Boys Town at 100 Years A Memorable Milestone in Child Care Dear Neighbor, On December 12, 1917, Father Edward J. Flanagan welcomed a small group of wayward boys to their new home in a rundown boardinghouse at 25th and Dodge Streets in downtown Omaha. It was the beginning of a dream for the young immigrant priest, a dream that would eventually spark a revolution in child care in America and establish a community of children that would soon become known worldwide as Boys Town. This December 12, Boys Town will observe its 100-year anniversary, marking a century of hope and healing for tens of thousands of troubled boys, girls and families. Today’s special section is a celebration of that milestone, of Boys Town’s proud role in the history of Omaha and Nebraska, and especially of the Boys Town employees and supporters who have carried on the mission of Father Flanagan. In the following pages, we share the variety of ways Boys Town accomplishes our critical work, including: » Helping boys and girls overcome their troubled pasts through residential care where they learn social skills, find success in school and prepare for life as productive adults. » Helping families in crisis stay together by sending trained consultants into their homes. » Ensuring quality health care, especially for those with hearing, vision, speech and other communication disorders. » Offering valuable advice to parents and other caregivers through websites, books and other resources. » Operating a National Hotline that connects kids and parents to trained counselors who help with problems ranging from child discipline issues to threats of suicide. » Conducting groundbreaking research to discover better ways to help children with behavioral and mental health problems. From its humble beginnings, Boys Town has enthusiastically accepted its leadership role in reshaping and reforming child and family care.
In many ways, Boys Town has been America’s conscience, exposing practices that hurt children and championing changes that help our youngest and most vulnerable citizens. Our continuing obligation has been to help fix what is broken, to improve what works well and to share our expertise, experience and knowledge so more children and families can benefit. That’s why Boys Town has been able to evolve and grow while continually providing high-quality care. As the needs of children and families have changed over time and presented more difficult challenges, Boys Town has responded by developing new and better ways to bring healing in body, mind and spirit.
As the current and future caretakers of Father Flanagan’s dream, we hope that learning more about Boys Town’s work, both locally and nationally, will inspire you to embrace and support o our mission. God’s Blessings,
Father Steven E. Boes President and National Executive Director, Boys Town
We congratulate Boys Town on its centennial anniversary. We are proud to be part of your history.

Driven By Strong Local Ties
Boys Town has a wonderful story to tell about its history and legacy as a part of the Omahaarea community. It is a story that started on the streets of the city with the impossible dream of a young immigrant priest. It is the story of hope, perseverance and overcoming tremendous odds. Fortunately, for children and families today and tomorrow, it is a story of healing that will continue far into the future. Today, Boys Town is a far cry from the small home for boys that opened at 25th and Dodge Streets a century ago. The scenic Village of Boys Town remains as our national headquarters, and is home to more than 400 boys and girls of diverse ages and ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds who are working to make a new start in their lives. At our home campus and at affiliate sites across the country, Boys Town has widened its reach so more children and families can benefit from our research-proven treatment. As the problems and struggles of America’s children and families grew more complex, Boys Town changed to answer the call. But even with all the changes, we’ve been careful to preserve the strong Omaha ties and core principles that have fueled Boys Town’s success for so long. Father Flanagan was born in Ireland, but he was a citizen of Nebraska and Omaha, even before he was a citizen of Boys Town. All four of his successors were born and raised in Nebraska or Iowa, and all brought Midwestern values of compassion, caring and common sense to the job of leading the organization.

Boys Town’s presence and impact in Omaha, Nebraska and Iowa extends far beyond the boundaries of our Village. » In 2017, Boys Town’s home campus residential care program served 397 youth from Nebraska and 26 youth from Iowa. Of the Nebraska youth, 223 were from Omaha and nearby communities. » Boys Town National Research Hospital offers a broad range of hospital and clinic services locally, backed by 40 years of groundbreaking research. The Hospital provides the latest, most innovative care at two hospital locations and pediatric clinics throughout the metro area. » Our offices in South Omaha, North Omaha and Council Bluffs offer preventive programs that strengthen families, head off crisis situations and help parents solve problems with the assistance of valuable local resources. » Boys Town youth volunteer for community service projects year-round, and our youth and staff participate in Omaha-area activities such as parades, the NCAA Men’s College World Series and neighborhood celebrations. » Since 2004, Omaha-based Godfather’s Pizza has been a proud national sponsor of Boys Town, featuring the Boys Town National Hotline number (800-448-3000) on millions of pizza boxes each year and donating more than $2 million to support our programs. » Many other local businesses help support Boys Town programs and activities, and many community leaders have served on Boys Town’s National Board of Trustees. » Boys Town employs 2,155 people in the Omaha-Council Bluffs area. Boys Town is equally proud of our longtime relationship with the strong, vibrant economies of the Omaha metropolitan area and the state of Nebraska. A recent study showed that Boys Town generated these economic impacts for the Omaha Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA): $3.7 billion in total revenue impacts; $1.8 billion in wages and salaries; $144.7 million in state and local taxes.
“The Godfather,” from Godfather’s Pizza, reads to Boys Town’s young students during a campus visit.
Every year, thousands of visitors tour the place where it all began — the Village of Boys Town — and experience the spirit that makes this square mile in the Heartland a place of miracles of the heart. As a good neighbor with deep local roots, Boys Town wants everyone in Omaha to know about and understand our work. Public awareness and support are Boys Town’s greatest allies in the fight against child abuse, neglect and abandonment, and the turmoil that threatens the safety and stability of so many of America’s families. By guiding young lives toward success and building stronger, healthier families, we are helping to build stronger, healthier neighborhoods and communities.
Congratulations on 100 years of changing the lives of young boys and girls! It’s been our pleasure to have supported Boys Town for many years.

Boys Town
A Brief History In 1917, a young immigrant priest from Ireland had grown discouraged in his work with homeless, destitute men in Omaha. So in December of that year, Father Edward J. Flanagan borrowed $90 from a friend, Omaha attorney and businessman Henry Monsky, and rented a drafty Victorian-style boardinghouse at 25th and Dodge Streets to open his first Home for Boys. Father Flanagan welcomed all boys, regardless of their race or religion (something that was unheard of in that era), and homeless and delinquent youngsters from all over Omaha and beyond began showing up at the doorstep. As more boys continued to seek refuge there, the Home quickly outgrew its space. In 1921, again using borrowed money, Father Flanagan purchased Overlook Farm outside Omaha. This became the permanent site of his Home for Boys, and soon would be known as the Village of Boys Town. Boys Town continued to grow, and by the 1930s, a school, dormitories and administration buildings had been constructed. News of Father Flanagan’s work spread worldwide with the success of the 1938 Academy Awardwinning movie, “Boys Town,” starring Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney. Father Flanagan took advantage of Boys Town’s fame to advocate for changes in America’s system of care for children. Through his own fiery speeches and in partnerships with other social advocates, he was able to shut down nearly every reform school, where children were often abused and used as free labor. He also shamed faith-based orphanages into adopting his morecompassionate model of care, where youth received an education and enrichment through music, the arts and religion. In doing so, Father Flanagan showed the country that even the most troubled kid could become a good citizen. After World War II, President Truman called on Father Flanagan to advise government leaders around the world about the care of children who were orphaned during the conflict. Before leaving on such a trip to Europe in 1948, Father Flanagan was asked if anyone was dedicated enough to carry on his work at Boys Town. He replied: “The work will continue, you see, whether I am there or not, because it is God’s work, not mine.” The priest’s words would prove to be prophetic. On May
In Boys Town’s early years, the young residents crowded into a large dining room for their daily meals. Most of the food the boys ate was grown on the Boys Town farm.
15, 1948, Father Flanagan died of a heart attack in Berlin, Germany. Monsignor Nicholas H. Wegner was soon appointed Executive Director of the Home. Under his watch, Boys Town doubled in population; expanded educational, vocational and athletic opportunities for its young residents; and established a solid financial footing.
Monsignor Wegner served until 1973, retiring after 25 years of carrying on the critical mission of his predecessor. Monsignor Robert P. Hupp was named Boys Town’s new Executive Director in 1973. During his 12-year tenure, Boys Town adopted the innovative Family Home Program, See : Page 8

introducing family-style treatment to its youth (which is still a cornerstone of Boys Town’s work today). This transition became necessary as children began to come to Boys Town with more serious problems like abuse, neglect, broken families, and drug and alcohol use. In 1977, Boys Town National Research Hospital opened, quickly growing into a national treatment and research center for boys and girls with hearing and speech problems, and other related communication disorders. Boys Town also began admitting girls to its residential program in 1979. In 1985, Monsignor Hupp retired and Omaha native Father Valentine “Val” J. Peter became Boys Town’s fourth Executive Director. Under his leadership, Boys Town launched a national expansion that created affiliate sites across the country. The number of children and families served by Boys Town skyrocketed, and new research-based care technology was developed. Father Steven E. Boes was appointed as Boys Town’s fifth Executive Director in 2005. Under his current leadership, Boys Town has emphasized preventive services that focus on keeping families together while still providing high-quality out-of-home care for kids with greater needs. Today, more than 90 percent of the children Boys Town serves receive care while they are still in their homes. In 2012, Boys Town took a giant step forward in its research capabilities by launching the state-of-the-art Center for Neurobehavioral Research. With the latest in fMRI technology, the Center seeks to develop improved treatment practices for children with serious behavioral and mental health disorders. Father Flanagan’s long-ago vision of hope and faith sparked a revolution in child care that echoes today at Boys Town. His simple dream to make the world a better place for children lives on because so many people believe that every child deserves to be loved, and to live a healthy, positive life. Today, as one of the largest nonprofit child and family care organizations in the country, Boys Town’s research-proven services touch the lives of more than 2 million people every year.

The Next Person You Meet Might Be from Boys Town Boys Town’s impact is best defined by the personal, real-life stories of boys and girls (and parents and families) whose lives were changed for the better with our help. Their stories are dramatic and heartbreaking, but ultimately triumphant. By learning life skills, achieving academic goals and building trusting relationships, they have made the most of their second chances and turned their lives around. Today, these children are responsible adults who may be your neighbor, a co-worker or just someone you meet in the course of everyday life. Boys Town kids are EVERYWHERE!

Because of an undiagnosed heart defect, Trudy’s first son, Patrick, was born with permanent brain damage. This tragic event caused Trudy to turn to drugs. Using heavily, Trudy became pregnant again with her second son, Timothy. Both boys were removed from her care. Eventually Trudy found help through Boys Town and was reunited with her children.
Born to drug-addicted parents and in and out of foster care from age 3, Josh came to Boys Town as a teen. He played quarterback for the Boys Town football team and grew as a natural leader in his Family Home. Today, Josh is a college graduate and on a path to a bright future.
At 15, Diana was living in a drug house and getting ready to make a living on the streets selling drugs. One day, a young man was brutally murdered in the house by two of her housemates. Diane’s path ultimately led her to Boys Town. Today, she’s a college graduate who has her own consulting company.

Depressed, sad and lonely, Jacob handed his mother a letter in eighth grade telling her that he wanted to kill himself. After several years of sending her son to counselors and psychiatrists, Jacob’s mother found hope at Boys Town. Jacob thrived on the opportunities Boys Town offered, and today is a college student with plans to become a teacher.
Diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a child, Pyper was bullied in school to the point where she considered suicide. Pyper and her father started their journey of healing at Boys Town, where Pyper was welcomed by a group of peers who immediately embraced her for her unique gifts.
Sam was 5 when his family relocated from Haiti to Florida. As a teenager, he began running around with the wrong crowd, getting into trouble and doing poorly in school. His parents were frustrated, and Sam knew he needed to make a change. When he was given the option of going to Boys Town, he made one of the toughest and best decisions of his young life.
When Joey and April decided to become a foster family, they contacted Boys Town Foster Family Services. It was a call that forever changed their lives and the lives of the young children they’ve taken in to love and nurture as their own.

Boys Town National Research Hospital 40 Years of Innovation in Health Care and Research Boys Town National Research Hospital has never been afraid of change. In fact, it’s been our mission since opening in 1977: To change the way America cares for children, families and communities. We change lives every day by using virtual technology to conduct hearing research in ways no one thought possible. We study the vestibular system to change how balance disorders are diagnosed and treated. We use video games and brain scans to change the path of a troubled child’s life. We change the way tiny ears are fitted with hearing aids and how children see and hear the sights and sounds of the world around them. For the last four decades, Boys Town National Research Hospital has been internationally recognized as a leader in clinical and research programs, focusing on childhood deafness, visual impairment and related communication disorders. We have assembled national leaders in research who are making important contributions in the areas of genetics, hearing, language, vision and speech disorders. Applying our findings with new technologies, distance learning and the exploration of new research frontiers, the opportunities for new medical diagnoses and treatment discoveries are endless. Today, the Hospital offers a broad range of hospital and clinical services, backed by 40 years of life-changing research, to provide the latest, most-innovative care. From acute pediatric inpatient hospitalization and surgical services to outpatient visits to residential care for children and adolescents with severe behavioral disorders, our board-certified specialists and highly trained pediatric nurses are focused on caring for the unique needs of children and their families. Boys Town really began when Father Flanagan experienced a miracle in his own heart, a miracle of caring and faith that led him to open his Home for Boys. That single act ignited the priest’s even more-ambitious campaign to change and transform America’s child care system. At 100 years strong, Boys Town is proud of its legacy of service and its commitment to the well-being of children, families and communities. Our roots run deep and everything we do today has been layered onto the solid foundation of what Boys Town has accomplished over the past century. Boys Town has always been in the “business” of helping people lead better lives. For some, this means escaping the hurt and pain of abuse and neglect. For others, it means learning how to head off a crisis so a family can stay together. For still others, it means tapping into Boys Town’s vast experience to ensure children are being nurtured and raised with positive values and skills that will serve them well as caretakers of their own families. Boys Town has worked hard to position itself for the next leap forward in child and family care. That leap will involve providing opportunities for life-changing care for every child, every family and every community across the country. This will happen through Boys Town’s high-quality youth, family and health care services; advocacy for system reform and sufficient funding of programs; application of research findings to enhance treatment; closer working relationships with schools and communities; a broader local and national impact; and concerted efforts to influence decision-makers to do what
