here’s no better place to be in July than a pool or splash park. We bought our daughters, Alejandra, 6, and Gabriella, 3, three swimsuits apiece this year. We’re already getting our money’s worth trying out pools, splash parks and spray grounds across the city. Our favorite play zones so far include Pirate Cove in Council Bluffs; the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge Plaza; Seymour Smith Park; and Shadow Lake Towne Center in Papillion. We’re eager to check out the Westwood Heights Sprayground at 12334 Seldin Drive. I hear it has a rainbow and a water-spraying serpent. That’s so cool. Visit momaha.com for a listing of parks with timed water jets, dumping buckets and cannon sprayers that have made an impression on my youngest in particular. If you see me poolside, swing by and say hi. I love making new friends. And bring this issue with you! It’s the perfect summertime companion. We’ll help you plan your child’s next birthday party; make you smile with our girly girl’s guide to glamping; and share a recipe for a crowdpleasing appetizer for your next neighborhood gathering. Happy summer!

e all know how hard it is to “break up” with our hairstylist. But have you ever wondered why? Think about what you have shared with that person beyond the everyday stuff like your kids, your job and your weekend plans. Sometimes you share, well, secrets. “I totally know secrets that could damage someone – or benefit them – like a new business opening, said Amy Todd of Kontempo. But it can be a two-way street. “What bizarre stories have we shared with our clients?” Todd wondered. Anything goes at Reveal Salon and Spa, which has a friendly, small-town atmosphere, said Natasha Fehlhaber. “We have genuine relationships with our clients,” she said. “When they’re sad we’re sad.” Regardless of how a client feels when she slides into one of their chairs, these stylists agree that their job is to make her day better. “You listen. And you make her feel pretty,” said Lance Freeman of Urbane Salon and Day Spa.
Amy Todd KONTEMPO Director of operations & designer stylist Experience: Five years
What their clients talk about: • Gossip. “I try to steer (the conversation) elsewhere,” Todd said. • Relationship problems. • Health issues. • Family.

Big changes usually mean: That a client’s decision-making is emotionally charged and is sometimes irrational. “It’s all about education and compromise,” Freeman said about responding to clients who ask for radical changes to their style.
What a client’s hair says about them: • Whether she’ll be happiest with a “wash-and-go” style or a new do that requires time to maintain. • Whether you’re healthy. “Your hair can signal changes in your body,” Fehlhaber said. For example, hormone fluctuations during and after pregnancy can cause hair loss, or hair may not hold color as well.
“It’s reassuring to know that everyone goes through what you’re going through and that your life is normal.” What they wish their clients didn’t talk about: • The bedroom. • Secrets between friends when the friends are both clients. • Unrealistic expectations. • Politics. • Religion. MIND YOUR P’s
for successful party planning Parties of all sizes are meant to be fun for family and friends. The hostess can have a well-planned party – and some fun, too, – with these pointers.
12 3 PINTEREST PARADOX If you look on Pinterest for a party checklist, you will come across great decorating and party ideas – but you can’t do them all. Pick a few that will make your party memorable, but don’t stress yourself out with extra projects. Parties are about the people – not the party favors.
PRO PARTY PLANNER A notebook to collect all of your thoughts and ideas works well. You may even want to create a spreadsheet. There are also lists and apps that you can download. A well-rated app is the Pro Party Planner. Prefer paper? You can find lots of party planning lists on Pinterest.com.

PRIORITIZE PROJECTS There are always home projects that need to be done before a party. You may want to clean closets, touch up the paint on the walls, plant flowers, clean the garage – the list can go on. Write the projects down, prioritize them, start early and then stay on task. Sticking to your priorities can keep you focused and productive.
PICK A PINCH HITTER Although we would like to believe that we can do it all, we can’t. What are your strengths? Focus on the tasks that you enjoy, and delegate the rest. You have friends who are crafty – ask them to make centerpieces. You have friends who are good cooks – ask them to bring appetizers. Many hands make light work.

PREVENT THE PROFUSION OF PRESENTS If you are a giftgiver, think big. Go in with a group to get something big on the recipient’s wish list. This prevents the influx of small things that he or she may not need or want. If you are going small, think consumables or experiences. These items will probably not be re-gifted.

A royally surprising affair
It came as a shock when late in life my mother revealed that she had never had a birthday party. ever. to remedy that, I threw her a royally fun 80th birthday feast with 10 of her closest friends (including her parish priest) at a local restaurant. my mom, suzy, was fearless, but she avoided the limelight like the plague. she often would tell me, “now, don’t put me in the newspaper.” and so it was that mom’s first-ever birthday bash would be a semi-public roast capped with a loving toast. Just before it was time for dessert, my husband, Kurt, and I excused ourselves from the table, changed into elizabethan threads (he in tights, and I in velvet robe) and emerged with a restaurantstopping proclamation. In our best royal court voices with all eyes on suzy, we pronounced her Queen for all ages. I made a scroll for Kurt (as royal herald), and for Queen suzy there was a scepter and a sash adorned with D.I.y. medallions for being the best mom, friend, coffee-maker and nut bread-baker in the world. I’d pay a king’s ransom to relive that birthday with her. mom died in 2012. she was 87.
Straight from the heart
my best birthday ever is not about the actual birthday or what we did to celebrate. In fact, I would probably forget the year in which it happened if it wasn’t for the gift that my husband gave me. titled “thirty-Four reasons Why I Love you,” the framed list is the best birthday gift I have ever received. six years later, it still brings tears to my eyes and warms my heart. It takes me back to our life at the time: “For playing blocks with Zoey.” “For watching elliot crawl (naked) in the living room.” It makes me laugh: “For putting up with my reading light … and fan.” “For listening to me when I need to talk sports.” It’s sentimental: “For letting me hold your hand at the movies … for waiting for me to finish my popcorn first.” and it’s personal: “For back rubs when it’s you who deserves one.” It’s nothing fancy or expensive. In fact, the sheet of paper that the list is on is cut unevenly and is crooked in the frame. It’s perfect to me, though. I didn’t realize at the time just how special this gift would be in the years to come.
Up, up and away
I have the same birthday as my grandma – and her grandma! Because of that, my grandma and I have always had a special bond. she might even tell you that I was the best birthday present ever – or at least I hope so! my grandma and grandpa live near a park in sioux Falls, south Dakota, where hot air balloons frequently lift off. When I stayed at their house as a kid, grandma and I would sit on the porch together and watch the balloons float up, up and away. she always told me that when I turned 10, we would go on a hot air balloon ride to celebrate. my 10th birthday could not come fast enough. I don’t remember a single present that anyone else gave me that year. grandma’s gift was the only one that mattered. one of the best parts of the day was seeing the excitement on my six siblings’ faces as they watched us take off, then followed us along county roads until we landed in a field a few miles away.

MONEY MATTERS Stay-at-home mom scrutinized for every penny she spends. Dear Sassy Housewife, My husband is so cheap! I’m a stay-at-home mom of two children, and I know money is tight, but he takes it to the worst extreme. He wants to see every receipt and know why every single dollar was spent. Then he questions if I needed to buy certain items. He even asked if I really need deodorant since he hardly sees me sweat. He was never like this until we had kids, and now it’s driving me crazy. I don’t want to be with him sometimes because I don’t like who he has become. Help! Signed, Fiscally Frustrated

Dear Frustrated, First, let me applaud you for sticking to your guns on the deodorant. The world around you is grateful. Secondly, it sounds like this is a trust and communication issue rather than a money issue. Did something happen to trigger this change? You mentioned having children. Most families struggle with the transition from two incomes down to one. Are you aware of your household’s monthly finances? Perhaps the numbers aren’t matching up and he doesn’t know how to fix it. Men hate not being able to fix stuff. You need to have a good old-fashioned chat that doesn’t involve criticism or accusations. Think of it as a “state of our union” discussion. Where are you financially? What is your monthly budget? Set parameters that you both agree on. Perhaps it’s a cash-only system. Or you could sit down every Sunday night and review the money you both spent that week. Money issues are a major cause of divorce. If you can’t arrive at a plan that works for both of you, consider seeking professional help before matters get worse. Worrying about money stinks. It stinks for the majority of the population. My guess is that your hubby is stressing big time over the bottom line. Combine efforts. Two minds collaborating are much better than one mind stressing and the other one complaining.
