A sweet start to your happily ever after...

REAL WEDDING

BRETT BROONER PHOTOGRAPHY · DECEMBER 31, 2016 · HOLLAND PERFORMING ARTS CENTER

HOLE-IN-ONE For her 30th birthday in July, Tony took Sara on a golf outing. “How he convinced me to play golf on MY birthday is a miracle, but I was being a good sport, and I do enjoy a little golf every now and then.” On the final hole, he insisted she tap the ball into the hole. “After telling me that three times, I said, ‘Why does it matter? I shot like a 12 on this hole!’ and then while bending down to pick up the ball, I noticed a little gray bag just sitting there so delicately in the hole. I reached for it and the rest . . . well, it’s a big blur, but I do know that he asked, and I said yes!” ON TURNING THE BIG 3-OH “Apparently turning 30 isn’t so bad because this little lady got herself a fiancé! It was the most special, fun, exciting and joyous moment, and it was a thousand times better than anything I could have imagined.” OMAHA LOVE Since the reception was at the Holland Performing Arts Center, the couple played off the ambiance of the holiday lighting at Gene Leahy Mall. “That was the inspiration for our reception venue and reception theme,” shares Sara. MIRROR, MIRROR Sara’s favorite design touch? “Mirrored tabletops. They reflect so much light!” COMET FOR CUPID Sara knew her dress was the one almost at once. “I immediately thought and said aloud, ‘Tony will love this dress!’ and started crying. The ‘Comet’

gown was made for a fancy and fun New Year’s Eve wedding.” PATIENCE PAYS OFF Sara waited nine years for her “first look” moment. “As I’m walking down the aisle with my dad toward Tony, it was the most magical, happiest moment of my life. That is why we hired two photographers – for them to capture his reaction to seeing me for the first time and to capture those sweet moments with my dad as we walked down the aisle.” BIGGEST TIP “Know your strengths and hire the experts. I’m a visual, big-picture person, but executing small details stresses me out. I knew I wanted a wedding planner to handle the vendor negotiation, set-up, tear down, etc., so my mom and I could be stress-free, especially on the wedding day.” PARENTAL PLANNING Since wedding days can be so hectic, Sara’s advice would be to carve out time for the people closest to you. “Be sure to take a moment to reflect not only with your spouse, but also with your parents. I feel like I hardly saw my parents at our reception, and they’re my favorite people ever.” SAY HELLO TO THE MRS. “The first time I heard Tony refer to me as his wife made my heart explode into a million pieces. The endearment and pride he has when he introduces me as his wife makes me fall in love with him all over again.”

TIPPING POINT TEXT KIM CARPENTER

You want your wedding day to be perfect – and so do the people who work to create it. They deserve a little extra for a job superbly done. But how much should that extra be, and who should receive it? Etiquette dictates that if you are very satisfied with a service, you should tip those involved in delivering it, says Tracey Fricke, professional event planner and designer with Occasion Designed. Tips for a product like photography or videography typically aren’t expected, says Tyler King, owner of TK Imaging. Spencer Evers, general manager of Complete Weddings + Events, agrees. “Your photographer is there to make sure you are comfortable throughout the day and to capture moments in the making. At the end of the evening you may feel inclined to provide a tip, and you are encouraged to do so as long as your photographer (or videographer) has exceeded your expectations.” The same is true for an officiant who creates a ceremony that fits the couple’s style and personalities, says Shari McCormick, an ordained minister and owner of I Choose You Ceremonies.

24

CUSTOMARY AMOUNTS A tip for a service provider depends on the overall invoice. Fricke recommends 10 to 20 percent, “just like when you go out to eat or get your hair done.” For vendors who provide a product, 5 to 10 percent of the price is optional, she says. Make sure you’re not double-tipping. “If gratuity is included in your overall food and beverage bill, then an additional gift is not necessary,” Fricke explains. “Be very clear on all aspects of your event invoices,” and account for tips in your overall wedding budget.

SPRING 2017   weddingessentialsmagazine.com

TIMING The best time is after the service is concluded, or for reception staff, at the conclusion of the event. When it comes to photography products, Evers says some couples tip ahead thinking it will affect post-production, while others wait until after the editing. “All the above is appropriate – just make sure you are comfortable with your decision,” he advises. Prepare envelopes with tips in advance and label each for easy distribution the day of your wedding, Fricke suggests. Deliver the envelopes yourself or ask someone to do it on your behalf.

CASH OR CHECK? Cash is king but a check is equally appreciated, says King. “Many of these professionals are selfemployed and so the margin on what they actually earn is less than what a typical employee receives,” says Fricke. Above all, Evers stresses, tipping comes down to satisfaction. “If you are not happy, don’t tip,” he says. King adds, “A lot of our couples are already maxing out their budgets and just don’t have the wiggle room to tip everyone … When we do receive (a tip), it always makes us feel so much better about the job we did.”

TEXT CHRIS CHRISTEN

moon, what do you see? That’s the first step to determining where to go and what to do, says travel specialist Elise Aust of Custom Cruises & Travel in Omaha. Step two: Pick a destination that’s new to both of you. “I stress that if a couple (or half of the couple) has been there, done that, they need to pick an alternate destination,” says Aust. “A honeymoon is symbolic of a couple’s new life together. It signals the start of the marital relationship. You need a shared memory as a newly married couple, something that you can call your own.” Step three: Include your honeymoon in your budget, and don’t lose perspective of that budget. “The honeymoon expense is often overlooked,” Aust explains. “People can get carried away with wedding spending, and by the time they get around to booking their trip, they may be overspent.” In her experience, a delayed honeymoon rarely is a good idea. “Life happens and it keeps getting delayed.”

While recent world events and Zika virus warnings are having some influence on destination choices, Aust reminds couples to "keep things in perspective.” Her philosophy: “The younger you are, the farther out you should go.” Here, she shares her best-value picks. “These aren’t necessarily the lowest priced, but they offer the most value when you consider amenities and the convenience of air travel from Omaha.”

BEST-VALUE BEACH HONEYMOONS Head here if … you dream of a private cabana, chaise lounges, tropical drinks in your hands and no worries about what you’re going to do from hour to hour, but a whale-watching excursion certainly would be a cool way to spend a day. Bonus: In some cases, you can depart Omaha in the morning and be on a beach later that afternoon. Mexico • Cancun • Cabo San Lucas • Puerto Vallarta

South Pacific • Bora Bora • Tahiti • Fiji • The Cook Islands

An Unforgettable Event

The Players Club Golf & Country Club

The Caribbean • Jamaica • Dominican Republic • Aruba

BEST-VALUE CRUISES Opt for this if . . . you’d enjoy a different port of call every day, and dolphin or whale-watching would be a thrill. Bonus: Mid-luxury ships are an excellent price point for honeymooners. Insider intel: “Cruising no longer is what people do when they’re older,” Aust says. “All-inclusive fares and flexibility make the cruise experience competitive with what you’d find at a land resort for honeymooners.”

SPRING 2017   weddingessentialsmagazine.com

BEST-VALUE ADVENTURE HONEYMOONS Head here if … you’re eco-conscious and can see yourself exploring remote waterfalls, paddle-boarding, snorkeling and having maximum adventure with minimal impact on the environment. At the end of the day, you’ll take a massage and a quiet, romantic dinner for two over a night on the town (because the latter is nonexistent here). Bonus: No spring breakers! Airfare tends to be more expensive and travel time is longer, but the experience is broader. Insider intel: Costa Rica is eco tourism on steroids,.“It has beaches, volcanos, flora and fauna. You can do an allinclusive resort, but that’s not what I’d recommend,. Instead, take three or four days and hike a rainforest, explore a cloud forest and discover a remote waterfall. Then spend your last three days on a beach property relaxing.” Belize has a “spectacular reef for diving and snorkeling, some amazing all-inclusive properties and unique villages along the cays (small chain of islands) accessible by seaplane or ferry.” Central America • Belize • Costa Rica • Nicaragua • Panama South America • Argentina • Brazil • Chile • Machu Picchu, Peru

Call For Private Bridal Party Reservations.

BEST-VALUE EUROPEAN HONEYMOONS Head here if . . . you’ve never been abroad. Bonus: Airfare to Europe is fairly economical right now and likely to remain so through 2017. Insider intel: Dismiss the idea of getting a rail pass and jamming seven countries into two weeks. “That’s a lot of schlepping of bags and checking in and out of hotels,” Aust says. “Spend a few quality days in fewer cities.” Europe • Amsterdam and Copenhagen • London and Paris • Spain, Portugal, Morocco • Italy: Venice, Florence, Rome, Amalfi Coast • Ireland: Rent a car and keep an open-ended itinerary. The fun is in wandering the countryside.

PASSPORT ALERT A valid passport is required for travel outside the United States. Apply for it well in advance of your planned departure, advises Elise Aust of Custom Cruises & Travel in Omaha. The U.S. Immigration Service recommends allowing six to eight weeks for processing. A newly married traveler with a valid passport, however, doesn’t need to worry about applying for an update. “Your passport name does not need to match your driver’s license name,” Aust says. “Most couples live out the life of their passports before making name changes. Simply book reservations in your maiden name for international travel.” If you already hold a valid passport, be sure to check the expiration date. Most countries require at least six months of remaining validation from your scheduled date of return. “You don’t want to chance being seriously injured in an accident, for example, and stuck in a foreign country because your passport has expired.” Also, check new passport rules about photo requirements.

REAL WEDDING

M. STOKES PHOTOGRAPHY · SEPTEMBER 24, 2016 · THE DIAMOND ROOM

SIBLING SUBTERFUGE Adam proposed to Whitney during an impromptu photo shoot with his youngest sister, who claimed she needed some images with emotion for her photography class. “After photos at a couple of locations, Adam got down on one knee and asked me to become his wife,” recounts Whitney. “The best part, we have it all captured on camera. What more can a girl ask for?” WHEN WEDDING GUESTS MISBEHAVE After the reception, a few guests continued the party in their hotel room. “The party got a little carried away before the police got called,” the bride confides. “It was pretty funny seeing Mean Streets of Omaha tweet about our wedding party.” HEAD TABLE: “I couldn’t find a tablecloth that I absolutely loved for our head table. (It) just wasn’t something I wanted to settle on; I wanted it to stand out. We rented the linen from La Tavola in California ... It was the perfect touch to the prettiest head table I have ever seen (but) I might be a little biased!” SPECIAL MESSAGES Whitney gave her mother and her mothers-in-law handkerchiefs embroidered with personal sentiments. She had patches with heartfelt messages sewn onto Adam and her father’s ties. FIRST FIRST LOOK Whitney wanted a first look for her dad, which resulted in a cherished wedding memory. “I don’t think my dad has ever looked at me like he did that day. He made me feel so beautiful.” SECOND FIRST LOOK When Whitney and Adam had their first look, the bride wasn’t about to take it slow.

“I couldn’t walk fast enough toward Adam. Our photographer even had to ask me to slow down! THIRD FIRST LOOK After Adam and Whitney finished their first look, Adam’s dad spied the bride for the first time. “He tried to pretend that he didn’t see me, because he didn’t think he was supposed to … He started to cry and greeted me with the biggest hug.” TIES THAT BIND Adam loves the outdoors, so Whitney found a unique way to incorporate his passion into their wedding day. “For our unity ceremony, we tied a fisherman’s knot. We practiced it for many months leading up to our wedding day. It is a keepsake that we will forever cherish.” LIVE IN THE MOMENT “Take time for you and your new husband on your wedding day,” advises Whitney. “Step back and admire everyone who came to celebrate the two of you. Step away for a few moments and enjoy each other; soak it all in. You are finally husband and wife!” MARITAL BLISS The best part of marital life? “Eating ice cream anytime we want,” Whitney jokes. “Our love for ice cream is out of this world. Now that we don’t have wedding attire to fit into, we can make a latenight ice cream run and not feel too guilty about it!” LIGHT UP THE GRILL The couple’s favorite gift was a basketful of grilling essentials, including marinades, spices and a gift certificate to a local meat market. “Grilling out is one meal we enjoy doing together,” laughs Whitney.

TRENDS TEXT CHRIS CHRISTEN PHOTOGRAPHY TRUE COTTON WEDDINGS

GOODBYE, TRADITION Today's couples are having nothing to do with 'something old'

If there’s one

universal trend in weddings, it’s alternatives to tried-and-true traditions, especially among millennials. “Millennials are reinventing the wedding industry,” says Sarah Paladino of Eddie’s Catering. “They’re putting their own twist on tradition and adding their own flair to their special day.” And their focus is squarely on the guest experience. “Many have broad networks of friends and have been in or to many weddings at this point in their lives, and they want something different,” observes Tracey Fricke of Occasion Designed. “Overwhelmingly, creating a fun, unique experience is very important, and they’re having fun themselves designing those distinctive elements.” Bucking convention is a major part of that process. “Millennials want everything memorable and welcoming and relaxed,” observes Brett Foster of Wowfactore.

54

SPRING 2017   weddingessentialsmagazine.com

Paladino sees a common denominator in the millennial formula: “There is a level of surprise. This can be the venue, the menu or an activity at the reception. Millennials are all about incorporating fun like piñatas and bounce houses and action in their wedding. Older wedding couples stick with the traditional evening reception with a plated meal or a traditional two-entrée buffet, followed with cake and dancing. A millennial couple might choose a nontraditional time slot for the ceremony and reception. We’re catering one for 9 a.m.” As ideas grow, Fricke reminds couples: “Be mindful of your overall guest experience when designing your wedding. Be thoughtful of who your guests are when deciding locations, menus, entertainment, etc.” For example, grandma probably won’t be down for a bounce house, so include a game of croquet on the side. (continued, page 56)

INTERACTIVE ELEMENTS “Experience, experience, experience!” says Tracy Diehl, owner of Events Etcetera. “As a general rule, millennials place less value on possessions (and) stuff and more value on doing and experiencing.” Experiential options include: • Create-your-own (fill in the blank). “Fresh is hot!” Fricke says, with guests designing part of their meal, dessert or drink. • Culinary installations. Eddie’s Catering recently created a trapeze-like food station, where hors d’oeuvres or desserts were served on alternating tiered boards suspended by ropes from the ceiling. • Multiple bars. Why stop at one when you can give more people a taste of the fun! (Sangria, mimosa, hot cocoa, hot apple cider, milkshake or flavored water bar, anyone?) • Action stations. Wowfactore recently created a "Sweet & Salty Grandmas" food station featuring beloved family recipes from the newlyweds' grandmothers. Signage about the items and photos of the grandmothers through the years were a conversation piece. • Family-style dining (wedding party included). Pass the pot roast and lasagna, please! • Photo booth and selfie stations. “They’re something to do and have fun with other people,” says Diehl. “The technology is evolving fast in this area.” • Pre- and post-reception celebrations. The former, a more formal cocktail gathering. The latter, a more spontaneous way to close out the night. OUTSIDE-THE-BOX FARE • Custom drinks, created by a mixologist who knows how to entertain a crowd. • Edible flowers as garnishes for signature drinks. • Edible gold as decoration for desserts. • Gluten-free menus. • Late-night snacks with a story. (South O-Dawgs – yum!)

FARE TO REMEMBER Traci Miller and Scott Evans took their wedding reception to gastro-pub heights with no fewer than six food stations. Here’s what was on the menu for the culinary extravaganza on October 29, 2016, at Omar Arts & Events in Omaha: • Fajita bar with choice of steak or chicken, sour cream, cheddar cheese, black beans, guacamole, peppers and onions. • Slider station, featuring sliced prime rib with horsey sauce or au jus, grilled mixed veggies (eggplant, zucchini, mushrooms and onions drizzled in a basil-infused olive oil). • Mashed-potato bar with bacon, chives, sour cream, beef gravy and cheddar cheese fixings. • Chicken and waffles with bourbon bacon syrup and pecan maple butter. • Donut holes (warmed in a cast-iron skillet) and optional toppings of caramel sauce, pow-

dered sugar, cinnamon sugar, whipped cream and sprinkles. • Sundaes with choice of chopped nuts, chocolate sauce and maraschino cherries. • Assorted dessert bites (brownies, mini fruit pies and assorted bars). • Popcorn bar featuring Nuts on Clark of Chicago, the groom’s favorite, with M&Ms, peanuts and Reese’s Pieces as add-ins. Continuing the food theme, the bride and her maid of honor tossed DIY sucker bouquets – a surprise treat for the kids. As the party drew to a close, guests received a box of two Krispy Kreme donuts to be enjoyed as a late-night snack or for breakfast the next day. “The variety of food was a huge hit,” said the bride’s mother, Lori Miller. “It’s one of the top things people remember about the wedding.”

to wedding planning, so do it early. How else will you know if you really can afford the venue and vendors you want? But if you’re crunching the numbers yourself, be leery of online budget tools. Many are inaccurate and unrealistically low, says professional wedding planner Tracey Fricke of Occasion Designed. And remember to factor in service charges, gratuities, delivery and pick-up fees, taxes, etc. “Those can quickly add up,” Fricke cautions. Most couples have some element that is most important to them and not open for compromise. “It is good to identify that element, so you can be ready to give a little in other areas, if needed,” Fricke says. “I think everyone has a budget in their head, but it’s hard to comprehend how quickly everything adds up,” says Brett Foster of Wowfactore. “Often in the process some fun, labor-intensive ideas get cut for cost reasons. But if the couple is willing, we can usually find a DIY way to honor the idea.”

ON WHO PAYS . . . More and more frequently, expenses are being split between the couple’s families. “Sometimes we are seeing the bill split three ways, with parents and the couple each covering one-third of the cost, observes Sarah Paladino of Eddie’s Catering.

REAL WEDDING

THE EYE & HAND PROJECT · OCTOBER 15, 2016 · LIED LODGE & ARBOR DAY FARM

1 + 1 = 2 The couple met in a high school math class when Kait, as a middle schooler, skipped ahead two grades to take geometry. Brady, a sophomore, sat behind her in class, but they didn’t talk much. Secretly, he told his friends that he thought the shy eighth-grader was cute. “At the same time, my best friend and future maid of honor and I made lists of our ‘Top 10 Cutest High School Boys,’ and Brady was my No. 1 pick,” confides Kait. WILL YOU WEAR MY JERSEY? Two years later, Brady finally built up the courage to ask Kait out, but she thought he was looking for a tutor. “I was shocked when he texted to ask me to wear his football jersey at an upcoming game! Eight-and-a-half years later, the rest is history!” SWEET SERENADE Brady is a musician, and during a show at Ditmars Orchard in Council Bluffs, he concluded his set with an original song about Kait that ended with the refrain, “Marry me.” Brady left the stage, walked over to Kait, got down on a knee, took out a ring and proposed. LET THEM EAT CAKE – LOTS OF IT! The bride and groom had six cakes. One was a Danish kransekake, a bride family tradition made of tiered circular layers. Brady had two groom’s cakes. One was shaped like a record player with “Domestic Blend” – his band's name – piped on the record label. The other was shaped like a guitar and decorated like the guitar the couple painted together when they first started dating.

DUTCH TREAT For the late-night snack, the couple served stroopwafels, Dutch cookies made by Brady’s family, in special little bags with tags explaining their significance as a groom family tradition. FAMILY AFFAIR Both families pitched in to make the wedding perfect. Kait’s mom and sisters tied twine and eucalyptus to each wedding invitation and edged each program with gold paint. Kait’s grandmother put together welcome baskets for overnight guests. Brady’s mother decorated the arbor. “Overall, all our decor was a labor of love from the people closest to us.” KNOCKING ON THE DOOR Brady turned a couple of old doors he bought for $20 into a reception seating chart display. FATHER-DAUGHTER DANCE Kait’s father came to the hotel room where Kait was waiting by herself before the ceremony. In a sweet, spontaneous moment, they danced and played air guitar to U2’s “Beautiful Day.” SOMETHING BLUE, BORROWED & OLD Kait carried a clutch made from her grandfather’s tie. Inside was “something blue” – a handkerchief with a blue brooch that Brady’s grandmother had kissed with lipstick just before passing away earlier in the year. For her “something borrowed,” the bride wore a pinky ring from her Grandma Emilie, which originally belonged to Kait’s great-great-great-grandmother. The “something old” was a garter that Kait’s Grandma Shirley wore on her wedding day more than 50 years ago.

REAL WEDDING

ANDREA NUXOLL PHOTOGRAPHY · JANUARY 14, 2017 · THE LIVING ROOM

LOVE FLOATS While paddleboarding at her parents' lake house, Lane spotted a box floating in the water and told Leah to nab it. She fished it out of the water and casually opened the box on her paddleboard. “Lane looked like he was about to have a heart attack. When I saw a glimpse of a ring in the box, I quickly shut it and said, “Oh, my gosh, Lane! Someone lost their ring!” When Leah finally took a good look at the ring, she realized it was her grandmother’s – something she had always wanted. MR. T During the proposal, the couple’s paddleboards somehow got locked in a stabilizing “T” shape. “He got down on one knee on the paddleboard in the middle of the lake … an impressive feat of athleticism, if you ask me!” laughs Leah. PUT SOME RINGS ON IT The couple decorated the reception hall with three large rings of greenery and candles suspended from the ceiling. “They were absolutely beautiful and brought the room together,” the bride says, still thrilled. STAR POWER Lane played Husker football for four years, and many of his teammates attended the wedding. “My two little cousins were going around getting autographs on the backs of their dinner menus,” Leah shares. “I’m sure all the guys were very flattered, but to see how excited my little cousins were was a sweet, funny moment.” BRRR! The couple married in winter, so temperatures were chilly. “The first word that comes to mind is ‘freezing,’ ” says Lane. “Outdoor pictures in January are not for the faint of

heart, but I’m so glad we braved the cold.” HE SAID/SHE SAID: “Leah is a kind, meaningful, intentional person who treats others with compassion and is a huge supporter of her family, her friends and me. She is a beautiful, intelligent woman, and I’m blessed to have her as my partner, friend and teammate for life,” Lane says. “Lane pushes me to be the best possible version of myself, and he leads by holding himself to a high standard. He is extremely loyal, intelligent and has a massive heart for others,” Leah says. MOTHER OF THE BRIDE TO THE RESCUE! Leah was living in New York City, and Lane was living in Montana, so the bride’s mom took on the brunt of the planning responsibility. “I will never be able to thank her enough for all her hard work. My mom did a great job of delegating tasks, and ultimately my wedding was more than I could have imagined or hoped for!” TRY TO RELY “No matter your personality type or how much control you have over the planning process, find people you trust to take care of the details on your wedding day,” advises the bride. “You should not have to worry about the small things on your big day. Just take it all in and enjoy every moment.” COUPLE TIME “It’s important to spend time together without talking about wedding details,” Leah says. “Looking back during that phase in our lives, I think we did a good job of prioritizing each other over wedding planning – but it wasn’t always easy!”
