LOVE IS IN THE AIR Sometimes you only need to look in your own backyard to find the perfect setting for a monumental day. That was the case behind the scenes of our Emerald Aisle styled shoot that begins on page 28. I’ve long wanted to use the woods in my backyard for a Wedding Essentials editorial. The popularity of enchanted forest wedding themes and a sweet young man’s unexpected inquiry nudged me into action. I was pinning ideas to a secret Pinterest board when my nephew, Konrad, texted. He was developing a plan for an over-the-top proposal and wanted some location ideas. I drew a blank when he asked about a spot with rooftop dining under the stars and a gorgeous city view (Omaha Marriott Downtown at the Capitol District had yet to open!) A romantic surprise was about to be sprung. It occurred to me that I could use Konrad’s sweetheart, Marisa, as a bridal model. The fiance-wannabe and I hatched a scheme that combined my backyard shoot and his aim for an unforgettable proposal.

The big moment came near the end of the shoot, with the sun just beginning to dip below the horizon. As if on cue, the sky turned a brilliant reddish-orange, and Konrad slipped onto the scene. As cameras blazed, he dropped to one knee and asked for Marisa’s hand. Off came the modest ring Marisa had been modeling. In its place, the real deal (a knockout from Borsheims). Sealed with the best kiss. And tears. I can’t tell you how exciting it is to have a wedding in our family’s future. But wait! You do know! Marisa’s head is spinning. Yours probably is, too. We’re here with inspiration, advice and tips to help you feel confident and equipped to navigate the decisions ahead. Crave more? (We know you do!) Save the date – Jan. 7, 2018 – for our Wedding Essentials Bridal University. It’s the perfect opportunity to get your brain around the vendors available to you – and the wonderful wedding plans they can help you bring to life. Here’s to sunsets and sweet surprises. REAL WEDDING

hannah & adam WYN WILEY PHOTOGRAPHY · JULY 28, 2017 · OAKLAND GOLF CLUB, OAKLAND NEBRASKA

PRINCE CHARMING They reconnected online and talked nonstop on their first date. Hannah says it didn’t take long to realize the relationship was special. “I was ready to say ‘I love you’ two weeks later when Adam was willing to carry a makeshift spatula wand and dance around the kitchen to ‘Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo’ with Charlotte, my 5-year-old.” STOCKING STUFFER Hannah, Adam and Charlotte were celebrating Christmas together when Hannah was down to her last present, a square box. She had convinced herself it was anything but a ring. “Before he could ask, I had the ring on my finger,’’ she says. “He wanted an intimate proposal, and I wanted a huge party. After a big family hug with Charlotte, we called my dad, and then Adam said everyone was waiting at my mom’s house to celebrate.’’ PARTY OF THE YEAR That was Hannah’s goal. She wanted a white floral theme but couldn’t find accent colors she truly loved. So she went with ivory and cream for the wedding party and decor. “I wanted everyone to feel comfortable and relaxed but still very elegant,’’ she says. Her advice is to get a personal color analysis before shopping. “I pushed away anything bright white and only tried on ivory and cream-colored dresses.” There was no guesswork in her wedding makeup either. The color analysis also came into play in the bridesmaid dresses, flowers and accents of gold and ecalyptus green. MOTHER-DAUGHTER MOMENT After a sweet first look with Adam on the fairway, Hannah spied a golf cart coming her away with the cutest flower girl she’d ever seen. “I took off running, and Charlotte jumped out of

the golf cart before they could bring it to a halt. It was so fun to be in our dresses together, and Charlotte could not have been sweeter. It’s a memory I will cherish forever.” PERFECT ENDING Hannah surprised Adam with Sammy Kershaw’s “Queen of My Double Wide Trailer” for their final dance under the stars. It’s one of his favorite songs. “His jaw dropped to the floor when it started playing. It was the perfect way to end the night and was very much ‘us.’ ’’ ORIGINAL TOUCHES Hannah embraced the Southern tradition of honorary bridesmaids, called a “house party.” She had six in addition to her three honor attendants. For the outdoor reception, a grazing table, taco buffet and homemade desserts and fried rolls (instead of cake) were hits with guests. “As a nutrition major, I loved that we added fresh fruit and vegetables to the menu,’’ the bride says. Signage and favors were hand-lettered and illustrated by the bride’s sister, Abby. ONE TRADITION CONTINUES Hannah loved the idea of making Belgian waffles on Saturdays – a throwback to her childhood. So it was extra-special when she got a waffle maker from former neighbors in Dallas who also helped set up the reception. LIFE LESSONS Hannah, a teacher, and Adam, a farmer, learned a few things about compromise as plans came together. “He is the sweet to my salty,’’ Hannah says. “Although I might have said otherwise at times, I loved how involved he wanted to be in the wedding process. On the other end of the aisle, I will say that being married is infinitely better than anything I could’ve ever imagined.’’

TRENDS

IT'S ALL ABOUT VARIETY OMAHA HOTEL

TEXT MARJIE DUCEY

Customers at Cake Creations Omaha rarely ask for chocolate or white wedding cake anymore. It’s all about variety. “We offer 26 flavors,” says owner Tonya Brown. The trend, she notes, is a reflection of brides and grooms wanting their guests to have the best experience possible. That means more than one dessert selection, observes Naomi Jamerson, wedding cake coordinator at the Cake Gallery. Especially when it comes to cake. “We don’t ever do one flavor,’’ Brown says. “We do three or four.’’ Pink champagne is the darling of the moment. But mango, cannoli, caramel and almond hazelnut are tickling taste buds too.

Where your special day can sparkle!

SEASONAL SELECTIONS Spring and summer weddings are all about fruity flavors. Think lemon and strawberry. With fall and winter come heavier flavors such as pumpkin spice, caramel and red velvet. “Carrot is always really strong in the fall,’’ Jamerson says.

SOME COSTS Potential customers can arrange to taste up to 12 flavors at Cake Creations, and all flavors are priced the same. More commonly, bake shops charge between 45 and 65 cents per serving for flavors other than standard chocolate, white or marble.

SMALLER CAKES A six-tiered wedding cake with fountains and bridges that feeds 300 guests is a rarity, says Jamerson. Her customers are more likely to order two- to four-tier cakes serving 25 to 150 and less-expensive sheet cakes in additional flavors.

SPECIAL ORDERS Both Brown and Jamerson say they’ll try to accommodate any request. Jamerson once replicated a marzipan filling a groom’s grandmother was famous for making.

BLASTOFF One of Jamerson’s favorites was a groom’s request for an Atomic Cake that's popular in Chicago. It features yellow and chocolate cake with fresh bananas, fresh strawberry filling and whipped-cream frosting. “He said it was the best one he’d had outside of Chicago.”

kelly & nick MAE SMALL PHOTOGRAPHY · JUNE 17, 2017 · GRAND HALL AT COPPER STATION, COLORADO

YOU WANT TO WHAT? After dating since their graduation from nursing school, Nick decided to propose to Kelly while they were snowboarding at Beaver Creek Mountain in Colorado. He made three failed attempts at chasing Kelly down the mountain before he was in position to pop the question. “On the last run, he was finally successful,’’ Kelly laughed. MOUNTAIN THEME Nick and Kelly chose mountainy boho chic neutrals and earth tones for their wedding. Their copper accents were perfect for a ceremony against a Rocky Mountain backdrop. ALL HER OWN All the decor aside from the flowers was purchased from Etsy and put together by Kelly. Every other table had a hand-painted quote and each was full of fresh flowers. FIRST LOOK It was done atop the mountain where they were married. They did a day-after session, too, in which they explored the mountainside with their dog. WHO’S THE GROOM? At the rehearsal, the officiant kept mixing up the names of the groom and the best man. “Not something you want to mess up,’’ Kelly said. “He got it right for the ceremony.’’ SWEET TRADITION The

bride’s dad put a handwritten note and a mint in Kelly’s wedding shoe, just like he used to do for soccer games. They shared a father-daughter dance to dad’s selected waltz, too. “That was the highlight of the whole wedding for him,’’ Kelly shared. IN THEIR OWN WORDS Kelly says writing their own vows meant much more to them than reading random words. “It will forever be a special memory.’’ DINNER ANYONE? Their favorite wedding gift was a Traeger grill, which Nick is obsessed with. They also got a Mercury outboard motor from Kelly’s parents that Nick has put to good use. KEEP IT SIMPLE Kelly’s advice to bridal couples is to enjoy every step of the day with family and friends, and to be careful not to overwhelm yourself. “Don’t concern yourself with too many projects, because people won’t even know if they didn’t happen. Just enjoy the memories.’’ Nick thinks she did an amazing job. BIGGEST ADJUSTMENT Nick says Kelly is the love of his life, and she says he’s selfless and sweet. So what has been the hardest adjustment to married life? “Getting used to my new last name,’’ Kelly says.

amy & paul ANNA KIM PHOTOGRAPHY · JULY 11, 2017 · SUGAR BEACH EVENTS, MAUI

FRIENDS FIRST They met while hanging out with friends, and discovered they had similar interests. “Eventually, we realized we had an undeniable connection, and became a couple,’’ Amy shared. FIREWORKS July Fourth is one of Amy’s favorite holidays, and it was the first holiday that she and Paul had celebrated as a couple. So it was perfect for a 2016 proposal. “It was very intimate and sweet, which is exactly how I hoped the proposal would be,’’ Amy says. ON THE ROAD AGAIN They wanted a destination wedding where they could celebrate with family and friends. They’d fallen in love with Maui’s beauty and atmosphere during a previous visit and wanted their friends and family to do the same. “They sure did,’’ Amy says. BEACH BACKDROP Amy’s wedding vision was elegant, romantic and soft. The color theme of blush, ivory and gold included peonies and roses, a sparkling chandelier and elegant touches of gold. “An oceanfront backdrop was important to us,’’ Amy says. “Sugar Beach Events was the perfect venue. Having an intimate wedding allowed us to spend more time with our family and friends during our reception.’’ SWEETEST MOMENT They exchanged handwritten cards to each other before their first look. “We chose to do a private first look. It really helped calm our nerves and let us enjoy that special moment alone together.’’ WEDDING DETOUR The flower girls started down the wrong path during the procession,

providing a cute and funny moment. “They eventually found their way.’’ FUN FOR BOTH The couple had guests take photos of themselves with an Instax camera and paste the prints into a guestbook with a special note. Amy designed the book with help from Etsy. The blush pink with gold foil lettering fit right in with their theme. “The guests had fun with it, and we enjoyed looking at the guestbook after the wedding,’’ Amy says. THEIR WAY They decided to forgo some traditional elements like the bouquet/garter toss, multiple speeches and the dollar dance. It gave them more time with their guests. HAWAIIAN TOUCHES They took their photos on the beach. “The lighting and the sunset was amazing and made for great photos.’’ They chose a yellow cake with lilikoi/passion fruit filling, both unique and delicious. “I had fresh white dendrobium orchids in my hair, and I had fresh floral crowns made for the flower girls. It was fun to have a ukulele player for our ceremony and cocktail hour.’’ KITCHEN BUDDIES They love to try recipes and cook together after receiving a Le Creuset dutch oven. Amy says it’s the start of many new culinary adventures. PLAN AHEAD They talked about their must-haves and concentrated on making them happen. “Our wedding day advice is to step back, look around and take in the moment,’’ Amy says. “The day goes by really fast, so try to enjoy every moment.’’

PYRAMIDS OF A DIFFERENT SORT TEXT MARJIE DUCEY PHOTOGRAPHY TAYLOR RAE PHOTOGRAPHY

Nebraska doesn’t have any deserts, beaches or mountains. So where does a photographer take a bride who has a style all her own and wants an engagement session to match? Jayci McGill issued the challenge and Taylor Krapp of Taylor Rae Photography answered with a rock pile near Springfield, Nebraska. Jayci and fiance Jake Foster loved it. The couple also had photos taken in an ice cream shop and a dreamy pasture at sunset. But the rock pile? A standout choice! Jayci and Jake’s love story began in high school, when they met at a

62

FALL 2017   weddingessentialsmagazine.com

friend’s bonfire. She was a freshman and he was a junior. “Steadies” ever since, the Omahans will tie the knot June 23, 2018, at Arbor Day Farm in Nebraska City, Nebraska. Admittedly, neither Jayci nor Jake have a particular affinity for rocks, although Jake did have a rock collection as a boy. “I had seen a similar shoot and I just really liked how different it was, so Taylor made it happen,” the future bride says. Turns out, the setting is a bit symbolic of their love story after all. “God is the rock of our relationship,” Jayci says. “I never thought about it until now!”

 weddingessentialsmagazine.com  63

Taylor Krapp of Taylor Rae Photography offers these tips for a memorable photo shoot of your own. FIND YOUR STYLE Everyone has their own style and preferences, so find a photographer who can capture that. BE ADVENTUROUS Don’t book someone who specializes in traditional settings if you want something more gritty or adventurous. Check their work first. CONNECT & SHARE Get to know each other, first by phone and then in person. That way your photographer can get a feel for your sense of style, your personalities and your ideas and interests. THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX Be original, unconventional, even impulsive, and see where it takes you! Your interests, your love story, your passions can all inspire the perfect location. TRUST YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER If you don’t feel comfortable with your photographer, find another. Crazy requests that get you both laughing can result in the best shots of the day. “The pictures will turn out great if you trust your photographer,’’ Krapp says.

that photographer Meghan Small will never forget. When Nick McKay turned to see bride Kelly Thompson ready to walk down the aisle, even Small and her husband, Tim, were brought to tears. “He saw her and immediately covered his eyes and fell to his knees,’’ recalls Small, of Mae Small Photography. “It was pretty amazing.’’ Many brides and grooms no longer consider it bad luck to see each other before the wedding. Instead, a “first look’’ provides an intimate moment during an occasion that can be overflowing with people, activities and emotions. “It’s the only time all day it’s just the two of them,’’ Small notes. There are practical reasons for

a first look, too. For many, it’s part of a trend to get pictures taken and out of the way before the wedding. That narrows the gap between the ceremony and the reception and allows the wedding party to hop on the party bus afterward and start having fun without delay. Some couples just don’t like the idea of seeing each other for the first time with a crowd looking on. “They are just really shy and super nervous about going down the aisle,’’ Small says. “They prefer to see each other beforehand to get the nerves out.’’ That “first look’’ has even morphed beyond just brides and grooms, wedding planners say. Many brides are now getting a shot with their fathers or bridesmaids.

WEDDING PARTY SPECIAL $50 DISCOUNT DADDY’S LITTLE GIRL Vernetta Kosalka of Wedding Planner Omaha encourages brides to get a first look with their fathers or even both mom and dad. “For a parent to see their child getting married and moving into adulthood and making their own families is a huge moment,’’ she explains.

Audra Pace from Dream Big Events says all of her weddings in 2018 have that special moment planned with dad. Her favorite so far was the first she did with a father and daughter, last year at a little chapel in Norfolk, Nebraska. “They had a very strong father-daughter bond,’’ she says. “There were tears and laughter, and it was super sweet.’’ MOTHERS, TOO Some brides might not have a strong male figure in their life. That’s when mom and the bride share a special moment instead. “It just depends on who was the big role model for them,’’ Pace says. “It depends on the family dynamics.’’ LOOK AT ME Many bridesmaids have been in on the wedding planning from the start. But this is the first time they’ll see the bride in her complete look. “I think it’s something that is going to be catching on,’’ Small says. Pace recalls bridesmaids putting their hands on each other’s shoulders and being led into the next room, where they opened their eyes and saw the waiting bride. Photographers were able to capture that first reaction. FINDING TIME Don’t worry that it’s one more thing you have to fit in. It takes 10 minutes at most. Kosalka makes sure that for her brides, it’s part of the wedding day timeline. TRADITIONALISTS Not everyone wants to do a first look with their future spouse, and that’s OK. Kosalka says she’s seeing more couples who want to wait until the ceremony. “They want to take a moment to see each other down the aisle,’’ she says. “They want to take a breath and take it in.’’

REAL WEDDING

sara & mitch ANDREA BIBEAULT: A WEDDING PHOTOJOURNALIST · APRIL 22, 2017 · HILTON OMAHA

JUST ONE LOOK When they were sophomores at NebraskaLincoln, a sorority sister spotted Mitch’s fraternity picture and told Sara that she should ask him to an upcoming formal. She texted him that night. “The rest, as they say, is history,’’ Sara says. WINTER WONDERLAND He proposed on Christmas Eve morning 2015 in his parents’ backyard. Seven inches of snow foiled his original plan to pop the question at Gene Leahy Mall in downtown Omaha. GOLDEN MOMENT Sara envisioned a wedding reception shimmering in candlelight. She achieved it against a backdrop of wine and gold in the florals and decor. “I was particularly interested in unique elements for my wedding florals – which were spectacular,’’ she says. She especially loved the tokens in her bouquet that contained wedding photos of her parents and grandparents. “They all enjoyed longevity in their marriages,’’ she says. Her wedding day marked her parents' 28th year of marriage. IT’S THE ONE Sara wore an Emily Hart gown, the first dress she tried on. It was modified with long, lace illusion sleeves. Her veil was made from tulle from her mother-in-law’s wedding veil. FAMILY AFFAIR Mitch’s mom, a stylist with J.Hilburn, coordinated the men’s attire. Sara’s mom planned and designed the day. Sara’s second cousin, the Rev. James Gilg, performed

the ceremony. An aunt provided custom-made teardrop earrings. SWEET MOMENT Mitch got emotional when he saw Sara walk down the aisle. “The photographer captured the moment beautifully,’’ Sara says. CARDBOARD CAKE They didn’t realize their wedding cake was sitting on a cardboard platter. “We exerted a great amount of strength trying to cut through it,’’ Sara laughs. “We finally dislodged a big enough piece to share — with no cardboard!’’ INSTANT MEMORY They loved their Polaroid photo book. “It’s a great keepsake and much better than a guest book with no pictures.’’ ROAST BEEF, ANYONE? Sara’s aunt and uncle own an Arby’s restaurant, so they had the fast food for a late-night snack. Guests loved it. FAVORITE PRESENT A cryo spa from a family friend. “It isn’t something we would ever spend our money on, but we love it.’’ BEST FRIENDS Sara thinks Mitch is hilarious, and he’s coming to grips with her addiction to clothes. They’re adjusting to making decisions together after a honeymoon in Aruba. “From what house to buy to what to eat for dinner,’’ Sara says. “We communicate pretty well.’’ LABOR OF LOVE Enjoy the process, Sara says. It shouldn’t seem like work. “It is one of the best memories that I share with my mom.’’

A wedding-day timeline is critical to keeping yourself – and every major element of your wedding – on track. And who wouldn’t appreciate a safety net and an anxietyreducer rolled into one tidy reference sheet? We called on Vernetta Kosalka of Wedding Planner Omaha and Audra Pace of Dream Big Events to help us illustrate a timeline for a late afternoon ceremony, followed by a dinner and dance. Create your own adaptation, using the pros’ time brackets as your guide. Visit our website for more planning tools, including a monthly countdown of to-dos leading up to the big day.

REAL WEDDING

tanna & johnny BRETT BROONER PHOTOGRAPHY · JULY 29, 2017 · LAURITZEN GARDENS

FOREVER FRIENDS Johnny’s sister Angel is Tanna’s best friend. The two met in middle school, so Johnny came into the picture as well. IN THE MOOD The couple went to the Dominican Republic for a friend's wedding. When the festivities were over, they got a bottle of champagne and walked on the beach, where Johnny proposed. Tanna was completely shocked. “He talked to everyone about it,’’ she says. “They all came running out afterward.” CHANGE OF PLANS They had planned to marry in Breckenridge, Colorado, and she had bought her dress and the wedding party attire based on that location. “We actually paid for a spot that was on a bunch of land, and we could do almost anything we wanted.’’ Because of family circumstances, they instead were married at Lauritzen Gardens in Omaha. She loved its beauty and being surrounded by nature. “My vision went from bohemian to more of a simple theme. You don’t need much to decorate at Lauritzen Gardens.’’ TIMELY DELAY One of the groomsmen missed his flight and didn’t arrive until 15 minutes before the ceremony. “He was literally getting dressed as he walked into the venue,’’ Tanna shared. The short delay he created actually was perfect. The DJ told Tanna the electricity hadn’t been turned on outside and no one would be able to hear anything during the ceremony. The extra few minutes gave them time

to find a maintenance worker to solve the problem. NO TALKING Tanna woke up with barely any voice on her wedding day, though she felt fine. By the end of the night, her voice was down to a whisper. “It’s something I’ll never forget,’’ she says. Ditto for the wedding recessional. “I forgot my bouquet. My sister Kaylen had to carry my giant bouquet and her bouquet.’’ NO WORRIES Despite not having a wedding planner, the bride stayed calm through every challenge. “It was all just so perfect,’’ she says. She even went to Target after she got her hair and makeup done because she had time to kill. That gave her a chance to pick up some cough drops and check what was on sale. SPIKY CENTERPIECES Succulents proved easy and economical. She also had some flower centerpieces she arranged herself after getting advice from the floral designer that did the wedding bouquets. HONEYMOON ON HOLD Because of Johnny’s job they delayed their trip. They got credit for what had been their planned venue in Breckenridge, so Tanna said that could be the perfect place if they don’t go to Jamaica or Hawaii. RIGHT FOR EACH OTHER There haven’t been a lot of adjustments since they’ve been married. Johnny says Tanna keeps him grounded. “He is always making me laugh,’’ says Tanna.

THOUGHTFUL & REFINED TEXT MARJIE DUCEY

Blues, yellows and orange

won’t ever edge out white, ivory and blush as go-to wedding colors. “It’s all very soft and light and neutral right now,’’ says Tracey Fricke of Occasion Designed, “and it’s still leading into 2018 looking like that.’’ But some brides are considering those brighter colors as they search for something beyond a classic look. Candace Kalasky of Lovestruck Events says most of her clients are open to working more vibrant hues into their wedding design. Nothing in your face – just unique and subtle touches.Think a pop of orange in a floral arrangement or blue in a menu or table number. It’s another way to make your wedding stand out. “I have so many brides ready to see something different,’’ Kalasky says. No bride wants a cookie-cutter wedding, she and Fricke agree. With the advent of Instagram and Pinterest, brides are doing a lot more research to bring their own style to their event. “They may see a concept, and it spurs their creative juices to come up with something that is a better fit for them,’’ Fricke says. Some of the louder standalone items that showed up along with the birth of Pinterest are going away. Kalasky says her clients are looking at their events with a more thoughtful, refined eye. No more flashy lights and linens. “They are looking to create a cohesive atmosphere — comfortable and intimate without being splashy,’’ she says. Brides who want a neutral palette but also something different might add a natural element such as greenery. Or a pop of metallic, Fricke suggests, in vases, candles, chairs, glassware, silverware and table numbers. Lighting is yet another way to create a fresh look. “If you bring in different elements of lighting, it will feel like a completely different space than the last time you attended an event there,’’ Fricke explains. “There are so many ways to create your own unique design.’’

SEATING A Chiavari chair can transform your space. Common finishes are gold, silver, black, white and fruitwood, which brings in a popular natural element. A cover also can change the look of a venue’s chairs. If you’re seeking a more organic look for an outdoor setting, try a vineyard chair. Kalasky says it offers a more medium wood tone than fruitwood and is becoming more popular with her clients.

98

LIGHTING Spot lighting can bring a unique look to a tablescape, Fricke says, and chandeliers always add a beautiful touch. String lighting with Edison bulbs is an option for those seeking a minimalist look and can make a space feel more intimate, especially outdoors or in area with a lot of natural light. “The biggest thing for us is the lighting has to fit the setting,’’ Kalasky says. “You never want to put a crystal chandelier in a space where the finishes might compete.’’

FALL 2017   weddingessentialsmagazine.com

FABRICS It’s fun to play with different finishes. Brides can use anything from a raw satin such as shantung or majestic to a standard fabric. Fricke and Kalasky are seeing increased popularity of linens with embroidery or other textures, some threedimensional.

INVITATIONS This is where many brides look to add a wow moment to their stationery. Think foil, handmade paper or envelope linings. Each can create a special touch even if your invitations aren’t custom designed. Fricke sees a lot of floral and natural elements, too. “It’s still very, very hot,’’ she says. Just remember that the invitations should tie in with the rest of your wedding stationery.

COLOR Though bright colors may have taken a backseat to more neutral palettes, that doesn’t mean you can’t use them in your wedding. “If you love those vibrant pops, then do it,’’ Fricke says.

Making dreams come true in a setting as unique as the couple. Enjoy one-of-a-kind skyline views from the 19th floor. Imagine a formal, grand ballroom with soaring ceilings. REAL WEDDING

miranda & gabe ROCKING J IMAGING · AUGUST 5, 2017 · BABEL'S BARN, WOOD RIVER, NEBRASKA

PIVOT PROPOSAL: Both the bride and groom have farming backgrounds and a passion for agriculture. So when Gabe asked Miranda for help fixing a pivot, she thought nothing of it. “He told me to open the panel box and press a button,’’ Miranda recalls. “Inside the panel box, next to the button was written, ‘Will you marry me?’ When I turned around, he was down on one knee.’’ FARM CHIC: Miranda’s vision was for a farm-chic wedding with a dash of elegance that reflected who they are as a couple. It wasn’t anything she’d ever seen in a magazine. “We incorporated decorations that resonated with our farming backgrounds. For example, we used cowhide for tablecloths on the head table and a chunk from a windmill blade as our guestbook.’’ HELP WANTED: Miranda’s advice: Don’t stress over the small things. Instead, put that energy toward enjoying the day with your guests. She recommends following her lead and hiring a wedding planner/coordinator. “They take so much of the stress off you and will be worth every penny.’’ SPECIAL VISITOR: During their first look on the family farm, a butterfly landed on Miranda’s bouquet. “This moment was very sentimental for both of us because it’s believed that when a butterfly lands on you, it’s a sign that passed loved ones are with you,’’ Miranda

shares. DRESS MALFUNCTION: Miranda’s dad tried to come to the rescue when Miranda needed a last-minute fix as the wedding party started down the aisle. “Bless his heart, but he had no idea what he was doing,’’ she says. “I laughed so hard my nerves just went away.’’ CLASSIC MOMENT: When the pastor talked about love and how it brought the two of them together, Miranda says everyone else faded into the background. BREAD AND BUTTER: Their favorite gift was a breadbox. They hadn’t registered for one and thought about returning it before taking a closer look. They found a note stuck to it that read, “What fun is a breadbox with no bread?’ Inside, they found cash. “Good thing we didn’t return it!” HAPPY ENDING: After the reception festivities, their photographer and videographer took some sunset shots. They both felt relaxed and happy. “The feeling of joy in that moment was indescribable.’’ SWEETHEART: Gabe says Miranda has a huge heart not only for everyone she meets but for animals. “I’ve seen her save an entire litter of field mice.’’ She says he’s genuine and real. “When life gets a little too crazy to handle, he is my calm opposite that gives me balance.’’ She appreciates his decorating skills, too.
