M

y three children are ages 10 and younger so we’re years away from college, but college prep educators tell me that it’s never too early to start laying the groundwork. The best time to get a child on track for college is now – even if she is in elementary or middle school. We’re not saying to book a college tour now. But there are subtle ways to encourage learning and creativity in your household, and introduce higher education in the process. In this issue, we get creative about learning. In fact, some suggestions for setting your middle-schooler on the path to college (page 16) don’t even sound like college prep – but they are. And when those good grades start pouring in, we offer a few ways to celebrate success with your child. Turn the page to get started!

What are your Fall faves? Versatility adds fun to any wardrobe.

T

he temperatures in Omaha haven’t dropped much yet, but the calendar says it’s fall – my favorite fashion season. True to form, I’ve got my eye on way more than my closet – or my wallet – can handle. My must-haves: Sunglasses. They’re essential for people like me who have eyes so sensitive that I wear sunglasses when it’s cloudy and raining. AMy I have a GRACe great pair of Tom Ford sunglasses. They were a splurge, but I’ve been wearing them for several years. I feel that it’s

time to take it up a notch with a sassier cat-eye version. Leather shift dress. This dress is easily dressed up or down, and is effortlessly “cool.” Try one in an unexpected color, and pair it with strappy sandals. Switch to knee-high boots when the weather finally catches up with the season. Handbag. Green is my color of choice for a wardrobe that’s mostly black, navy and gray. The handbag I’d die for is $2,000 from Givenchy. It’s time to search for a knockoff, wouldn’t you say? Loafers. They’re perfect with skirts, jeans or your favorite black pants. I love J. Crew’s navy glitter loafers; they’re versatile but still neutral. Schoolboy blazer. I prefer blazers and light jackets over coats for fall and early spring. Layer them, wear them

casually or dress them up; they always look polished. Sweatshirt. From the runways to the aisles at Old Navy, you’ll find sweatshirts with embellishments, screen prints and funky witticisms. Plain styles are haute, too. Rock the look by pairing this timehonored activewear staple with a tuxedo pant, leather mini or wide-legged trouser. Skimmers. Forever 21’s wild geometric-print pant ($22.80) would look dynamite with a denim shirt, tissue tee, cashmere sweater or sweatshirt. Trendy, for sure. But the prices won’t make me feel bad about putting them in the donation pile next year.

These recipes are downright simple and tasty to boot.

T

he arrival of autumn puts us in the mood for a country-themed party. Build yourself a playlist of toe-tappin’ music, fill a roaster with pulled pork from the supermarket deli, whip up a few easy side dishes and dress your tables with checked cloths and bandanas. To celebrate the harvest, ask your guests to bring a pantry item for a local food bank or shelter. You’ll have a downright good feelin’ knowing you’ve done something meaningful for somebody in need.

Mini BlueBeRRy coBBleRs Servings: 4 Fruit Mixture: 1 tablespoon butter, melted 1/4 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice 2 1/2 cups fresh blueberries 1/2 teaspoon sugar for each ramekin Topping: 3/4 cup flour 1/3 cup sugar 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 egg 1/2 teaspoon vanilla 1/4 cup milk 2 tablespoons melted butter

Smashing Pumpkins

Your jack-o’-lantern carving days may not be over, but they’ll certainly be interrupted with these spirited alternatives.

Written and styled by chris christen & heidi hoffman Photos by Kurt a. Keeler

I

f the thought of carving jack-o’-lanterns has you dreading Halloween because of the slimy mess, toss the knife and grab a paintbrush instead. We took our inspiration from a nifty new craft book, “Spooky & Bright: 101 Halloween Ideas” ($12.95, Hearst Books), compiled by the editors of Country Living magazine. They admit to being “completely obsessive about the most exciting night of the year.” Their 144-page spiral-bound book is frightfully fun, devilishly delicious and delightfully easy. In addition to step-by-step instructions for ingenious decorating tricks, the authors throw in recipes for treats to get you and your little goblins ready for Halloween. We experimented with orange, white and black artificial pumpkins from Michaels. Of course, you could use real pumpkins, but we liked the idea of having our creations on display year after year.

Spider What you need Artistic wire, cut in 14-inch lengths Wire cutter What you do 1. Create a spider leg by looping the wire in the shape of a daisy petal. Repeat eight times until you have eight legs. 2. Use the remaining length of wire to fashion the spider’s body simply by wrapping the wire to form a ball in the middle of the legs.

12

Colorful pumpkins What you need Artificial pumpkins (we used 9-inch and 6.5-inch sizes) Painter’s tape Foam brushes in 2-inch and 1-inch sizes Fine-tip artist’s brushes (optional) Acrylic paint, your choice of colors Artistic wire, 1 package (optional)

What you do 1. For a two-tone dipped look, bisect a pumpkin with a strip of tape (angle the tape for a diagonal effect). 2. Use a foam brush to cover one section of your pumpkin with two coats of acrylic paint, allowing 30 minutes of drying time per coat. (Optional: use fine-tip artist’s brushes for a smoother paint stroke). 3. Remove tape and discard. 4. Stop there, or repeat the steps to add another color to your pumpkin. 5. optional: Wrap artistic wire around your thumb multiple times to create a stem. Punch one end of wire into pumpkin to hold stem in place. 1. To form chevron stripes – whether it’s two or several – link short strips of tape to make zigzag patterns, using our photo as a guide. 2. Use a foam brush to cover your pumpkin with two coats of acrylic paint, allowing 30 minutes of drying time per coat. 3. Remove tape and discard. 4. Clean edges with a cotton swab if necessary. 5. If you want the second color to be different than natural pumpkin orange, fill in using a small paintbrush and contrasting acrylic paint as we did for the black and white pumpkin.

Variations experiment with embellishments: 1. Weather-resistant vinyl decals 2. Black lace applied with matte Mod Podge, then sealed with a top coat of Mod Podge 3. Scored curlicues or other motifs using a linoleum cutter 4. Self-adhesive bling

A Gathering of Ghouls What you need Black construction paper, 1 sheet Tacky Glue or glue dots White tissue paper bells, two sizes Cheesecloth, 3 yards What you do 1. Cut ghoulish eyes and mouths from black construction paper. 2. Using Tacky Glue or glue dots, adhere eyes and mouths to white tissue paper bells (available in the wedding supply aisle at craft stores). 3. Drape bells with square sections of cheesecloth. 4. Arrange in groups on a floor or tabletop.

13

D.I.Y. Project

Friendly Ghosts WHAT YOU NEED 2 8-ounce paper cups Masking tape 1 balloon Cheesecloth, about 1 yard Fabric stiffener Black felt, 1 sheet Tacky Glue Fishing line or thin dental floss WHAT YOU DO 1. Set up a workstation by stacking one small paper cup atop another, bottoms matching up. Tape bottoms together for stability. 2. Inflate a small balloon and rest it in the top cup. 3. Cut cheesecloth into pieces that measure about eight inches square, and fill a bowl with fabric stiffener. 4. Soak a piece of cheesecloth in fabric stiffener and immediately drape it over the balloon. Let dry for 10 to 15 minutes. 5. Pop the balloon with a pin to reveal a hardened shape. 6. Cut two tiny circles out of black felt for eyes and affix to the ghost with Tacky Glue. 7. Use your fingers to rough up the end tails of the cheesecloth. 8. Thread fishing line or dental floss through the top of each ghost, securing with a knot to hang. Repeat if desired. NOTE: We stuffed the heads of our ghosts with balls of cotton webbing.

4. Ask questions.

ColleGe PreP 101

Ask instructors how they can help you master a specific skill.

No Slacking Allowed

5. Boost your skills.

Work with a tutor if you need a little more help in one subject than another.

6. Seek recommendations.

25 tips for middle-schoolers

on the path to college.

Ask family and friends who already have college-aged kids how they prepared their child for college.

7. list your interests.

For example, if you enjoy baking, prepare an entry for the county fair.

by josie loza

8. Get involved. 1. request an assessment.

Visit a learning center such as Sylvan or EducationQuest, where you can have an analysis done of your individual strengths and weaknesses. These centers can also determine your needs and help set goals.

2. Define your goals.

Are you trying to keep from failing, or should you challenge yourself to do better?

3. Make a personality match. Determine what kind of teacher you’ve done well with previously. Try to take more classes with him or her.

If you’re a singer, audition for a local choir or musical. Volunteer for a community project.

9. Take difficult classes.

11. Get organized.

Create a system for organizing papers over a long period of time. For some classes, you may need to hold onto certain paperwork for the whole year. Create files for each class and activity, along with volunteer opportunities and college information.

12. Make wise choices.

Too often, middle school students and high school students say they wished someone would have told them not to slack in ninth grade. Don’t be one of them.

13. Help out.

Volunteer for duties and chores around the house. Knowing how to do laundry, cook a few simple meals and clean the bathroom will make you more selfsufficient in college.

Take Algebra 1 and other high schoollevel courses. Many colleges apply these courses to high school grade point averages.

14. Study a second language.

10. Monitor your schedule.

15. Know how to dress.

Shop for a paper planner (not digital since some teachers don’t allow smartphone use in classrooms). Enter assignment due dates and test dates, along with all your activities to keep yourself on track.

Most middle schools do not require a foreign language, but nearly all of them offer classes in Spanish and French.

Dress appropriately for school. Appearance makes a lasting impression.

16. Have a firm handshake.

Think about the people you meet and each time you shake hands; usually, this is the first time two humans touch. So in an instant, we are making an impression. (continued on page 18)

Kristin Ageton of the EducationQuest Foundation offers middle school parents a three-step approach that rarely fails: “Be involved, be involved, be involved.” “Parents are very involved in elementary school,” said Ageton. “As students get older – middle - and high school-age – and become more independent, parents aren’t as involved. But that’s when they need Mom and Dad the most.”

they wished they had done earlier to prepare their child for college.

1. Save more aggressively for the portion of tuition that isn’t covered by scholarships. 2. Apply for financial aid. 3. Ask more questions. 4. Help figure out a career path or major. 5. Visit more colleges.

Keep an eye on progress. An overachiever should be told, “You don’t need to do three different extracurricular activities in middle school in order to get into college.” A less motivated child needs to hear, “Yes, you can go to college, but first that means passing your courses in middle school.”

A national survey released by Harris Interactive found that while 92 percent of seventhand eighth-graders said they were likely to attend college, 68 percent had little or no clue about what they could be doing now to help themselves toward that goal.

Show your middle-schooler the way: 1. Talk about career choices with your child. 2. Check your child’s homework. 3. Be active in school activities and fundraisers. Attend plays and games. 4. Be an advocate for your child.

Dear Sassy Housewife, I am a happily married mother to three wonderful children, ages 7 and younger. My husband is a great guy, but he doesn’t seem very interested in playing with our children. Don’t get me wrong – he takes them out to do things and watches movies with them. But when we are home, he doesn’t seem to engage in any sort of play. How do I get him to be that dad who gets down on the floor and plays? Signed, ‘Playless’ Papa’s Wife Dear Playless, The answer is actually quite simple. You don’t. You can’t get him to be a certain type of dad. He has to be the dad who he feels comfortable being. Anything else might cause resentment and make him feel uncomfortable. With that said, there are ways to get him more engaged that won’t stretch outside of his comfort zone. In my case, I hate playing Barbies. I’m terrible at coming up with scenarios and situations for that blonde bombshell to get into. I can’t

understand how someone can enjoy making Ken and Barbie get married every single day. Yet, my daughter loves it. So honestly, I avoid playing Barbies at all costs. However, I do like crafts and activities. So instead of playing pretend Barbie games, I’ll offer the idea of making Barbie paper dolls or painting pictures that we can put in Barbie’s dream house. My daughter gets excited that it’s still about Barbie, and I get excited that I don’t have to pretend to throw rice at Barbie walking down the aisle. It’s a win-win. The key with your husband is finding out what he enjoys doing. That way he can enjoy sharing that experience with your children and feel like he is still in his comfort zone. Sometimes parents do better with one-on-one time with their children. I know that I am much more engaged if I don’t have to keep track of other little human beings begging for my attention. Since you have three kids, you could try rotating “daddy date nights” to allow Dad and one of your children to do an activity together. It

doesn’t have to be anything that costs money. My daughter loves to camp and so does my husband, so they pitch a tent and camp in our backyard. I prefer to stay inside with a cocktail and reality television. So again, it’s a win for everyone. Don’t make your husband feel bad if he’s not exactly what you imagined in a father for your children. Focus on the positives, and create opportunities to share experiences together. If that still doesn’t work, well then maybe you and the kids could tackle him onto the floor until he yells “mercy.”
