STOP & SMELL THE ROSES It’s not every day that a wedding couple from Omaha makes world headlines. But that’s exactly what happened to Christine Green and Jon Miller. Assistant Editor Marjie Ducey wrote about the newlyweds’ wedding-day disaster for the Omaha WorldHerald (publisher of this magazine). When the story broke online, readers clicked and shared like crazy. Christine was trying to reduce expenses and thought it would be a neat touch to decorate her outdoor wedding with flowers from the couple’s 29-acre property near Lincoln. Little did she know that those lovely white blooms intended for her bouquet and centerpieces were toxic snow-on-the-mountain. The night before the wedding, she and her family made 40 table centerpieces, four flower crowns, four corsages, seven bouquets, 10 boutonnières and 10 large floral arrangements. When she washed her face the next morning after just a few hours of sleep, the sap residue that remained on her hands caused an allergic reaction. Her face turned red and bumpy and her swollen eyes felt like sandpaper. She barely made it through her wed-
ding ceremony and missed 3½ hours of her reception while at an emergency clinic. Their misfortune struck a chord across the world. “I didn’t think this story would leave Omaha. Not even for a quick second,” the bride told us after getting reports that she was a headline story in Italy, Turkey, Switzerland, New Zealand, Denmark, Mexico and the United Kingdom. The Sun in the UK called the day a “Blooming Nightmare.” It may have been, but the best part is what Christine realized amid the chaos: It’s not the dress and the arrangements and all the rest that makes the day. It’s the person you are marrying. “Focus on the big picture,’’ she’ll tell you. “It’s so hard to do that when you’re comparing your wedding to other people’s. You are simply getting married. We make it such a big deal for all the wrong reasons.’’ Christine and Jon’s Real Wedding has the loveliest ending, though, thanks to a photographer who did the sweetest thing (page 24). Best wishes to all couples as your own wedding story unfolds — but maybe without the chaos Christine and Jon encountered. Chris Christen editor in chief

ROCKING J IMAGING · SEPTEMBER 2, 2017 · PRIVATE ACREAGE & THE DURHAM MUSEUM
HIGH SCHOOL SWEETHEARTS The two first met when Christine was a freshman in high school, and dating one of Jon’s friends. Later, Jon asked Christine out and they hit it off. In December 2016 he proposed, surprising her on what she thought was a girls' night out at the Upstream Brewing Company. Instead, she was greeted by her sister with a rose. She walked around downtown collecting flowers from family members while her sister followed taking pictures. “He was waiting at an archway on 13th and Farnam,’’ Christine said. “My brother-in-law had his phone on FaceTime so my oldest sister could be there too, which was the sweetest.’’ DREAM WEDDING Christine had thought about her wedding since she was young, talking about it with her older sisters and expecting it to be the most beautiful and perfect day of her life. Christine and Jon planned a day with a rustic-but-classy feel. Christine wanted a lot of gold and tons of greenery. FLOWER DISASTER Christine had been telling her family how beautiful the wildflowers were on the 29 acres the couple had purchased, and so they decided it would be special to use them for the wedding. They picked a truckload and Christine, her mom and sisters designed the arrangements. Then disaster struck. Christine had a severe allergic reaction to the wildflower mix. “It wasn’t funny at the time, but I crack up now,’’ she says. “I couldn’t look at my husband while we were saying our vows ...When I tried, my eyes burned so badly ... I started to black out. So I looked down, but then my eyes and nose were pouring out water.’’ The situation was so crazy, they forgot her shoes, the wedding rings and items for the unity portion of the ceremony. A trip to the emergency room
caused her to miss their party bus and the first 3½ hours of their reception – including dinner. CHERISHED MOMENTS Christine said it was so sweet when she and her sisters realized that things were only getting worse. “We were holding hands walking up to the house, and I went totally blind. My eyes were swollen shut. My sister sat me down and was praying over me while my brother was telling me that I still looked beautiful and tried to make me wear his sunglasses,’’ she recalls. “It was the calmest part of my wedding day.’’ She also loved how photographer Jenny Wiese reacted to the situation, insisting on a redo day for photos. DJ Elliott Harris kept everyone updated. “I cried all day over the kind gestures.’’ PERFECT GROOM Christine can’t say enough about Jon’s response to the situation. He whisked her straight from the altar to the nearest emergency room, only to decide that it was too busy, so they headed for another one. MRS. MILLER An engraved Bible from the bride’s grandparents was a favorite present. “It was the first time I saw ‘Christine Miller’ on anything. It was most special coming from my nana and papa because they are the main glue to our big, loud, crazy family who helped make my wedding day as bearable as possible.’’ IT’S NOT THE DRESS “Getting through this crazy wedding day in the eyes of 300-plus people really showed us what we’re capable of and how we will handle trials and tribulations in the future.’’ Christine also couldn’t thank her family enough for the help they gave her. “If I could’ve actually seen what it all looked like, I know I would have been in absolute awe,’’ she says, “but I'm still in more awe of how much they did for me all for a wedding.’’ weddingessentialsmagazine.com 25

The absolute best in gown care.
A DV I C E
ALTERATIONS DONE RIGHT T E X T CHRIS CHRISTEN
The perfect gown is almost never the perfect fit. Every dress needs a little tweaking, but some styles are more easily altered than others. For most brides, alterations will be necessary. Omaha fashion designer and stylist Mary Anne Vaccaro shares her advice:
USE A PRO Entrust your alterations to an experienced seamstress. If you consider someone outside of a bridal salon, ask for references and photos, and visit the seamstress’ workroom before you commit.
SCHEDULE YOUR FITTINGS Plan to buy your gown 10 months before your wedding, knowing that some gowns can take five months for delivery. It’s common to have two and sometimes three fittings, depending on the seamstress and the work to be done. The first fitting typically is scheduled about two months before the wedding, with the final fitting about two weeks prior to the wedding.
SHOP FOR FIT NOT SIZE Sizing is inconsistent in bridal, and gowns tend to run small. If you normally wear a size 6 dress, your perfect fit might be in a size 8 or 10 gown. Never buy a gown that’s too small, thinking you’ll lose weight. Likewise, resist buying a gown that’s more than one size larger than you need. The seamstress can’t just take it in. “You have to take apart the entire dress and cut it down to size."

INVEST IN THE PROPER UNDERGARMENTS
Arrive with the shoes you plan to wear on your wedding day or at least a proxy pair with a similar heel height. Vaccaro recommends a hemline that gently grazes the ground. This way, you’ll be able to walk, dance and mingle without tripping over your dress.
RELISH THE MOMENT Have your hair and makeup done for your final fitting to give your wedding-day look a trial run. “Looking pretty will also help you see yourself as you will be seen on your wedding day,” Vaccaro says.

BOHAC PHOTOGRAPHY · AUGUST 12, 2017 · ROCA BERRY FARM
HE’S THE ONE They met on the first day of high school and played Tic-Tac-Toe every day in study hall. Lance wanted to put his name in her phone under “My amazing BF,’’ he says, because he would be that, soon. They had been dating for 5½ years when Lance proposed. BEACH BABIES They’re obsessed with beaches, so it was only fitting that they would get engaged on one. Lance surprised Jalynn during a trip to Cabo San Lucas as a belated 21st birthday present. After a perfect beach proposal (despite the blowing wind), they returned to their room, where Lance had left a trail of rose petals. On the bed was a large heart made of roses, along with chocolate-covered strawberries and champagne. In his bag, he had a personalized coffee mug purchased on Etsy (Jalynn’s obsession) and a notebook filled with personal entries made in the months leading up to the proposal. “I was absolutely blown away by how much planning Lance did to make that night incredibly special,’’ Jalynn said. She returned the gesture on their wedding day with her own journal (three total) chronicling what they did each day leading up to the wedding and why she loved him. Lance kept monthly notes. “Words cannot describe what these notes mean to us,” the bride said of their journals. “We will forever cherish them.’’ MOSTLY ELEGANT They planned a romantic floral-themed wedding. At the reception, the maid of honor and best man surprised guests by entering the room dressed as Harry Dunne and
Lloyd Christmas from the newlyweds’ favorite movie, “Dumb and Dumber.” “Everyone loved it,’’ Jalynn says. PICTURE PERFECT Jalynn’s favorite decor element was an upholstered love seat for the head table. Her father was assigned to transport it to the venue, but didn’t realize it had fallen out of his truck while en route. Lance’s mother spotted it along the highway. “The poor love seat had a few scratches and tears on the back but still photographed beautifully,’’ Jalynn says. TRAVEL ROUTE Instead of table numbers, guests found their seats by travel destinations represented in table signage handpainted by the bride’s makeup artist. Each sign reflected a place the couple had visited or plans to visit. The guestbook was a gold map personalized with a travel quote and the newlyweds’ last name. “I surprised Lance with a suitcase groom’s cake and, of course, we displayed hundreds of pictures of our adventures together,’’ Jalynn says. Her favorite gift was a personalized sign from their wedding decorator. PUT A RING ON IT He says Jalynn is beautiful, witty and caring. She can’t resist his infectious smile. She’s discovered cooking and loves seeing that ring on his finger. Her wedding-day advice: “Enjoy every moment, big and small. There are things that will not go completely as planned. However, at the end of the day, one thing matters most. You just married the person you want to spend forever with. Nothing in the world compares to that feeling, that realization.’’

THERE ARE SO MANY DETAILS involved in planning a wedding that it’s easy to overlook a few. Although it’s best to get things done well in advance, that often doesn’t happen, observes Amy Schwartz, event consultant with Complete weddings + events. “All of these details are important to get done ASAP (one month out at the latest), but most couples don't think of them until the week of,’’ she says. So, spare yourself some last-minute anxiety and make sure these elements are on your checklist ahead of your wedding week.

JALYNN VUKONICH WENT STRAIGHT FOR gold glitter Gianni Bini sneakers for her wedding. “They were just so me,’’ she says. “Not to mention, they were unbelievably comfortable and flat-out adorable. SHOE SELECTION TIPS • ALL-DAY WEAR The dress will be altered to your shoe height. If you change into a lower heel shoe for the reception, your dress will be too long. • COMFORT TEST You’re going to be on your feet for hours. Break your wedding shoes in by testing them out for a whole day at home. • PERFECT MATCH No dress is truly white, so finding an exact match can be tricky. Robertshaw suggests

eyeing at David’s Bridal would be perfect. Her bridesmaids wore the same style, and Nekola is happy to report she didn’t notice her feet all day. Nekola and Vukonich were lucky. Most brides pick out several pairs before they find the perfect shoe. Hannah Nodskov took photos of high heels at various stores before realizing they were all the same style. She wore a
flat version for the reception. Jocelyn Robertshaw, owner of Ready or Knot {Wedding Chic}, said most brides-to-be arrive for their fittings with two or three different styles of shoes. That’s not a bad thing. You need to see how a shoe looks with your dress before you commit, she says. Here are tips for choosing the perfect fit and style for your wedding day.
going with a shoe that's blue, blush pink, silver or gold. Incorporate your wedding color or some sparkle. • MORE THAN ONE OCCASION Purchase a pair that will also look great for a holiday party or a date night to celebrate your anniversary. • OUTSIDE OPTIONS If you are getting married outdoors, consider wedges for ease of walking. For any bride, a thicker heel will stand up better than a stiletto. • PICTURE PERFECT So you
bought beautiful heels but they are too uncomfortable to wear. Don’t despair. Don that gorgeous pair for your pictures, then swap them out. • TOO MUCH BLING Be careful of beading or jewels on the top of your shoes. BRETT BROONER PHOTOGRAPHY · OCTOBER 21, 2017 · OMAHA DESIGN CENTER
PERFECT MOMENT They met at a charity wine tasting, and two years later Skip proposed at Katy’s favorite place — her parents' lake home in Wisconsin. “He spelled out ‘Will you marry me’ in beautiful lights on the beach, and he asked me to be his wife on a big deck overlooking the lights and the water,’’ Katy says. She had no idea he’d flown up to ask her dad for her hand a month earlier. WEDDING SINGER Their wedding theme was classic, with unexpected twists that were elegant, chic and romantic. One of those twists came when the band called Skip on stage to perform his favorite karaoke song, “Word Up.” Everyone flocked to watch him perform, and Katy says it was hilarious. “I may have been the one on stage, but she stole the show,’’ Skip says. “She was absolutely breathtaking.’’ MOVING MOMENTS Skip’s parents passed away in June 2016. “His sister thoughtfully recorded a message from his dad to me before he died, welcoming me to the family and giving his blessing for our union,’’ Katy said. “I had just finished getting my makeup done, and I totally lost it crying. Later, after our first look in Elmwood Park, Skip’s siblings played him a message from his dad, and that was another very moving part of the day.’’ LOCAL FLAVOR Katy’s family isn’t from Nebraska, and guests loved the latenight mini runzas from a food truck. “It was fun for them to try a quirky, local favorite.’’ They served DQ shakes in vintage milk bottles as a late-night snack, a nod to the family business. “My great-grandfather opened the first DQ in Minnesota and
the seventh in the world, and it’s still in our family 70 years later,’’ Katy said. ATTENTION TO DETAIL Katy said her best advice is to hire a planner or day-of coordinator. “I am super type A, and was only able to relax and enjoy the wedding because I knew all the little details were being taken care of. Ultimately, it is your day, and it should be a reflection of you as a couple.’’ They skipped traditions like the garter and bouquet tosses, and having the wedding party dance into the reception. Skip said the wedding was perfect. “I know it wouldn’t have been that way without her.’’ WINE ANYONE? Friends surprised them with gift subscriptions for Malbec, the wine they were drinking the night they met, and a year's worth of fresh citrus. “I love to cook, so am looking forward to both. Neither was on our registry, so I loved being surprised with such thoughtfulness,’’ the bride says. SPECIAL TOUCHES The escort display was custom made, with leaves dipped in rose gold. The couple commissioned local artist Julia Mason to create their guest book — a watercolor painting depicting special spots in the couple's love story, along with iconic local scenes. Guests signed the matting, and the artwork is now framed in their home. In another special touch, the couple served Abita beer from Louisiana and fresh fried beignets at their rehearsal dinner. PERFECT MATCH Katy says she never knew what people meant about ending up with your best friend. “Now, I get it. He is truly my favorite person, and he kept me sane through our wedding planning process.’’

HONORED GUESTS WAYS TO CELEBRATE THAT SPECIAL GRANDPARENT CONNECTION T E X T MARJIE DUCEY
IT WAS ONE OF EVENT PLANNER JEN MRSNY’S FAVORITE GRANDPARENT MOMENTS. At a recent wedding, the grandfather of the bride was known as the sexiest grandpa ever. During the reception, the family put a chair in the middle of the dance floor and all of the grandkids danced around him to Right Said Fred’s song, “I’m Too Sexy.” At one point he held up his cane, a guest grabbed the end and the grandkids did the Limbo. “Watching him dance around and have so much fun with his grandchildren was priceless,’’ says Mrsny, from Cherry On Top Events by Jen. There are many ways to honor or remember your grandparents on your wedding day. Bride Katelynn Nekola was especially close with her grandfather Dominic. The night before her

wedding, two of her bridesmaids decorated her hotel room and included a canvas print of Katelynn and her grandpa. “It brought back so many memories and made his presence on my wedding day that much closer,’’ she says. OTHER IDEAS TO HONOR YOUR GRANDPARENTS • SAVE A SEAT. Leave empty seats

at the ceremony with a single floral stem on each. SPECIAL TABLE. Stage a memorial table at the reception with pictures and a candle. FLOWERS. Give corsages and boutonnières to attending grandparents to signify their importance. SAY A PRAYER. Ask your grandparents to offer a prayer before dinner or to be part of the ceremony. CHARMS. Add photo charms of your grandparents to the bouquet.
• SOMETHING BORROWED.
Incorporate something old or something new. Katy Joyce’s maternal grandmother gifted her a beautiful gold necklace with a J to wrap around the bouquet. The bride also wore silver heart earrings from her paternal grandmother, which all her aunts had worn in their weddings, too. • INCLUDE THEM. Ask your grandmother to be your flower girl or grandpa to act as ring bearer. They could also be a bridesmaid or groomsman. • PICK A MEANINGFUL DATE.
Plan your wedding close to your grandparents’ anniversary. • BEAUTY TREATMENT. Make sure your grandmothers look as amazing as the rest of the bridal party. As a special touch, invite them to join in the fun of getting ready the morning of the wedding and have their hair and makeup done with the group.

LOCK ON HER HEART The couple met online and decided to have their first date at Pitch Pizzeria after meeting at Michael’s apartment. As they were leaving to go eat, the lock broke on his front door. Instead of canceling the date, Taylor stuck around until the lock was fixed. They ended up staying in and ordering pizza from Dante’s Pizzeria. “He was incredibly frazzled,” she recalls. “But now he tells me, ‘I’m so happy my lock broke and that you decided to stay.’ ’’ FAMILY HEIRLOOM Taylor was thrilled when Michael’s grandmother gifted them a diamond to be used in Taylor’s ring. She couldn’t wait to slip it on her finger. “He let me take it out of the box in the gift-wrapping area at Borsheims. We drove straight to Mark’s (restaurant in Dundee), crying” over the excitement of officially being engaged, she says. ICELAND OR BUST Since high school, Taylor had wanted Iceland to be one of her first travel adventures. An Internet search led her to a woman who makes a living planning and photographing adventure weddings. The couple were married on the edge of a cliff overlooking Thjofafoss (Thief) Waterfall. “The wind was so strong and so cold coming off the river,” the bride recalls. “We were both completely numb and my hair was a mess, but it was a really beautiful day.’’ YOU LIGHT UP MY LIFE The couple hadn’t expected to see the Northern Lights, but the forecast changed late in the day. “As soon as we finished dinner, we ran outside for photos. The Northern Lights were dancing in the sky. It was truly a magical ending
to an incredible day.’’ NATURAL WOMAN For their Omaha reception, they used locally grown flowers and served a Scandinavian-inspired menu prepared with local ingredients. For their wedding favors, friend Gary Nachman made a special batch of wedding mead with fresh honey and blackberries. A birch and eucalyptus chandelier for the reception tent took some effort to hang, but Taylor says it was worth it. CAKE CUTTING 101 They got ready to cut the cake and realized they didn’t know how. Chef Evan Brockman offered pointers. “There are quite a few photos of me cutting into the cake and then not knowing what to do with the knife,” the bride says. “It was a very funny moment.’’ SPECIAL TOUCHES Friend Erin Bragg, a theater costume designer, used components from two ready-made dresses to create one custom design for Taylor. Michael’s tie was made with scraps from Taylor’s dress. DRAMATIC MOMENT During the reception, it started to storm and the power went out. “My friend and DJ, Joshua Mullady, was super flexible and moved all of his equipment inside to keep the party going,’’ Taylor says. “It was kind of a natural ending to the evening and allowed people the opportunity to leave. Those who stayed danced and sang karaoke. It was a lot of fun.’’ JUST THE TWO OF US The ceremony was private and intimate. “Our reception would be for everyone else,’’ Taylor says. “We wanted incredible food, drinks and atmosphere. Our focus was entirely on family and friends who really wanted to celebrate with us.’’

TAYLOR WINTLE PHOTOGRAPHY · JULY 15, 2017 · ST. JOHN VIANNEY CATHOLIC CHURCH
HIGH SCHOOL SWEETHEARTS The two met at a bonfire after Katelynn transferred to Ralston High School. A few days later at school, he wanted to know if she remembered him, and three weeks later he asked her to be his girlfriend. “As the years went by our love for each other grew stronger and stronger,’’ Katelynn says. PUPPY LOVE Jeffrey took Katelynn to Spezia’s to celebrate her new job. As they were driving home, he asked if she was ready for her next surprise. He turned into the Holiday Inn. “He led me to our room and as he opened the door there came our three dogs. Penelope was in a wedding dress, Harley in a flower girl dress and Chewy in a tux. There were rose petals all over, and candles and my mom and aunt were there. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing; the moment I had dreamt about since I was a little girl was about to happen. The man of my dreams was about to get down on one knee and ask me to marry him.’’ HER OWN VISION Katelynn always imagined having a modern DIY wedding. “Our venue helped us with our vision,’’ she says. “St. John Vianney has a gorgeous hall that is very modern.’’ DETOUR Only half of her flowers showed up as scheduled. After a day of tracking, the balance of the shipment was located in Miami. “Thankfully, they showed up early Friday morning and we were able to use almost all of the flowers to complete our arrangements,’’ she says. “We saved money,
and it was a good bonding experience for the bridesmaids and family.” RAINBOW HUES Katelynn put her bridesmaids in different-colored dresses. It gave her wedding party a unique but gorgeous look. FIRST GLANCE “The sweetest moment of our wedding day would be the moment we first saw each other as I walked down the aisle. We were both overwhelmed with happiness and excitement.’’ JUST LIKE THE REAL THING One of the groomsmen, Kevin Bacon, danced to “Footloose.” “Everyone got into a big circle around him, and he did not let the real Kevin Bacon down,’’ Katelynn says. MEMORIES “I was very close with my grandfather. One of my former co-workers knew how much my grandpa meant to me. She gifted us a wind chime, and every time it chimes I know that my grandpa is there with us.’’ QUIET MOMENT Their photographer suggested taking photos as the sun was setting. It gave the couple a moment to themselves. “I highly recommend this,’’ Katelynn says. ENJOY IT ALL Jeffrey says Katelynn is optimistic, gives great advice and has a sense of humor. She says Jeff is always the first to lend a helping hand and knows how to put a smile on her face. Katelynn reminds couples that no matter what happens, it all seems to work out. “It’s a day you will never forget ... Enjoy every moment because the day goes by so fast.’’

PEOPLE ADORE YOUR dinner parties, and the nights out that you plan for friends are remembered months later. But what happens when your guest list jumps from 10 to 100 or more for your wedding? There are lots of things to consider when you’re planning the reception part of your big day, says Amy Schwartz, event consultant for Complete weddings + events. Topping her list for couples: venue, caterer and entertainment. Here, Schwartz and Jen Mrsny of Cherry On Top Events by Jen share tips for eight important considerations.
94
WINTER 2018 weddingessentialsmagazine.com
DATES It’s definitely not as simple as calling for a dinner reservation. You need to think ahead and avoid dates that are in high demand. Think Berkshire Hathaway shareholders weekend, the College World Series and Husker football games. Costs can triple and rooms disappear because of high demand. “If you’re a Husker diehard, you’ll find that the Husker bye week is one of the most popular dates. Vendors book a lot faster on these popular dates/weekends,’’ Mrsny says. VENUE Think about venue capacity and layout, along with your guest list. If your venue will hold 250 people and your guest list is at 450, then you’ll have to choose another venue or make some difficult cuts. Just because a venue will hold 250 guests doesn’t mean you should pack them in like sardines. PARKING When choosing a venue, don’t overlook parking, or it could be a tough night for your guests. Is there a parking lot, shuttle service, street parking, valet service? “Definitely something to keep in mind,’’ Mrsny says. AMBIENCE Once you have the venue, determine how you want it to look and what it will take to achieve your vision. A board room layout won’t work for a reception, but it may work for an intimate catered rehearsal dinner. CATERING Talk over what you’d like to serve. That might entail visits to various vendors, so don’t leave the menu until the last minute.

BUDGET Create a list of wants and a list of needs. You might find that some things on your wants list aren’t as important once you start adding up the costs, Schwartz says. SURPRISE GUESTS Since getting guests to RSVP is a challenge for everyone, Mrsny recommends having a “ghost table” when capacity allows. “A ‘ghost table’ is essentially an extra table that no one is meant to sit at,’’ Mrsny says. “However, if a rogue guest shows or you completely spaced Aunt Betty’s table assignment, a seat will be ready.’’ DAY-OF COORDINATOR This was a big one for Schwartz. “I was able to enjoy my wedding day, and she (the coordinator) kept my mom sane,’’ she says. “She basically covered all our bases, taking care of details and communicating with other vendors and making sure they all showed up.’’

RANDY EDWARDS PHOTOGRAPHY · SEPTEMBER 16, 2017 · THE LIVING ROOM
HOMEWORK HELP The two met at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Paul was an economics major and spotted Hannah working on economics homework. “He asked if I needed any help. While I didn’t, we got to talking. We went on a nine-hour first date in the Old Market a few days later and began dating the next day. PERFECT ENDING Paul proposed on the deck of the lodge at Mahoney State Park near Ashland after a marathon day visiting their favorite places. “I had a feeling it was going to happen that day, but he kept me on my feet guessing when and where,’’ she says. INDUSTRIAL BLING Hannah said they let their venue speak for itself in terms of industrial features, including brick walls, concrete floors, metal accents and wooden beams. They brought in accents of rhinestones, silver and romantic flowers. KEEP THEM LAUGHING They wrote their own vows and worked in lots of humor. Hannah said the speech by best man Morgan Runice was filled with funny anecdotes, too. Their last name is a little tricky to say, and the officiant used the wrong pronunciation when he introduced them as husband and wife. “He’s a family friend, and we laughed it off.’’ MORE THAN ONE It was hard for Hannah to pick the sweetest moment of the day. “It’s a tie between our first look (our photographer and videographer captured the whole moment, including our nervous giggles, perfectly) and saying our vows,’’ she says. LET’S DANCE They had an ’80s prom theme for the reception and took song requests on their RSVPs. All but six parties returned them.
“Everyone likes ’80s music,’’ Hannah says. Cupcakes instead of a cake let them cater to everyone’s tastes. “We had an unconventional guestbook in a large framed canvas so we could display it on our wall instead of storing it away.’’ BUSY BEE Hannah owns Hannah Caroline Couture and made all the wedding attire, including both of her bridal gowns; ceremony and reception dresses for the bridesmaids, junior bridesmaid, both mothers, and both grandmothers; and bow ties for the groomsmen. It took her eight hours to make her main gown, three for her reception dress and three to four hours for each additional outfit. She also designed all the graphics, from the welcome sign to the save-the-date, program and other signage. ON TASK Hannah used a project/task management app called Trello, which allowed her to add tasks with due dates, attachments, collaborators (her mom and matron of honor) and checklists within tasks. Her tip: “Hire, at the very least, a day-of coordinator,’’ she says. “Amanda at AB Weddings helped me think of some things I hadn’t thought of and took care of all the set-up, tear-down and day-of details so we didn’t have to worry about things.’’ FUN TIMES Hannah says Paul is hilarious, caring, romantic and smart and has helped her come out of her shell. Paul says she’s intelligent, funny and beautiful and never fails to make him laugh. “We both have been surprised at how often we still get butterflies from simple moments despite being together for almost four years,’’ Hannah says. “And we hope that’s something that never changes.’’
