FRIENDLY COMPETITION The couple met through a mutual friend at a high school speech tournament, at which Rachael’s alma mater, Bellevue West, and Robert’s alma mater, Papillion-La Vista, were competing against each other. “It’s funny because we were both nerdy speech kids,” Rachael recalls. FAMILY ROOTS RUN DEEP Robert’s great-great-great-grandfather started a jewelry store in Pocatello, Idaho, which is where the couple’s rings and gifts to each other (a watch for her and cuff links for him) came from. Some of his other family members own the Molinelli Vineyards in Italy, which provided wine for the reception. ‘SWEET’ MEMORIES As a tribute to Robert’s Italian heritage, a cookie buffet was featured at the reception. Each type of cookie was labeled with the name of the family member who baked it, and his or her wedding pictures served as the backdrop for the buffet. In case guests didn’t get enough of the sweet treats, their favors were bags of cookies – and recipes so they could make more at home. S’MORES, ANYONE? The rehearsal dinner took place at Bellevue Berry Farm and Pumpkin Ranch. One-hundred guests took a hayrack ride, and then huddled together around a bonfire. NOT JUST ANY SHIRT Rachael arranged to have her bridesmaids wear their dads’ dress shirts over their dresses while they got ready for the wedding. The bridesmaids’ initials were embroidered on the shirts. GROOM’S ONE REQUEST He didn’t want to wear pink, which was the predominant color in the wedding. He got away with a lime green bow tie (an accent color) instead.

DON’T SPILL! The couple forgot to eat at their reception since they were socializing and “caught up in the moment,” so they grabbed fast food afterward. “We sat in our hotel room in our wedding attire and just ate and ate!” PROPOSAL, TAKE FOUR Take one: Johnny planned to surprise Sara with the ring in the pocket of a coat that she wanted for her birthday, but then she changed her mind and didn't want a new coat. Take two: Johnny planned to surprise Sara with the ring and breakfast in bed upstairs in their home, but she was taking her time downstairs and wouldn’t go back upstairs. Take three: Johnny asked her to come upstairs so she could help him pick out a shirt, but she told him to look in the dryer instead. Take four: Finally, he abruptly told her to come upstairs and he proposed right then and there! SHE WAS IN NO HURRY The couple met at a bar in Dundee, but Johnny courted Sara for five months before she would go out with him. IT WORKED Sara gave Johnny a groom’s survival kit as a wedding gift. It included socks to prevent “cold feet”; a small bottle of his favorite liquor to calm his nerves; mints for a “fresh” kiss; and Ring Pops “in case he forgot the essentials.”

SO MUCH BETTER THAN BURGERS Vanessa thought they were heading to a new burger joint one evening when Bryan “happened” to pass by the Joslyn Art Museum. He proposed in the sculpture garden, and “a huge smile came across my face,” Vanessa says. “Then the tears started. I gave him the biggest hug in the world and never wanted to let go.” CLOSE CALL About 30 minutes before they were scheduled to take pictures on their wedding day, Bryan’s incision from a recent abdominal surgery split open. He was OK, but he did see the doctor the next day! STARBURST, ANYONE? Bryan and Vanessa gave each other Starbursts to say “I love you” while they were dating. They incorporated the candy into their dessert table so “our little insider secret was there for everyone to ponder.” HOMEMADE FUN Vanessa made the chalkboards and the cake topper, and she decorated the cake herself. She and her bridesmaids arranged the flowers, including the bouquets and boutonnieres. And she and her sister made the table runners and desserts, with help from Bryan’s mom. Vanessa has some “chilling” advice for future brides who do their own flowers: “Make sure that your fridge isn’t too cold. You could accidentally freeze your mother-in-law’s corsage!”

SWEET MOMENT For the “first look” photo, Jason waited around a corner of a building and Jennifer came up behind him. “He turned, and I saw tears welling up in his eyes. That was the moment when I knew he was absolutely in love. There were no ‘cold feet,’ no hesitation in saying forever.” ‘SAUCY’ MESSAGE The couple came across a Taco Bell sauce packet that had the words “Will you marry me?” printed on it when they were having lunch one day, and it has been an inside joke ever since. The joke was on Jason on their wedding day when Jennifer’s daughter, Sophia, handed a sauce packet to him just as Jennifer started walking down the aisle. His reaction was laughter – and tears. TALK ABOUT MULTIPURPOSE Jennifer and Jason made centerpieces out of wine bottle bottoms. They placed candles underneath each bottle, and adhered a picture of themselves, the dinner menu, a table number and a thank-you note to guests. YOU CAN ALWAYS COUNT ON FRIENDS The couple struggled with the thought of finding someone to officiate their wedding. “We wanted someone who we felt was important in our lives and who truly knew us and knew the love we feel for each other,” the bride says. A close friend became ordained online at ulc.org in time for the wedding.

A ‘ROCKY’ START The couple and their friends planned a night out at a restaurant in Laguna Beach, Calif. Elizabeth thought the reason for the occasion was for a friend, who was visiting from Lincoln, Neb., to experience a sunset dinner, but Austin had a more grand plan in mind. After dinner, he took Elizabeth to a huge rock on the beach and proposed at the top. “Little did I know that there were two photographers capturing the whole thing,” she says. SAY IT IN SONG The entire wedding party sang Michael Bolton’s “How Can We Be Lovers” to guests at the reception. The song is a joke between the groom and one of the groomsmen, and they always play it when they see each other. “It was hilarious seeing everyone join in on such a silly song,” Elizabeth says. IT’S NEBRASKA, AFTER ALL It snowed on their wedding day, and the reception was in a large, white circular room. It felt like they were inside a snow globe or a winter wonderland, the bride says. BEST ADVICE To make sure that the wedding was about the couple’s love for each other and not pleasing everyone else. “It’s the one day that a couple gets for themselves to share their love with all of those who love them the most.”

05.26.13 St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, Omaha; Bella Terre Vineyard & Reception Hall, Glenwood, Iowa NOT JUST ANY DATE It’s a Greek tradition to be married on a Sunday, and having the wedding on Memorial Day weekend made it convenient for guests. The wedding also had to occur after soccer season since Demetri is the assistant coach of a high school soccer team. Melissa came out ahead on the date as well. May is prime peony season, and she wanted to incorporate peonies into her floral arrangements. GREECE MEETS NORTH BEND, NEB. Demetri is from Athens, Greece, and Melissa is from North Bend, so they incorporated both of their traditions into the ceremony. They had a traditional wedding cake plus a table of homemade Greek desserts, and country swing dancing mixed in with Greek line dances. DELAYED REACTION Melissa and Demetri were in Kansas City, Mo., for a Kansas City Chiefs game, and they stopped at their hotel. Melissa turned around to find Demetri down on one knee with a ring in his hands. “But the ring itself was in a box within a box wrapped up with wrapping paper and a bow,” she says. “So after undoing all of that, he asked me to marry him and of course I said yes!” GO EASY ON THE BIRDSEED “It was in our hair, under my dress, weaved in the lace (I still have some stuck in there) and stuck in our shoes. We saw Demetri’s tiniest little old lady aunt ‘baseball-pitching’ it at us from the bottom of the church stairs.”

NOT EXACTLY LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT The couple met at work, and they didn’t get along at first. But later on, they realized that there was “more to the other person than meets the eye,” Sunisha says. MOVE OVER, PRINCE Charles gave the ring bearer some Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle swords as a gift. On the day of the wedding, the flower girl, who loves Disney princesses, asked the ring bearer if he would be her prince. The ring bearer replied, “No because I’m a ninja!” ‘CULTURAL MELTING POT’ The bride refers to their wedding as a “cultural melting pot” since it featured Thai, Indian and Mexican traditions. Guests traveled from Thailand, New Zealand, India, Washington, D.C., Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, New York, Minnesota and Missouri. TOUCHING TRIBUTE Charles's close friend and groomsman died in a plane accident soon after he was asked to be in the wedding. Charles and Sunisha kept his spirit alive by asking each groomsman to place a lit candle in front of a picture of him as they walked down the aisle. His family members, who were among the guests at the wedding, were touched by the gesture. WHAT HE GAVE HER It’s a Mexican tradition (Charles is Mexican and Irish) for the groom to give his future wife gold coins. It’s an Indian tradition (Sunisha was born in India) for the bride’s family to give the groom gold. So her family gave him gold chains, gold bracelets and gold bullion.

EVERYONE WAS A GUEST The couple wanted a “low key and fun gathering for our family and friends,” so they chose not to have bridesmaids or groomsmen. EGGS, ANYONE? The Sunday brunch wedding was going to be held outdoors. Rain brought the wedding inside, but “It was the exact wedding we wanted. Our family and friends were able to surround us and share the moment in a small, intimate way.” FOUR-LEGGED SPECIAL GUEST Angie’s uncle drove from Palm Desert, Calif., so he could bring his mutt, Jack, with him to the wedding. The dog was not only a wonderful guest, Angie says, but popular at the Magnolia Hotel Omaha. The kids especially loved having him around. UNFORGETTABLE MOMENT The reception ended at 3 p.m., and that evening the couple ran into some of their guests on the hotel’s outdoor patio. They ate cookies, talked about the wedding and shared family memories. QUITE THE TRAVELER Ryan proposed on Angie’s birthday, but the Cubic Zirconia ring he gave her was just a stand-in. The original was impossible to resize, so the designer retooled it – in Belgium. The ring traveled to the designer’s headquarters in New Jersey next. But then Hurricane Sandy happened … It ended up on Angie’s finger in time for the wedding.

NOT JUST ANY DATE The couple’s wedding date was significant for both practical and sentimental reasons: Practical because hotels and flights were inexpensive at that time of year; and sentimental because it was a family member’s birthday, it was the weekend before Brett’s family’s annual 4th of July party – and it was exactly two-and-a-half years after the couple met. IT’S ALL ABOUT TIMING Although Kristin and Brett attended Wayne State College at the same time and Kristin’s sorority sister dated and eventually married Brett’s roommate, they did not meet until after college. They were introduced by mutual friends at a birthday party. THE PIZZA COULD WAIT Brett insisted that he and Kristin go out for pizza on the night of his proposal, only he had supposedly forgotten his wallet and needed to get it from his cousin at Bayliss Park. Even though Kristin was suspicious that something was up, “everything got fuzzy” when he bent down on one knee. “Brett says I knocked him over when I said yes, but I don’t remember that.” They had pizza afterward. LAUGHTER … Brett put Kristin’s ring on incorrectly during the ceremony, so she had to take it off and explain to him – and unintentionally to all of their guests – how to put it on the right way (She didn’t think the microphone was turned up loud enough for everyone to hear her). AND TEARS After the couple had their first look, they had a first look with Kristin’s dad. “We were all crying, and the photographer captured it perfectly,” Kristin says. “My mom walked in seconds later to add to the tears.” HEARTFELT NOTES In their vows, Kristin wrote that she promised to always steal Brett’s French fries, and he wrote about the couple’s favorite memories. They also wrote letters to each other right before their first look. The letters are now framed and displayed in their home.

NO BETTER DISTRACTION Geneva was nervous that she would trip on her dress – until she saw Jay for the first time. “I was so happy and excited to marry him that tripping wasn’t my main thought anymore. He looked so handsome!” JUST THE RIGHT WORDS Geneva called her dad while she was getting ready for the ceremony and she told him she was nervous. He told her not to worry about anything. It was her day and he loved her. “My dad always knows what to say,” she says. TWEET, TWEET The couple’s birdcage and lovebird theme was carried through to the cake, card holder and the bride’s veil. She says she loved having a theme, but she didn’t go overboard. GROOM’S ONE REQUEST For the men to wear suspenders. Geneva admits to not being totally into the idea – until she saw the men wearing them. “They all looked great and it was so much fun!” COMFORT WINS Geneva gave her bridesmaids sparkly grey clutches with homemade pink name tags attached. She bought matching shoes for herself to wear at the reception, but she decided to go barefoot all evening.

THEY MET IN DIAPERS Layne and Luke grew up in the same church. In fact, Luke’s mom taught Layne at Sunday school. But the couple didn’t connect until after high school through mutual friends. HAD SHE KNOWN ... Layne reluctantly agreed to look at what she thought was just another one of Luke’s camera gadgets, when it was actually his proposal! Luke talked about “lovey-dovey stuff” in a video. At the end he said, “I just have one question to ask you so please turn around.” And there he was down on one knee. NOT YOUR TYPICAL WALK DOWN THE AISLE Luke was diagnosed with chronic Lyme disease two years ago. A year before the wedding, he was using a walker and a wheelchair. But on their wedding day, he was able to not only walk down the aisle without assistance, but dance with Layne for their first dance. “With our love for each other, our amazing families and our faith in the Lord above, we have been able to not only get through some difficult times, but help others dealing with Lyme disease as well,” Layne says. SPEAKING OF HELPING OTHERS ... In lieu of the Dollar Dance, the couple donated money to a Lyme disease organization. On every table at the reception was a card explaining the couple’s story, Luke’s battle with the disease and specifically what the guests’ donations were going toward. The couple donated more than $500 to the organization.

MORE THAN A KISS THIS TIME The clock tower on the ConAgra Foods grounds has been special to the couple since their first date when they stopped there to give each other a kiss. On the night of his proposal, Tanner leaned in to give Denise a kiss under the same clock tower, only “This kiss was very different and lasted for awhile, which is unlike him,” Denise says. Then he asked her to marry him, and he had a dozen roses waiting for her in his car. THERE IN SPIRIT It rained while the couple was saying their vows at their outdoor ceremony, but then it stopped as soon as they were finished. “It gave us both goose bumps just knowing that our family members up in heaven were there with us at that moment,” she says. “It was an incredible feeling, and the memory will last forever.” UNIQUE UNION Denise made a rope to tie her and Tanner’s hands together as one during the ceremony. “As our maid of honor and best man tied our hands together and made a permanent knot that will never be undone, our mothers stood beside us and read a poem,” the bride says. “This was such a unique unity ritual, and we made it our own. I absolutely loved it!” SHE WISHES SHE COULD HAVE … “Hit a slow-motion button to take more time in some of the precious moments from that day.”
