as bright as summer itself. For a tropical wedding, use pineapples and coconuts. Include signage that invites your guests to take a piece of fruit home for a post-wedding snack.

SPRING & SUMMER 2015   weddingessentialsmagazine.com

GREEN Arrange foliage as you would with flowers. For a lush display, fill a trumpet vase or an urn with a fountain of ferns, eucalyptus stems, hosta leaves, elephant palms or other tropical foliage. For shorter displays, arrange large-leaf greenery in shallow containers for a big look with minimal investment. For best results, build the arrangements the day of the event and harvest the leaves just before arranging. ORGANIC Place herbs or succulents in a large pot in the center of the table. Surround it with smaller pots of herbs that can double as favors for your guests. Oregano, basil and tarragon not only will give your reception an organic feel, but bring a pleasing aroma to the table. And possibly serve as a conversation starter among guests who enjoy cooking with herbs. CLASSY For each table, decorate two 6-inch pillar candles with green beans and asparagus stalks. For the third element in your grouping, create a candleholder from an artichoke. Using rubber bands, simply anchor vegetables to the perimeters of candles (conceal the rubber bands with satin ribbon). For the candleholder, cut off the top and a bit of the center of an artichoke and set the candle in the depression. Arrange the elements in groups of three on a platter with white flowers.

FROM ANGER TO AMAZEMENT Dave asked Laura to walk across the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge to look at Christmas lights. As they were walking, he stumbled and jokingly tossed something over the bridge to make Laura think it was her ring. It made her mad, and the ride home was silent. Then Laura stormed into her house to find that more than 250 candles had been lit (with her mom’s help). She turned around and Dave was on one knee. TOUGH GIRLS There was an allfemale arm wrestling tournament at the reception. THE PERFECT LOCATION The atmosphere was a huge plus, but the large deck won them over, Laura says. “One of our favorite things to do is sit on a deck around a bonfire with friends, so why not have the same feeling at our wedding?” AN UNFORGETTABLE MOMENT … Dave inconspicuously reached into his pocket to turn off his cell phone – at the altar. AND UNFORGETTABLE FOOD The couple served their favorite foods and desserts at the reception, including cheeseburgers, pulled pork, mac and cheese, sweet potato fries and a breakfast-themed dessert bar. Pop-Tart, anyone? BEST ADVICE “It’s a party, not a performance.”

BUDGET BASICS

Tips for making the most of your money.

“Don’t Throw Your Flowers Away! Preserve them as a keepsake that you will cherish for a lifetime. for home or business

How much does a wedding cost? The latest surveys put the average spend between $25,000 and $26,000. But in the Midwest, where families and circles of friends tend to be larger, it’s not uncommon to see $40,000 weddings. “And that’s not for anything over the top, says Candace Kalasky of Lovestru.ck Weddings + Events in Omaha. Did you just gasp? Relax. That's a ballpark figure, not a target. You don’t need a hefty sum. You just need a good plan for allocating the dollars at hand. Establishing a budget early on, and sticking to it, will keep you on solid footing – and out of debt. To establish your magic number, look at your designated savings and contributions from parents or other relatives. Determine what percentage of your regular income you can devote to the wedding without sabotaging your household budget. Then plug it into our budget formula to see how much you have to spend on each aspect of your wedding. The following estimates are just to get you started; you’ll need to adjust as necessary to fit your wedding’s needs.

‘MUST LIST’

5 splurges well worth the money. TEXT CHRIS CHRISTEN

I

f you're even the slightest bit creative, we highly recommend adding a few D.I.Y. touches to your wedding. In addition to being a great way to customize your day, they typically can save you a little money. Where else can you save? Your guest list is the easiest place to start. As you browse the names (for the 100th time), try this trick: Cross off anyone you don’t know well enough to hug when they come through the receiving line. You’ll be surprised by how much that exercise will impact your bottom line. Now, before you do any more trimming, here are five areas in which a splurge is recommended – and socially appropriate. PHOTOGRAPHY At the end of the day, photographs are all you will have left to look back on from your wedding. You will never regret your investment in professional photographs.

THE PERFECT MARRIAGE OF SAVORY AND SEXY Reserve our private dining spaces for rehearsal dinners, bridal showers, bachelorette parties and more.

FOOD Even if you have a tight budget, you can still select a menu that tastes great and satisfies. If your guests leave hungry, that is all they will remember about your wedding. GRATIS ALCOHOL A cash bar is never acceptable. You as the host need to pick up the tab. To pinch pennies: Limit the hours; narrow the choices; and/or only offer beer and wine and a signature cocktail. BRIDAL BOUTIQUE SERVICE Buying a wedding dress over the Internet might sound like a great way to save a few dollars. However, dress sizing can be tricky, and alterations can be impossible or extremely expensive. A bridal boutique can help you find a dress within your budget, ensure a perfect fit and help you with any problems that may arise. Even better, most boutiques will celebrate with you when you say yes to the dress! BAND OR DJ Entertainment can make for a great, best-nightof-your-life party. Hire a band or DJ with a reputation for getting people up and dancing and enjoying themselves. Aim to end the night with a packed dance floor and guests chanting, “One more song! One more song!”

ADVICE | PLANNING

LEADING THE WAY A trusted partner may be the best money you’ll spend. TEXT CHRIS CHRISTEN

A

wedding planner’s role is defined by you. Kathryn “Katie” DeFurio and Justin Beller initially sought a wedding planner so they could keep her parents in the loop across the miles. “I was living in Omaha and my parents were in Wisconsin,” the bride explains. “I thought, ‘How am I going to make all of this connect smoothly with my parents living 500 miles away?’” Candace Kalasky with Lovestru.ck Weddings + Events provided the muchneeded link. And a whole lot more. “She saved us countless hours and unneeded stress,” the bride says. But there was also an unexpected bonus for the couple, who celebrated their nuptials in May 2014 at the Holland Performing Arts Center in Omaha. Kalasky guided the couple toward a far more personalized celebration than they could have realized on their own. “So many small details can get overlooked, and it’s these details that make a wedding so unique and specific to a couple,” the bride says. “Our wedding planner pushed our creativity. She made us dig deep. We enjoyed how the details became tailored to the everyday ‘us.’ ”

Katie and Justin also looked to their planner for recommendations on photography, floral design, entertainment and dessert. And they relied on her to tweak their plan whenever expenses threatened their means. A few D.I.Y. projects further helped the budget and also personalized the day. Together, the couple hand-painted 245 hobnail jars, heirloom votives and vases for the reception tables. The groom, an artist, hand-painted a canvas ceremony runner, and the bride designed the couple’s invitations, programs, place cards and tabletop signage.

YOU MAY NEED TO HIRE A WEDDING CONSULTANT

KABLOOM STUDIOS

SPRING & SUMMER 2015   weddingessentialsmagazine.com

When it comes to the scope of a wedding planner’s work, “It just comes down to time and the support system available to the couple.” YOU MIGHT HIRE A PROFESSIONAL TO: • Plan the entire event from start to finish • Handle a few specific elements • Provide only day-of-event coordination and oversight

A typical wedding, Kalasky says, can easily involve more than 150 planning hours on her end.

6 SIGNS

46

“For a lot of brides, this is the biggest event that they have ever planned. It can be overwhelming,” says Lovestru.ck’s Candace Kalasky. “A trusted partner can guide you through the process.”

• You’re short on time. • You’re planning a longdistance event. • You don’t want to start from scratch. • You will likely need a mediator to get the wedding you want. • You’re not a control freak; someone else can handle the details. • You’re challenged when it comes to executing your vision.

“If you can afford late nights and time off work to handle arrangements, go for it,” she advises. “But if you have a schedule that isn’t necessarily your own and no support system, a professional planner can be a godsend.” In addition to narrowing your choices and sharing information on a need-to-know basis, a wedding consultant also might mediate and/or troubleshoot on your behalf. And he or she will ask vendor-specific questions you might not know to ask. “If you’re getting married in a non-traditional venue that doesn’t have a site coordinator, it’s imperative to consider an event planner,” Kalasky says. “You definitely will need a point person for that venue.”

SENTIMENTAL SITE The Joslyn Art Museum was chosen as the wedding and reception site because Margaret grew up visiting the museum every Saturday with her favorite art teacher. UNFORGETTABLE ANNIVERSARY DATE The couple got married on July 5. “This way, we will always have fireworks on our anniversary,” the bride says. ALL IN THE FAMILY The bride’s and groom’s siblings were their attendants, while the groom’s father officiated. MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT The couple’s last dance for the evening to “We Are Young.” Adam picked Margaret up and twirled her around, and as the song’s lyrics say, “... carry me home tonight.” JUICE, ANYONE? Adam’s 4-year-old nephew, Owen, was called up by the best man (his dad) to toast and congratulate the couple. IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS Margaret’s “something blue” was her sister’s ombre hair, dyed for the wedding. The cake toppers were miniature replicas of the armchairs in “Up” – one of the couple’s favorite movies. FAMILY HEIRLOOMS Margaret’s wedding band once belonged to her great-grandmother, Margaret, while Adam’s ring was his grandfather, Elvin’s. GROOM’S ONE REQUEST That Kentucky bourbon be served at the reception rather than Tennessee whiskey. Adam’s family is from Kentucky.

t may be difficult to visualize beautiful place settings when your reality consists of takeout on paper plates right now, but Adrienne Fay, director of marketing and advertising at Borsheims, suggests looking toward the future when registering for tableware. “We hear time and time again that couples are thankful that they registered for tabletop accessories as they approach their five- and seven-year anniversaries,” she says. “They are established at that time and they may have children. And they have started to create their own traditions.” So think of your registry as an opportunity to ask for what you really want. “If you love it, then you will use it,” she says. TRENDS YOU MIGHT LIKE:

1. Customization: Brides are creating unique place settings that reflect their personal aesthetic by mixing patterns from different companies. 2. Practicality: “They want to get a lot of use out of it,” says Garry Fowler, president of Celebrity China and Cookware. 3. Transitional: Some patterns such as Juliska’s Berry & Thread and Match’s Convivio can be used every day, but they can also be “dressed up” with accessories for more formal gatherings, Fay says. 4. Pattern play: China patterns with polka dots and whimsical designs are popular, while classic gold- and platinum-band patterns “never go out of style,” Fowler says.

While you may wish to ask guests to refrain from taking photos during your ceremony, the reception is a different story. Social media posts will add a fun dimension to an already memorable day. Create a hashtag and make signage that encourages guests to post images related to your wedding. Here are the benefits. It connects your guests. When you have a room full of people from different parts of your life, social media can help connect them more easily. It allows you to crowd-source photos and see the reception through your guests’ eyes. It means free pictures! IFTTT.com allows you to search Instagram for your wedding hashtag, and it automatically downloads the pictures as your day is playing out. At chatbooks.com, you can print your Instagram photos in keepsake volumes for $6 each!

CALIFORNIA DREAMIN’ Danielle and Talan live in Los Angeles, but they wanted to get married in Omaha because Danielle’s family lives here. AU NATUREL The bride chose a neutral palette over traditional wedding colors. WE’LL DRINK TO THAT! The couple met on Danielle’s 21st birthday at a Los Angeles bar. SPARKS WERE FLYING Talan proposed to Danielle during her family’s annual Fourth of July party. The bride’s extended family members were all behind the big surprise. MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT Danielle’s grandfather, who served in the U.S. Air Force for 25 years, performed the marriage ceremony. He surprised the couple by showing up in full uniform. “It was incredible,” the bride says. OOPS! The best man accidentally used profanity in his speech. GROOM’S SOLE REQUEST That he and his groomsmen wear black suits and white shirts. “That was what I wanted anyway,” the bride says. For fun, the groomsmen wore corn-themed socks since most of them traveled from California. BEST ADVICE Always make time for each other.

WORLD TRAVELERS The couple met at a mutual friend’s wedding in Sydney, Australia. They’re both graduates of Columbia University Business School in Manhattan, and they currently live in New York City. WHY OMAHA? The bride grew up in Omaha, and the groom’s father attended graduate school at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. It was the first American city that he lived in after leaving India. TAKE TWO The couple had a Hindu ceremony and a Catholic ceremony. The Catholic priest did a “beautiful job of finding common ground in our cultures and sharing examples of our love for one another,” the groom says. WAIT FOR ME! The bus driver forgot to take Sanj to the Hindu Temple, so he hitched a ride with friends. IT ‘LIGHTENED’ THE MOOD The couple had to dig out the wick with a key in order to light the unity candle. GROOM’S ONE REQUEST To not have a big wedding. He laughs when he says that they did anyway.

& Gorgeous Previously, a couple’s stationery represented about 4 percent of the total wedding budget, Wiese says. Today, 7 to 10 percent is more typical for couples wanting highly customized pieces. Here, Wiese and studio partner Jessica Luna share to-die-for trends in the luxury bridal stationery market.

ar from the land of commercial stationery books comes custom stationery so gorgeous it will steal your heart – at any price. “We’ve seen some changes in what couples are spending,” says Kaleigh Wiese, custom stationery designer and founder of Méldeen, which has locations in Omaha and Austin.

SAGE ADVICE Take postage into account when you’re figuring your stationery budget. Custom sizes and materials can run up the postage meter.

CALLIGRAPHY The styles offered by calligraphers are endless, which means you’ll have no trouble finding a good match for your wedding aesthetic.

LASER-CUT DESIGNS Frequently used to give dimension and an exquisite twist to a simplistic suite. Custom laser designs can be over-thetop – or a small moment that makes you stop and say, “Wow, what is that?”

FOIL Equally at home in traditional or modern suites. Available in a vast selection of colors and tones. And not every foil has a mirror effect.

CUSTOM EDGING Edge painting is a great way to add a touch of color while keeping the overall aesthetic clean and classic. Foil metallics look especially rich. Pattern edging is another striking treatment, especially when it relates to an element of your wedding.

GLASSINE An old vellum trend made new by printing directly on transparent paper. Glassine can be used for the envelope or the invite itself.

LEATHER Whether as a wrap, envelope or invite – leather isn’t much heavier than a three-ply paper suite. Go the extra mile with a blind emboss or foil.

SPECIAL HONOR The couple honored their late grandparents with a bouquet and a display of their original wedding photos. And the bride’s mom turned one of their old suitcases into a card box. avy, cobalt and steel blue are riding a wave of popularity in menswear. The trend is perfect for the groom who isn't keen on black or wants something a little different but still classic in a tuxedo (or even a suit). W.E. love the look of a navy one-button jacket with a peak lapel or shawl collar, white shirt and black bow tie. It's Old Hollywood with a modern twist. Best of all, navy will stand the test of time in your wedding photos. SHOPPING FOR THE RIGHT FIT • A jacket that hangs big and loose from the shoulders might feel comfortable, but trust us, it’s not a handsome silhouette for formalwear. Go for a fitted look. • Don’t judge your trouser length by looking down at your feet. Stand tall in front of a mirror. Your trousers should have a slight break on top of your shoes. Summon a tailor if your socks are showing, or your pants are dragging on the ground or bunching up on top of your shoes. • Reject any suggestion of cuffing your trousers. Tuxedo pants are not made for cuffs. • Wear cuff links with your tuxedo shirt. • Weigh the merits of a wing-tip collar versus a lay-down collar. A bow tie looks swell with both, but the wing tip is more formal. • Expect a snug fit at the neck. A loose collar looks sloppy, and will make the tie appear farther away from your face than it should. • See that breast pocket? It’s made for a pocket square. A jacket looks empty without one. • A black tux or suit requires black shoes. If you're wearing navy, medium brown dress shoes - for all the men in your bridal party - will look dashing. If you’re a plus-sized bride, have no fear: There will be gowns for you to try on. Bridal consultants at Ellynne Bridal in Lincoln offer this advice: HAVE AN OPEN MIND Try on different styles, and don’t fret when sample sizes don’t fit you perfectly. Even a dress in your size most likely will require alterations.

402.348.9424

wanderlusttravelco.com

TRUST YOUR CONSULTANT Even if a size doesn’t make sense, your consultant still can predict whether a style will flatter your body type. DON’T GET CAUGHT UP ON A SIZE “Too many girls walk into the shop, look at the standard sample sizes (8-10) and leave,” says consultant Nichole Luccino Shandera. Sizes vary widely by designer and dress style. Don’t dismiss a dress just because you don’t like the number on the tag. Ask your consultant for an unbiased opinion and then make your decision. BE CONFIDENT If a salesperson is rude about your size, take your business elsewhere. You deserve a salesperson who wants to help you look your best. In the same regard, be kind to yourself and your body image. ENJOY YOURSELF Shop with a positive attitude. The dress of your dreams is out there. Have fun during the search!

'LADY IN BLUE' Erin and Gerry met at a “Dancing With the Omaha Stars” benefit for Sunshine Kids. Gerry’s son, Patrick, who was 3 at the time, referred to Erin as the “lady in blue” because she appeared on the event poster in a blue dress. With help from Patrick’s brother, Joe, who was 4 at the time, they introduced Erin to their dad. A 'SIGNED' PROPOSAL First, Gerry flew Erin’s parents to Omaha from New Jersey. Then the boys gave Erin an iPad mini, on which was a video of Joe and Patrick holding up signs that said, “I love you, lady in blue” – and “Will you marry our dad?” Then Gerry asked, “Will you make me the happiest man in the world?” WHO SAID DESSERT CAN’T BE FIRST? It was a cool 70 degrees the day before and the day after the wedding, but it was the hottest day of the year on their wedding day. The cake melted and the guests had to eat it before the meal, but it made for great memories. SAVOR THE DAY “At some point during the reception, step to the side and watch everyone,” Erin recommends. “It was really cool to see them smiling, laughing, dancing and having fun.”

tand aside, hydrangea. Peony is making an entance. “Brides are getting tired of hydrangeas,” explains Tracy Diehl, owner-designer at Events/Florals etcetera. “They've been popular so long, I'm seeing a resistance to them in bouquets.” But suggest peonies, and eyes light up. The bloom endears itself even more when brides learn that it's a symbol of good fortune and a happy marriage. To add to the infatuation, peonies are readily available in the spring and summer in the Midwest, making them a good value. English tea roses are new sweethearts, as well, although they can be more expensive and a bit harder to come by than their more common cousin, garden roses, Diehl says. “Roses are a wonderful value in general unless your wedding is around Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day” when prices can soar, she says. Still loving the hydrangea? Enhance its allure with a mix of hyacinth, delphinium and thistle in a large monochromatic display. In accents, gold is the new standard. “Nobody wanted gold two years ago,” Diehl says. “Now everybody is asking for it.” Silver has its share of fans, too. “But not

gold and silver together.” At least not so much in the Midwest, Diehl observes. Her brides are embrancing soft, romantic palettes. Interest is especially high in warm tones like buttery yellow, peach, blush, ivory and champagne. But, Diehl cautions, floral options aren't as great with warm pastels as they are with cool pastels. Unsure of what you want ? Your florist can help you finesse your style. “The first place I start is with the bride’s Pinterest board,” Diehl says. “It’s the quickest way to get an idea of what the couple likes.” Diehl recommends selecting your florist a minimum of six months in advance of your wedding. Ninety percent of Diehl's brides have their dress and know what style of wedding they want by the time they sit down with her for their first consultation. Many, however, are undecided on the color and style of their bridesmaids’ dresses. But that's not an issue, Diehl says. The most important thing is for your wedding to be on your preferred florist's calendar. “We can get your budget going, look at what you like and see where we can get the most for your dollar,” Diehl says. “Then we can worry about colors.”

Generally, the overall look is monochromatic, but you might consider pale green foliage for a contrast against your white dress.

CONTEMPORARY Defined by bright colors, dynamic shapes and an unexpected twist. Embellish with twigs, fruits, vegetables, herbs, succulents or other naturals, or glam it up with bejeweled accents. The simpler the dress, the more imaginative you can be.

WILDFLOWER Perfect for a casual wedding. Looser than other styles, with various shapes and colors. If you’re building this bouquet yourself, fresh-cut stems tend to wilt quickly when out of water. A hydration solution is recommended.

Hydrangeas and peonies are ideal for this style of bouquet. Calla lilies, tulips, gerbera daisies, sunflowers and lilies work well, too. Often economical, since filler is minimal and your florist only has to purchase one type of flower.

5 BASIC VASES

Doing your own flowers? Start with the right vase for your arrangements to look their best.

CLASSIC An hourglass that is narrow at the neck and full on the bottom. Good for mixed bouquets or a large bunch of the same kind of flower, preferably in the same color.

CYLINDER A straight column of glass. The larger the opening of the vase, the more flowers you’ll need. A clean, ultra-modern look, especially for lilies, calla lilies, roses and other flowers with strong architectural lines.

CUBE A square vase made of clear glass. Great for a mixed flower arrangement of short flowers and foliage. Often lined with a large Ti leaf to hide stems and floral foam.Â

BUD Traditionally holds a single stem with or without foliage. The lily is a great flower for this look, but a bunch of slenderstemmed flowers such as baby’s breath can work, too.

CERAMIC Can be one of the shapes listed above or an entirely different one. Use it to introduce more color into your flower arrangement or to hide flower stems.

A FAMILY AFFAIR Vincent proposed to Kara during a family weekend in Okoboji, Iowa. In addition to Kara’s relatives, Vincent arranged for his family to be there, too. SPECIAL MOMENT As Kara’s parents drove her to the church for the ceremony, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” came on the radio. “That was my great-grandpa’s favorite song,” Kara says. “At that moment I could feel him smiling over me and my nerves were calmed.” ALL THE RIGHT MOVES The bride’s 80-year-old grandpa insisted on dancing with every bridesmaid, and he lasted longer than the majority of the guests on the dance floor. “He has some serious dance moves!” Kara says. UNEXPECTED SERENADE Karaoke style, that is. The band unexpectedly asked the bride and groom to sing karaoke, which was “extremely entertaining” for the guests. SPARKS WERE FLYING The groom’s family has a fireworks business, so the couple knew a show was coming. But they weren’t expecting a choreographed show complete with heart-shaped fireworks and songs that were meaningful to them.

A PROPOSAL IN PICTURES … Layth talked Mollie into walking their puppy, Nala, around their apartment complex one cold winter evening. Along the way, they came across a Christmas tree that Layth had decorated with lights, ornaments – and nearly 100 photos of their five-year relationship. The ring was tucked under the tree. AND A MEMORY IN WRITING Mollie and Layth wrote cards to each other to exchange on their wedding day. After reading Layth’s card, Mollie turned around and saw Layth walking toward her. She says she will never forget the look on his face. “I remember feeling 100 emotions at once and thinking, ‘I’m so lucky he is mine.’” SHE COULD SEE IT IN HIS EYES It’s a tradition in the Arab culture to cut your wedding cake with a sword, and Layth was “beyond excited” about it. After he cut the cake, however, Mollie could see him staring at the frosting-covered sword. “Oh no, he’s going to lick it in front of all these people,” she thought. And he did! LOVE-FILLED ROOM “You think about how you’re going to feel on your big day and what it will be like for you and your husband. But you don’t realize how many people are so genuinely happy for you.”
