Strategies parents can use to motivate students Students may need some time to adjust at the beginning of a new school year. Summer vacations typically lack the structure of the school year, and it might be unfair to expect kids to seamlessly slip back into their more regimented lives as students. While some early school year sluggishness might be normal, that should wear off pretty quickly. If not, and students appear to be struggling to get motivated for their schoolwork, parents can try various strategies that should help reignite youngsters’ passions for learning. • Make your home more school-friendly. Summer is a relaxing time of year when parents have a tendency to relax rules around the house. But come the school year, parents must make sure their homes are as conducive to studying as possible. Resist the urge to turn the television on each night so students are not distracted from their studies. Keep the home quiet so students are mo-

tivated to focus on their homework. • Encourage participation in extracurricular activities. Studies have examined the relationship between extracurricular activities and academic performance. A 2002 study published in the journal Sociology of Education found that participation in extracurricular activities is associated with improved grade point average, increased college attendance and reduced absenteeism. The link between participation in extracurricular activities and improved academic performance is still in need of study, but such participation may help children acclimate to the structure of the school year more quickly than they might if they do not participate in such activities. • Encourage curious youngsters. Kids are curious, and fostering that curiosity can be a great way for parents to get their kids excited about learning. Whether it’s during the school year or on summer

break, encourage kids to engage in subjects that interest them. As kids learn more about the topics that interest them, they may develop a passion for learning that will follow them into the classroom. • Express an interest in the subjects children are studying. Another way to motivate students at the beginning of a new school year is to express an interest in the subjects they’re studying. Ask questions about their studies and encourage them to share their thoughts and opinions. Engaging students about what they’re studying can motivate them to explore the subjects more deeply than they otherwise might. Motivating kids to be excited about their schoolwork at the start of a new school year can sometimes be difficult. But parents can employ various strategies that can help their children readjust to life in the classroom and motivate them to perform to the best of their abilities. — Metro Creative Connection

TIPS TO HELP YOU GET READY FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR

Metro Creative Connection

Help kids get ready for fall sports season Summer is a season of relaxation, especially for school-aged children who are not yet old enough to work. Such youngsters no doubt enjoy the chance to spend summer days lounging poolside, all without a care in the world or any homework to complete. Though summer is synonymous with R&R, parents of young athletes who hope to compete in athletics when the school year begins may need to take steps to ensure their kids aren’t at risk of injury once the fall sports season begins. • Examine and replace equipment if necessary. The right equipment can protect kids from injury and help them realize their full potential as an athlete. Damaged or outdated equipment can increase kids’ risk of inju-

ry. Examine your child’s equipment long before their sports season begins so you have time to bargain hunt should anything need to be replaced. • Schedule a physical for your child. Many school districts mandate that athletes receive and pass physicals before they can compete. Speak with the athletic director at your child’s school to learn the guidelines that govern athletic physicals. The physical will need to be conducted by a predetermined date, but you may also need the physical to be conducted after a certain date for it to be considered valid. Speak with your child’s physician if any problems are found during the physical. • Let kids heal. Schedules are busier than ever before, and many young-

sters play several sports during the school year. Summer vacation may be the only extended period all year that youngsters’ bodies get to heal. While it’s important that kids stay physically active throughout the summer, make sure they don’t overdo it, as you should emphasize the importance of rest. • Gradually get back in the swing of things. While rest gives kids’ bodies a chance to heal and develop, it’s important that young athletes stay in shape over the summer. As the fall sports season draws near, help kids gradually get back in the swing of things. Tryouts tend to be physically demanding, so kids who have not lifted a finger all summer may be at risk of injury or missing the cut. Let kids ease back into

regular exercise to make sure they are not starting from scratch at tryouts. • Speak with coaches. Coaches can be great assets to parents who want to make sure their youngsters enjoy the summer without sacrificing their chances of making the team. Speak with coaches to determine if there is any

area your son or daughter can work on over the summer to improve his or her chances of making the team. Make sure kids are the ones leading the charge to improve their games; otherwise, they may feel pressured into doing so and that can take away the fun of playing sports.

School athletes should take advantage of the opportunity to relax and recover that summer presents. But athletes who hope to compete in the fall can still work with their parents to ensure they’re ready once the school year and sports season begins. — Metro Creative Connection

I would make it so we don’t have school on Mondays because it’s the worst day of the week and it makes it way worse to have school on that day too. If that doesn’t work, I would just have no school on Wednesday because lots of people have church that day. Avery Spiker

More recess time. In my opinion, the reason some kids misbehave is because they sit in a desk almost all day. If students had longer recesses, maybe they wouldn’t misbehave so

The Kiwanis Club of Bellevue honored local high school art students April 27 during the A.C. Lofton Art Show at Bellevue East High School. Five high schools participated in the event — East, Bellevue West, Bryan, Gross Catholic and Cornerstone Christian — resulting in 297 submitted pieces. Maggie Scott, a sophomore at West, won best in show for her piece “21 grams.” Josephine Linhart, a senior at West, won best in show runner-up for her piece “Behind Closed Doors.” Winners were selected from each grade level: Maelin Brick, freshman at Cornerstone, “Best Friend;” Baylee Clang, sophomore at West, “The Lion;” Jayden Jacobs, junior at Bryan, “Surrealism Dreamscape;” and Kaitlyn Fye, senior at West, “Rosenblatt.”

Lessons learned about the Grand Old Flag

Alpha Chapter #325, Order of the Eastern Star presented the U.S. Flag program of “Old Glory” to every fifth grade class in the Bellevue Public Schools during March and April. The program is designed to educate students on the United States’ flag history and flag etiquette, and to instill awareness and pride in the American flag. Members of Alpha Chapter, with assistance from American Legion Post 331, conducted 17 presentations at 15 elementary schools, reaching more than 750 students and faculty. Each student and staff member received a copy of “Our Country’s Flag,” published by the American Legion and purchased by Alpha Chapter #325, a copy of the U.S. Flag Code, a bookmark from the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post/Auxiliary #10727 and a pencil. Included in the presentation were nine flags from U.S. history, information from the U.S. Flag Code on how to use, display and care for the flag, a flag-folding demonstration with narrative, the history of the Pledge of Allegiance including a recitation from comedian/actor Red Skelton and some fun facts about the flag.
