R
eal Weddings are, perhaps, the most popular feature of our bridal maga-
zine. Everyone loves a good story. Plus, there’s the fun of seeing what other brides have done, and how that compares or
contrasts with what you’re envisioning for your own wedding. We’ve dedicated nearly 20 pages to the real-life nuptials of six couples, each having a wonderfully unique story. When pouring through the photo submissions that we made our choices from, we were enthralled by the wide range of styles and personalities that each couple brought to their celebrations. Lauren pulled out all the stops for a wedding filled with pageantry and glitz (page 22), while Felicia’s theme took flight from her love of hot air balloons (page 38). My favorite, though, was the smallest affair – only 11 guests – in a quaint setting in southwest Iowa (page 32). For our own styled shoot (page 64), we were inspired by the popularity of “Downton Abbey” and the most recent remake of “The Great Gatsby.” This may have been our most ambitious photo session to date. At one point, we had 18 people on location with us in the Old Market! We collaborated with several talented vendors – much like you would when planning your own themed day. We’re always posting and pinning amazing events, on-trend tips and insider info to inspire you even further. Get your daily dose of everything bridal on our blog, too. Choosing Your Wedding
Selecting your wedding colors can be a dilemma. Here are five easy steps to finding your inspiration, assembling samples and editing your choices to arrive at the perfect color scheme.

1 Begin with what you love. • What colors are you drawn to most? • What colors do have in your home and your wardrobe?
Find your inspiration in places other than Pinterest. • Go to a garden center and look for color combinations in nature. • Browse the produce department at the supermarket or walk through a farmers market. What colors do you love in fruits and vegetables? • Visit a museum or gallery and note uses of color in paintings and other art. • Study family photos and keepsakes for colors that relate to your personal story.
3 Edit your choices. • What colors are best suited to the style of wedding that you want? • What colors coordinate best with your venue’s décor? The setting may well have the greatest influence on your final choices. If you have your heart set on certain colors, find a location that’s more neutrally decorated to avoid clashing with carpeting, drapes and in-house decorations. • If your ceremony and reception venues are different, consider two different color schemes. • If you can’t decorate the church, carry your color theme into your clothing and flowers. Eliminate any shades that are not flattering to all of your attendants. • Exact color matches are overwhelming. Opt for shade variations of the original colors. Rely on small touches for getting across the wedding color scheme rather than bold displays of it. Font and/or paper colors on invitations and other printed pieces and ribbons are easy ways to use your wedding colors subtly yet beautifully.

Pastels can appear too cold in winter and may be best for warm-weather seasons; red and green are associated with the holiday season and would look odd in July.

• Snap photos of things you love. • Collect items with colors you’re crazy about: magazine pages, restaurant cards, candy wrappers, movie tickets, flyers, scrapbooking paper. • Assemble all of these samples into a small scrapbook. Create a visual story – a feel for how you want your day to look. This will help your vendors as much as it helps you.

• Use your colors throughout your wedding for continuity. Start with your invitations. They're your guests' first clue to the style of your wedding. • Rely on small touches of the unexpected (think shoes) to get your colors across. • Don't forget the men. Vests and ties are easy places to extend your palette.

SMALL TOWN, BIG HEART The bride and groom are both from small towns (Lauren is from Osceola, Neb., and Justin is from Ulysses, Neb.), which meant all the more guests with 730 people attending. “Community, family and friends have always been important to us. We knew we wanted to have a big wedding surrounded by everyone who has been a part of our life and has watched us grow up through the years.” A "BLAZING" PROPOSAL Justin proposed on a family vacation in the Dominican Republic. The couple enjoyed a candle-lit dinner on the beach while a mariachi band played. After dinner, three fire dancers performed, one of whom had Lauren’s ring. “It truly was breathtaking. It was like a scene from ‘The Bachelor.’” BLING, ANYONE? Martini glasses were covered in gold crystal sugar for the cocktail hour, and “bling” flip-flops were provided for the dance floor, which was transformed into a club scene. UNFORGETTABLE The head table was raised on a stage, and it was decorated with several gold and crystal candelabra. The candelabra were connected with strands of crystals. Standing near the table was a 5-foot-tall wedding cake, which took four weeks to make. “It was royal and grand with ruffles, flowers and glitter. The Cake Gallery said it was the biggest and most beautiful cake that they had ever made.” weddingessentialsmagazine.com

03.02.13 First Central Congregational United Church of Christ; Livestock Exchange Building A “PAINFUL’’ PROPOSAL "At first I thought something was wrong with him – like he had tripped or hurt himself (when the groom got down on one knee). But then I figured out what was going on.” IT’S IN WRITING The groom wrote a long letter to the bride, and asked the photographer to deliver it to Nicole while she was getting ready for the wedding. “I carry it in my planner. It’s nice to pull it out and read it every once in a while.” TRIED-AND-TRUE ADVICE “There are plenty of things to ‘whack out’ about, however, none of them are worth ‘whacking out’ about in the end. It’s the fastest, blurriest, most exciting day of your life (or at least one of them). Try to take it all in.” PIECES OF FAMILY HISTORY For the reception, the bride traded her veil for a faux fur stole that her aunt made for her and a hairpiece made from her mom’s and both of her grandmothers’ wedding dresses. GROOM’S ONE REQUEST “He just wanted me to show up!”

05.18.13 Broadway United Methodist Church, Council Bluffs; St. Patrick’s Catholic Church hall, Neola, Iowa STEP RIGHT UP “I still can’t believe that we rode a Ferris wheel and fed each other funnel cake. I never in my life thought I would go to a carnival on my wedding day, but I did! Yep, we paid $8 to ride the Ferris wheel, but we did get to cut in line a little. I will never forget this!” GRADE “A” FUN The bride and groom are both teachers, so they decided to decorate the church and reception hall with chalkboard signs. IF IT WASN’T FOR CAR TROUBLE … The couple met through the bride’s cousin, who attended Wayne State College with Tim. A chance meeting took place when Tim helped fix the brakes on Lindsay’s car. THEY JUST COULDN’T HELP THEMSELVES Lindsay’s parents spied on the couple from the back door of their home when Tim proposed in their backyard. Tim had decorated the yard with white lights and vases of Lindsay’s favorite flowers. “It felt like a fairy tale.” VERY SPECIAL GUEST “My grandpa was diagnosed with lung cancer about a year ago. His goal was to make it to my wedding, so he battled chemo for several months. He danced all night! I felt so blessed that all of our prayers had been answered.”

AN "ANYTHING GOES" COLOR SCHEME “Whatever worked – although everyone opted for neutral and classic shades.” IN THE CLOUDS The couple met on a plane. The bride was flying from New York to Omaha to spend Christmas with her family. The groom was heading to the Midwest to be with his mom, who had suffered a heart attack. “Our flight lasted three hours, but it felt like 15 minutes. We were convinced that this was not our first time ever meeting. We bonded over some of life’s biggest questions, and felt unbelievably open in those moments.” SWEETEST MOMENTS “They really were all sweet. LIGHTING THE SKY Guests watched from the deck as fireworks lit up the sky over the golf course’s driving range after dinner. UP, UP AND AWAY The hot air balloon theme came from the couple’s love of the Nebraska Balloon & Wine Festival. D.I.Y. FRENZY The bride made jewelry for her bridesmaids out of vintage hot air balloon charms and flowers. She made a hot air balloon-shaped piñata for their engagement pictures. And she made hot air balloon boutonnieres, among other items. “We wanted to make our wedding day fun and unique.” NOT A DRY EYE IN THE ROOM “I recorded myself singing ‘Mama’s Song’ by Carrie Underwood, but I changed the words to fit the father/daughter dance. Everyone was tearing up, but my dad is hard-of-hearing so he couldn’t hear all the words. It was probably better that he couldn’t, because he would have been crying like everyone else.” NEW TRADITION The couple placed a wine bottle and letters to each other written the night before the wedding in a ‘vow box’ and sealed it. Every year on their anniversary, they will read the letters and drink the wine, and then they will repeat the tradition on their next anniversary. “We will keep all the letters in the vow box so we have written memories of our relationship as the years go by.”

A storm left the perfect amount of snow on the ground, but still allowed all 280 of the couple’s very special guests to arrive safely. YOUNG ROMANCE The couple met in middle school, but didn’t officially date until they were seniors in high school. "UNDER"-USUAL PROPOSAL Courtney accidentally found her engagement ring in John’s underwear drawer of all places. She was putting laundry away when she came across the little black box. “He tried to reach for it and we both caught eyes. Then he got down on one knee. He had wanted to propose in our new home (the couple had recently purchased a home together), so it worked out as planned.” CALM AS A CUCUMBER “I know brides are usually nervous, but I felt really calm when I went down the aisle and saw him.” MEANINGFUL GIFTS John had a jewelry box made and engraved for Courtney, which he filled with photos, and Courtney’s mom gave her her grandmother’s aquamarine ring.

WHAT YOU NEED 1. $15 cash or credit card (no personal checks) to pay fee for marriage license. 2. Cash to prepay for certified copies of the license ($5 each). A certified copy is required for the bride to change her name on her driver’s license and Social Security records. 3. Proof of identity/age: valid driver’s license, passport or certified copy of birth certificate. If either applicant is not of legal age (19), a notarized consent form must be signed by the applicant's father, mother, legal guardian or custodian. A license cannot be issued in Nebraska for anyone under age 17. 4. Social Security numbers for the bride and groom. 5. The names of applicants' parents (including mother’s maiden name), and parents' birthplaces (city and state or foreign country). 6. If either applicant has been married previously, the date the previous marriage ended will be needed (court date or date of death). GOOD TO KNOW A marriage license is good for one year from date of issuance anywhere in   Nebraska, and it may be used in any county in Nebraska. There is no waiting period.

The average cost of a U.S. wedding is $28,427, and in Nebraska, the average cost is $21,708 according to TheKnot.com. If you'll be purchasing mostly everything, here's what you can expect to pay.
Once you've set your wedding budget, you'll need to determine your spending priorities. After you've agreed on what's most important to you, use our flow chart to steer your dollars where they'll count the most. Where the money goes

If you could care less about it, why spend a lot of money on it? Here are ways to dramatically cut costs.
Rental for church or other ceremony site, $500 to $1,800.
Outdoor settings generally require fewer rentals and less decorating.
Choose an off-season date (October through April) for discounts.
Custom invitations for 250 to 400 guests, $4 to $10 per invite, plus save-the-date cards.
Opt for an intimate wedding, inviting only immediate family and close friends. Have an RSVP postcard to save on postage.
Limit your guest list to your immediate family and closest friends. Send out pre-made invitations. Ask guests to RSVP online or by phone.

Wedding photography is all about capturing moments and details of the day. Too many times, we’ve noticed, wellmeaning guests get in the way of the shot. It’s not intentional, of course. If you simply must take photos, be careful not to block the official photographer from a shot (first kiss, first dance, etc.) that the newlyweds expect. Use available light to prevent your camera’s flash from ruining the pro’s pictures in the same setting. Don’t make the wedding photographer dance around you. Crouching or standing in the aisle is distracting and can ruin an opportunity for a well-framed professional photo. Also, be aware that the red or green dot on your “zoom” button could show up in the photographer’s frames. Ask permission before posting pictures from the wedding on social media sites. Some couples will prefer to keep their wedding photos private.
