Welcome Dear Gretna Community,
O

We are proud to have a continued partnership with the Gretna Public Library, making www.GretnaEvents.com a reality. Simplifying event sharing for both our members and the community continues to be a long-term goal for our chamber. If you haven’t checked it out, please take a minute and see what’s happening around town. You can even sync your calendar with it, so you never miss an event! Our 2020 goal is to help our community, and our membership, be involved. We strive every day to create meaningful opportunities to connect you with one another. From the Gretna Life Community Expo to the Annual Banquet, we hope to see you enjoying our community, because we truly believe we live Gretna - The Great Life, #GretnaLife.
n behalf of the Gretna Area Chamber of Commerce and its members, I would like to thank you for picking up a copy of this year’s Green Book and calling on our local businesses year after year. One of the biggest reasons Gretna continues to grow and thrive is because we are a community. Thank you to everyone who shops small and local throughout the year. I would like to give a personal welcome to our new board members: Aakash Bhoja (Gretna Wine & Spirits), Grant Pille (Pinnacle Bank), Shannan Slobodnik (Thirsty’s Pub), and Nate Olsen (Olsen Photography). In addition, we welcome back Margi Clark (SuperCuts), Mary Belfiore (Midlands Dental Group), Doug Ortlieb (Kingdom Insurance Group) and Thom Hazell (Anchor Roofing). These are faces and names you probably already know — new and old business owners alike — jumping in to share their experience and insight with us for the next 3-6 years. I would also like to say a special thank you to our outgoing board members: Kevin Burns (F&M Bank) and Theresa Gulizia (Edwards Jones - Lori Blum). I cannot count the number of volunteer hours these individuals have put into making our chamber, and our community, what it is today. We are looking forward to a great 2020. We have already added several new members to the Gretna Chamber and are welcoming back many

Chamber History
Chamber grew from a need to promote local businesses
I
national Chambers of Commerce. In the early years they tried many promotions to attract customers — everything from giving away turkeys during the holidays to distributing Gretna Bucks to encourage residents to shop locally. In the early 1990s when the chamber had grown to more than 100 members, Chamber President Emil Beyer led a plan to change the name to the Gretna Area Chamber of Commerce. The name change was voted on, made official, and the Gretna Area Chamber of Commerce was established. Today, the chamber has more than 250 members. The chamber still publishes a printed directory and now maintains a website with direct contact information for owners of local businesses. The chamber is active in community affairs and in recruiting new businesses to the city, as well as promoting existing members. This is augmented by local advertising and ribbon cuttings to promote businesses new and old. Yet this is by no means the final chapter. As Gretna continues to grow and more businesses invest in the area, the chamber will continue to adapt and change to the needs of one of Nebraska’s most vital and growing communities.
n the “old days,” Gretna business owners would convene at certain locations around town to discuss everything from taxes to business. In 1984 some local business owners, including Dan Washburn, Mike Wohlers, Joe Piccolo, Jack Koke, Don and Ed Frederick and Web Warren, decided a new direction was needed. They were looking for a way to increase their market share from the local population and resolved to come up with ways to convince people that they could provide the same goods and services at the same price that they could find in the “big city” but with less hassle and smaller crowds. At that time, Dan Washburn was a member of the Ashland Chamber of Commerce and was aware of its annual directory of member names and phone numbers so the public would have easy access to the information. He presented this idea to the group, and it was decided to approach other local businesses about participation. By joining the group for $25 per year, local businesses could get their name and phone number in a simple directory that was distributed to residents in the 68028 ZIP code. The group chose the name Gretna Area Business Association to avoid fees with the state and

Gretna History
Gretna Main Street in the 1920s — looking south from McKenna Avenue and Wallace Street.
G
retna got its start as Forest City, a settlement near the confluence of the Elkhorn and Platte Rivers. Irish immigrants built dugouts and log cabins near the settlement, which was incorporated in 1858. Forest City’s growth stalled when the Burlington Railroad route to Ashland didn’t go through the town. Gradually residents began relocating nearer the railroad right-of-way to create a new town. The new city’s name of Gretna came from Gretna Green in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, home to some of the Scottish settlers of the town. The Lincoln Land Company purchased a deed in April 1886, and by August a plat survey was completed and recorded. Forest City dwindled; the only remaining trace of the community is the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery at 231st Street and Schram Road.

2020 vision
retna saw major improvements implemented in 2019 with no signs of stopping in the next few years. A total of 10 subdivisions received final platting approval in 2019, with proposed apartments expected to receive approval in 2020. Two of Gretna’s major roadways were repaved in 2019. Construction on both 204th and 216th Streets has improved driving and safety, said Mayor Jim Timmerman. Temporary traffic lights have been installed at Highway 6 and Lincoln Road, with plans for permanent fixtures this summer. The streets department is also seeking additional four-way stops in high-traffic areas along with other traffic-calming equipment. These improvements preceded

plans to develop the Gretna Crossing Park area, which is expected to eventually house disc golf, a fishing pond, a dog park, an aquatics and recreation facility and more. “The city and school district are working together to build a joint aquatic and recreation center, in order to replace a 50-year-old city swimming pool while providing a location for the school swimming team,” Timmerman said. Street and sidewalk improvements will accompany new lighting along McKenna Avenue’s downtown corridor in 2020. Mirroring the city’s growth, Gretna Public Schools is thriving. With enrollment at an all-time high, Superintendent Rich Beran said that doing what is best for students remains the daily focus 16
in Gretna classrooms. “The biggest success continues to be the academic growth of our students,” Beran said. “Besides the outstanding students we work with, the key ingredient to that growth is the dedication and hard work of our staff and parents. Above all else, we are very fortunate to have a staff that keeps the focus on what is best for the children.” The district’s sixth elementary school is under construction, as is a bus barn addition and a high school stadium. Construction will not slow in 2020, with plans underway for a seventh elementary school, tennis court addition, Gretna Middle School and Gretna High School parking lot improvements, as well as continued technology continued on Page 17
About Gretna / 2019 Chamber Awards improvements. On trend with the city and school district, the Gretna Public Library also continued to improve. In 2019, the library received accreditation from the Nebraska Library Commission at the highest level offered: Gold. The news followed a successful summer of programming for children, teenagers and adults. As in years past, the Gretna Public Library Foundation continued to raise funds for a modern library and community center. Outdated staff computers at the main library were replaced, laying the groundwork for a larger technology update. “In 2020, the staff computers at the children’s library will be updated and the patron computers at the main library will be refreshed,” Reed said. “Additionally, the equipment that corresponds with those updates will be replaced with proper infrastructure to support the much needed advancements. In 2021, an update to all our patron computers will hopefully be taking place, which will be the final phase for this portion of the project.”

About Gretna
Museum to celebrate GVFD, community legacy
G
retna history buffs, rejoice. Community members will soon have a museum focused on preserving the legacy of Gretna and its fire department. The idea originated and snowballed through the work of Dave Harrig, longtime Gretna resident who volunteers at the Gretna Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department and Gretna American Legion Post 216. “From day one history appealed to me,” said Harrig, citing his interest in history to the competitive atmosphere in his high school classroom and his 30 years in aviation in the United States Air Force. “You want to remember the good and not forget the bad,” Harrig said. “There’s the old adage that history repeats itself. “You can look at anything and wonder why things are the way they are, or you can learn about it.” Stumbling upon interesting items and stories while working at the fire station fueled Harrig’s desired to do something more to share them. “The fire service is built with tradition and some of the most incredible history there is,” he said. “Like the military, these are all extremely dedicated people. They all have their own stories to tell and they all partake in this mutual goal that makes history daily.”

A rendering of the proposed museum.
The museum — to be located at the old garage on Angus Road, situated between the apartment building and St. Patrick Catholic Church — is expected to house many interactive displays for children. “We want the kids to be very involved,” Harrig said. “Statistically, when a community has a strong fire prevention program, they’re 85% less likely to have a fire started by a child.” Along with using the museum as a teaching resource for children, the idea is to create a space that allows community members to participate in and celebrate their history. “It’s about getting this stuff out there, rather than having all the history sitting in boxes in a dark room,” Harrig said. “To me, it’s very

The Gretna City Council approved a resolution that designates all city recreational areas, parks, playgrounds and athletic fields to be tobacco-free and also directs the posting of tobacco-free signs.
important to keep that history alive.” Donations from the GVFD and American Legion, including tools and equipment, have already been received by the museum, which will also feature a classroom/meeting area. The current building will be added on to, with the intent to make it look as much like an old fire station as possible. That look will fit in with what’s inside, as well as the surrounding neighborhood in the older part of Gretna. “I just want the community to know it’s the community’s museum,” Harrig said. “It’s not about me building a legacy for me. It’s about showcasing the legacy of Gretna and the volunteer firefighters from the time of its inception to now.”
The designation came as a recommendation by the city’s Park Advisory Committee, which worked closely with T.E.A.M. on the project. City Administrator Jeff Kooistra said the initiative had been on the city’s list of goals for 2020. “It’s really keeping in mind the healthy lifestyle and what effects tobacco has on us and on the environment,”
19
said Lauren Liebentritt, chair of the city’s Park Advisory Committee. “We’re really trying to create a healthy lifestyle and promote that within our parks. “When you think of a park you think of getting active or going out and relaxing. If you have an unhealthy environment, that’s not really something you can do.” The city will post about 20 signs at the entrances of Gretna’s eight parks.

Schools Gretna Public Schools School District No. 37 was created as a small district to serve the village of Gretna in 1888. The first school was located across the road from LaBorde Cemetery outside Gretna. A two-story brick schoolhouse was constructed in 1898 south of Angus Street across from St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Its size was doubled in 1908, and a gymnasium was added in 1936. As the village grew, so too did the school district. Through minor consolidation over the years and a major consolidation in 1958, the district has grown to its present size of more than 70 square miles. — Gretna Public Schools Administrative Offices 11717 S. 216th St. 402-332-3265 Gretna High School 11335 S. 204th St. 402-332-3936 Aspen Creek Middle School 18414 Summit Drive 402-332-3866 Gretna Middle School 11705 S. 216th St. 402-332-3048 Aspen Creek Elementary 10325 S. 188th St. 402-332-5617 Gretna Elementary 801 South St. 402-332-3341 Palisades Elementary 16820 Chutney Drive 402-895-2194 Squire John Thomas Elementary 11221 Northridge Drive 402-332-5578 Whitetail Creek Elementary 19110 Greenleaf Street 402-895-3388 Bus Barn 21710 Schram Road 402-332-3040

Justin Nicholas gets in a practice round before the Gretna High School Esports team competes against Broken Bow High School.
Esports team kicks off inaugural season at GHS
O
n many afternoons in one Gretna High School classroom, students gather after school to
game. New this year, the GHS Esports team is stepping up to the plate and often crushing the competition in a relatively new sport that involves video games. The idea originated when computer science teacher Kimberly IngrahamBeck and a student attended a conference at which one session was focused on getting Esports started in schools nationwide. The pair talked with coaches and set a plan in motion, hosting an information meeting at the school that drew much interest. “As a team in its first year, we’re competing really, really well,” said Cuahtemoc Hernandez, a junior Esports player at GHS. Students compete both locally and nationally through the Nebraska Schools Esports Association and the North America Scholastic Esports Federation. All grade levels at Gretna High School are welcome to join the
team, which currently has about six main competitors and a number of substitutes. “They’re doing amazing,” IngrahamBeck said. “I’m most proud of how they’ve been able to work together as a team. We’ve got kids from different grades and different walks of life. They weren’t all friends when they started but watching them come together and learn to work as a team has been really amazing.” Greater opportunity can be explored as students prepare for the future, as some colleges like Bellevue University and Midland University have begun offering partial and full-ride scholarships to play on their Esports teams. Some colleges are offering Esports-related majors as well. Courses are being offered in things like shoutcasting — essentially commentating on games — video production and even Esports coaching. “I’d love to see more area schools getting on board,” Ingraham-Beck said. 23

T
he Gretna Public Library held a three-week chess class for children. Those in attendance learned how different pieces move across the board and the meaning of checkmate. They also got an introduction to algebraic notation, the standard for recording chess game moves. Children’s Librarian Jennifer Lockwood introduced the program at the request of some parents. She said a monthly meeting may be added to the library calendar, if enough interest is shown. The lessons were led by Jerome Helm, a chess expert from Omaha. Helm has been playing chess for 20 years. After about 10 years of casual play, Helm became more serious about chess tournaments and principles. “I was very motivated by the new people chess allowed me to meet and the sharpness I noticed chess’ impact had on my focus,” he said. “Also, there’s a national and worldwide rating system that showed me I can take this game as far as I want; there’s no limit.” www.GretnaChamber.com

rees don’t recognize and impose boundaries like city limits, fences, park designations and other manmade boundaries. Tree roots extend two to four times a tree’s canopy within the soil and the canopy spread can cover a vast ground area including your property and your neighbor’s. With the expansion of our Gretna neighborhood developments, your Gretna Arbor Society is striving to make tree care an important community priority. 2019 was a great tree-planting year for Gretna: • Last spring 21 individuals came out to plant 31 trees in Founders Park behind City Hall. Funding for the tree planting came from the NRD. • Last fall 28 individuals planted 19 trees in Leo Royal Park. • In September the “Tree Planting Workshop & Tree Give Away” taught proper tree planting and care. Then 80 deciduous trees, started from seed at Great Plains Nursery in Weston, Nebraska, were given out. Also a special youth raffle was held for four apple trees. • The Gretna Arbor Society assisted the City of Gretna in acquiring 41 deciduous trees for Plum Creek Park and The Fields at Gretna. • A Relict Bur Oak was presented to retiring Gretna Superintendent Dr. Kevin Riley during the Gretna Arbor Day Celebration at Thomas Elementary School. The tree was then planted by Tree Board members. • An expanded display on the threat of the emerald ash borer had more than 200 visitors at the GretnaLife Community Expo and the 14th Annual Gretna Tree Talk took place at Thomas Elementary School. • The Gretna poster contest theme was “Plant Trees for Spring Color.” The grand prize winner was fifth-grader Amy Clarke of Aspen Creek Elementary School. In addition to tree care, the Gretna Tree Board dedicated 2019 to the original members of the Gretna Tree Board. Founding 1988 members: Norman Connelly, Gretna city forester; Mary Gilligan; Beth Woods; Lisa Babcock; Ethel Filmer and Bob Rustermier. The Gretna Tree Board now has two Nebraska certified
TREE CITY USA The highlight of the year was the award of Arbor Day Foundation “Tree City USA Award” for the 32nd year and the “Tree City USA Growth Award” for 22 years to the City of Gretna. Gretna was again one of only nine Nebraska Cities to receive the Growth Award for superior service to the community in the development of tree park canopy and the education of the general public in proper tree care.

Gretna Neighbors Food Pantry
Bill Lewis accepts a donation on behalf of Gretna Neighbors from Jade Mero, Riley Myers, Koryn Winder and Amber Mero. In lieu of birthday presents, Jade collected nonperishable goods for the food pantry.
Did you know? You need only be a resident of the Gretna Public School District to receive assistance. Gretna Neighbors Food Pantry has been serving the Gretna community since the 1970s. The pantry began in the basement of Gretna City Hall, moved to the gymnasium of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and then the basement of Resurrection Lutheran Church. When that space was outgrown, the Food Pantry moved to its current location in Cort Plaza, which provides space to serve a larger portion of the Gretna Community. This move also meant that the pantry needed to start paying rent, so a rent sponsorship program was created. Rent donations, in any
amount, are always welcome. The Gretna community’s generosity has enabled the pantry to assist an average of 20-25 families a month and more than 200 families a year with dry and canned goods, personal and household items as well as basic meat items.
Current Needs The pantry can use any food items but please ask for specifics on meat donations. Cleaning products (laundry items, sponges, cleaning sprays, dish soap, etc.) and personal care items (toothpaste, mouthwash, hand soap, full-size shampoo and conditioner, deodorant, feminine products) are always in short supply. Items can be dropped off during pantry hours.
