REAL WEDDING

MAE SMALL PHOTOGRAPHY ·

OCTOBER 1, 2016 ·

HOORAY FOR HAWKEYES The couple met while tailgating at a University of Iowa football game in Iowa City. They spent the next few weeks texting and talking over the phone before meeting in Des Moines, the halfway point between their homes. “That was five years ago, and we’ve been inseparable ever since,” says McKenzie. CHAMPAGNE, SUNRISE ’TIL SUNSET McKenzie proposed during a trip to Captiva Island, where they stayed at a family friend’s house to celebrate Sam’s 29th birthday. The couple celebrated the rest of the day with champagne on the beach. BY THE BOOK As McKenzie was reading her emotional vows to Sam, not an eye in the house was dry. To lighten the mood, Sam said, “I don’t know how I am going to follow that up,” and then proceeded to unfold an entire book of vows. “It was typical Sam to lighten the mood and get everyone smiling,” McKenzie says. CASUAL FARE The couple had pizza delivered for their reception and then offered a s’mores bar as a late-night snack. “Our guests ate it up… literally!” McKenzie laughs. ALL SMILES Sam was nervous

OMAHA COUNTRY CLUB

she would trip as she headed down the aisle, but as soon as she saw McKenzie, all her worries evaporated. “I could not stop smiling. My cheeks even started to hurt. She was glowing and looked absolutely perfect.” Sam experienced something similar. “I never knew how amazing it would truly feel to call McKenzie my wife. I honestly smile every time I think about it.” A LITTLE HELP FROM THEIR FRIENDS The couple enlisted people they love to help with the wedding. Their wedding coordinator was their bridesmaid, and their hair and makeup stylists, DJ and videographer were all close friends. “We felt so taken care of and had a blast!” says McKenzie. A LESSON WELL-LEARNED “Don’t stay up until 1 a.m. drinking champagne and Coors Light the night of your rehearsal dinner,” cautions McKenzie. “You have a long day ahead of your tomorrow and need your sleep!” SHIH TZU (AND BROTHER) TO THE RESCUE The ring bearer, McKenzie’s nephew, was only 2, so her brother helped walk him down the aisle. The couple’s lovable pup, Gizmo, made sure they both made it.

STEP ONE Figure out how much rope you'll need. Cut each strand four times your desired height. Then fold it in half and loop it around a wooden dowel. Repeat for each strand, placing them 2 inches apart. We used 200 yards of rope, cut into 20 30-foot strands, folded in half, to create a 7½-foot backdrop.

An Unforgettable Event

The Players Club Golf & Country Club

STEP TWO Start knotting. Make a row of basic double-knots (like tying your shoe) on each strand duo. Tighten the knots as close to the dowel as you want. We tied ours about an inch away from it. TIP: Secure the dowel to a wall as you tie your knots. This makes it easier to tighten them.

STEP THREE Make a square knot. Using four strands, take the rope on the far left and lay it over the middle two and weave it under the strand on the far right. Then, take the rope on the far right and bring it under the two in the center and through the loop on the left. Pull tight. Repeat to complete the square.

The absolute best in gown care.

STEP FOUR Add more square knots. We doubled up ours and then worked our way across the dowel to make a full row. TIP: Double, triple or even quadruple a row of square knots to change up the pattern.

STEP FIVE Get creative with your pattern. We continued adding rows of double-square knots, and alternated starting two strands from the edge, to create a diamond pattern. To finish, we tied another row of basic double-knots and cut the ends to even out the bottom.

PATRIOTIC SPIRITS The couple met during happy hour. “She liked the American flag jean jacket I wore with my boots, and I approved of her sincere appreciation for fine whiskey!” recounts Elliott. “After all,a she is a country girl! What isn’t there to like?” As for Brittany, she says, “He is the most patriotic person I’ve ever met. For heaven’s sake, he has a giant 4-foot rooster painted like an American flag in his living room!” NUPTIAL POLITICS When Elliott’s younger brother gave the “best dude” speech, he violated the social rule to steer clear of politics with Donald Trump signs and custom Koozies that said, “Make Marriage Great Again.” Cracks Brittany, “Don’t plan a wedding during an election!” FAMILY DANCE “We had a ‘Team Huddle’ dance where Britt and I danced with my 3-year-old daughter, Brynley. When the DJ put on her favorite song, ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry’ by Frankie Valli, her lit-up expression and reaction of utter excitement was priceless.” IDEA WORTH STEALING “Open bar... All. Night.” WEDDING-DAY JITTERS Elliott confesses he was “nervous as hell” before the wedding. He couldn’t eat that morning and paced relentlessly as

SCOTTISH RITE MASONIC CENTER

the photographer arrived. “I bet I attempted to make my hair look just right at least a dozen times. I probably wasted half of my brand-new canister of 1821 hair spray!” Once he spied his bride, the butterflies subsided. WHAT HE SAYS ABOUT HER “My best friend, my love, my life … and now my wife!” WHAT SHE SAYS ABOUT HIM “My partner in crime for the rest of time!” ALWAYS SEE THE BRIGHT SIDE The couple says to remain optimistic, no matter what wedding glitches arise. “If the s’mores bar goes up in flames, more people can roast marshmallows!” ADVICE FOR BRIDES-TO-BE “Pick a husband who takes a genuine interest – borderline obsession – in the big day.” IT’S ALL IN THE NUMBERS Now that the big day is over, Brittany and Elliott like the change in math. “We’re counting up now, instead of counting down!” WEDDING GIFT TOSS-UP The couple’s favorite wedding gifts are both residential: a door knocker engraved with their name for a future first home and a fish condo for Gil. IDEA WORTH STEALING The couple planted a tree to celebrate their unity ceremony.

TRENDING

Wedding florals are trending green and wild for 2017. Maybe that’s no surprise, given that “greenery” is Pantone’s color pick of the year. The look is loose and organic as couples embrace eucalyptus in runners, garlands and bouquets. Available in three varieties – seeded, silver dollar and baby blue, eucalyptus works for all styles of weddings and looks great with most color themes. But you’ll find so much more in the greenery department for seriously gorgeous décor. Let the foraging begin!

PRO TIP Big, full garlands down the centers of long tables may look sensational on Pinterest, but you’ll pay a pretty penny for just one, says Tracy Diehl of Events Etcetera. “They can run $26-plus per foot, and when you need 30 to 40 feet, the sticker shock hits.” Her suggestion: overlap loose greens down the center of your table and randomly tuck fresh blooms along the entire length. “While it’s not exactly the same look, it’s very close, and the cost savings in greenery can be significant.”

BACK TO NATURE Inspiration for that gorgeously organic, minimally styled look: • Drape a chandelier or other hanging light fixture with bunches of seeded eucalyptus, wispy olive branches or bold clusters of hops. Bonus: Hanging greenery makes a room feel larger by drawing the eye upward. • Run eucalyptus down the center of a table, allowing stems to cascade to the floor on each end. Spike the length with randomly placed fresh blooms for color. You can also tuck in herbs for aroma and add moss and ferns for texture. Supply shimmer with candlelight. • Drape an arbor with a garland of seeded eucalyptus. • Weave olive branches through the lattice of a trellis. • Carry a bouquet of silver dollar eucalyptus spiked with a few fresh blooms. We love the asymmetrical drama that ruby red ranunculus provides. • Trim the tiers of your wedding cake with sprigs of olive leaves. • Suspend a greenery installation from the ceiling as a backdrop for your vows, cake or photo booth. • Crown your head with a greenery wreath. • Accent the backs of chairs with eucalyptus or boxwood. • Decorate a place setting with an olive sprig. • Create a small hand-tied bouquet for a flower girl using rosemary and sage cuttings coupled with two or three peonies from the garden. • Weave a wild vine arch as a wedding arbor. • Place spare cuttings of greenery in bottles or bud vases as random accents.

HERBS ADD SENTIMENT Draw inspiration from Victorian brides and carry a bouquet of fresh herbs on your wedding day. In addition to the subtle aroma, each one provides lovely symbolism. • Lavender – luck and devotion • Rosemary – remembrance • Sage – long life • Thyme – courage • Mint – tranquility

LaBENZ PHOTOGRAPHY ·

JULY 6, 2016 ·

CAN YOU GIVE ME A LYFT? As Ben was driving from Lincoln to Omaha to pick up Brooke for a blind date, his brakes locked up on the Interstate. He called and asked her to pick him up at a rest stop. Annoyed and nervous, Brooke spent 40 minutes stopping at each exit between the two cities, trying to find him. After dinner and some time spent with friends in Omaha, Brooke drove Ben back to Lincoln. She was sure they wouldn’t see each other again. SECOND TIME’S A CHARM After their lackluster date, Ben called Brooke to ask random questions. Did he leave his keys in her car? Did he leave his phone charger at her friends’ place? He wore her down for a second date. That one clicked. Afterward, Brooke called her mom to say perhaps he was “The One.” PUBLIC PROPOSAL Ben and Brooke are both shy, private people, so she was unsuspecting when he invited her to TD Ameritrade Park Omaha to see a project his company had undertaken. It was a ruse. Ben dropped to one knee in front of the iconic “Road to Omaha” sculpture with cars honking and people shouting their approval as he popped the grand question. MATRIMONIAL MUSICAL CHAIRS At the reception, the DJ enlisted the bridal party in a game that involved completing several tasks before sitting in a chair. Challenges included finding someone with an outof-state ID, getting strangers to take selfies and coaxing lipstick from a woman, then applying it on an unwitting

LAURITZEN GARDENS

male guest. After each task, the DJ removed a few chairs. “It was absolutely hysterical!” recalls Brooke. ALL THAT GLITTERS The bride fell in love with the way Piccolo’s Florist incorporated big leaves into arrangements, so she made gold leaves her signature wedding detail. They made an appearance in everything from her bridal bouquet to the couple’s guestbook table. INFORMAL FUN The couple rejected high-end dining for celebrations that better aligned with their laid-back personalities. Their rehearsal dinner was at Dave & Buster’s, and Runza catered the late-night reception snack. WEDDING DAY WIGGLE ROOM Brooke advises trying on your wedding dress and all accessories in advance to gauge how much time it will take to get ready come wedding day. When her mother attempted to loop the buttons, she realized they didn’t stretch. A frantic scramble ensued to get ready on time. “Forty-five minutes later and three people constantly working on my buttons, I was finally dressed and ready to get married!” DIY I DO’S Brooke and Ben eschewed traditional wedding gifts such as fine china and cut crystal and requested Lowe’s gift cards instead. “Ben and I purchased our first home a little over a year ago, and we thought we might as well gut and remodel our basement and kitchen. We got a little too excited and sort of forgot about how much everything was going to cost, so the gift cards helped tremendously.”

TEXT KIM CARPENTER

Italian, Mexican, barbecue. These are the kinds of fare that folks love to grab from food trucks during late nights on the town. Why should brides and grooms be any different? Increasing numbers of food trucks are rolling up for marital celebrations, and not just for midnight snacks at receptions. They’re gaining traction for bridal showers, bachelor parties, rehearsal dinners and even reception meals. Amy Collins and Deanna Jones, co-owners of the Mosaic Pickle, an Omaha food truck specializing in Mexican and Asian fusion, say their wedding bookings have quintupled since opening in 2012. “We’ve only just seen weddings really take off in the past two years,” Jones says. “We have bookings into 2017 and early 2018.” Other food trucks are seeing similar interest. Hannah Garrido, who opened The Churro Truck in spring 2016, says weddings account for about 40 percent of her business. Why the spike? We break down the hot trend and fill you in on what to know before you book a food truck of your own. THEY’RE INFORMAL When the more button-down part of the wedding is over, food trucks let guests loosen ties and kick off shoes. “They’re for when you want to have a good time and grab something before heading home,” says Brandon Hahn, special projects manager at La Casa Pizzaria. “Food trucks are perfect for after-parties when everyone’s still having a good time,” agrees Garrido. That element of spontaneity amplifies the party vibe. “Food trucks just add an element of fun,” Jones says. THEY ROLL UP AND STAND OUT Food on the go provides a fresh new way to celebrate nuptials, and the soon-to-wed set is noticing. Kelly Partusch, owner of 402 BBQ Food Truck, says her clients tend to stand apart from the pack. “The couples who hire us are not usually your traditional, mainstream brides and grooms. They’re a bit trendier, a little hipper. That’s reflective of the food truck experience.”

THEY’RE INEXPENSIVE Food trucks offer a financially appealing incentive: they’re affordable. “Probably 90 percent of our couples are paying for their own weddings,” says Partusch. “They have to keep costs low. Since a large part of our menu is pork, which is a lot less expensive than beef, we’re affordable.” Jones sees the same thing with her clients. “A lot of young couples are paying for their own weddings. They want to be trendy, but they have a tight budget.” Prices can start as low as $5 to $8 per menu item and run anywhere from $300 to $500 for two hours, depending on the truck. Check with vendors on pricing options. THEY OFFER FLEXIBILITY Food trucks offer a wide range of cuisine. Although they often boast their own specialty, they also function a bit like mini caterers by letting wedding couples customize selections. Jones says one of the Mosaic Pickle’s favorite choices is off-menu. Way off. “We get a lot of requests to make favorite childhood recipes like grandma’s lasagna or Salisbury steak. If a couple wants it, we’ll make it.” Similar flexibility exists for serving. Guests can queue for food at the truck, get in line for a buffet or gather around lounge furniture or cocktail tables while servers make the rounds with trays. “We’ve done full sit-downs and served straight from the truck,” says Partusch. THEY FEED A CROWD It might be just one vehicle, but a lone food truck can accommodate a crowd of up to 400, depending on the menu. Garrido recommends selecting four to six items per person. CAVEAT: CLEAR IT WITH YOUR VENUE FIRST Just because couples and their guests love food trucks doesn’t mean vendors will. Check with your reception venue before booking a food truck to make sure they’re allowed. Some welcome them, but others require all food served on site to come from their own kitchens. PLAN WELL IN ADVANCE Food trucks are gaining in popularity – and not just for weddings. They’re in demand for corporate happenings, charitable events, graduations and festivals. “We get anywhere from five to 10 requests a day,” Hahn says. “Let us know as far in advance as you can, so we can plan and schedule accordingly.”

REAL WEDDING

BEN RAMOS PHOTOGRAPHY ·

AUGUST 27, 2016 ·

THE SISTERHOOD Griffin came with good references. Emily’s sorority sisters at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, where the two were sophomores, had introduced them. LAKESIDE ROMANCE Griffin caught Emily off-guard and proposed on the dock of his family’s lake house. “It was just the two of us, with no cameras and no one else around, making it the perfect intimate moment,” the bride says. “We finished the evening with a bonfire and s’mores on the beach.” WHO HAS THE RINGS? The rings went missing the day of the wedding. With only an hour to go until the ceremony, the couple realized the rings had been left at home. Two of the ushers ditched the church to retrieve them, leaving only one usher to escort their 250 guests. FAMILY TOGETHERNESS For the unity ceremony, the couple’s mothers each carried flowers in custom-made vases to the altar. The simple gesture symbolized the unity of the two families. MORE MAC AND CHEESE, PLEASE For their late-night snack, Emily and Griffin offered guests macaroni and cheese served in martini glasses. Toppings included buffalo chicken, sausage, green onion, bacon bits and peas. “The only complaint we received was that the bowls weren’t big enough!” FIRST TIME’S A CHARM Despite trying on at least 20 dresses, Emily’s first was her pick. “We all immediately knew that it would be hard to top.” DRESSED TO IMPRESS The couple held their first look

THE PELLA AT BLACKSTONE

at Elmwood Park’s pavilion. When Griffin saw Emily, he blurted, “Fancy!” TIMESAVING TIP Emily recommends creating an email account specifically for communicating with vendors, tracking registry items and managing RSVPs. “This will not only help keep things organized, but also allow you to devote a specific time each day toward wedding planning since you won’t be constantly distracted with wedding tasks filling up your personal email ‘in’ box,” Emily advises. MARITAL MISHAPS Emily and Griffin’s DJ went missing the week before the wedding. The day before, they discovered that their dinner menu had been changed and the pink glow-in-the-dark sunglasses printed with their names were forgotten under a table until the end of the reception. “Everything did not turn out as planned, but nobody noticed the last-minute changes. At the end of the day, you have to remember that marrying the love of your life is the only thing that matters on your wedding day!” ROLL THE DICE The couple received multiple board games as wedding gifts, one of which was custom-made. “We enjoy hosting game nights, so the new additions are perfect for our collection.” POETRY IN MOTION Griffin’s grandmother, Noanie, wrote an interactive poem that encouraged guests to sing along and celebrate special moments in the couple’s relationship.
