Forget traditional recipes; Bass’ art starts with three questions and a flurry of fresh ingredients to match your taste and mood. First, he wants to know your spirit(s) of choice. And, just like that, the wizard of craft cocktails has concocted the ultimate libation — just for you. Here, Bass shows how it’s done.

REAL WEDDING
Sarah & Kevin DA N A DA M E WO O D
SEPTEMBER 8, 2018
CHRISTMAS SURPRISE Sarah Lukas and Kevin McMahon met online, and after a year of dating, Sarah suspected that Kevin might propose on Christmas Day. He gave her a pair of sunglasses, then asked if she had looked in her stocking. When she found nothing, she started to tear up. But then she turned around, and Kevin was down on one knee. “I guess there is one more gift,” he said, pulling the ring from his pocket. The rest of the day was spent sharing and celebrating their happiness and good news with family and friends. WEDDING VISION Sarah wanted a classic, elegant, timeless event with a touch of English countryside charm and country club sophistication. Kevin’s dad, Mike, made her wedding day dreams come true by building a greenery backdrop for the reception. DETAILS MATTER Every element was important, from the engraved invitations, to the hand-calligraphed seating cards, to the greenery backdrop. “Branding and coordination were highly important to ensure that this was one of the best events I’ve ever produced,” says Sarah, a wedding planner. Kevin thought she did an amazing job. “She has a great sense of style, and on our wedding day it really showed.” Sarah says they hit the jackpot with their goals. “We wanted our guests to enjoy themselves, and we wanted to soak up everyone’s love and support. It was everything we’d ever dreamed of.” SPECIAL MOMENTS They wanted a fun way to engage with their guests at the reception so instead of

doing a dollar dance they tended bar for tips. The best man’s speech was one of the funniest moments of the day, and Sarah said the sweetest was the speech by her dad. The priest who married them is a good friend of Sarah’s, and “aired Kevin and Sarah’s dirty laundry” during the homily. They had taken dance lessons to ensure that their first dance was perfect, but everyone got their groove on by the end of the night. “The band was amazing.” SWEET TREAT White favor boxes, tied with blue ribbon and sealed with a wax “M,” contained the couple’s favorite cookies from Eileen’s and a note that said: “How sweet it is to be loved by you.” The guestbook was a matted caricature of the couple, which everyone signed. LATE START Since they married later in life, they’ve had to learn to compromise and communicate and include each other in big decisions. Sarah doesn’t relax often, and Kevin has had to get used to her busy social calendar. One of their favorite gifts was a gift certificate for a cooking class. “We love this because it gave us a chance to learn something new together.” Kevin gave Sarah diamond earrings; she gave him a bottle opener made from a baseball bat used at a Cubs game. GREAT DOG DAD Sarah says Kevin is always making her laugh when she least expects it. He reminds her not to take life so seriously. “He’s so sweet and caring, too — which shows in how he takes care of me and our new puppy, Obi.”

Time together immediately after the wedding is something every newlywed couple needs. Where you go and what you do, of course, depends on your time frame, budget and interests. “Everybody wants something different,” says Abby Bebout, lead travel advisor with Travel Design Lounge in Omaha. “For some couples, it might be the biggest trip they’ve ever taken. For others, it might be a quick weekend getaway.” Most honeymoon arrangements fall somewhere in between. If you’re undecided about a destination, a travel advisor can point you in the right direction based on the type of experience you want. Here, Bebout shares insight on honeymoon-worthy destinations. Which one fits you best?

Think locally, act globally STORY MICHELLE BAZIS + MARJIE DUCEY
Nothing says you’re an earth-loving couple more than an environmentally friendly wedding. Here are 10 tips for making your day beautiful and green. While paper invitations are still the way to go for the wedding (sorry, not sorry), it’s totally acceptable to send save-the-date announcements and invitations for a shower, rehearsal dinner or post-wedding brunch via email. Economize on your wedding invites with recycled paper; one-color, two-sided printing; and a request to RSVP by email.
1
Make it a sentimental occasion by restyling your mother’s vintage dress or shop for a pre-owned dress. Countless gowns are waiting to be re-purposed or re-worn. Some brides are trying to recoup the cost of their weddings by selling their décor, too. Check out websites such as wedding-recycle.com, tradesy.com/wedding-

decorations, bridalgaragesales.com and thebudgetsavvybride.com/used-weddingdecor-online. Reduce the need for electricity and host a truly natural ceremony outdoors. You’ll help your budget and the environment because you won’t need as much lighting, especially if it’s during the day. Stash your out-of-town guests at a hotel with LEED certification. You also can find venues with the same Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification if you are planning a winter event.
3
Hire a farm-to-table caterer and offer a menu that reflects the season and includes organic, plant-based options. That will reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The local food movement is growing quickly, so don’t worry that it will limit your options.
4
Avoid single-use plastics and straws. Reach for reusable or biodegradable utensils. Swap plastic foam cups for paper versions or even better, glassware or china.
5 6
Incorporate lots of greenery; it makes everything feel organic and fresh. For bouquets and centerpieces, check out amaranthus. It comes in several lush colors and has a wild look. Its cascading “tails” of green floral clusters work especially well with roses, peonies and tulips. Amaranthus also dries well — in case you want to pull out some stems or preserve your full bouquet.
Support local makers by shopping for favors at your favorite farmers market. Honey, maple syrup, fresh-picked apples, handmade soaps and organic extra virgin olive oil are examples of gifts your guests will actually use! Have a lot of gardeners on your guest list? Give them seed packets or bulbs.
7
Provide flower petals or leaves for tossing. Or go to ecofetti.com or etsy.com/market/biodegradable_confetti if you must have the real deal. Just make sure to check at your venue; many don’t want to handle the cleanup. Rice can be harmful to birds and slippery to walk on. And bubbles often are prohibited indoors.

ed velvet cake is requested for every birthday and special occasion in the Muelleman family. It’s the only kind that Daniel Muelleman likes. So, it wasn’t surprising he wanted it for his wedding to Nicole Cherney. “Neither of us was super excited about ordering a random cake anyway,” Nicole says. The couple got together with Daniel’s mother, Diane, the week before the wedding to make the cake. The family recipe is based on a version from the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York. The couple cut a ceremonial slice for themselves at the reception; the

rest of the 8-inch round cake went in the freezer (guests were served an assortment of bite-sized desserts). Red velvet cake wasn’t the only thing the couple whipped up for their marriage celebration. Nicole was in dental school at Creighton University when they got engaged. She had worked with gold to make crowns, so why not wedding bands? Nicole studied the process and together they melted down gold from a charm bracelet that belonged to Nicole’s grandmother. yleigh Smart wanted to carry a big bouquet. One that would make a statement. She just didn’t realize one thing. “It was so heavy,’’ she says. “It was massive.’’ Flowers were an important part of her August 2018 wedding to Dez Austin. She made the copper flower arch used for the ceremony and reception, adding an arrangement of peonies, greenery and garden roses from Bloom Works. She wanted her bridesmaids to have beautiful flowers to carry, too. “Not just a few that looked kind of dinky,’’ she says. Kyleigh’s bouquet was about 2½ feet wide and weighed what felt like 5 pounds. Her bridesmaids took turns holding it, and when they arrived at the reception, the bouquet went straight into a vase at the head table. She wanted a special surprise for Dez, so she had friend and baker Kelsey Runyon design a cake in the shape of a Modelo beer bottle. It was chocolate with strawberry frosting, Dez's favorite. “He really loves Modelo and other Mexican beers,’’ Kyleigh says. Guests were treated to cakes of lemon-raspberry, chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. Their wedding cake was almond. That way, everyone was bound to enjoy their favorite flavor.

lizabeth and David Vlock’s families are spread far and wide, and get-togethers are few. The couple wanted a way to share the stories of their lives with relatives at their wedding. So they reached back to their childhoods and pulled out photos of themselves at ages that corresponded with their table numbers. Table 1 had pictures of the bride and groom at age 1, Table 2 had photos of the 2-year-olds, etc., all the way up to 15. A sign at the bar showed them when they were 21. “It seemed much more personalized than a piece of paper that said 1-2-3,” Elizabeth says. The couple arranged another touching family moment at the reception. While they were doing some wedding planning, Elizabeth’s mom shared how she didn’t get to dance to her favorite song at her reception. The D.J. didn’t have it on his playlist so he subbed “Endless Love” for the couple’s first dance. Elizabeth arranged to have “Don’t Know Much” played for her parents, Susan and Greg Keuter. She started it off with “Endless Love” then switched over to their favorite. “It made my mom cry,” Elizabeth says. “It was a total surprise. They didn’t know it was coming.” — MARJIE DUCEY

The newlyweds also had whisky tasting and cigar bars, which were more to Tait’s taste. They both have a sweet tooth, so they thought it would be fun to have a candy version, too. They stocked the bar with Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, M&M’s, Ring Pop hard candy and Gummi Bears, all in the colors of their wedding. But because Summer is a dental hygienist, they also ordered tooth brushes with their names and wedding date as favors. “That was really popular,’’ Tait says. “A lot people know we’re really big into clean teeth.” — MARJIE DUCEY KATIE + NEIMAN/COMPLETE WEDDINGS + EVENTS

nce guests figured out it wasn’t ice cream, the potato martini bar at Summer Scorvo and Tait Gilmore’s reception was a hit. Potatoes are Summer’s favorite food, especially mashed, so they had to be part of the celebration. Guests enjoyed toppings of cheese, bacon and sour cream. But that white ball in a martini glass confused people at first. “I think people were really shocked,” Tait says. “They went through it rather quickly, so that was good.” Kimmylea Taylor with LimeLight Expressions had fun with the couple’s unusual request and concocted two mashed martinis especially for them.

MAXIMIZING YOUR BUDGET STORY MICHELLE BAZIS + CHRIS CHRISTEN

ccommodating the masses can sabotage a wedding budget in short order. When you find yourself sacrificing details and compromising on essentials for the sake of the guest count, it’s time to re-examine your priorities. One approach is to downsize your event to maximize your budget. With 50 or fewer guests, your options suddenly switch from economical to extravagant. Here are five areas where you can reallocate your spend for a wedding that guests will rave about for years. VENUE Select a gorgeous setting and save a bundle in decorations. Think museum, conservatory, boutique hotel, botanical garden or art gallery. These spaces often can accommodate both ceremony and reception, which can be kinder to your budget.

FOOD AND BEVERAGE An open bar (beer, wine and a signature drink) and sit-down table service will enhance the reception experience for your guests. With money saved on décor, you could serve hors d’oeuvres between the ceremony and reception, add courses to the meal or upgrade your entrée options. ENTERTAINMENT Celebrate your heritage in a special way; have your ceremony musicians play background music through dinner; bring in your favorite band for dancing; set up a photo booth and use it as an interactive guest book; rent yard games for the kids. All of these things will keep guests engaged and sticking around to see what’s next. SHOWSTOPPER Every great party has a stellar finish. Then Megan’s feelings changed, and she started dropping hints that John kept missing. “Finally a mutual friend told John to just ask me out, and he did the next day during a Packers football game (our favorite team),” Megan says. DON’T FALL John proposed on the lookout tower at Mahoney State Park. Both were shaking so much that Megan worried the ring would drop to the ground. “As I was saying ‘yes,’ I grabbed the ring and stuck it on my finger.” They got pictures of the event, and video, too, and enjoy reliving the event. PERFECT LOCATION Megan’s rustic-romantic wedding theme fit the location perfectly. She wasn’t afraid to ask for something different from her vendors, either, in the configuration of the hayloft for both the ceremony and the reception for the convenience of their 300 guests. The space was flipped from ceremony seating to reception seating during the cocktail hour. The barn was so beautiful, that all Megan felt she needed to add were elegant table decorations. SPECIAL TOUCHES Megan entered the room to an instrumental version of “How Does a Moment Last Forever?” from Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast.” “Walking down the long aisle toward John was nothing short of a fairy-tale wedding,” Megan says. “The ceremony was beautiful.” She incorporated a few family heirlooms but wishes she had done more. “It would be special to have those professionally

photographed along with other details of the wedding,” she says. PERFECT SHOTS Having a good wedding photographer was most important to Megan; a good DJ and an open bar were musts for her parents. Megan wanted their photographs to have a soft, old-glam quality and sought out vendors who could give her that style and who also had shot in the space before to give her an idea of what her own photos might look like. “We also paid a little extra to have a second shooter. This allowed us to get additional photos as well as the same photos at different angles (like our first look).” WHO’S THE BRIDE? Megan says her dad’s speech was the funniest moment of the day. “He was describing the day John came to ask them if he could marry me, but instead of my dad using my name, he was nervous and accidentally used my mom’s name (Janis). Everyone burst out laughing.” In a sweet moment, she and John paused to savor how everyone had come to celebrate their marriage. “It was such a good feeling having everyone we love in the same room and each person having an impact in some way on our lives up until that point,” she says. WHAT’S FOR DINNER? Megan says cooking has been the toughest adjustment since their marriage. Learning to do it for two has been a “trial-anderror” experience. She’s thrilled that John is willing to be so helpful with day-to-day chores. John didn’t realize that Megan was such a Christmas fanatic.“Megan is one of the sweetest and most thoughtful people I know,” he says. “She brings so much joy to my life.”
