MAYOR & BELLEVUE PUBLIC SCHOOLS SUPERINTENDENT MESSAGES
O
Welcome to Bellevue
n behalf of the Bellevue City Council and all of our residents I am excited to welcome you and would invite you to experience all that our community has to offer. In Bellevue, we enjoy the view of the rolling hills overlooking the Missouri River. We enjoy a lifestyle that blends the latest in entertainment and leisure activities with an old-time atmosphere of friendliness and welcome. We are a very patriotic community and proud to be the home of Offutt Air Force Base. We are always working to keep our economy growing and you will find both small businesses and large corporations are valued members of our community. Bellevue is well known for our low unemployment, low cost of living, low utility rates, low crime, and a strong education system ranging from great public schools to a nationally recognized university. Residents and visitors also enjoy over 600 acres of parks, wooded and paved trails that stretch for miles, numerous golf courses and dozens of ball fields and recreational activities. These are many of the reasons that Money Magazine has listed Bellevue as, “the Best Place to Live in Nebraska”. I feel Bellevue provides a rare combination of a modern lifestyle while maintaining its roots in Midwestern hospitality. We are all looking forward to the time when the citizens of our community can once again gather together at numerous parades and festivals that are held throughout the year. Hopefully we will see you there. Please feel free to explore our website at www.bellevue. net for more current information about what is happening in our great community and if you have any questions or comments we would love to hear from you. Sincerely, Rusty Hike Mayor Bellevue City Hall 1500 Wall St., 402-293-3000

OFFUTT COMMANDERS’ MESSAGES
A supportive community
W
elcome to Bellevue, home to Offutt Air Force Base and the 55th Wing. The 55th Wing’s mission is to provide dominant intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, electronic attack and nuclear command and control to national leadership and war fighters anytime, anyplace. Offutt AFB is not only critical to the war-fighting mission, but also to more than 70 partner units, including U.S. Strategic Command, 557th Weather Wing, 595th Command & Control Group and the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency. Together, Team Offutt works on behalf of the American people to ensure we meet the expectations of America’s senior leaders. Offutt AFB was originally established in 1896 as Fort Crook, in honor of Maj. Gen. George Crook, a Civil War hero. In 1924, Fort Crook officially designated its airfield as Offutt Field, named after 1st Lt. Jarvis Offutt, an Omaha native who died during World War I when his aircraft crashed in France. Today, Offutt AFB is highly active in the support of our national defense as we conduct 24/7 operations around the world, embodying our motto, “The Sun Never Sets on the Fightin’ Fifty-Fifth!” However, we would not be successful in our various missions if not for the world-class support we receive from the local community. Simply put, the Bellevue community is second-to-none, and I cannot thank you enough. Sincerely, Gavin P. Marks Colonel, USAF Commander, 55th Wing

elcome to this extraordinary community, home of U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM)! USSTRATCOM is a global warfighting command responsible for deterring strategic attack and employing forces, as directed, to guarantee the security of our Nation and our Allies. We have 150,000 Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Guardians, and civilians around the globe performing nuclear operations, global strike, joint electromagnetic spectrum operations, missile defense, analysis and targeting, and missile threat assessment. They keep watch 24/7/365 to keep our Nation safe. USSTRATCOM was originally established in 1992 as a nuclear command, and was reborn in 2002 when we added space to our portfolio. Over the next 17 years, various missions were added and removed from the command. Space is the latest mission to move from USSTRATCOM’s responsibilities, when U.S. Space Command activated in September 2019. We are proud to be part of this extraordinary community and we welcome you. I have been to many places around the world and I can tell you, there is no more special place than here. This is my third time at USSTRATCOM and Offutt AFB. My wife Lisa and I could not be happier to be back. We love this community and everything it offers our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Guardians and civilians. Thank you for supporting our community and making this a truly special place. Sincerely, Charles A. Richard Admiral, U.S. Navy Commander

BELLEVUE HISTORY
1856
1948
Built in 1856, First Presbyterian Church, 2002 Franklin St., is the oldest church in Nebraska. The church was regularly used for 100 years. It featured beautiful stained-glass windows, locally crafted oak pews and an elevated pulpit.
Fort Crook was redesignated Offutt Air Force Base after local fallen World War I pilot Jarvis Offutt. It took on new challenges, contesting Cold War threats and serving as headquarters of Strategic Air Command from 1948 to 1992.
1896 Mid-1830s The log cabin, now located at 1805 Hancock St., is one of the oldest buildings in the state. The structure was home to a Native American chief, an early Sarpy County judge, and a Civil War veteran. The log cabin is on the National Register of Historic Landmarks.
Bellevue had struggled to survive as a community, but the commissioning of a new army installation on the outskirts of the village marked the start of a special relationship Bellevue maintains with the military. Named after veteran Civil War Gen. George Crook, Fort Crook would play an important role in a number of conflicts including the Spanish American War and World War I.
1950 The Bellevue Bridge, (later dedicated as the Grand Army of the Republic Bridge) opens. Built at a cost of 2.8 million dollars, the toll bridge over the Missouri River directly connected Bellevue to Iowa and was a sign of post war progress.

BELLEVUE HISTORY
1999
1981 Bellevue welcomes home Paul Needham. After spending 444 days in captivity during the Iranian Hostage Crisis, Captain Paul Needham received a hometown welcome.
Currently one of the busiest intersections in Sarpy County, 36th Street and Highway 370 in 1999 was newly charted territory for Bellevue. Albertson’s (now Bakers) was built but much of the Twin Creek development was still a work in progress.
Timeline photos and content provided by: Ben Justman Executive Director, Sarpy County Museum
2019 1977
1992
As Bellevue grew, it became clear that another high school was needed in the Bellevue Public School System. Bellevue West opened in 1977 and is one of four high schools in Bellevue.
The end of an era was marked in 1992 when Strategic Air Command stood down and United States Strategic Command was established. SAC had been at Offutt AFB since 1948.
While flooding has occasionally happened along the mighty Missouri River, the sudden and extensive flooding of 2019 was historic. While 30,000-40,000 sandbags did little to slow floodwaters, the community came together to overcome the disaster.
