Special set of wedding etiquette dilemmas HOW TO HANDLE CHANGES OF PLAN SPURRED BY THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC STORY CHRIS CHRISTEN PHOTOGRAPHY IN LAURA’S LENS f you’ve just started your wedding planning, you’re in a good position, etiquette consultant Kelly Thedinger assures couples nervous about COVID-19. “You have the advantage of planning strategically” for any curve ball the coronavirus pandemic may throw between now and your wedding date, Thedinger says. It’s still a topsy-turvy exercise, and most likely will remain so into 2021, she says. “There is no cookie-cutter advice.” But a COVID-19 playbook is beginning to emerge. These 10 tips from Thedinger and other wedding pros will help you through the etiquette dilemmas that arise with any change of plan.
Do what makes you comfortable. “This hits very close to home,” Thedinger says. “I have a son contemplating his own COVID-19 wedding plan for January 2021 in Boston.” Pick a drop-dead date for a decision on the type of wedding you will be able to have based on local projections. “It will be staying like this through the end of the year and into spring 2021,” predicts Thedinger, who is married to a physician watching the trend line of the pandemic.
1
Don’t second-guess yourself. “If you can accept that smaller is OK, stay with your original date and scale back,” advises Lilian Jacobitz of Creative Fleurs. “If you’re distraught that you can’t have everything you’ve always dreamed about — lots of guests, dinner and dancing — then move your date.” All of her spring and summer brides elected to move their dates to late 2020 or early 2021.
2
See how couples like Allison and Brandon pivoted their 2020 wedding plans, Page 37.
Consider hiring a wedding planner to help you sort through your options. “It’s the best decision my son and his fiancé made,” Thedinger says. A planner gives you an extra set of eyes on vendor contracts, plus added insight and expertise to pivot and improvise, if necessary.
3
As you compile your guest list, take the extra step to get everyone’s email address, phone number and mailing address. Go ahead and send your save-the-date announcement four to six months in advance, then stay connected with your guests throughout the planning process.
4
5
Prepare your invitations but wait to seal the envelopes. “Invitations typically are sent two months in advance. The pandemic gives you permission to shorten the lead time,” Thedinger says. She suggests delaying until your plans are firm. CONTINUED ON PAGE 22 weddingessentialsmagazine.com

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 21
If your wedding is scaled back, notify everyone who received a save-the-date or an invite. Craft a heartfelt message telling them that it’s not going to be possible to have everyone there. “Be sensitive to your audience,” Thedinger says. Sending an email is fine for those who use the Internet regularly. For others, a phone call is best. “The most personal form of communication is the best form.”
If your wedding is postponed after your invitations have gone out, send a printed announcement of the change. State the reason for postponing and announce the new date, if you can. If your invitations are already printed but haven’t gone out, simply add an enclosure card stating the new date. “The main thing is to be certain that there is no confusion over the date,” Thedinger says.
If you decide to cancel your wedding, call everyone on your guest list. If calling isn’t practical, use email to notify as many people as possible, and telephone those who don’t use the Internet.
Realize that everybody understands the fluidness of the situation, especially with guest lists. “Nobody feels slighted,” Thedinger says. Keep your guests updated so they feel part of the event — even if they might not be able to attend.

If your wedding has been downsized and a guest who can’t come already has sent a gift or contributed to your Honey Fund, it’s not necessary to offer the gift’s return. “I can understand how a bride and groom might be sensitive to that,” says image consultant and author Dick Lerner. “But it’s not necessary. The gift will not be an issue with a close friend or family member.” Graciously accept and acknowledge it as coming from the heart.
10
*
And a bonus tip for guests. “Be a good guest. We have to be understanding as plans are being unraveled,” Thedinger says. “Be gracious. Be kind. Be positive. And RSVP on time.”

Wedding insurance may give you peace of mind STORY CHRIS CHRISTEN
M
other Nature certainly has been meddling in Nebraska weddings.
The blizzards of 2018. The floods
of 2019. The coronavirus of 2020. Countless ceremonies and receptions have fallen victim. But amid all the cancellations, postponements and slimmed-down arrangements, love has prevailed. So has empathy and compassion, as vendors, families and friends have rallied to save the day. But luck can get you only so far. For couples planning weddings in 2021 and beyond, special event insurance may provide peace of mind. “It makes sense to be prepared,” says Michael Giusti, a senior writer with InsuranceQuotes.com, an aggregator of policies and premiums. “When the world is up in the air and there is risk, people automatically look for ways to mitigate that risk.” Here, he covers the basics of determining insurance that’s right for you.
24
SUMMER 2020
What is special event insurance?
Why should I consider both?
It’s an all-encompassing term for policies that protect you from specific — rather than general — things that can happen beyond your control. Liability and cancellation insurance policies are the most common for weddings. Liability insurance protects you, your guests and your venue from accidents, unexpected damages and some wedding cancellation costs. Think dance floor damage, injury to a guest on the premises, lost or stolen gifts, a vendor snafu. Your venue most likely will require a liability policy as part of your contract, so be sure you read and understand the fine print before signing. Cancellation insurance helps protect your investment if you’re forced to postpone or cancel your wedding for an unforeseen reason, i.e. a key vendor or venue goes out of business and you lose nonrefundable deposits, an ice storm or tornado hits on your wedding day, the bride or groom or an immediate family member is in an accident or takes ill, etc. Such a policy, however, does not cover cancellation or postponement because of an epidemic or a pandemic (although you may be able to purchase a rider for that inclusion).
“The average wedding costs as much as a family car,” Giusti says. “You’d never drive a car down the street without insurance, so why would you plan a wedding without protecting your investment?” Before you seek quotes on liability insurance, see whether your homeowner’s insurance policy offers sufficient coverage. If not, you’ll need to purchase a rider. Wedding cancellation insurance adds a different layer of protection. “If you cancel because you’re scared of having your wedding during a pandemic, you’re not covered,” Giusti says. Wedding insurance can help, however, if your photographer has to back out at the last minute because of a camera failure, or your best man’s flight is canceled; or a hurricane wipes out your destination wedding venue and all your deposits.
Is a change of heart covered? Generally, no. However, it is possible to get a change-of-heart rider, with restrictions.
Omaha’s Premier Source for Party & Event Rentals
What else is excluded in a general policy? As stated previously, epidemics and pandemics — across the board.
How are premiums calculated? The cost of special event liability insurance depends on the length of coverage (one day or more), the type of event(s) and the number of people attending the event(s). For budgeting purposes, allow $125$200. Wedding cancellation insurance is based on a percentage of the total wedding cost. For a $50,000 wedding, budget for $500 to $800, knowing that variables will impact the cost.
When should I start shopping for insurance? As soon as your date, venue and budget are locked in. For many couples, that’s one year in advance of the wedding date. As you explore policies and riders, consider your biggest worries. What keeps you up at night? If something happens that’s out of your control and you have to cancel contracts or a vendor goes bankrupt, how much money will you be out?

Travel insurance is a separate conversation, right? Yes. If you’re planning an expensive honeymoon, travel insurance is worth exploring. If you’ve prepaid for accommodations or a tour package and have no insurance, you could be out of luck if your honeymoon is derailed by an act of God, illness or missed connection. Trip cancellation insurance usually covers travel interruptions, theft, severe weather, lost or stolen luggage, accidents, medical and dental emergencies and financial default. “Cancel for any reason” coverage can boost the premium by 40%. As a first step, contact your credit card company and-or airline and speak with a representative. Avoid buying coverage from a cruise line or tour operator. If it goes bankrupt, you’re out your money. Travel medical insurance also is advised if you’re going abroad.

Deciding who gets a plus-one
COTTONWOOD PAVILION In 2021, beautiful couples will create beautiful memories at Cottonwood Pavilion. 1309 WEST FERGUSON ROAD SHENANDOAH, IOWA 712-370-1581 COTTONWOODPAVILION.COM
Considerations for keeping the guest list lean STORY CTW FEATURES + JESSICA THOMPSON PHOTOGRAPHY BRETT BROONER PHOTOGRAPHY
D
o you have to let all of your wedding guests bring a plus-one? The short answer: no. But how do you decide who gets to bring someone? Each situation is different. Start by taking an inventory of your proposed guest list and calculate the total head count, both with plus-ones and without. If you’re encouraging social distancing, consider the number of guests in relation to your venue’s capacity to determine how much people will be able to spread out. Extra guests also mean more money spent on the wedding; if your budget is tight, consider whether you feel a guest should get a plus-one. Guests who are married, engaged or living together should be invited as a pair.
It’s up to you if single guests are given the option of bringing someone, Whatever your strategy, be consistent. Perhaps plus-ones are given only to close family members or members of the bridal party. Or maybe you break it down to age groups, like plus-ones only for those over 18. Also consider that without a plus-one, some guests may not know anyone else at the party, which can happen if you’re inviting an old childhood friend or a coworker from years ago. A single guest who is friends with a number of other guests will still have fun going solo. Overall, there are no hard-and-fast rules about plus-ones. Just be clear with your guests in the invitation if they’re allowed to bring someone.

MARCH 20, 2020
Liz cried when she told Quentin it was time to cancel their wedding reception. But the Omaha couple’s goal was to get married and find a way to enjoy themselves, even with significantly fewer people than they planned. And their reception vendors, The Pella at Blackstone and Abraham Catering, were supportive of the couple’s wish to call it off, the bride says. Quentin and Liz exchanged vows in their living room with only immediate family in attendance. The mother of the groom stepped in to make the cakes. Quentin’s brother, Ryan, took photos. Liz did her own hair and makeup and wore her wedding dress. Friends watched on Zoom. “I feel like (our home) is a safe place for us to do it,” Liz says. “It’s where we spend the most time together, so it’s kind of special.” The couple are thinking about celebrating their first anniversary with a big gathering next year.

MARCH 21, 2020
The guest list numbered eight people. A giant doughnut was served at a reception for three. Friends who were supposed to be in the wedding didn’t even know Allison and Brandon were married until after the fact. The Lincoln couple exchanged their vows in front of their parents and daughter Raelyn at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Beatrice, Nebraska. The day ended with the bride, groom and daughter sharing a giant chocolate doughnut from Sunrise Bakery at a small reception set up by rental company The Bohemian Hatter. It was part of an effort by photographer and friend Laura Oswald of In Laura’s Lens to make the couple’s day special. “I think it might have been even more special,” Allison says. “It was more intimate and passionate. Everything worked out.” They’re holding another reception this month.

Molly Thramer + Hawken Albus
APRIL 25, 2020
Molly was devastated when she had to downsize her wedding to Hawken, from 400 guests to nine. She had been planning the details for a year and a half while finishing pharmacy school at Creighton University. (Graduation got canceled, too.) But their families had a few surprises up their sleeves to make their day just as special. After their ceremony at Christ the King Catholic Church in Cozad, Nebraska, the church parking lot was full of well-wishers who would’ve been at the wedding. “That was pretty darn cool to see all of that,” the bride says. The couple saw more friends and well-wishers celebrating from their yards on a drive around town. Later, they enjoyed Italian food and cheesecake at home. Molly and Hawken are planning to renew their vows and hold a reception in August.

Jess O’Neill + Kyle McMindes
APRIL 25, 2020
High school sweethearts Jess and Kyle moved forward with their original wedding date on a smaller scale. The big party can happen later, the Omaha couple agreed. “It was small, but we loved it,” the bride says. “We had the people who meant the world to us there.” But surprise! Their parents arranged for would-be wedding guests to parade the couple outside Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church after the ceremony. Celebratory yard signs and champagne awaited them at home, where they enjoyed Runza sandwiches, cake and their first dance to cap the day. “All those surprises from our family members made the day the best,” Jess says.

et’s face it, for the last few months, most of us engaged couples have been living in athletic wear and watching Netflix, trying to distract ourselves from our dismal reality of wedding uncertainty amid the coronavirus pandemic. Whether you’re rescheduling your wedding, downsizing your guest list to maintain social distancing, or tackling the usual challenges of wedding planning from the couch, these situations are not ideal. If you need a break from the uncertainty, here are six things you can set in stone. 1. PICK OUT WEDDING DAY GIFTS Brainstorm who you wish to give little tokens of love to: parents, siblings, grandparents, the bridal party, your bride or groom, etc. Browse the whole Internet to find perfect things for your favorite people.
2. WRITE PERSONAL NOTES FOR THE WEDDING DAY You have the time to ponder your thoughts, so why not pour out your mind and heart on paper? Write special notes for the wonderful people who made your wedding possible. Those are the obvious ones, but also think

I know the day itself will be a blur. Our ceremony and reception venues are about 25 minutes apart, giving us another challenge. Having time to home in on specific shots and how best to fit them in certain locations was a great brain teaser for this time of monotony. I suggest typing out who you want in each picture and where you want each picture to take place. Most photographers will give you a template 30 to 60 days before the wedding, but it doesn’t hurt to ask for it so you can cross one more thing off your list.
ASHLEY NICOLE CREATIVE
It’s weird to be writing about weddings when I’m unsure of my own. One minute, summer will be OK, so you think you won’t need to reschedule. The next, winter is now a concern, and the backup date can become a completely new issue. It feels selfish to shed tears over this when people are struggling with their very lives, but melancholy is how we “corona brides” are living day in and day out. It gets harder with each day as we move into the continuing unknown. The pain is real, but you are not alone. Keep planning and preparing. And just think of the overwhelming love that will fill the room when you say “I do” after months spent apart from everyone. Those simple touches, hugs and kisses will be monumental. Close your eyes and feel the embrace. What the world needs now is love.

Kristine gave Mark a confused look, and “Mark got down on one knee and asked if I would like this (rock) better.” SUNDAY FUNDAY They love Colorado and envisioned a relaxed and fun destination wedding with a natural theme. “I was pretty low-key when it came to planning and just knew I wanted everything to be outdoors with the mountains as a backdrop,” Kristine says. She picked their Colorado venue sight unseen, but she said it was the best decision. SAY I DO When it came time to put the ring on Mark’s finger, that’s all Kristine could think about. It was a long day, starting at 5 a.m. But they loved that everyone made the trip to celebrate with them. It was their favorite gift. “It was so beautiful to have so many people we love there with us.” Kristine tried to be funny and ordered golf balls with a photo of her, Mark and Fiona for her hubby. “They didn’t turn out at all.” SWEET MOMENTS From Mark kissing Kristine on the forehead, to seeing the look on Mark’s face as she walked down the aisle, to their first dance, the day was full of special moments for the bride. “The sweetest not-us moment was our flower girl, Maddy. She wanted to do such a good job ... she was placing the petals one at a time and trying to get them in a perfect row. It was adorable and really made everybody laugh.” HAPPY TRAILS For their

essica Langenfeld didn’t want to come across as demanding or rude.
She just wanted guests to put away
their phones during her wedding ceremony last fall at Countryside Community Church. Husband Justin agreed. “We didn’t want cellphones in our photography,” she said. “The photos were really important to me, and we spent a lot of money on our photographers.” Although she was on the fence about an unplugged ceremony at first, Jessica and Justin realized they weren’t in the minority. The bride attended a whopping nine weddings in one year, and almost all were “unplugged.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 67

Langenfeld used calligraphy on an antique mirror, and placed her sign outside the church. She made a similar sign for her sister’s wedding at the same church in July. Some couples are also including a line about “no cellphone photography” in their programs. Experts say it doesn’t hurt to remind guests more than once. If you anticipate a few stubborn holdouts, ask the officiant to reinforce your request (since a figure of authority is more likely to be obeyed). Having no phones at your wedding ensures two things: Your photographer will get clearer shots and no one will post pictures of the ceremony before you do. The sign might even remind people to silence their phones, too, to prevent any annoying rings or chirps in the middle of your I dos. The reception afterward is still fair game. Langenfeld, who is 27, said it’s just a sign of the times in an age where everyone seems to be glued to their phones. She didn’t see a single phone in their pictures, so the sign worked. And her professional photos, which were taken by Brett Brooner, are beautiful. “Probably the highlight of my wedding is the photography,” she said. “It’s a great way to remember it.”
