HONEYMOON

Grand Cayman getaway STORY + PHOTOGRAPHY MICHELLE BAZIS

B

each honeymoons and vacations are always a good idea. Depending on your travel style, you might prefer an all-inclusive stay or an all-out adventure. For a little bit of both, Grand Cayman could be the destination for you. This Caribbean island offers a happy balance of ocean activities and tranquil relaxation. There’s not much surf here, but the trade-off is crystal-clear water and sugarysoft sand. Here are highlights from my recent travels there. FAVORITE SNORKELING SPOTS Cemetery Beach, for an underwater paradise full of coral and brilliant-colored fish of all shapes and sizes. Spotts Beach, for the sea turtles. Rum Point Beach, for the clearest water I’ve ever seen and stingrays within 100 feet of the beach. Starfish Point is just down the road. Wreck of the Gamma, for easy snorkeling right off the beach. Go in the morning on a clear day for fewer people and clear viewing of the shipwreck and fish.

date nights and getaway weekends. Thanks to the prevalence of online registries, few gifts are even brought to the actual event any more. Couples should register six to eight months before the wedding, giving guests plenty of options for that perfect gift. Trending for 2020:

The modern gift registry is all about experiences, at home and away

MONEY Cash is always popular, especially if a couple is looking for some extra spending money for their honeymoon or trying to save for a house. Some wedding registry options fill that need, allowing couples to register for anything from adventurous experiences to a down payment. How do you word that on your details card or wedding website? “It can be a touchy thing,” Osborne says. “Make it warm and fuzzy.” Say something like, “We’re saving for the vacation of our dreams” or “We’re building the home of our dreams.” CHARITY INSTEAD Some established couples would rather see money for a wedding gift go where it might be

ore and more couples are straying from traditional gift requests. That’s not surprising, with the average age of first-time brides and grooms pushing 30 and second marriages on the rise. “A couple who is getting married in 2020 probably has lived together for awhile and

needed more. Osborne’s brother and sister-in-law got married at Christmas and asked guests to join them in making a contribution to a local food bank. The gesture, she says, captured the spirit already has two toasters. They don’t need a third,” says Dana Osborne of Dana Osborne Design. Her observation in helping couples with their invitations and enclosures: “They really just want cash.” Experiential gifts, such as a gym membership or a gourmet coffee subscription, are becoming more and more common. Ditto for gift cards

of the season. In another situation, a bride’s younger brother had died from brain cancer, so the newlyweds asked guests to donate to a nonprofit organization that had helped the family through a difficult time. “Every couple seems to have an organization that’s really close to their heart,”

Osborne says. If you have a special fund for receiving cash gifts, include the website on your details card.

Barware — a favorite with grooms — is extremely hot right now, she says. Musthaves include a fine crystal decanter and double old-fashioned glasses. For everyday use, couples are gravitating toward white ceramic dinnerware, classic stainless steel flatware, wooden salad bowls and metallic martini trays that can double as serving or display pieces, Farley says.

Let’s ask the Wedding Expert Blaine Muhle, Owner of The Fountains Ballroom

My Top 3 Tricks and Trends for a Fall Wedding! What’s a big consideration for picking a Fall wedding date?

areas are three perfect ways to add that extra touch you’re looking for. It’s crisp, yet unexpected, and a vibe that we can get behind!

We live in the Midwest, so when most people think Fall, they think of one word. Football. We get it, we love football! Avoid complaints of wedding date, the live streaming of games during ceremony, the loud eruptions of the crowd during reception. It’s your day and you want everyone’s full attention! Many venues will offer discounts for non-Saturday dates. Save on cost and the stress of football season interruptions. Also, keep in mind that Fall is the start of holiday season. Avoid holiday weekends so you won’t lose wedding guests due to other events or gatherings. After all, this is your one day! Soak in every last minute of it.

At The Fountains Ballroom, we have an in house design team that can help to bring your vision to life. With an endless inventory of design elements & linens, no detail goes untouched. We can also create your florals, whether for bridal party or display. Plan all of these details out in our design meetings and sit back and enjoy your wedding day while we execute the beautiful event.

At The Fountains we offer discounts for Friday and Sunday dates, as well as “off-season” dates of the year! Here’s a trick, weddings can happen any day of the week and many in the industry will treat you with offers or promos for choosing one! Why not take advantage of it!?

Can you Mix Traditional & Non-Traditional Floral Elements for a Fall event? Fall is the perfect time to break from the norm of strictly floral elements as design. Think of all of the fun things you can incorporate, while also emphasizing that autumn theme! We’re seeing pampas grass & wheat, branches & pumpkins. All of these can add that extra dimension to your design while tying in with your fall colored florals. Luscious covered archways, ceiling displays, and accented furniture

Do Statement Wedding Desserts make a unique Fall reception touch? Wedding dessert has become more than just cake, nuts, and mints over the years. Statement wedding desserts are quite the trend and this is not going away any time soon! You’ve seen cupcakes & donuts walls, but let’s take this Fall theme to another level. I’m talking pie on a stick, candied apples, s’mores or hot chocolate stations. Not only can you incorporate your theme and colors into your desserts, but you can create some cute favors as well! What about little bottles of honey or maple syrup at each place setting? Pick something unique or specific to you as a couple. You’ll be adding in that special touch and leaving everyone with memories that won’t leave them. The Fountains Ballroom partners with many vendors for treats & sweets. Talk to them along with several other greats in the industry at our Open House coming up on October 22nd, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. More info to come about the event on our Facebook page: The Fountains Ballroom.

“ Our wedding at The Fountains Ballroom in Glenwood, Iowa was nothing but amazing! The entire planning process from start to finish with Blaine was seamless. We could not be happier with our choice to get married at The Fountains. I would highly recommend this venue for elegant bliss!”

Videographers record those precious moments for the future

I

t’s no surprise that Kelly LaFleur and Kyle Ranney both grew up to be wedding videographers. LaFleur was fascinated with her parents’ 1991 wedding video as a child and watched it over and over again. Ranney learned about the craft from his grandfather, who documented car and motorcycle races on Super 8 film. While a wedding photographer can be a higher priority for some couples, a videographer adds another dimension to the story of your wedding day. “It truly brings peace of mind to the wedding day,” says LaFleur, owner of Lacework Films. “It allows couples to relax and enjoy their day instead of worrying about remembering a moment for years to come.” Ranney, who operates The Ranneys Film Co. with wife Kayleen, says videography provides memories not just for the couple, but for the rest of the family and children to come. Kids like LaFleur. The pros have these tips for selecting a videographer. WHO TO CHOOSE When hiring a videographer, LaFleur says, it’s not only important to get emotionally attached to their work but to truly like them as a person.

68

FALL 2019

“Your photographer and videographer spend the most time with you on your wedding day (more time than you spend with your spouse, even). If you ever feel during a phone call or meeting before booking that they may not be the right fit, go with your gut,” she says. “There is the perfect videographer out there for you.” Watch as many videos as possible to help you narrow the field. It’s hard not to be budget-conscious, Ranney says, but it may be worth paying more for someone who’s a better fit and/or will deliver the quality that’s important to you.

poor sound? » Lighting. Can you see faces, or are they in the shadows? » Special effects. Are they tacky? Or tasteful and graceful? WHAT IT COSTS Prices range widely, from about $1,500 to $8,000. In the Nebraska market, $3,000 is mid-range, according to LaFleur. “Below that price range you are generally incurring a risk,” Ranney says. “It would be hard for someone to run a legitimate business “Don’t assume that all videographers are the same even if their footage looks similar,” LaFleur says. your money. How many hours of filming are included? What’s the video’s finished length? A 12- to 15-minute video will have a much better chance of capturing the day than a 5-minute highlights reel, the pros say. Typically, a videographer will shoot the entire day. And that means everything, from prep to the first look, the ceremony, the party bus, the reception and the sendoff. Some companies offer rehearsal dinner coverage, too, and love story videos. Experience is crucial, LaFleur and Ranney agree. A veteran knows the right equipment for the job and will have backups in place. “A wedding day is organic. During your consultation ask: » What format will the final video be? Will it be shareable online? » Will a highlights video be available for the reception or day-after brunch? » Will the video include audio? “Without audio, it’s just moving pictures,” LaFleur says. “Each videographer has a different way of capturing audio, so make sure you know what they do.”

» Has the videographer worked the ceremony and reception venue(s) before? If so, what recommendations do they have for getting the best results? » Who is responsible for getting the videography guidelines from the church or synagogue? WHAT YOU’LL GET If it’s a package, review what you’ll get for

is prepared to capture what you’ve said will happen as well as the unplanned moments,” LaFleur says. “Why chance it with someone who has never filmed a wedding?” WHEN YOUR CHOICE IS MADE » Verify that the videographer carries insurance. » Verify that the company is legitimate and don’t make a deposit until you have a signed agreement for all services you’ve discussed. » Review your timeline with your photographer and videographer ahead of your wedding day. Some elements may require special lighting, sound, positioning to get the best shots, etc. » Clue your videographer on any planned surprises for the ceremony, first look, reception or getaway. Your videographer and photographer should be the first — not the last — to know. Contributing source: “Mindy Weiss: The Wedding Book” with Lisbeth Levine weddingessentialsmagazine.com

TRENDS

BRIDAL, REIMAGINED When a traditional look just isn’t you STORY CHRIS CHRISTEN

Brides moving away from tradition will have no trouble shopping locally, judging from the alternative collections on the runway at The Aisle, a bridal showcase hosted by Wedding Essentials and produced by Omaha Fashion Week. The show at the Omaha Design Center, a prelude to OFW’s Fall 2019 season, was a non-conventional bride’s dream with two-piece dresses, jumpsuits, coat dresses and pant suits from a half-dozen local designers and boutiques representing independent designers.

Among the standouts: a luminous silver strapless column dress from Denise Ervin Designs; a vintage-inspired shimmery gold “Game of Thrones” dress by Kelli Bello of Spearmint Vintage at Noa Brides; bell sleeves and romantic lace from Livi’s Designs Bridal; and black — for shock and awe — from Hannah Caroline Couture and Ellynne Bridal, among others. Perhaps best of all in an age of inclusiveness: Silhouettes that celebrate a woman’s natural beauty, regardless of shape or size. KATHY RAE PHOTOGRAPHY

GOWN ALTERATIONS Fit is everything when it comes to a wedding dress. Here are seven key things to know about bridal alterations. STORY CHRIS CHRISTEN ADOBE STOCK

Plan to order your dress eight to 12 months in advance of your wedding and stay on schedule. “Having your dress in and waiting in alterations for a couple of months is always less stressful than waiting for the dress to arrive and cutting it short for alterations,” says Tracy Ponec of Rhylan Lang in the Old Market. If you’re planning a fall 2020 wedding, it’s not too early to begin dress shopping.

1

Be aware that seamstresses are extremely busy during prime wedding alterations season, April through October. As soon as you order your dress and have an approximate delivery date, it’s a good idea to reserve a spot on a seamstress’ calendar. Rhylan Lang makes in-salon alterations available to brides who subscribe to its VIP service. “When the dress arrives, we store it until it goes into alternations and never has to leave the store

2

until you pick it up a week before your wedding,” Ponec says.

74

FALL 2019

Budget for alterations. Most seamstresses who specialize in bridal gowns charge per service rather than a flat rate. Customizations beyond simply fitting the gown — adding lace or beading or reshaping the silhouette, for example — can add up quickly. “There’s no way to give you an average (cost) for alterations,” Ponec says. “There are too many variables from dress to dress.” Consulting with a seamstress or a knowledgeable dress consultant before you buy is one way to make sure a dress still falls within your budget after alterations.

3

If your bridal consultant recommends a custom measurement, opt for it. Some designers offer the option of a specified hem length. The customization, known as a hollow-to-hem measurement, involves a charge that’s often comparable to having the

4

dress altered by a seamstress, Ponec says. “If a custom measurement is beneficial to the bride, we’ll highly require it,” she says. That’s often the case with a petite figure, in order for the dress to be in proportion to her height and build.

Consider your fabric choice. The slinkier the fabric, the harder it will be to fix the fit if you gain or lose weight. A dress with all-over lace or a high-low hemline poses different alterations challenges and considerations. And added expense, if an alteration can be done in the first place.

5

Wear your wedding shoes for both your gown arrival appointment and your fitting. Opt for a hemline that grazes the ground so you can walk, dance and mingle comfortably, gracefully — and safely.

6

Bring your undergarments and accessories to the gown arrival appointment so you can see your overall look. Bring a friend, too. An extra set of eyes at your fitting is always a good idea. Choose someone who has a great sense of

7

style and an opinion you trust.
