The MBA has been, and remains, maintained by a full board of volunteers, all with a common passion for doing the best for Millard. • As an organization, it strives to continually improve and connect the business community and members to each other while sharing knowledge and expertise that will benefit the entire community.

early 50 years after the annexation of Millard by Omaha, people continue to identify Millard as a unique community set within the greater Omaha metropolitan area. Just as Florence, Dundee and Benson retain some element of identity from their history as independent townships, Millard maintains a small-town feel in many ways. It was a feeling of community that the Millard Business Association Steering Committee tapped into when it organized. The 13 members of the committee had their hands full determining how to draft bylaws and attain nonprofit status. In the summer of 2003, the MBA held its first business social at Boulder Creek. An initial goal was 50 members by the first business social. More than 100 people attended, excited at the idea of networking with other Millard-area business professionals. In September 2003, the MBA held its first annual meeting. In the years since that first social, membership has grown to more than 350 members, representing virtually every type of company. The growth the MBA has experienced gives the organization opportunities to satisfy its core objectives: • Promote, preserve and enhance Millard-area commerce. • Develop active business-to-business networking among members. • Provide business-specific educational opportunities to members. • Provide benevolent community programs. “We’ve come a long way in commitment. We have an identity now. It took growth to do that. I had no clue how long it would last. We have a voice in the community,” said Steve Andersen of Steve Andersen Electrical Contractors. Andersen co-founded the MBA. “We’ve become a very organized group of local business owners that have networking in mind, but we have a strong commitment to the community and a desire to give back to the community.”

s much as I am humbled and honored, I am equally as excited and privileged to serve as president-elect of the Millard Business Association. In 2020, we need to continue to build upon the foundation laid by past board members. We also need to

Networking, fundraising keep MBYP members connected with community

illard Business Young Professionals has only been up and running for about a year, but already the group is planning its second annual fundraiser. Ashley O’Neal, president of MBYP, said the Women’s Empowerment Fashion Show is set for May 13. Planning began shortly after the first show last June. Proceeds from ticket sales will go toward a school program recommended by the Millard Public Schools Foundation. The fashion show is just one way MBYP is making a difference in the community. Todd Baumbach, past president of Millard Business Association, helped get the young professionals group started in early 2019, partly to “shadow big brother,” to learn about leadership, job coaching and mentoring. “At our first meeting, we had a speaker who talked about what it’s like to be on a board,” said Baumbach, one of six MBYP board members. He said he saw a need to groom young professionals in Millard to be leaders, specifically in the MBA.

Membership in the MBYP is $50 a year and allows a member to participate in any MBYP activities. A full MBA membership is $130 per year and includes access to all MBA and MBYP activities, he said. Baumbach said he encourages people to join the MBA for access to “endless events” versus fewer than 10 MBYPonly events throughout the year. O’Neal, marketing director for SignIT, said the group is actively recruiting and getting the word out about how MBYP is different from other young professional groups in the Omaha area. “We just want to find our identity,” she said. Although members do not need to work or live in Millard, O’Neal said she wants to “show people that

Millard is a great place to be a young professional.” According to the MBA website, “The Millard Young Professionals Group (MBYP) is a thriving new organization that connects a diverse group of young professionals across the Millard area. The goal of this group is to create a force that will both strengthen and grow Millard and the young professional community as we attract even more young professionals to live, work, play and stay in Millard, Nebraska.” Networking is a priority of MBYP, and one way the group is fulfilling that objective is by participating in Table for 10. The concept is that 10 different people meet at a restaurant or other location every month to socialize and learn from each other. MBYP is also involved in business after-hours events, the Millard Business Association Expo and the Ribstock MBA BBQ Festival, at which they sponsor a cornhole tournament. Food Bank for the Heartland / Millard Business Community Foundation MILLARD BUSINESS COMMUNITY FOUNDATION PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Ribstock helps fund a community need

he Millard Business Association partnered with Food Bank for the Heartland during the 2019 Ribstock festival. The fundraising barbecue event raised money for charity with $10,000 going to the Food Bank. Approximately one in six kids in Nebraska and western Iowa is food insecure, and many do not have regular access to the meals they need to be healthy. The Food Bank provides food to at-risk children, low-income families, seniors on fixed income, struggling veterans, the working poor, those impacted by the 2019 flooding and others who need emergency or supplemental meals through nearly 600 partner organizations in Nebraska and western Iowa. Last year, the Food Bank distributed more than 23 million meals.

IMPACT IN THE MILLARD AREA

Food Bank for the Heartland works closely with Millard Public Schools (MPS) to support children and families within the district who are

food insecure. Chronically hungry students are identified by staff members at local elementary schools. Food Bank for the Heartland supplies backpacks filled with food for those children to take home on Friday afternoons. Each pack contains two breakfast cereal bowls, two entrees, two shelf-stable milk cartons, one juice and one fruit pouch. MPS is provided 280 backpacks per week. Backpacks, however, are not enough to address the needs for food insecure families in MPS. To help stem the tide, the Food Bank delivers about 7,000 pounds of food for a schoolbased mobile partry held monthly on the third Thursday at the Ron Witt Support Services building. This mobile pantry services approximately 80 families per month (or roughly 387 individuals). The one-day distribution is free and offers pasta, tomato sauce, peanut butter, rice, soup and other shelf-stable products along with fresh produce (such as sweet potatoes, apples, carrots and onions), bakery items and milk.

am honored to serve as president of the Millard Business Community Foundation (MBCF). In 2010, I was president-elect of the Millard Business Association and part of the team that established the MBCF. The growth of the scholarship program and Project Wee Care were the reasons the MBA board felt it was time to take this step. The foundation — the philanthropic arm of the MBA — has made it possible to increase our partnerships with area organizations, churches, schools and businesses as we join together to help our neighbors in need. We’re reaching more Millard students by partnering with the Millard Public Schools Partners in Education program and promoting their goals of #BeKind. Additionally, through Project Wee Care, we’re able to offer more opportunities for our students to learn the value of volunteering and helping others. Since 2003, the foundation has awarded $77,000 in scholarships to Millard and Skutt Catholic graduates. We’ve also helped increase the number of $1,000 scholarships to six per year. Project Wee Care has touched the lives of more than 2,517 Millard families in need. The program also supports Millard School’s ELC summer school program by providing a grant for school supplies so students are prepared for the new school year each fall. In spring 2019, when many of our neighbors were affected by flooding, the Millard Business Community Foundation Board reached out to the Millard Public Schools administration to identify employees in need of disaster assistance. Project Wee Care, as a result, helped four Millard Public Schools employees and their families who had been displaced from their homes. It has also been an honor to serve on the Millard Superintendent Service Advisory Committee and on the steering committee representing the MBCF, the MBA, and PWC since 2014. This has given us amazing opportunities to partner with other nonprofits that support our Millard students and grow our reach within the Millard community. Each year I am amazed at the truly great volunteers and supporters of the MBCF, the MBA, and our programs. A person who volunteers because it is in their heart to help others is the best volunteer to have. These volunteers and achievements show that Millard is a great place to live and do business. Providing food, clothing and smiles

ince 2006, Project Wee Care — a 100% volunteer effort — has provided food, clothing and gifts to a growing number of families in the Millard area who might not otherwise have a happy holiday. PWC partners with Millard Business Association members, Millard Public Schools’ staff and students, local service organizations, churches and residents to help needy families. “We are all volunteers,” said Paula Teetor, codirector of Project Wee Care with Jennifer Ensz. “It’s our desire to make our community better. There are many reasons that people need help, and we are so fortunate to live in a community where we can come together to be there for our neighbors.” Many people don’t realize the degree of need for programs like PWC in Millard, Teetor said. To date, PWC has given a hand up to more than 13,400 people through referrals from 35 Millard Public Schools. During the first year of outreach, Project Wee Care served 22 families. In 2019, 299 families (1,281 people) benefited. In the Millard Schools, free- and reduced-lunch applications for the 20182019 school year rose, with

nearly 23% of families now qualifying for the program. Montclair Elementary counselor Terry Connor Dischler shared this comment from an appreciative parent: “Thanks so much for the Christmas gifts. ... Your gifts are very helpful and each kid is happy, to say the least.” Bryan Elementary counselor Amy Kopanic Falter said one parent reported that they didn’t know what they would have done without the program. The PWC team was inspired to put together a booklet of recipes for families after Jill Anderson, Central Middle School social worker, received an email from a parent saying, “I just wanted to say thank you, again, for everything you have done for us this year. I ... was overwhelmed with the generosity and kindness of everyone.” The parent went on to list meals the family would enjoy with the donated grocery items.

At PWC’s North Pole, children got to visit with Santa and have their picture taken with him. They also got to pick out a gift for their parents to open on Christmas morning. “As you can imagine, each year PWC volunteers share many smiles, laughs, and hugs with the families we reach and with fellow volunteers,” Teetor said. “Our hearts are happy as we know that we have made a difference for so many. Not only have we helped many families by filling some of their needs but we have also given our children, the future leaders, the opportunity to volunteer and learn by example,” Teetor said. Often when PWC families get back on their feet, they come back to help others. “Every year we have had a family give back to the program in some way — either donating their time, sponsoring a family or giving a percentage of their proceeds from their business,” Teetor said.

Annual fundraiser continues to grow with move to Stinson Park

wice as many people attended the Ribstock MBA BBQ Festival last year than in 2018, raising the bar for the eighth annual competition July 25. Millard Business Association’s largest fundraiser is expected to be even bigger in its second year at Stinson Park in Aksarben Village. “We doubled our attendance with the move to Stinson,” said David Engelmeyer, committee chair. Previously, Ribstock was hosted by Super Saver in Millard. About 2,500 people attended Ribstock 2018 compared to 5,500 in 2019, according to Engelmeyer, a financial planner who has been involved with Ribstock since inception. It’s a lot of work, he said, but it’s all worthwhile because of the great local causes the festival supports. Among them: • Food Bank for the Heartland — and more specifically the backpack

program which provides meals to kids in Millard. • Project Wee Care, an initiative that provides meals, clothes and toiletry items to children in need, as well as gifts for their parents, at Christmas.

• Millard-area students in need of scholarships. Six $1,000 scholarships are awarded each year to seniors from Millard South, Millard North, Millard West and Skutt Catholic high schools. There also are two “We Are All Patriots” awards to students who have overcome adversity. Ribstock, of course, wouldn’t be possible without the ribs. Engelmeyer, who volunteers with his father, Kenny, said the festival will include at least 10 local smokers, all competing for the People’s Choice Award. MBA provides 10 racks of ribs to prepare, he said. Attendees can buy a $10 sampling card with four smokers chosen at random. After tasting all four samples, they’re entitled to vote for their favorite, Engelmeyer said. The top three winners will be announced that evening. Admission to Ribstock is free. to secure sponsors and vendors, Engelmeyer said. For the first six years, Ribstock was held at Super Saver, which was also the event’s top sponsor. “Super Saver has been a great sponsor since day one,” said Engelmeyer. When Engelmeyer inquired about relocating Ribstock to Stinson Park, the weekend he wanted was the only one available. “It couldn’t have worked out any better for us. We were pretty ecstatic.” Besides the food, entertainment is also a big draw at Ribstock. Joystick, a pop-rock band from Omaha, will take the stage in the evening to play

music from the 1970s to present. Other activities include face painting, a photo booth and a shaved ice truck. The Millard Business Young Professionals group will sponsor a cornhole tournament in the afternoon, as well. An added bonus is the Pick-a-Pooch Pet Expo at nearby Baxter Arena on July 25 and 26. Engelmeyer said the two events go hand-in-hand because not only is Ribstock family-friendly, but it’s dogfriendly, too. he Millard Business Association (MBA), along with the Millard Business Community Foundation (MBCF), works year-round to promote and preserve the Millard business community and members of our organization. The 16th Annual Awards celebration was held Feb. 28, 2019, at Champions Run with an “Emerald City in Millard” theme. More than 200 guests and dignitaries attended. The evening began with a cocktail hour, networking and silent auction. After dinner the MBCF presented six Millard-area graduating high school seniors with $1,000 college scholarships.

Emma held many leadership roles during her years at Millard North, both in school and in her community. She was a member of National Honor Society and Latin and Spanish National Honor Societies, held positions such as a Mustang Mentor, student leader for her church’s mission trips and vacation Bible school, and found time to volunteer at a studio offering dance and voice. She has been a member of the Community Chorus for Christmas with the Omaha Symphony since she was in eighth grade. Emma attends Rockhurst University, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in international business and Spanish with a focus in pre-law studies. She plans to earn a master’s of business administration by her fifth year. Emma says, “All of these strategies will assist me in achieving my educational and professional goals. Ultimately, they will help me ... in serving others and making a difference in their lives.”

Cole believes that relationships are the cornerstone of all high school experiences. He balanced those relationships through involvement in National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, campus ministry, track and field, cross country, basketball and football. Cole received numerous awards such as the Paul Troupe Scholarship Award, Academic All-Conference in track and field and cross country, Outstanding Christian Service Award and Academic Decathlon Scholarship. Cole has known since sixth grade that he wanted to become a teacher and coach and is studying mathematics education in college. His dream job is to teach high school math and coach track and field. Cole says, “I feel that if I attain these positions, I can sincerely make a difference in the lives of my students and athletes, which is what I desire above all.”

Connor’s involvement in school and community goes above and beyond. He has earned numerous awards and honors: academic gold honor roll, All-Around Student Award, Nebraska DECA metro and state finalist and the Millard South swimming coaches award. He has served on the junior and senior class boards and volunteered for Special Olympics Nebraska, Student Council Community Service, the Salvation Army, and Toys for Tots, just to name a few. A school counselor noted Connor’s extraordinary leadership skills in serving as captain of the swim team as a sophomore and then starting his own business offering swimming lessons to youngsters. His goal after graduation is to attend Colorado State University to study corporate innovation and entrepreneurship, and law. And then? “I look forward to returning to the Millard community to become actively engaged as a business leader while starting a family,” Connor said.

Mature, kind, polite, intelligent and independent are just a few of the adjectives that Brandon’s high school counselor used to describe him. Brandon’s accomplishments include first place at DECA’s Metro Districts competition, Outstanding Sophomore of the Year Award at Millard West and AMA Motocross State Champion – Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa. His community service includes Ronald McDonald House Charities, translating for Spanish-speaking families during Operation School Bell, the Salvation Army, and a mission trip to a homeless shelter in Hastings, Nebraska. His school counselor describes him as “one of our most devoted Project Wee Care volunteers helping the collection at school and on sorting/boxing/ wrapping day.” Brandon plans to major in marketing at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and aspires to be part of the agribusiness sector in sales.

Scholarship Recipients Rebecca Ostermiller Millard North High School “We Are All Patriots” winner At the start of Rebecca’s freshman year of high school, she and her twin sister were both diagnosed with Stargets Disease, which causes progressive vision loss. Rebecca’s sister has a minor form and is able to do daily life functions but Rebecca’s vision has worsened with time. She has never lost her spirit, however, and has found new ways to navigate life. Photography has been a dream since middle school, and through much research, Rebecca has found programs that will allow her to pursue her passion. She’s attending college with her twin sister and majoring in photography. The scholarships, $1,000 each, are for students attending a trade school, or a two- or four-year college or university. The criteria to qualify can be found at www.millardbcf.org. The goal of the Millard Business Community Foundation Scholarship Program is to encourage graduates to be successful as business and civic leaders and entrepreneurs for the Millard community and its neighbors. To honor the memory of those involved in the tragic events at Millard South on Jan. 5, 2011, two new “We Are All Patriots” scholarships have been established. The winners, to be chosen from nominations by school counselors and teachers, must have overcome personal challenges to achieve academic success. 2019 MBA Hall of Fame Inductees Rich Pahls

Mary Ann Borgeson

Rich Pahls is a retired Millard school administrator and charter member of the Millard Business Association. He also is a former state senator and currently represents District 5 on the Omaha City Council. During his 30-year career in education, Pahls helped bring national acclaim to the Millard Public Schools. He was named National Distinguished Administrator in 1992 and led both Holling Heights Elementary and then-new Bess Streeter Aldrich Elementary School to designations as Blue Ribbon Schools during his tenure. Pahls retired from the district in 2004. In 2005, he won a seat on the Nebraska Legislature, serving two terms as a state senator representing District 31 and Millard. He was chairman of the Banking, Commerce and Insurance Committee and played a key role in stopping the proposed merger of Omaha Public Schools with suburban school districts in Douglas County. In 2013, Pahls was elected to the Omaha City Council. He is half-way through his second four-year term and serves as chairman of the Law Committee. He is also a member of the Millard Business Community Foundation Board and a loyal promoter of the MBA.

Mary Ann Borgeson was first elected to the Douglas County Board of Commissioners, representing District 6, in 1994. She has been re-elected six times and has served as the board’s first female chair for 11 of her 25 years in office. Borgeson has been very active with the Nebraska Association of County Officials since 2001, serving on many committees and on the board. She has served on the National Association of Counties Board since 2012, and will be installed as its president in July. Borgeson has been recognized for her work in the areas of mental health care and services for veterans and the homeless. She was instrumental in implementing a Veterans Unit at the Douglas County Corrections Center and a Stepping Up initiative to reduce the number of mentally-ill people in jails. Her efforts have been saluted by the National Alliance to End Homelessness. The commissioner’s volunteer activities include Free to Breathe Omaha with the Lung Cancer Research Foundation, Millard Business Community Foundation Board and Project Wee Care food drives at the 911 Call Center.

Mayor Jean Stothert Jean Stothert has been a Millard Business Association member since 2012. She is in her second term as mayor of Omaha and was the first woman elected to the office. In her first term, Mayor Stothert reduced the property tax rate twice, improved city services, worked with the Omaha City Council to grow the city’s population and tax base through annexation and increased funding for the police department to bolster its ranks to 902 — an all-time high. In the area of real estate development, she worked to bring Lanoha Development in to redevelop the old Millard Lumber property in downtown Millard and build a new much-needed police precinct building there. Mayor Stothert has roots in Millard. When the Stotherts’ children, Elizabeth and Andrew, started school, Mayor Stothert became involved as a volunteer. Later, she was appointed and then elected to the Millard Board of Education and served 11 years, including three as president. In 2009, she was elected to the Omaha City Council, representing District 5 in southwest Omaha, or Millard.

he 2020 MBA Expo was held Jan. 22 at the Xcel Community Center. The afternoon event kicked off with a ribbon-cutting to mark the opening of the center at 4526 S. 143rd St. The facility was funded by Xcel Roofing as a gift to the community. The MBA Business Expo featured 30 vendors and more than 150 attendees. A unique registration process was provided by Foto Fun Spot, and more than 50 people took advantage of head shots courtesy of Omaha Headshot Company. A DJ from A Final Take kept the party going while guests enjoyed snacks, chips and queso, and margaritas. Door prizes — worth a total of $2,600 — included a billboard ad donated by Lamar Advertising, a branding package from Soul & Swag, and electronic devices. Hillcrest Health Services–Millard won the Best Booth award while Qdoba had the Best Promotional Item. The business professionals who make up the Millard Business Association are eager to network and share information in a way that adds value, creates opportunities, and is fun for all. Millard Water Tower

Water tower helps keep Millard’s identity

ven though Millard has not operated as its own city for almost 50 years, it maintains its identity largely because of one towering landmark. The Millard water tower at 144th and Q Streets was missing its name in big, black letters for 20 years — from the mid-1980s to the mid-2000s. When Metropolitan Utilities District announced it was going to repaint the tower, Millard Business Association leaders saw an opportunity. Then-MBA president Rich Howdle was also president of the Millard Public Schools Foundation Alumni Association when a colleague brought up the water tower in a meeting. He told Howdle that if he really wanted to make a difference, he should get MILLARD put back on the landmark. So Howdle called Steve Andersen, a lifelong Millard resident and co-founder of MBA, who got the ball rolling. Then-State Sen. Rich Pahls, a former Millard schools administrator and current Omaha City Councilman, told Andersen that he should contact MUD

Millard Water Tower board member Dave Friend, who in turn put him in touch with MUD engineer John Velehdrasky. “Networking is very important,” Andersen said, adding that oftentimes it’s more important who you know than what you know. MUD informed Andersen that MBA would have to pay for the MILLARD lettering to be added as part of the paint job. Initial estimates were $6,000. Andersen began fundraising. When the subcontractor was sandblasting the tower, it found the dimples from the original MILLARD block letters. That find reduced the cost to $2,000. “That made their job a heck of a lot easier,” Andersen said. Work on the project began in late 2005, and the painting was completed in 2006. *** The Millard water tower was built in 1962 and began providing water for Millard that same year, according to www.mpsomaha.org. In 1971, Millard lost a long legal battle and was annexed by Omaha. MUD then took control of the water tower. Andersen, whose grandfather was Millard’s first and only mayor, Harry Andersen, said having MILLARD repainted on the tower was important for maintaining a sense of

community. “It’s our identity,” he said. “It’s one of the only things Millard has left.” After Millard was annexed, many street signs were replaced and the name became harder to find. The MILLARD words on the water tower were first covered with white paint by MUD in the mid-1980s after a group of mischievous 1985 Millard South High School graduates climbed the tower and spray painted a mess of words on it, including the names of their girlfriends at the time, Howdle said. One of them didn’t have a girlfriend, though, and wrote “85 GARDS” instead. Howdle said he was friends with the young men who pulled off the stunt, but what kept him from participating wasn’t the possible punishment. It was his fear of heights. “Nobody got caught,” Howdle said. Andersen remembers seeing the graffiti, but he said at first he didn’t know what it was supposed to say. “I remember the ‘GARDS’” he said. “I thought it was funnier than heck!” It goes without saying, however, that Andersen is glad to have MILLARD back on the water tower. “I feel it’s important to keep that identity,” he said.
