ne of Omaha’s favorite salons is celebrating a milestone this year. Creative Hair Design Salon & Spa has reached 40 years in business. Owner John Mangiameli says credit for this success goes to his employees and customers. “We couldn’t have done it without the people, the employees that make up this business, as well as the clients that have supported us over the last 40 years,” he says. Mangiameli opened Creative Hair Design in 1981 with three employees. Today, he has more than 90 – and most have been with Mangiameli for decades. Second and third generations of Omaha families now are clients. Employees are an integral part of the business, Mangiameli says. “I enjoy being able to take students out of cosmetology school and help mentor and develop their skills,” he says. And many employees of Creative Hair Design continue to learn new skills on the job. “Our technicians are continuously updating their artistic and technical skills with the latest knowledge in their individual fields of expertise,” he said. The 17,000-square-foot facility includes a 5,000-square-foot second-floor spa. “Our luxurious, private spa provides an

Creative Hair Design took home several Omaha’s Choice Awards again this year, including first place for hair salon, day spa, men’s haircut & shave and nail salon, as well as a win for massage therapy. “Being named Omaha’s Choice lets the consumer know that we consistently provide high quality services and products to our clients,” he says. “We want to thank the community for voting us No. 1 in Omaha.”

CHANGING THE WAY YOU RIDE For Speedy Pete’s E-bikes in Lincoln, freedom, fun and fitness are keys to success

t was a flat tire on his daughter’s bike that took Doug Long from selling hammers and ladders to selling freedom, fun and fitness. While waiting at a bike shop for the tire’s repair, Long tried out an electric bike in the cycle shop and was smitten. “I had an incredible, immediate reaction to it,” said Long, then owner of QP Ace Hardware in Lincoln. “I decided to incorporate a couple e-bikes in our hardware store. People would walk in – ‘Oooh, what’s this?’ they’d say. They would take it out to try on the nearby trail or the church parking lot next door and come back to buy it.” Seeing the customers’ reactions were the same as his, Long decided to preach to the masses. After selling their hardware stores in 2020, Doug and his wife, Lisa, were able to focus on Speedy Pete’s with a stand-alone location, the region’s largest e-bike shop. (Lisa’s late father, Pete, was an original owner of the hardware store, so the name was an homage to him.) Long said many of his customers are in their mid-50s and older. Many haven’t been on a bike in years – maybe decades. “There’s a little bit of a learning curve, since many got away from riding,” he said. “But once they go, they find that they’re spending more time on this than they ever did on a bike before.” E-bikes are available in two styles, either driven from a rear hub or with a mid-drive bike, Long said. “A rear hub is more of an entry-level bike,” he explained. “When you get on it, you’ll feel more of a ‘push.’ For a mid-drive, it’s more of your body working with the machine – it’s like your legs became super-charged.” A frequent comment or concern is that having electric assist eliminates much of the exercise benefit from a bike. Long has noticed many couples – especially empty-nesters – will often buy two e-bikes, as this becomes a new shared activity

for the couple. “They find out they can go much further and see much more together,” he said. Speedy Pete’s is kind of a superstore, with the opportunity to see and sample 11 different e-bike makes under one roof. That lineup brings more than just Nebraskans to the shop at 27th and Capitol Parkway in Lincoln. “We have people from Kansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Colorado and even further,” Long said, “and one guy even flew in from Louisiana to check out a bike.” Speedy Pete’s offers rentals for those wanting to try before buying and full services for repairs and accessories, even for the earliest ’80s-era e-bikes with the heavy lead-cell batteries, used before the much-lighter lithium ion and magnesium batteries of today. E-bike prices range from under $1,000 to $5,000 and more, with the average purchase around $2,500. And, the store offers free delivery to the Omaha metro area. “Most people have an idea of what they want when they come in because they’ve done their research, whether it’s a folding bike, a mountain bike, or a fat-tire bike,” he said. “But the key ingredient is being able to ride before you buy. Fit and comfort is critical in any bike purchase.”

ustomers keep coming back to Fernando’s two Omaha locations, and their owners know why. “We have loyal customers who love our service, quality and reasonably priced menu,” says Mitch Tempus, who with his wife, Carole, own and work daily in their restaurants. The reasons for their customers’ loyalty start with Fernando’s menu, which features a long list of Sonoran-style Mexican items made daily from scratch with the freshest of ingredients. Next comes the way Fernando’s prepares its entrées: Smothered with sauce and cheese and baked in 500-degree temperatures. “They’re cheesy, gooey goodness,” Tempus says. And don’t forget the Fernando’s House Margarita, voted in the top 3 in the 2021 Omaha Choice Awards, he adds. Customers also mention the family-friendly atmosphere and consistency they find at each location – 75th and Pacific Streets and near 114th Street and West Dodge Road. “We’re a casual restaurant and bar,” Tempus says. “We don’t stay open late. We don’t attract the crazy crowd. We love kids and we love it when families come in.” Then he adds another reason – which he calls the most important

one – to the list: “Our customers keep coming back because we have great employees. Our customers ask for them by name. They know our servers, the bartenders and who’s working in the kitchen.” Mitch and Carole Tempus – a self-described “food service family” – bought the restaurants four years ago. They noted that some staff have been with Fernando’s since the 114th Street location opened in 1993, followed by the

Pacific Street location – the one with the table on its roof – several years later. Then, Tempus keeps going with his list. Fernando’s matches its fresh pico de gallo with flour tortilla chips. They make a popular combination, he said. “We do offer corn chips, but our customers want our flour ones.” Look no further than Fernando’s menu for another customer favorite: the No. 2 combination plate, which carries the title “Fernando’s

Favorite.” The No. 2 comes with an enchilada (beef, chicken or seafood) and one taco (beef or chicken) with a side of beans and rice. Recent reviews carried on the restaurant’s website – fernandosomaha.com – affirm the combination plate’s lofty status: “...my favorite is definitely Fernando’s favorite! Shredded chicken! Smothered on the side! Mild sauce for my husband and hot sauce for me! And I don’t want

anything light! I’ll want full calorie! You guys are the best!” “The #2 plate is always my favorite! Nice variety and it always comes steaming hot!” “The Fernando’s Favorite is my go-to. I get the taco with ground beef and a chicken enchilada with the white sauce, and it is consistently delicious.” Tempus said Fernando’s customers remained loyal – even when the pandemic meant no dine-in service. Fernando’s closed for a day, pivoted and focused on carryout service. Staples – for example, queso blanco dip, artichoke spinach dip and chips – remained available at Hy-Vee grocery stores. Now, Fernando’s is back to business as usual and its staff of 80, many of whom were furloughed during the pandemic, are back at work. “We made it through and we’re blessed.” One final reason for customer loyalty: the Tootsie Roll Pops given to customers before they leave. “People ask for them – and we’re happy to hand them out.”

Instead, the washing equipment moves around the vehicle. “If you can park your car in your garage, you can use our automatics,” he says. Once parked, the car wash creates a unique 3D scan of your vehicle. This scan allows the equipment to wash those hardto-reach spots that may be missed by other washes. The state-of-the art facility is not only smarter, but cleaner and greener, he says. High-tech equipment and biodegradable soaps help to keep the facility clean. In turn, the wash requires less energy and uses less water than other car washes. Keeping a car clean in Omaha is not easy, Barker says. Omaha has challenging weather, and different soaps are recommended for different seasons, Barker says. “During times of bad weather, we get a chance to do a thorough cleaning of our bays,” he says. “We love it when our customers compliment us on our clean facilities.” IQ Car Wash’s Omaha location opened in 2020, just as the pandemic began. “Traffic was only 25% of what we expected,” Barker says. “But we just stayed true to our goal of being the cleanest and friendliest car wash in town.” Despite the challenges of the first year, IQ Car Wash found loyal customers in Omaha by word of mouth in its first year, and received first place in the car wash category in the 2021 Omaha’s Choice Awards, as chosen by World-Herald readers. “Winning an Omaha’s Choice Award is extremely satisfying since we are the ‘new kid on the block,’” Barker says. “It means our facilities and our employees are very customer friendly.” “Our employees are here to help you with any questions you have, not to sell you anything.”

f it’s date night, look for Nick and Crystal Crites at Infinite Loop, competing in virtual boxing matches or avoiding zombies that have taken over Los Angeles. If one of their daughters is celebrating a birthday, same place, bigger crowd — and playing virtual reality offerings geared to a younger crowd. Infinite Loop, a virtual reality arcade at 98th Street and Giles Road in La Vista that opened in 2018 and expanded a year later, features more than 50 games, including more than 20 multiplayer ones. Players can voice chat via wireless headsets – even if they are playing different games at different stations. Crystal looks to virtual box whenever she visits. “It’s just for fun, but I burn a lot of calories. I know I do. I check my workout watch.” Nick prefers “LA Deadzone,” in which players partner to escape a virtual Los Angeles overrun with the undead. “He loves it, but I get a bit scared.” They’re also likely to spend time on a racing simulator. “Anyone who goes will find something they love,” Crystal says. Basically, there’s something for everyone, which is the purpose behind Infinite Loop, says owner Jeremiah Maddock. “Virtual reality is such an immersive experience that everyone finds something to enjoy.” It may be walking around on a sunken ship for a close encounter with a giant blue whale. Or it may be visiting Paris in Google Earth. “Playing with friends or family is an unforgettable experience,” he says. Jason Schwarz has taken that virtual walk under the ocean. For those who have the basics down, competitive shooting offers a challenge and a bit of fun, Ulrich says. “While much of the training we do is defensive in nature, we love introducing shooters to the recreational side,” she says. “We offer traditional bullseye shoots, steel targets, leagues and bowling pin competitions. We even have ‘pumpkin carving’ contests in October.” 12

That’s all Shandy Thorell had when she first dreamed of opening a bakery. “We were absolutely broke,” Thorell says. “We had no money, not even for groceries for our kids.” In the six and a half years since her dream began, with the baking knowledge passed down from her mother and grandmother, Thorell has transformed her dream into a reality: Shandy’s Bakery. Thorell uses heritage recipes with a few key ingredients: Swedish love and personality. “I put in the same love our grandmothers used when they baked the same recipes,” she says. “It gives people good memories, as well as excites the taste buds.” Shandy’s Bakery offers a

With help from her family, she sold warm bread from a wagon on the weekends. The next stop was a presence at local farmers markets. Finally, in 2018, Thorell opened a storefront. Shandy’s Bakery received first place in this year’s Omaha’s Choice Awards, a recognition that validates her years of effort, she

says. “I have sacrificed a lot to grow this business, and to win this kind of award just shows me that dreams do come true.” Owning a bakery is all about customer relationships and quality products, Thorell says. “Getting to know my customers and hearing how my bread is used to touch lives makes the job worthwhile,” she says. “Seeing God work in those relationships is amazing.” Despite the challenges for local businesses in the past year, Shandy’s Bakery has thrived. “People need their comfort food during times of hardship and trial. I provided what they needed and earned a spot as another baker in the family heritage.”
