SUMMER 2018 weddingessentialsmagazine.com
HANNAH SUNDERMAN’S DECISION TO HAVE A COLOR CONSULTATION BEFORE HER WEDDING CREATED A DOMINO EFFECT. Nearly everyone in her wedding party, as well as three colleagues and several family members, have since gotten a color assessment of their own. “I am a huge advocate,’’ Sunderman says. “It totally changes your life.’’ Knowing her "wow colors" made planning for her wedding easier, too. Her three-hour consultation revealed that she's a "summer" in the four-season color guide. With her hair, eye and skin tone, she looks best in what her consultant calls "sweet pea" hues. Think smoky grays, soft pinks, light blues and lilacs. Sunderman used that knowledge to pick out an ivory wedding dress, soft purples and blues for the wedding party and lots of greenery for her decorations. “It really simplified the whole process,’’ she says. “The flowers went with the bridesmaid dresses, which went with the ties, which went with the programs. It allowed me to create a cohesive look; everything flowed together.’’
Karen Blanc, who did Sunderman’s consultation, is one of three House of Colour advisers in Nebraska. She says the process is often an eyeopener for brides-to-be, who don’t realize how even the colors of the bridesmaids impact their look. “Those women are around her all day,’’ Blanc says. “They are her accessories.’’ Sunderman uses her color consultation to guide her entire wardrobe. She wears soft pinks, something that she never had in her closet before. She adores a soft blue-gray. “It has saved me unbelievable amounts of money by knowing what looks best on me,’’ she says. “You feel confident that everything you are buying goes together.’’
HOW A COLOR ANALYSIS CAN WORK FOR YOU: Picking your wedding dress A visit to a bridal shop can be overwhelming. You’re flooded with dress color options, from bright white to oyster. A dress in a shade of white may have you twirling with joy while the same dress in an ivory leaves you feeling underwhelmed, even drab. “A beautiful dress can look dingy and cheap if the color doesn't harmonize with the bride's skin tones,’’ Blanc says. Knowledge from a consultation allows you to narrow choices to your best colors before that first visit to a dress shop. Choosing your wedding colors Blanc’s daughter, Hannah Guenther, says her color consultation was a guiding light in selecting everything from her table linens to
her white gold engagement ring and band. She even asked her photographer to avoid any orange undertones in the final editing of her pictures.
best; he would wear a white shirt even though her dress was ivory. The bride returned to the shop with her wedding photos to prove the point. “It worked out just fine.’’
Makeup matters Blanc says that after a consultation, you’ll even know what lip and nail colors are right for you. “You don’t want your lipstick to walk down the aisle before you,’’ Blanc says. “It’s got to reflect your personal coloring to light up your face.’’
Black isn’t always best Black is slimming and fashionable, yes. Unfortunately, only about one-fourth of the population looks really good in black, Blanc says. “Black is only in one of the season palettes. It’s one of the worst colors for many people. Black and white are not universally good colors.’’
One couple, two seasons What happens if you are a spring and your future spouse is a winter? It doesn’t doom your wedding. Each of you should just wear your own best colors. Hannah Guenther insisted so when a sales associate suggested otherwise in selecting a shirt for her husband, Adam. He ended the argument by saying Hannah knew
Look your best Knowing your wow colors can make you feel like a million dollars, Blanc says. And who doesn't want that on their wedding day? “Everyone owns a set of wow colors that makes you look your best,’’ she says. “Everyone should be wearing their very best color.’’

taylor & dane ROCKING J IMAGING · OCTOBER 28, 2017 · THE PLAYER'S CLUB
HIGH SCHOOL SWEETHEARTS Taylor and Dane met through mutual friends when they were 16 and have been together for a decade now. ROAD TRIP Their first road trip as a couple was to Minneapolis to see friends and a concert. After a day on the town, they returned to their hotel where champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries were waiting in their room. When Taylor turned to ask Dane about it, "He was on his knee and that was that,'' she says. They planned a boho chic wedding with rustic touches. IT'S FUNNY NOW A few days before the wedding, Taylor's mom shared some advice: “If the cake falls on the ground, just go with it.” Unbelievably, as Dane and Taylor were cutting their cake, the stand toppled and down went the cake. "Thankfully, I caught most of it before it knocked over the candles on the cake table,'' Taylor says. "My cousin's wife, who is a cake decorator, doctored it. We are so thankful our photographer caught the whole thing to give us a good laugh," the bride says. JUST THE TWO OF US They agree that their first dance was the sweetest moment of the day. "This was the first time the whole wedding day we weren’t mic’d up and could just reflect on the day.'' UNFORGETTABLE MOMENTS Their instant-photo guestbook was a fun way to see guests'
personalities. They had the sweetest favors, too. "My grandma is a fantastic baker, and she made sugar cookies for every guest.'' THEIR FAVORITE GIFT It wasn't something they were given. Rather, it was something they had. "We have a lot of friends and family who have moved to different states. It was nice having everyone together again.'' LAST-MINUTE HELP Taylor thought she could handle the decor for the rehearsal and reception but was relieved when a family friend stepped up at the last minute. Nothing felt rushed and she actually felt very relaxed, thanks to everyone who helped. Don't get upset if things don't go exactly as planned, she says, because at the end of the day you are marrying the love of your life. "Enjoy it and don’t forget to take a moment to breathe and take it all in,'' she says. BUSY CAREERS Time together is precious because both work long hours, Dane as a teacher and Taylor as a night-shift nurse. Dane, also head girls basketball coach for Bellevue West, says Taylor is beautiful and keeps him level-headed as he works toward his goals. Taylor says Dane is driven, patient, kind and generous with his time, especially as a teacher and coach. "We have been through a lot together, and his positivity is the light in any bad situation," she says. "I can’t wait to see what our future holds.''

A day of pampering is the perfect way to help a dizzied bride unleash her inner calm. Double, triple, even quadruple the fun by whisking her away for a bachelorette getaway. Head for a full-service spa for a day of beauty or plan your own
spa-like escape at a favorite hotel with a spacious suite. Start the party in late afternoon with in-room manicures and
pedicures and a mini bubbly bar, teas, flavored waters, light appetizers and sweets. Take a break for cocktails and dinner,
then head for the hot tub, sauna or pool for a little more bonding before calling it a day. Plan a morning massage for the bride (hire a pro to work on-site) and DIY facials for the maids, then cater-in a casual brunch (hello, room service?) to celebrate the fun of looking and feeling your best. And the joy of giving the bride a little pre-wedding bliss. 10 TIPS TO LOOKING YOUR BEST T E X T MARJIE DUCEY
THE BEST MAKEUP ARTISTS HAVE A COMMON WEDDING-DAY GOAL. “We want the bride to feel happy and beautiful,’’ says Kristen Rozmiarek, a master stylist and lead makeup artist for Kontempo. It’s an art, she says, that involves getting to know the bride and the venue. Here are her top 10 tips: Select a makeup artist who fits your style. You should feel comfortable with his or her approach. "Don’t be afraid to say what you want. If you see something you don’t like, tell us,’’ Rozmiarek says. If your preferences are ignored or dismissed, find a better match. Do a trial run. A practice session the day before your ceremony can yield lots of information. Maybe the eyeliner didn’t last or the blush disappeared. Those are things that can be fixed on the big day. That’s also why Rozmiarek recommends using high-quality products.

Block plenty of time. Rozmiarek typically blocks an hour for the bride and 45 minutes per bridesmaid and mother of the bride. “I like to take that extra time for a bride because she’s so sensitive to everything being perfect.’’ If the photographer is there, request a test photo so you can see how your makeup will look in the official photos. Keep it light. While you want to look special, you also want people to recognize you as you walk down the aisle. “Most people don’t wear a lot of heavy makeup on a day-to-day basis,’’ Rozmiarek says. Don’t do it on your big day either.
Omaha’s Premier Source for Party & Event Rentals Ditto for lips. If you have light hair, an ivory dress and soft green flowers, don’t distract from that picture with a hot pink or dark lip color. “You don’t want anything too bold that is going to take away from the color scheme,’’ Rozmiarek says. A nude lip color, on the other hand, can make you look sickly and washed out (lip colors tend to appear one shade lighter in photographs). “The corpsy look,’’ she calls it. Stay light but play off your natural lip and skin tones, Rozmiarek suggests. You also could wear a more dramatic lip color for photographs and then blot it for the ceremony. Or go with a lighter shade entirely. Avoid lip stains; opt for a lipstick that can be easily refreshed. Eye your palette. For a natural look, Rozmiarek uses eye shadows in earth tones (but occasionally plays up a blue or green eye with a hint of purple). The exception is a bride who typically wears darker colors, has deep-set eyes or a dark wedding palette. Heavy black eyeliner will overpower a soft romantic feel; dark brown most often is a better choice. Go easy on tanning. Makeup artists can fix a lighter face but the orange from a spray tan gone wrong will eat its way through most foundations (and ruin your dress). Rozmiarek's advice: Do not apply self-tanner to your face. If you have to tan because you’re heading to the beach for your honeymoon, apply very lightly to the face.

Beware of concealer. Some under-eye concealers and setting powders reflect light in flash photography and show up as white or light spots on the face. When touching up with powder, press a small amount into the skin and dust off any excess, or use blotting paper. In a pinch, gently blot with a clean tissue. Prepare to blot. When the tears come, blot them with your finger or a tissue and let your skin air dry. Your makeup will stay where it is, Rozmiarek says. Don’t wipe; you’ll get rid of the tears and your makeup at the same time. Hydrate and catch some zzzz's. It’s amazing what good sleep and lots of water will do for your face. Sleep reduces puffiness and dark circles under the eyes. Hydrating well before the wedding plumps the skin and creates a better surface for makeup. Rozmiarek recommends waxing at least a week before the wedding so your skin texture has a chance to bounce back. Don’t worry if you have acne, rosacea or scarring. “That is really easy to cover up with makeup,’’ Rozmiarek says. 2102074-01

katey & levi TRIN JENSEN PHOTOGRAPHY · JUNE 3, 2017 · NOAH'S EVENT VENUE
NOT YOUR TYPICAL WORK DAY Katey was surprised to return from a meeting and find flowers and a note from Levi at her desk. He didn’t have security clearance but some colleagues smuggled him in. “Out of nowhere, he walked over to my desk and proposed as everyone cheered.’’ Family and friends continued the surprise with a rooftop gathering at Pitch Pizzeria. CIGAR ANYONE? The two love food and cigars. Their first date was to Taste of Omaha, followed by a nightcap at Havana Garage (they even did some engagement shots there). They wanted something unconventional for their wedding, so they hired Dante Pizzeria to cater the reception and served LaMar’s Donuts instead of cake. Guests were able to watch Dante make the pizza from the patio. There was a cigar bar, too. “We really enjoyed creating a wedding that was us,’’ Katey says. It was a hit with guests, too, and the pizza was perfect for a midnight snack. Their theme was that of a chic garden party. CAT CAKE Levi's grandma Lillian used to make wedding cakes so she created a single tier to cut for pictures. “We topped it with beautiful fresh flowers, a cake topper, and most important, a laser cutout of a black cat to symbolize our cat, Penny.’’ TOO MANY TO COUNT There were many sweet moments and some hysterical ones, too, like the speech by Justin, one of Katey’s protective older brothers. But they’ll never forget the moment they exchanged cards before their
first look. “It was such a real, raw moment. The cards sent us over the edge,'' Katey said. "There were laughs, smiles and tears. It was really the last time to pour our hearts out to one another before officially becoming husband and wife. We'll never forget that feeling.'' COOKING UP A STORM They’ve loved using all the cookware, gadgets and utensils received as wedding gifts. A grill from Katey’s parents has been a lot of fun. “Levi is such a fantastic cook. It has been really awesome to watch him put his skills to the test and become a grill master. We are foodies who love to entertain, so we are extremely appreciative of receiving all that we did." STRESS IS OVER Bumps on the road are inevitable during the whole wedding process, Katey wants all brides to know. There's so much hype because of Pinterest, blogs, TV shows and movies, she says, that you think it's going to be all sunshine and roses. "While at times it was, there also were times it wasn't,'' she says. "Lean on your fiancé in the midst of it all and make decisions that make you happy as a couple.'' TIME TO GROW UP Their wedding seemed like their official transition into adulthood, they said, although Levi still loves his peanut butter and Katey is as competitive as ever at fishing. Levi says Katey has a beautiful heart and laughs at all of his jokes. Katey says Levi is charming and can talk to anyone. “I love her with all of my heart,’’ he says, “even if I do still come in second to the cat.’’

THE MARKLE EFFECT Bateau necklines, blusher veils and other details fit for the princess within T E X T MARJIE DUCEY
YOU AREN’T A FUTURE DUCHESS, you’re not marrying a prince, and you won’t live at Kensington Palace. But a wedding fit for a queen? It's in the realm of possibility! Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's wedding is the perfect example. What stood out to some Omaha wedding pros was not how ornate the event was but how the bride made the occasion her own. “She was true to herself, which is what you want to be on your wedding day,’’ says Jocelyn Robertshaw of Ready or Knot {Wedding Chic}. Here's a recap of the highlights, plus some speculation on trends — just in case you want to unleash your inner princess.
the dress
Meghan wore an elegant but minimal gown by Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy Couture. Shannon Wiebe of Blush Bridal in Lincoln wasn’t surprised by the simple styling. Neither was Robertshaw. “A clean gown is really coming into style,'' Wiebe says. TREND WATCH: Meghan’s sister-in-law, Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge, started a trend with the long-sleeved dress she wore for her wedding in 2011. Expect the same for Markle’s bateau neckline.

the veil
See how to get the look, page 64
Meghan’s 16-foot silk tulle veil paid homage to all 53 Commonwealth countries with a hand-embroidered flower from each. “I love using an intricate veil with a more simple dress,’’ says Wiebe. “It makes a statement when the lace or beading pops against it.’’ It also helps to have a long aisle, such as St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, where the royal wedding was held. But Omaha does have churches well-suited for cathedral trains! TREND WATCH: The blusher veil could make a return, Robertshaw says. It's been around for centuries and at one time was a symbol of modesty and purity. The lifting of the blusher — as Harry did for Meghan— served as an “unveiling’’ of the bride to her groom. “It was a really cool moment when Harry lifted that veil,’’ Robertshaw says.

the jewelry
A priceless diamond bandeau tiara loaned from the Queen of England as your headpiece isn't likely unless you find yourself marrying into the royal family. But Meghan's wedding jewelry? Borsheims has similar styles from Cartier, including diamond chandelier earrings that will set you back $68,000. TREND WATCH: Cushion-cut diamonds and other gems from Botswana and the Kalahari region. Couples already are showing interest, says Adrienne Fay, marketing director for Borsheims. Aquamarine gemstones also are getting second looks, thanks to the ring that Meghan wore from the collection of Harry’s late mum, Princess Diana.

the bouquet
Ann Etienne of Voila Blooms in Dundee was struck by Meghan's diminutive bouquet. “It was so petite and so pretty.’’ Most U.S. brides carry bouquets two to three times larger. But Etienne thought the nosegay went perfectly with Meghan’s simple and elegant dress. “Any other style would not have blended as well as this did,’’ she says. Prince Harry handpicked stems from the royal gardens at Kensington Palace. The mix included sweet peas, lily of the valley, astilbe, jasmine, astrantia and forget-me-nots. In keeping with royal tradition, sprigs of myrtle — a symbol of hope and love — were tucked in as well. Forget-me-not would be astronomical to purchase here, Etienne says. Greenery accented with white, though, is extremely popular with local brides. Ditto for cream and blush tones.

TREND WATCH: Unconstructed bouquets with lots of movement. Think loose and airy, Etienne says. Wiebe, of Blush Bridal, thinks couples might take a cue from the royal couple and donate their wedding flowers after the ceremony. “There are so many different things you can do with things from your wedding that would be beneficial to other people,’’ she says.
the groom
It’s only once in a blue moon that Sunny Seldera sees a tux and tails like soccer great David Beckham wore to the royal wedding. But Seldera, a wardrobe consultant at Men’s Wearhouse, says because of Omaha’s proximity to Offutt Air Force Base, he often sees men wearing a uniform as Prince Harry and Prince William did.
GETTY IMAGES
the wedding party
Attendants in British royal weddings tend to be children and not adult friends as is done in the United States. Wiebe doesn’t see that catching on anytime soon in the Midwest. TREND WATCH: Smaller bridal parties — even in Nebraska where couples tend to have several attendants. That keeps the focus on the bride and means less stress the day of the wedding, Wiebe says.
TREND WACH: Suits and less formal attire that can be worn again. Currently popular: a two-button single-breasted jacket with flat-front trousers, Seldera says. Blues and grays dominate. GETTY IMAGES
the cake
Meghan and Harry’s lemon elderflower cake with buttercream frosting and fresh flowers was understated and a bit simple for cake designer Naomi Jamerson of the Cake Gallery. Will and Kate’s cake, with its 26 tiers, European-style pipework and symbolic decorations, was much more interesting. The Cake Gallery even replicated the fruit cake for a local couple using almond with marzipan filling provided by the bride's grandmother.
GETTY IMAGES
TREND WATCH: Marbled fondant and edible lace tiered cakes. Inspiration for the latter is coming from the lace pattern in the bride's dress. weddingessentialsmagazine.com 63

is a significant investment. What will
become of yours? Regardless of the answer, having your bridal gown professionally cleaned immediately after the wedding is a smart idea. “You wouldn’t believe what the insides of some gowns look like,” says Vikki Reed of Omaha Lace Cleaners, specialists in gown and formal wear cleaning and preservation. Between self-tanning lotions and perspiration, linings can become badly soiled, she says. Hemlines tend to take a beating as well. Tears and snags are common, especially in tulle. “There are certain things we just can’t fix," she says. "A tear in tulle is one of them. You can’t just sew it up; you can see it (the repair) and it looks terrible.” Outdoor weddings can take their toll on hemlines, with dust and grime the biggest offenders. Illusion sleeves, backs and bodices sometimes come in damaged, too. “Illusion lace is super delicate. You can poke your finger through it in two seconds,” Reed says. If you’re planning to resell your gown or preserve it for a future generation, a talented seamstress may be able to rebuild a damaged section using replacement fabric specially ordered from the manufacturer. Dresses with romantic embroideries and intricate beading receive an extra dose of TLC. "We literally hand-clean those areas with a tiny brush," Reed says. "After we’ve hand-cleaned, we wetclean or dry-clean the dress. But before a dress goes through the automated process, buttons and other super-delicate areas are protected with linen. Gown specialists, in some extreme situations, may even need to remove and re-apply bead work. "We can’t take a chance that the dress will snag itself." There can be five hours involved in cleaning a heavily beaded gown, Reed says. "It's tedious. A basic dress is a two- to- threehour process. "
TYPES OF SERVICES Prices for basic gown cleaning and preservation start at about $330, Reed says. Expect to pay more for a high-end designer gown because of the added liability to the dry cleaner. As a general rule, you should allow three weeks for any service. "But we can work with you," Reed says.
CLEAN-ONLY Recommended for a gown that has been purchased from a sample rack, as well as a destination wedding dress that will be worn again for a local reception.
WOWFACTORE Weddings Designed to Wow! wowfactore@gmail.com www.wowfactore.com
STEAM- OR PRESS-ONLY Perfect for when a new dress has been in a closet for a few weeks and wrinkles and creases haven't fallen out. CLEAN AND PRESS/STEAM Recommended if you plan to resell or loan the gown.
2052071-01
CLEAN AND REPAIR/RESTORE Worthwhile for a vintage or antique dress that has yellowed but is still in good condition. "We’re able to get many vintage gowns back to their original color," Reed says. "I’ve seen our gown specialist work wonders." CLEAN AND PRESERVE When you love your dress enough to keep it forever. Preservation is done with the same museum-quality process used by the Smithsonian Institution, Reed says. The gown is placed in acid-free tissue in an acid-free box, and gloves are provided for future handling. "The worst way you can store a gown on your own is in a plastic bag in your closet," Reed says. "Plastic is terrible because the fabric can’t breathe. It inevitably is going to yellow and any unseen stains are going to start showing. Eventually, the fabric will become so fragile, it will disintegrate."
OUT, DAMN SPOT! Stains and what you should do to minimize the damage: 1. Food, wine or other beverage, blood: Don’t rub the stain. Blot with a soft cloth and water (but only use water if your dress is polyester or something other than silk). 2. Lipstick or other makeup, grease, grass: Dab with a high-quality spot remover — a must-have for your day-of emergency kit. Omaha Lace Cleaners recommends Shout Wipe & Go towelettes. 3. Bring the gown in to be cleaned as soon after the wedding as possible and alert the gown specialists to the stain or spot.

REAL WEDDING
jocie & owen BRETT BROONER PHOTOGRAPHY · JANUARY 20, 2018 · FOUNDERS ONE NINE
IT WAS A NO They met their senior year at Elkhorn High but Jocie says it wasn’t love at first sight. In fact, Jocie said no when Owen asked her to prom. “Boy, do I regret that!" She did say yes to a fraternity camping trip in 2012 and by the end of that summer they were inseparable. BIG RED MOMENT The couple held a huge bonfire and cookout for the NebraskaWisconsin football game in 2016. Owen brought everyone into the garage, and Jocie knew her life was about to change. “Owen began telling me how much I meant to him and then he got down on one knee and asked, ‘Will you marry me?’ With tears in my eyes, I screamed yes. It was the perfect way to celebrate the beginning of our future together.’’ TOASTY THEME Because January can be cold and snowy, they wanted an atmosphere of romance and warmth for their wedding. Josie envisioned a candlelight reception and greenery mixed with blush and ivory roses and berries. The night was magical and unforgettable, Jocie says. Owen started off the day with flowers and a note delivered to Jocie while she was getting ready with her bridal party. “It was the ‘aha’ moment that I was going to marry the man of my dreams.’’ GREEN ACRES IS THE PLACE TO BE Owen’s extended family surprised the couple with farm-themed props – bandanas, mustaches, cowboy hats, cut-out chickens and more. It's become a family tradition because Owen's uncle is president of Oriental Trad-
ing Company, and it was perfect because the couple lives on a farm. A cousin even put on a chicken costume and stole the show. “Our band played the Chicken Dance, which was definitely a memory that will last a lifetime,’’ the bride says. The couple didn’t plan on a dollar dance, but when the band scheduled it for them, they loved the one-on-one time with their guests. NATIVITY SCENE It was their favorite gift and they’ll think about their wedding every time they set it up at Christmas. SPECIAL MOMENT The party bus was late but that gave Jocie and Owen some time alone at Memorial Park before everyone arrived for pictures. “We were able to pray together and soak up the first minutes as husband and wife. I remember truly thanking God for answering all of my prayers. We also got some great pictures,’’ Jocie says. The newlyweds drove themselves to the park in a 1951 truck that belonged to Owen's grandpa, who had passed away shortly after they got engaged. Owen and his dad and brothers spent 15 months refurbishing it. "We dreamed of having it as our 'getaway truck,''' Jocie says. FAMILY MAN Jocie says Owen is hard-working, caring and family-oriented, which is wonderful since they are expecting their first child this winter. Owen says Jocie is caring and loving and always finds a way to make him laugh. “I could not be happier with the woman she is and the family we will raise together.’’

8 TIPS FOR A
MEMORABLE ENGAGEMENT SHOOT AT HOME T E X T MARJIE DUCEY P H OTO G R A P H Y RACHEL WAKEFIELD
If your home brings you joy, an engagement shoot there can lead to some great pictures. For starters, it's a highly personalized setting. Every house is different. And you can’t beat the weather – because it's always lovely inside. “Overall, it’s intimate," says photographer Rachel Wakefield. "It’s nice light. It’s trendy.’’
98
SUMMER 2018 weddingessentialsmagazine.com
1.Your house doesn’t have to be a palace. It’s all about showing you in a space where, hopefully, as a couple you feel the most comfortable. It’s actually more important that you have good lighting than amazing decor. Natural light is a photographer's dream. 2. Every room doesn’t have to be perfect. Just make sure the house is clean and doesn’t feel cluttered. Nothing distracts from a good photo like dust on shelves, tabletops or floors. 3. Move from room to room. Wakefield likes to start in the kitchen, where couples tend to be most relaxed. She’ll then move to the living room or a spot where the couple likes to hang out. The bedroom is also a possibility if she gets a playful or carefree vibe from the couple.
Have a destination wedding without leaving town. Say, “I do” at the Zoo. Celebrate your day in the newly completed Education Conference Center at the Suzanne and Walter Scott Aquarium, featuring a 24’ tropical reef aquarium. For rental details, call (402) 738-2088.
4. Share your interests or the fun things you collect with your photographer. Wakefield once captured a coffee-loving couple dancing in the kitchen and another who love playing tag. 5.Try different poses. For your living room shots, try lying on the floor, putting your feet on the wall, cuddling or lying on the couch. In the bedroom, a couple might have a pillow fight, interact with their dog or sit on the edge of the bed and play footsie. Nothing too intimate. 6. A home shoot can be just the first step. Wakefield recommends getting some shots outdoors for variety. "If you can find a cool location that is different from what everyone is shooting, it creates more interesting art,’’ she says. 7. Home shoots aren’t just for engagements. Wakefield loves returning for anniversary shoots. “I can sense more depth to the session.’’ 8. What's the next big thing in engagement photography? Maybe an unexpected place as a backdrop, such as a vintage shop or a tennis court, Wakefield says. “I just had a friend do a grocery store shoot. It’s fun to push your creative boundaries."

THAT PERSONAL TOUCH Dance party in the kitchen? So. Adorable. T E X T MARJIE DUCEY P H OTO G R A P H Y RACHEL WAKEFIELD
EMILY WAKEFIELD LOVED THE PERSONAL TOUCH. The engagement photos shot at home with now-husband Colt Wakefield reflect their lives more than anything that could have been taken at popular spots such as the Gene Leahy Mall or the Old Market, she says. “I feel like it’s more sentimental.’’ Sister-in-law Rachel Wakefield captured the images last winter. It was cold and blustery outside, and Emily and Colt didn’t like the idea of a barren landscape as a backdrop. The couple love houseplants, so the trio headed to Mulhall's for the first half of the two-hour shoot. Emily and Colt cavorted through one of the greenhouses as Rachel snapped away. You can barely tell they were inside. “With us in front of the leaves, it looks outdoorsy,’’ Emily says. For fun, the couple brought home a crazy-hair plant as a memento. They admit to attracting curious onlookers at the greenhouse – another reason Emily recommends a photo shoot at home. “You feel more relaxed,’’ she says. Colt was the first to move-in to what Emily calls their “super cute’’ duplex near Bennington. There wasn’t much furniture yet, so they just focused on shots in the kitchen and living room. The couple both savor coffee, so Rachel took pictures of them with a French press. Then they got goofy, and staged their own dance party. In the living room, they incorporated an Aztec rug that Emily treasures. Great lighting and white walls provided the perfect backdrop. The pictures were shot at sunset, giving them a warmer tone. The process was so comfortable, Emily sometimes forgot it was a photo shoot. Emily and Colt avoided Nebraska’s capricious weather, Emily says, and got some adorable shots of their first home together. “It’s fun to have those pictures,’’ Emily says. She and Colt were married in April 2018.
