She turned to the sunlight and shook her yellow head, and whispered to her neighbor: “Winter is dead.” “Siamo come i fiori prima di vedere il sole a primavera...” cantava qualche anno fa Marina Rei. Ma, nonostante Burian, la rinascita è cominciata e la celebriamo con il primo numero del nuovo anno. Per me un numero che ha un significato particolare visto che, in copertina, anche se non faccio che guardarla perchè stento a credere ai miei occhi, c’è Pucci Papaleo. Mr. Daytona! - direte voi - ma, per me è qualcosa in più. E’ stato il mio mentore. Colui che mi ha insegnato a guardare gli orologi con un occhio diverso. La persona che mi ha insegnato questo mestiere e che mi ha consegnato nelle mani la rivista prima ancora che acquistassi la testata. Poi, certo, Pucci è - sicuramente - Mr. Daytona e non posso che essere davvero felice per il connubio con Aurel Bacs, altro grande Maestro per me. E quindi celebriamo questa primavera di conferme, come sicuramente sarà il successo della Geneva Watch Action: Seven e di nuovi progetti che profumano l’aria come i gelsomini nelle notti d’estate. Stay tuned. E wish me luck. “We are like flowers before we see the Sun in spring ...” sang a few years ago Marina Rei. But despite Burian, the rebirth has begun and we celebrate it with the first issue of the new year. A very special issue to me since, on the cover, although I keep watching it ‘cause I can hardly believe my eyes, there’s Pucci Papaleo. Mr. Daytona! - you may say - but, to me, he is much more than that. He is my mentor. The one who taught me to look at watches with a different eye. The person who taught me this job and that handed the magazine over to me long before I bought it. Then, of course, Pucci is – definitely - Mr. Daytona and I am really happy for the combination with Aurel Bacs, another great Maestro to me. And so let’s celebrate this spring of confirmations, as it will surely be the success of the Geneva Watch Auction: Seven as well as new projects that perfume the air like Jasmine on summer nights. Stay tuned. And wish me luck.

In questo numero colorato ed allegro come la Primavera alle porte, abbiamo voluto celebrare i volti famosi che hanno contribuito – e contribuiscono – non solo a dare notorietà ad un marchio, ma anche a conferirgli una certa personalità. É il caso dell’Omega per Tiffany & Co. appartenuto ad Elvis Presley, che verrà battuto in asta a Ginevra il 12 e 13 maggio prossimo durante la Geneva Watch Auction: Seven di Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo, ma anche di Tudor che ha individuato in David Beckham un esempio vivente di “born to dare”. E se SpeakeMarin può contare sull’elegante prestanza di Pierce Brosnam, John Dandi – un marchio di orologi-moda – si fregia del volto, e soprattutto della voce, di Mario Biondi. Tra i marchi innovativi ed indipendenti abbiamo voluto premiare l’audacia e la simpatia di 15:48, un marchio di orologi totalmente made in Italy di cui non potevamo non apprezzare la sartorialità. Infine, ma non per ultimo, vi chiedo di prestare attenzione allo shooting realizzato, anche questa volta, per OM da Roberta Stifini. Il perchè, permettetemi la suspence, ve lo spiegherò quando il loading di “The Corner” sarà completato. Ad maiora! In this issue, colorful and cheerful as the spring around the corner, we wanted to celebrate the famous faces who have contributed – and still do – not only to give notoriety to a brand, but also to give it some personality. It is certainly the case of the Omega for Tiffany & Co. owned by Elvis Presley, it will be auctioned in Geneva on 12 and 13 May during the Geneva Watch Auction: Seven held by Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo, but also of Tudor which identified in David Beckham a living example of “born to dare”. And if Speake-Marin can count on the prowess of Pierce Brosnam, John Dandy – a watch fashion brand – has the face, and especially the voice, of Mario Biondi. Among the innovative and independent brands we wanted to reward the audacity and the sympathy of 15:48, a watch brand totally made in Italy of which we immediately appreciated the tailoring spirit. Last but not least, I ask you to pay attention to the shooting made, once again, by Roberta Stifini for OM. As far as the reason, allow me some suspense, but I promise I’ll explain it as soon as the loading of “The Corner” will be completed. Ad maiora!

Fine& dandy “LIFE IS ABOUT MAKING YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE. WE ALL HAVE A DREAM. OURS BECAME TRUE ONE DAY WHEN OUR FIRST WATCH PROTOTYPE WAS BUILT. IT WAS 15:48 ON JANUARY 29TH, 2015. THAT’S HOW WE NAMED IT” by: fabiana romano

15.48 is an Italian industrial reality born from the idea of Massimo Bovera and Scilla Nascimbene, entrepreneurs from Pavia with a passion for watches, and thank to the vision of designers Marcello Pasotti and Manuela Cucchi, whom put black on white the ideas that spring from the minds of the two partners. 15.48 was also born thanks to Giuseppe Lama, watchmaker from Somma Vesuviana, whom has hand made the jumping hours complication. The jumping hours complications are created from scratch and, once mounted on the movement, are sent to Pavia where the final assembly of the watch takes place. This is a process which takes many hours of work and makes each movement a unique piece. Unique is also the ability to customize each15.48, thanks to the patented interchangeable cover and strap. The team has been inspired by another industrial sector where personalization is a luxury: tailoring. So the watch is dressed according to the customer, like a tailor made dress, and becomes a reflection of the style and mood of the customer himself. The savoir faire of 15.48’s artisans can transform a piece of fabric or material into watch straps and case covers to customize the precious watch.

15.48 è una realtà imprenditoriale tutta italiana nata dall’idea di Massimo Bovera e Scilla Nascimbene di Pavia con il pallino degli orologi e dalla visione dei designers Marcello Pasotti e Manuela Cucchi, che mettono nero su bianco le idee che scaturiscono dalla mente dei due soci. Il segnatempo 15.48 è nato anche grazie al maestro orologiaio Giuseppe Lama di Somma Vesuviana, che ha realizzato a mano il modulo ore saltanti. I moduli vengono creati partendo da zero e, una volta montati sul movimento, vengono inviati a Pavia dove avviene l’assemblaggio finale. Un processo che richiede molte ore di lavoro e che rende ogni movimento un pezzo assolutamente unico come unica è la possibilità di personalizzare il proprio orologio grazie al brevetto sviluppato da 15.48 per realizzare cover cinturini intercambiabili. L’ispirazione nasce dall’osservazione di un altro segmento industriale in cui la personalizzazione è sinonimo di lusso: la sartoria. Cosi l’orologio si veste secondo il desiderio del cliente, proprio come fosse un abito sartoriale, e diventa un riflesso del suo stile. Il savoir faire degli artigiani della maison è in grado di trasformare ogni tessuto o materiale in cinturini e cover della cassa per personalizzare i preziosi segnatempo. 67

Quella del curatore d’asta è una figura pressoché inedita nel mondo dell’orologeria, ma chi – meglio di Mr. Daytona – avrebbe potuto curare la Daytona Ultimatum? Come è nato questo progetto? Daytona Ultimatum è stata la naturale continuazione di un discorso iniziato tanti anni addietro con il libro Ultimate Rolex Daytona e continuato in anni di lavoro e passione. Dopo l’asta Winning Icons dello scorso Ottobre a New York, si è potuta osservare un’impennata ulteriore nell’interesse verso i Daytona e ci è sembrato il momento giusto per tornare su questo argomento con un evento dedicato, andando a cercare una serie di esemplari che rappresentassero il massimo oggi ottenibile, per ogni singola tipologia Daytona, in termini di rarità e stato di conservazione. Proprio il lavoro di selezione è stato il più difficile e appassionante, ma siamo sicuri che il risultato sarà assolutamente unico nel suo genere: un insieme di oggetti che potrebbero costituire una collezione da sogno! Sono passati cinque anni dalla prima asta monotematica Daytona e cresce l’apprezzamento da parte dei cultori di questo segnatempo che continua a fare la storia del marchio. Qual è il segreto di questo successo? Nel 2013 “Rolex Daytona Lesson One” segnò, assieme alla pubblicazione di Ultimate Rolex Daytona, un momento straordinariamente importante non solo per il mondo Daytona, ma per l’intero collezionismo orologiero. Se osserviamo bene quello che è successo da quel momento in poi, non possiamo non notare come sia avvenuta una vera e propria smitizzazione dell’orologio come oggetto di culto, legato esclusivamente alla meccanica, alle complicazioni, al blasone pluricentenario. Chi desidera, acquista, indossa, colleziona un Daytona, lo fa per il puro piacere di possedere un oggetto stupendo, di un grande valore intrinseco. Il fatto che siano in tanti a contendersi questi orologi fa si che le quotazioni siano in un continuo rialzo. Un fenomeno quindi recente? In realtà no! Se osserviamo il valore collezionistico dei Daytona a carica manuale e anche di alcuni automatici, non possiamo non constatare come la loro quotazione, dalla fine degli anni ’80 ad oggi, sia aumentata in maniera costante, senza mai neanche l’accenno ad una flessione. Nessun

altro oggetto, nessun investimento, ha mai osservato una crescita di così lunga durata parliamo ormai di trent’anni - e costante. Il Daytona ha cambiato il mondo del collezionismo orologiero? Penso che l’innovazione più importante che ha portato il Daytona, sia stata quella di aver spostato l’attenzione dei cultori, dal semplice oggetto al particolare. Abbiamo imparato che bisogna avvicinare lo sguardo all’orologio ed andarne a scoprire i segreti, le piccole varianti che cambiano l’insieme, le finiture visibili e anche quelle che il tempo ha provocato. Quando analizziamo il quadrante di un Daytona, ci comportiamo come se fossimo al cospetto di un grande dipinto d’autore, dove ogni singola pennellata non viene mai inserita per caso. Trovo che questo sia straordinariamente bello. È una particolarità esclusiva di questo modello? No. E’ una procedura di studio e di conoscenza che andrà applicata a tutta l’orologeria di qualità. Quello tra Phillips e Pucci Papaleo Editions è un binomio vincente: cosa dobbiamo aspettarci per il futuro? Non sappiamo cosa ci riserverà il futuro. Da sempre seguiamo solo la nostra passione e l’amore per la bella orologeria. Siamo e vogliamo restare degli entusiasti. La cosa che ci fa più piacere, è che sono sempre di più le persone che condividono questo nostro pensiero positivo.

That of having an auction curator is almost unprecedented in the world of watchmaking, but who, better than Mr. Daytona, could come up with the Daytona Ultimatum? How did this project start? Daytona Ultimatum was the natural continuation of a conversation started many years ago with the book Ultimate Rolex Daytona and continued through years of work and passion. After the auction Winning Icons of last October in New York, it has been possible to observe a further surge in interest in Daytona and it seemed the right time to come back to this topic with a dedicated event, and with a series of specimens which represent the maximum achievable today, for every single type of Daytona, in terms of rarity and condition. The selection process was the most difficult and challenging, but we are confident that the result will be absolutely unique: a collection of objects that could be a dream collection! Of course this will be accompanied by a catalog, photographed by Fabio Santinelli, that once again will raise the bar in terms of quality and originality of the iconographic capacity. It’s been five years since the first monothematic Daytona auction and over the time there has been a growing appreciation from the fans of this timepiece that continues to make the history of the brand. What is the secret of this success? In 2013 “Rolex Daytona Lesson One” marked, along with the publication of Ultimate Rolex Daytona, an extraordinarily important moment not only for the Daytona, but for the entire world of watch collectors. If you look at what happened from that moment on, we must note that there has been a sort of de-mything of the watch as an object of worship itself, based exclusively upon its mechanics, complications, and centuries-old blazon. Those who want, buy, wear and collect a Daytona, just do it for the pure pleasure of owning a gorgeous item of a great intrinsic value. The fact that many compete for these watches make quotations rise constantly. Is it a recent phenomenon, then? Actually no! If you look at the collectible manual winding Daytona and also some automatic, we can observe that their

listing, since the late 80’s to present, has increased steadily, without ever even the hint of a decline. Did the Daytona change the world of watchmaking collectibles? I think the most important innovation led by the Daytona, has been to have shifted the attention of scholars, from the object to details. We have learned that we must take a closer glance at the watch to discover the secrets, the small variations that change the whole, the visible finishing as well as those caused by the time. When we look at the dial of a Daytona, we act as if we were in front of a large famous painting, where each brush stroke is never inserted by accident. I find this extraordinarily beautiful. Is it an exclusive feature of this model? No. It is, actually, a process of study and knowledge which shall be applied to all quality watchmaking. The relationship between Phillips and Pucci Papaleo Editions is a winning combination: what shall we expect for the future? We don’t know what the future holds. We always follow our passion and love for beautiful watches. We are and we want to stay enthusiasts. What we like most is that there is an increasing number of people who start to share our positive thinking.

Some, though, believe Santa Cesarea Terme was named for a virtuous young maid of the time. In the story, Cesarea, who wished to become a nun, was forced to flee from her home to escape the incestuous advances of her father. After searching far and wide she found shelter in one of the caves. Not long after, the villainous father tracked her down but upon entering the cave, the wretch was swept away by the water and drowned and as his evil body decomposed it turned the water sulphurous as they still are nowadays...

Lange & Söhne Aurel Bacs e Wilhelm Schmid hanno annunciato l'asta 1815 "Omaggio a Walter Lange" con cassa in acciaio e quadrante in smalto nero. Il ricavato sarà devoluto alla Children Action Foundation il cui motto è "ogni bambino ha diritto all'infanzia". Il prezzo di vendita risultante dall'asta sarà completamente devoluto ai programmi chirurgici di Children Action che ha già portato a termine 12.482 operazioni. "Per noi è stato come mantenere intatte le intenzioni di Walter Lange. Tra i lotti che infiammeranno il cuore dei collezionisti durante la Geneva Watch Auction: Seven di Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo che si terrà il 12 e 13 maggio, ce n’è uno il cui valore economico è ben poca cosa rispetto al suo fascino. Parlo, ovviamente, dell’Omega per Tiffany & Co. in oro bianco 18kt appartenuto al Re del Rock and Roll. Elvis ricevette in regalo l’orologio dalla RCA Records, la sua casa discografica, per il conseguimento di un traguardo importante: la vendita di 75 milioni di dischi con le sue “Are You Lonesome Tonight” e “It’s Now Or Never”. Sul fondello un’incisione “Ad Elvis, 75 milioni di dischi, RCA Victor, 12-2560”. La stima per la vendita è tra i 50mila e i 100mila CHF. Ben poca cosa per portare a casa un pezzo di storia. La Rolls Royce Silver Cloud II è un’automobile prodotta dalla Rolls-Royce dall’aprile del 1955 al marzo 1966. In quel periodo era il modello di punta dell’azienda. Sebbene non ci fossero grandi differenze esterne alla Silver Cloud I, la Silver Cloud II era equipaggiato con un motore V8 da 6,2 litri e dal nuovo sistema di ventilazione. Un adattamento coupé è stato effettuato dalla Mulliner Park Ward con design 7504 per 98 esemplari di cui 72 con guida a sinistra. La vettura fotografata, prodotta nel 1962, è l’ultima di un piccolo numero di eleganti Silver Cloud II Cabrio prodotta per pochi fortunati e selezionati appassionati. Che sia in movimento o in mostra ad un concorso, gli storici generalmente considerano la rara Silver Cloud II con carrozzeria speciale, come la quintessenza del meglio del mondo Rolls-Royce: tecnica di livello superiore, qualità assoluta e design senza tempo. The Rolls Royce Silver Cloud II is an automobile produced by Rolls Royce from April 1955 to March 1966. It was the care model of the company during that period. Little changed externally from the Silver Cloud I but now equipped with a 6,2 litre V8 engine and new ventilation system. A convertible adaptation was made by Mulliner Park Ward with design 7504 for 98 examples which 72 left hand drive. The photographed car, built in1962, is the last among a small number of elegant Silver Cloud II Convertible produced for few lucky and selected people. “Houston, we’ve had a problem here” è una citazione entrata nell’uso quotidiano che indica l’insorgenza di una difficoltà improvvisa e dagli esiti difficilmente prevedibili. Ma alle 21.08 del 13 aprile 1970 quando l’astronauta Jack Swigert, membro dell’equipaggio dell’Apollo 13, comunica al quartier generale della NASA che c’è stato un problema, per l’equipaggio inizia un’odissea per rientrare sulla Terra che, per quattro giorni, tiene il mondo col fiato sospeso. A bordo c’è stata un’esplosione e la navicella, che avrebbe dovuto portare l’equipaggio sulla luna, perde rapidamente ossigeno. Per riportare (vivi) gli astronauti sulla Terra è necessario correggere la traiettoria della navicella: bisogna accendere il motore del modulo lunare per un determinato numero di secondi senza l’ausilio delle attrezzature di bordo. Non sono ammessi errori di misurazione del tempo. Nel film Apollo 13 – che nel 1995 racconta la vicenda sul grande schermo – è Kavin Bacon a calarsi nel personaggio di Jack Swigert e cronometrare i tempi dell’accensione manuale con lo Speedmaster in dotazione agli astronauti. THE APOLLO 13 CREW MEMBERS MANAGED TO RETURN TO EARTH AND NASA AWARDED OMEGA WITH THE “SNOOPY AWARD”, THE HIGHEST HONOR AWARDED BY NASA ASTRONAUTS. “Houston, we’ve had a problem here” is a common quote indicating the onset of a sudden difficulty for which the outcomes are difficult to predict. But at 9.08 pm of April 13th 1970, when the astronaut Jack Swigert, Apollo 13 crewman, communicates to the NASA headquarters that there is a problem, the crew begins an Odyssey to return to earth that, for four days, keeps the whole world with bated breath. An oxygen tank had exploded and the spacecraft, which was supposed to land on the Moon, quickly lost oxygen. To bring back (alive) the astronauts on earth it was mandatory to correct the trajectory of the spacecraft: the lunar module engine had to be turned on for a specified number of seconds without the use of the on board equipment. Timing errors are not allowed. In the movie Apollo 13 – that in 1995 brings the story on the big screen – it is Kavin Bacon to feature Jack Swigert and to time manual ignition with the Speedmaster chronograph supplied to the astronauts. To those hands are hung the hopes of the whole world. That watch shows, with its stunning accuracy, to be “the perfect companion of man in space”. Il segnatempo 15.48 è nato anche grazie al maestro orologiaio Giuseppe Lama di Somma Vesuviana, che ha realizzato a mano il modulo ore saltanti. I moduli vengono creati partendo da zero e, una volta montati sul movimento, vengono inviati a Pavia dove avviene l’assemblaggio finale. Un processo che richiede molte ore di lavoro e che rende ogni movimento un pezzo assolutamente unico come unica è la possibilità di personalizzare il proprio orologio grazie al brevetto sviluppato da 15.48 per realizzare cover cinturini intercambiabili. L’ispirazione nasce dall’osservazione di un altro segmento industriale in cui la personalizzazione è sinonimo di lusso: la sartoria. Pierce Brosnan ha scoperto il marchio Speake-Marin per la prima volta nel 2015 sul set del film, “The Survivor” nel quale interpretava il ruolo di un orologiaio londinese e per meglio calarsi nel ruolo aveva bisogno di qualche consiglio da un marchio di alta orologeria. Pierce Brosnan, che si descrive come un “amante degli orologi”, e Speake-Marin condividono gli stessi valori: eleganza, semplicità ed indipendenza. Da quel momento Pierce Brosnan and Speake-Marin traggono ispirazione l’uno dall’altro. Per l’ultimo servizio fotografico con la star di Hollywood, che ha avuto luogo a Londra nell’ottobre 2017, Speake-Marin ha scelto di collaborare con Marco Grob, talentuoso fotografo noto per la fotografia di ritratti e di persone. Per questi nuovi scatti, Speake-Marin aveva l’obiettivo di rinnovare l’immagine della marca con un mood più giovane ed impertinente. Pierce Brosnan, who described himself as a “lover of watches”, and Speake-Marin brand realised that they both share the same values: elegance, simplicity and independence. Since then, Pierce Brosnan and Speake-Marin keep drawing inspiration from each other. For the last photo shooting with the Hollywood star, which took place in London in October 2017, Speake-Marin chose to work with the talented Marco Grob, who is well-known for portrait and people photography. For these new shots, Speake-Marin had the objective to rejuvenate its brand image with younger and more impertinent clichés. Nella nuova campagna pubblicitaria Elsa indossa i panni di una spia italiana in missione in Sicilia, in particolare a Cefalù, dove percorre ogni angolo per confondersi con i suoi abitanti e fare propri i loro usi e costumi. Per questa campagna, Elsa Pataky è stata immortalata dall’obiettivo del fotografo Mario Sierra sotto la direzione artistica di Gallery Room. Berta Álvarez e la makeup designer Beatriz Matallana si sono occupate dello styling. L’intera campagna ricorda i valori mediterranei del marchio e li esalta attraverso gli scenari che percorrono ciascuna delle immagini. Gioseppo Woman continues to focus on Elsa Pataky as an Ambassador for the campaign spring/summer 2018. A lungo ho creduto che il Bourbon del Kentucky fosse l’alternativa americana al

Cognac francese. Il Cognac francese ha una storia leggendaria molto più annosa

di quella del Bourbon. Nel XVI secolo gli olandesi esportavano il vino dalla regione di Charente, in Francia, e spesso, durante il trasporto, il vino andava a male. Per porre rimedio a questa situazione, gli olandesi decisero di distillare il vino in acqua vite creando così un vino più stabile che, dopo una seconda distillazione, rendeva il prodotto ancora più gradevole. Nasceva così il brandy e solo il brandy prodotto nella zona di Cognac in Francia può essere legalmente chiamato Cognac. Composto principalmente da uva Ugni Blanc con un pizzico di Folle Blanch, le uve sono pressate e distillate due volte in pentole di rame. Dopo la distillazione vengono invecchiate in botti di rovere francese, raccolto nella Francia centrale. Il rovere più giovane impartisce note speziate mentre quello più vecchio conferisce profondità e carattere. L’invecchiamento del cognac è sottoposto a regole severe: il VS, ovvero VERY SPECIAL, è il cognac invecchiato almeno due anni, il VSOP ovvero VERY SUPERIOR OLD PALE è invecchiato almeno 4 anni, il Napoleon indica un cognac di almeno 5 anni di età e il XO (vieille reserve) ha tra 20 e 25 anni di media. La storia del Bourbon, invece, affonda le sue radici in Kentucky nel XVIII secolo. Spirito veramente americano, si pensa che il Bourbon debba il suo nome a Bourbon Street a New Orleans dove arrivava con le navi ed era considerato un’eccellente e assai più conveniente alternativa al Cognac. Anche il Bourbon ha requisiti molto rigorosi. occorre utilizzare almeno il 51% (ma non più del 79%) della miscela di mais fermentato e deve invecchiare in botti nuove di rovere americano carbonizzate. Sebbene non ci siano regole precise circa l’invecchiamento, lo Straight Bourbon deve essere stato invecchiato almeno 2 anni, ma se fossero meno di 4 va indicato in etichetta. Il risultato è un whiskey dolce leggermente piccante e fumoso distillato ad 80°. Oggi il bourbon sta vivendo una vera rinascita in America. Per molto tempo i distillatori hanno creato nuovi spiriti invecchiati più a lungo, single barrel ed altro ancora. I nuovi produttori stanno producendo a mano bourbons sperimentali con una miscela di mais, il mash bill, del 49% che può contenere segale, frumento o orzo. Per il nuovo anno, quindi, in alternativa al Cognac, provate il Four Roses Single Barrel, NV Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel Sour Mash Bourbon oppure il Knob Creek Single Barrel.
