fter hours of labor followed by countless sleepless nights and constant worry, you’re lucky if you catch a glimpse of your face in the mirror as you brush your teeth. Who am I? A mom. Once you become a mom, you kind of forget to flat-iron or blow-dry your hair. Your obsession with perfect makeup and your looks goes to the wayside. And manicures – what manicures? It’s a new year, and it’s time for a new you. That’s why this issue is dedicated to help you make over your beauty routine. By this we mean to learn how to find time to brush your hair and gloss your lips. This issue will teach you how to look pretty in a hurry. You need to learn how to prioritize your look – as do I. We need to set realistic goals. We can do this by managing our time beauty-wise, and by choosing makeup that is worth the application time. We can appear put-together in a well-tailored jacket or quality knits, but our face needs to reflect the same. Check out our easy makeup looks, tips and hairstyles to help you save much-needed time.

Maximize Storage
There are a few easy and costeffective ways to maximize storage in a bathroom. • If you have drawers, get a few drawer dividers. This helps contain like items so they don’t spread out within the space. It also saves you time when you need to find something. • If you have a wide-open space under your sink, consider getting a freestanding shelf to divide the vertical space. This will double your storage. • If you have hard-to-reach deep spaces, then get a storage container that you can easily pull out. This will help make the space more useful. • Need more storage? Consider a hanging shoe rack on the back of your door for extra storage. You can also cut a hanging shoe rack down to fit on the cabinet door under the sink.
Fewer Products
We have all done it. We purchase a 10-step skin care system that is guaranteed to make our wrinkles disappear and our skin to glow. But in reality, do we use it? Try to simplify your routine with fewer steps and products. Evaluate what you have and what you actually use. An easy way to do this is to pretend you are going on a trip. What would you take with you? What about all the expensive stuff you’ve already purchased? If you aren’t using it, then it is just taking up space. Your money has left your wallet and will not come back, whether you have the item under your sink or not. Plus, many times after you remove the item, the guilt over buying it and not using it will go away.

to Free Up Space and Time Expired/Old Makeup
Be aware that most beauty supplies have expiration dates. They last anywhere from three months to three years. The general rule: The closer to the eye that the product is used, the shorter the life span. An easy way to help you remember how long you’ve had a product is to write the date of purchase on the container. A black or silver Sharpie kept in your makeup drawer will help make this easy.
Prime Real Estate
This is not a suggestion to find a new home. It is in regard to the prime real estate in your current space. Consider where you stand each morning and evening to perform your beauty routine. It is probably in front of a mirror and by the sink. Now, consider what is within arm’s reach. This is your prime real estate for that space. The only items in this space should be those that you use every single day. Once-a-week items can be placed under the sink. Once-amonth items can be placed even further away.

how I do It | Kristin Haas
Baby Makes Two
A story about creating a family with an unknown donor. “How I Do It” introduces you to a local mom and how she juggles life. This month: Kristin Haas, an associate professor of occupational therapy at College of Saint Mary. She’s a 41-year-old single mother by choice of a daughter, Kiera Kathleen, age 18½ months. CHOOSING TO HAVE A CHILD “I never saw myself as someone who would have a child in a nontraditional way. But when I was 38 years old, I went to my doctor and talked about my options for having children. I opted to try IUI (intrauterine insemination) using anonymous donor sperm. Shortly after that appointment, I went to a reproductive endocrinologist. After testing, I had my first insemination in August 2009. I did six trials and had one miscarriage before getting pregnant with my daughter. This was not covered by insurance, so it was emotionally draining
and expensive. For my last attempt, I tried everything in addition to injectable fertility drugs. I had fertility massages and took high doses of vitamin D. Who knows what made it work, but it did.”
“Several things have made this easier. First, my family has been completely supportive. Second, I really feel like I am at a point in my life where I am financially secure enough to do this.”
FALL REGISTRATION BEGINS IN FEBRUARY! 2 yrs - Pre-K Spaces available Tuesday and Friday 9:30 AM - 2:30 PM
FINDING SUPPORT “The decision to have a child by myself was difficult. It was hard to give up on the dream of having a husband and doing it more traditionally. However, I am so glad that I never settled in my past relationships and that I get to make the decisions regarding my daughter. Several things have made this easier. First, my family has been completely supportive. Second, I really feel like I am at a point in my life where I am financially secure enough to do this. Not that I have all of my finances figured out or that I have a ton of money in savings, but I know that I can support two people on my salary.”

GETTING PREGNANT “The whole process of using donor sperm was interesting. There are sperm banks that have online databases that you can search. My doctor used one specific bank, so I searched that bank looking for a donor I liked. However, it was pretty overwhelming considering all of the things that can be looked at. My doctor had some sperm on-hand, so I went through that list first. I ended up making a list of several traits I wanted and a few things that would rule a donor out, and I went from there. I also set up an online poll for my family and friends so they could look at the top choices and vote. Before I got pregnant, I used three different donors. I purchased all of the available information on the donor so Kiera can have it when she asks about it.
day a week most of the time during this first year of her life. The other nice thing is that I can do grading and planning at home after Kiera goes to bed. I do this often during the semester. One thing I am constantly working on to be a better mom is to be more present. Sometimes I feel like I am too attached to my phone or email and need to just enjoy my time with Kiera.
WORK LIFE “I have a flexible job as a professor. I have a 12-month contract, so I do not have summers off, but I have nice breaks for the holidays and spring break. I teach three to four classes per semester, and I need to work at least 10 office hours a week on campus. However, I can leave to take Kiera to doctors’ appointments. Or if she is sick, I can get my classes covered. I have been lucky to be able to stay at home with her one
PERSONAL SACRIFICE “I think the biggest personal sacrifice I have made was giving up on the dream of having a husband first and then children. I still hope to find a partner some day. I actively strive to have balance in my life, however, I think this is near impossible. One thing that helps is that I like my job, so overall, my life is very satisfying. I try to do things such as organize, prioritize, say no, let things go and not worry about the small things. I have
BEING A MOM “I love everything about being a mom! I love hugs and smiles. I love when she is excited to see me. I like reading books together in bed. Kiera is so excited when she gets to lay in bed with me. Being silly together is great! My favorite thing is watching Kiera develop her own little personality as she grows.
blessings beyond belief. It is not that I was unhappy before I had Kiera, however, I feel so much more content now with everything. I know what a blessing she is, and I thrive on the unconditional love we have for each other.â€? A COUPLE OF CONCERNS “My big issue is something that will come in the future. I worry about the choices I have made and Kiera’s lack of two parents and a father figure. I think a lot about how I will explain things to her when she starts asking. I do belong to several online groups of single mothers by choice, but I have not found any local women who have made the choice that I did.â€? BEING A SINGLE MOM ‌ “It is important to be a role model for Kiera, especially as she gets older. I want her to know how to balance her life, have satisfaction in many areas of life and to achieve anything that she wants to. Working gives Kiera and I the life we have, and it is a necessity. So my biggest piece of advice is to find a job that you love, and to take your time finding a day care provider that you are comfortable with. This will make it easier to leave your child if you must work to support your family.â€?

‘Hot Babe’at 30? Darn Right!
T
here are times when I fondly look back at my 20s and remember how easy it was to look good for a night out with my husband. Yep, those were the good old days. I could swoop into any store, find an outfit and take it home without trying it on. Sure enough it would fit like a glove, and I did not need to wear Spandex cat to smooth any lumps koehler or bumps. My makeup routine included a little mascara, blush and Chap Stick. Two kids and 10 years later, I have a collection of Spanx in every color, style and size. They have become my second skin. I
have tried umpteen different concealers to hide the dark circles that play peek-a-boo under my eyes, and I am still searching for one that actually works. My backside is trying to cross over my hips to my front side, and the “girls” are starting to head south. I also have to be careful not to actually put my laptop on my lap. I learned that embarrassing lesson when my midsection carelessly typed a paragraph. So yeah, I’m not a hot twentysomething anymore. But what I am is so much more than any twentysomething could ever hope for. I am the mother of two pretty awesome kids. I am the wife of a man who still sees me as the most beautiful girl in the world – even when my hair is a mess and I’m wearing mismatched sweats. I am confident. I am smart. I am resourceful. I am experienced. I am loved. I am a hot thirtysomething!
