FitGirl camp teaches girls empowerment By Melinda Keenan WORLD-HERALD CORRESPONDENT

Sitting with her daughters at the College World Series four years ago, Cheri Dickmeyer got a sobering look at how cruel kids can be. Her middle school girls were on their phones and shared with her some lighthearted messages and pictures. Then they talked about how bad things sometimes happen — how a simple dispute between two people can explode into an online fight, with gangs of children weighing in with hurtful comments. Youngsters are bullied and humiliated. “These kids are devastated,” she said. Someone should do something, she thought. So she did. Thirty days later, she hosted her first FitGirl camp, which is designed to help girls make positive changes in how they feel about themselves. The Omaha-based nonprofit FitGirl organization builds girls’ self-esteem year-round through programs and workshops that include self-defense lessons, healthy eating tips, fitness options, online empowerment classes, and after-school and in-school presentations. But the summer camps are the heart of FitGirl’s operation. The three-day motivational overnight camps feature more than 20 speakers and instructors who focus on physical, mental and emotional health. They include experts on healthy eating, physical fitness, personal hygiene, career planning and positive thinking. Campers also have fun doing magic tricks, practicing yoga and getting henna tattoos. The camps, which are at Platte River State Park near Louisville, feature plenty of swimming, hiking, archery, horseback riding and stories by the

A group of campers scream as they “remove their thumbs” in a trick they learned from magician Joe Cole. campfire. Campers are divided by age: 8- to 11-year-olds and 12- to 14-year-olds. Last year, the camps were filled with 160 girls, with another 25 on a waiting list. This summer, Dickmeyer is expanding the camps to accommodate 200. “We have the demand,” she said. FitGirl teaches campers to embrace who they are and not let negative experiences define them. “Middle school is the hardest time,” Dickmeyer said. “Sixth, seventh and eighth grade is when kids are trying to figure out where they fit in.” Nearly all those associated with the camps are volunteers who believe in the mission and want to make a difference in girls’ lives, Dickmeyer said. Judith Howard is one of the volunteers. After a 21-year career as an Omaha firefighter, she now operates her own catering business and makes lunch for

the girls. Her message is to do what you feel passionate about, be productive and not let anyone tell you what you can’t do. “It’s just amazing where these girls can go,” she said, reflecting on the opportunities available to women. Howard’s presentation impressed Sydney Lohr of Millard, a 15-year-old who was inspired by Howard’s career. “I felt like we had a connection,” she said. This is the third year Lohr has been at the camp — the first two as a camper, and last year as a counselor. Why does she keep coming back? “I get a good vibe here,” Lohr said. “I’m learning about things like not to give up,” said 9-year-old Gwen Howard, who also is learning about letting new people into her life. “I made two new friends,” she said.

Putting the focus on science By Melinda Keenan WORLD-HERALD CORRESPONDENT

MELINDA KEENAN FOR THE WORLD-HERALD

Aleigha Jackson, left, and Joslynn McKibbin create the perfect colors and shapes for their sculptures at an Omaha Children’s Museum camp. while Storm brings about a lesson in weather patterns, Saalfeld said. The museum extends its offerings for even younger children with the Two, Three and Me camp. A parent or another accompanying adult participates in playtime activities designed to encourage learning and the development of motor skills. Back at the art class, the children are using simple engineering principles to create their sculptures. A wire strung with scraps of construction paper is bent in a U-shape, with the ends anchored in foam. Will it stand up or fall over? The kids learn about weight distribution and solve any problems. The day before, they studied colors. The campers also

took eyedroppers filled with color dye, dripped them into plates containing a large coffee filter covered in water, and observed how the colors spread and mixed as they settled on the paper filter. The camps give kids the chance to do messy things they can’t do at home, Saalfeld said. That includes paper mache, which takes several days and teaches the kids that some goals or projects can only be achieved through steps or processes. By exposing campers to different STEAM experiences, Saalfeld said, the museum hopes the children will develop a curiosity that carries over into school. “Maybe it will spark interest in something,” she said.

Tiny hands gripping safety scissors make precision cuts to brightly colored construction paper to form triangles and nonsensical shapes. The concentration is so intense that these seven little artists barely speak. Wearing protective aprons decorated with markers the day before — some choosing to wear them like superhero capes — this group of 4- and 5-year-olds is creating sculptures from paper, wire and foam. They think they are just having fun. But Hillary Saalfeld with the Omaha Children’s Museum knows differently. “There’s a lot of science behind it,” she said. Saalfeld is the museum’s director of education, overseeing the 21 summer camps available to children ages 2 through 8. Last year, the museum introduced 10 new camps, and the emphasis of each — besides fun — is learning. The science camps have proved to be the most popular, Saalfeld said. Last year the museum expanded its science camp offerings and incorporated STEAM initiatives — science, technology, engineering, art and math — into each camp’s daily activities. Among the new camps is Mind Benders. It’s all about brain games — a week of riddles, brainteasers, puzzles and math games. Another new camp is Science Quest, where campers perform experiments and get a behind-the-scenes look at the museum’s science shows. Then there’s the new Curious Critter, where campers learn about the biology of animals through hands-on experiments and activities. Those camps join old favorites such as Minecraft, based on the popular building-block computer game that tests critical-thinking skills and creativity of children ages 6 through 8. The younger set — ages 4 and 5 — gets hands-on with robots and light sabers at the new Mini Jedi Training camp and creates their own instruments as they study music and sound at the new Feel the Beat camp. At the new Superhero Science camp, kids learn about the forces of nature behind comic book heroes. Aquaman, for example, evokes a discussion about water,

Morgan Lewis didn’t want to go to summer camp. But her doctor, her nurse and her mom wouldn’t stop bugging her. The then-17-year-old succumbed to their gentle pressure just days before the start of the July 26 camp. “I’m just not a ‘camp’ kind of girl,” she said. But she learned quickly that Camp CoHoLo isn’t an ordinary camp. By the third day of her five-day adventure at the Eastern Nebraska 4-H Center in Gretna, Lewis was glad she came. Diagnosed with cancer on March 1, she had not yet come to know teens going through the pain and emotional struggles she was experiencing. Here, she was surrounded by such youths. “These kids are normal,” she said. “They don’t sit at home sick.” Indeed. The 79 campers had traded their hospital visits, surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation for a few days of normalcy with new friends in the fresh air and sunshine deep in the woods along the Platte River. Camp CoHoLo — short for Courage, Hope, Love — is entering its 34th year of providing fun for children ages 6 through 17 who are dealing with cancer and blood disorders. Anisa Hoie, a hematology and oncology nurse at Children’s Hospital & Medical Center, has been a volunteer with the camp almost from the start. Many of the campers — including Lewis — are her patients. “If a kid wants to come to camp, no matter their medical condition, I will make it happen,” Hoie said. Camp Director Berta Ackerson agrees. If a child in a wheelchair wants to go down the 20-foot inflatable water slide or fly down the zipline, volunteers are available to help accomplish the goal. “We will move heaven and earth,” she said. Camp counselors use golf carts and lightweight utility vehicles to transport any child unable to walk or too weak to hike the hilly, bumpy trails. Many campers are going through radiation and chemotherapy. They have lost their hair and have ports under their skin. In some cases, the cancer is in remission. Other campers are coping with effects from treatments in their lifelong battle with a blood disorder. Two doctors and two nurses from Children’s Hospital and the University of Nebraska Medical Center volunteer to monitor each child and administer medication. Campers may require oral medications, tube feedings, blood draws and IV treatments. “For some of these kids, this will be their only camp experience,” Hoie said. But it’s an experience like no other. The campers find immediate acceptance. They don’t need to explain why

they don’t have hair, why they have a bump on their chest or how they got that scar. The kids are very welcoming and understanding because they’ve all gone through it, Hoie said. The kids bond quickly over their common malady. Most are strangers when they arrive, and within hours form friendships that will last long after they go home. In between the activities, laughter and teen chatter, Ackerson said she has heard kids openly discuss their cancers and surgeries with each other, comparing treatments and medications. Lewis, a senior at Concordia High School, said having people around who are going through the same experience is helpful. “If I talk to kids at school, they don’t really understand anything,” she said. At the same time, the camp is a distraction from cancer treatments. “It’s super fun,” Lewis said. These kids spend most of their time in hospitals, not in school learning and socializing, Hoie said. The camp changes that perspective. “During their medical journey, they do realize they can still have fun, still be a kid,” she said. Camp CoHoLo splits the fun between two age groups. Last year a record 89 kids ages 6 through 11 filled the cabins for four days and three nights. That was followed by campers ages 12 through 17 for five days and four nights. Last year’s theme was “Artists & Athletes.” The athletes played laser tag, conquered the rope courses, climbed a rock wall or flexed their muscles in other ways. The artists learned about storytelling, songwriting, photography and videography. One morning an instructor from The Corky Canvas in Omaha helped campers paint a sunset landscape as they sipped nonalcoholic bubbly from champagne flutes. Other guest speakers came from The Rose Theater, the Omaha Street Band, University of Nebraska at Omaha baseball, Creighton University soccer and the UNO Science Club. Each camp session ends with a dance. Campers are from throughout Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri and South Dakota. Parents pay only a $15 registration fee, but even that is waived for families already burdened by medical bills. “We rely on the generosity of area companies and private donations,” Ackerson said of covering expenses. The camp is run by 26 volunteers from all walks of life, she said. “We have no paid staff.” Some volunteers are former campers with their own cancer stories to tell. As the camp ended last year, Lewis hoped to keep in touch with her cabin-mates, with whom she had become close. She won’t be back this summer only because, at 18, she’s too old. But, she said, “I would.”

YOUNG AT HEART Adults can enjoy camp too; quilting, writing, hiking — even cannonballs into the pool. By Maggie O’Brien WORLD-HERALD CORRESPONDENT

Camp is one of those rites of passage. Who doesn’t remember the first time they went to an overnight camp? You’re feeling both thrilled and terrified at the idea of being away from home — and your parents — for at a week or two in the summer. Will you ever forget the boy or girl you kissed at summer camp 20 or 30 or 40 years ago? No. Summer camp is firmly ingrained in American popular culture, with movies like “Meatballs” and “The Parent Trap” and even “Friday the 13th” showing us why it remains a coming-of-age experience that you don’t forget. But maybe kids shouldn’t have all the fun. Some 600 camps in the U.S. cater to adults, according to the Indiana-based American Camp Association. That means grown men and women can embrace their nostalgic sides and do something they likely never thought they would do: Go back to camp. The Salvation Army offers an Older Adults Camp every June. Held at the organization’s Gene Eppley Camp just south of Bellevue, it was created to help those age 55 and older reclaim their youth and enjoy each oth-

er’s company. About 75 people — both couples and singles — participate every year, according to coordinator Diane Schilmoeller. Some even are in their 90s. Campers stay in cabins — boys in one area of camp, girls on the other — and go swimming, do archery, watch movies, work on craft projects and participate in other activities. “I see this as their vacation,” said Schilmoeller. For some repeaters, “it’s the only time (all year) they get to see their friends.” This year’s camp is scheduled for June 4-7. Checkin is 4 p.m. the first day. The cost is $40. For more information and a registration form, call Schilmoeller at 402-898-7700, extension 1153. The deadline to register is May 15. Camp Calvin Crest in Fremont hosts quilting and scrapbooking retreats several times a year. The setting almost makes you feel like you’re back at summer camp — almost. Attendees enjoy motel-style accommodations instead of cabins or tents. “One of the things people enjoy most about coming out here is having the time and space to do their craft,” said director Craig Huffman. “When you think about summer camp for kids, you think about trying new things. The same thing goes for adults. We just offer

»

nicer accommodations.” Quilting retreats are Feb. 22-25 and Oct. 24-28; scrapbooking sessions are March 9-11, June 1-3 and Nov. 9-11. Prices depend on the package you select. Come for the day or make a weekend of it. Details at calvincrest.org. For serious poetry and fiction writers, there’s the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop in Iowa City. Its Iowa Summer Writing Festival features weekend and weeklong workshops from mid-June through July. Have a high schooler with a passion for writing? Check out the residential creative writing program for teens, June 17-30 (session 1) and July 8-21 (session 2). Explore your options here as programming details become available: uiowa.edu. The St. Benedict Center in Schuyler, Nebraska, offers faith-centered weekend retreats year-round. July’s offerings include a Saturday-Sunday retreat for mothers and daughters (ages 11-14). The “Bloom” session focuses on “communication that is so essential for growth into mature womanhood.” The cost is $180. Learn more about that session and other opportunities for personal and spiritual growth at sbc.retreatportal.com.
