Non potevamo non rendere omaggio a Rolex e alla sua lunga storia d’amore con il mare, né non sottolineare l’impegno di Oris per la salvaguardia dei nostri Oceani e, mio malgrado, vista la fobia per gli squali che condivido con mia sorella, non potevamo rimanere indifferenti al monito di Edox “Face your fears”! Prometto: farò del mio meglio! Tante rubriche, tanti volti, tante storie, ma mi preme sottolineare il progetto Phillips Perpetual e vi spiego perchè. Perchè, come mi ha detto Gaddo della Gerardesca durante un nostro incontro, in un processo di vendita dopo tutta la meccanica, tutta la sofisticazione, tutta l’ingegneria, nell’ultimo miglio, il mondo si fa antico e al centro di tutto resta l’uomo. Sarà che questa visione così umanistica a me piace e mi piace che Aurel e Livia abbiano voluto creare dei luoghi d’incontro per condividere le passioni. Luoghi in cui l’uomo torna al centro. In attesa che la boutique di Londra venga inaugurata, vi auguro buone vacanze e, quanto a me, wish me luck!

Chi mi conosce sa quanto ami il Made in Italy e quanto, per me, sia importante la sua tutela ad ogni latitudine. Non sorprenderà, quindi, che vi racconti la storia di Mantero, un’azienda familiare fondata nel 1902 da Riccardo Mantero la quale, da oltre un secolo, produce interamente in Italia, nella sua sede di Como, tessuti ed accessori tessili di lusso femminili e maschili e che, oggi, conta al suo attivo 426 dipendenti. Con più di 10.000 volumi, 60.000 foulards delle più prestigiose maison, migliaia di disegni realizzati a mano archiviati per tematica, carte prova, stampe su tessuto, tessuti uniti e jacquard, l’Archivio Mantero è oggi considerato uno degli archivi tessili più ricchi e straordinari al mondo. Chi mi conosce sa quanto sia stata sopraffatta dall’emozione nello scorprire che un’azienda così straordinaria abbia dato vita, in collaborazione con l’associazione Salute Allo Specchio dell’ Ospedale San Raffaele, all’iniziativa solidale “Dee di Vita” che supporta un percorso di sostegno psico-sociale rivolto alle donne in cura per patologie oncologiche presso l’Ospedale San Raffaele di Milano. Con l’aiuto delle pazienti in cura, per rendere l’indosso semplice e funzionale, Mantero 1902 ha realizzato – in un morbido e luminoso twill di seta le cui stampe provengono da una selezione dei disegni dell’archivio – il turbante, simbolo di forza e coraggio a sostegno della loro bellezza. Chi mi conosce, sa che professo da sempre che le donne debbano imparare a fare squadra e a supportarsi a vicenda. Per questo credo che sia nostro dovere sposare la causa del “turbante sospeso” che permette di acquistare un turbante da consegnare alle pazienti con maggiori difficoltà economiche. Chi mi conosce sa che sono un’idealista ed una sognatrice e credo che ci saranno tante persone – soprattutto tra i nostri lettori - disponibili a

Solo poche righe a mia disposizione per parlarvi di un numero di cui sono davvero innamorata forse perchè mi permette di immergermi nel mio elemento preferito: l’acqua. Do il benvenuto a bordo a Milena Maddalena Affinito, erborista professionista, che cura una rubrica destinata al nostro bien-être naturale. Last but surely not least, questo numero per me rappresenta un momento topico perchè vede il debutto editoriale di mia figlia Ludovica e le sue recensioni di alberghi e viaggi visti dagli occhi di una Millennial. Per dirla con le parole con cui si chiude “Le Grand Bleu”, il mio film preferito (non a caso un film che parla di mare) “Go and see, my love!” Divertitevi, innamoratevi, fate scorte di ricordi e, soprattutto leggete OM! Eppure da quasi 15 anni si celebra la bellezza della scrittura epistolare con il Festival delle Lettere, una manifestazione tutta dedicata con tanto di concorso con premi in denaro. FESTIVAL DELLO SPORT Dopo il clamoroso successo della prima edizione nel 2018, con oltre 50 mila visitatori, tanti campioni, 115 eventi e 500 giornalisti, torna a Trento il Festival dello Sport, organizzato da “La Gazzetta dello Sport”, in collaborazione con la Provincia di Trento. Perché a Trento? Perché è una cittadina dalla storia millenaria, dall’immenso patrimonio artistico e con una passione incondizionata per lo sport, tanto da conquistare il titolo di “Provincia più sportiva d’Italia”. Il tema di quest’anno? “Il fenomeno, i fenomeni”: due sostantivi che fanno sognare perché vengono assegnati solitamente a personaggi straordinari del mondo dello sport, uomini e donne fuori dal comune. Non si tratta solo di campioni, dei veri e propri fuoriclasse che nel proprio DNA possiedono quel pizzico di genio e a volte di follia che li rende iconici, quasi irraggiungibili nella loro grandezza.

Dal 10 al 13 ottobre, Trento After the resounding success of the first edition in 2018, with over 50 thousand visitors, many champions, 115 events and 500 journalists, the Festival of Sport returns to Trento, organized by “La Gazzetta dello Sport”, in collaboration with the Province of Trento. Because it is a town with a thousand-year history, with an immense artistic heritage and an unconditional passion for sport, so much so that it won the title of “Most Sporty Province in Italy”. This year’s theme? “The phenomenon, the phenomena”: two nouns that make people dream because they are usually assigned to extraordinary figures from the world of sport, men and women out of the ordinary. These are not just champions, real special people who in their DNA possess that pinch of genius and sometimes madness that makes them iconic, almost unattainable in their greatness.

TINA MEDOTTI Tina Modotti fu una delle più grandi fotografe del secolo scorso. Ma non solo: il suo eclettismo la portò a essere anche attrice per un breve periodo.

La mostra “Tina Modotti fotografa e rivoluzionaria” si propone di indagarne le intriganti vicende biografiche, ripercorrendone la carriera, fatta di passioni: dalla fotografia agli amanti. 60 fotografie provenienti dalla Galerie Bilderwel di Berlino di Reinhard Schultz, che illustrano in sei tappe i luoghi, le immagini, gli affetti che animarono il mondo di Tina. Una sezione è dedicata alla sua breve carriera a Hollywood, durante l’epoca del cinema muto. Tra le pellicole che la vedono protagonista, “Pelle di tigre” del 1920 diretta da Roy Clements, unico documento cinematografico superstite della carriera di attrice di Tina Modotti. Fino all’1 settembre - Palazzo Bisaccioni, Jesi (AN) Tina Modotti was one of the greatest photographers of the last century.

But not only that: her eclecticism led her to be also an actress for a short time. The exhibition “Tina Modotti photographer and revolutionary” aims to investigate her intriguing biographical events, retracing her career, made up of passions: from photography to lovers. 60 photographs from Reinhard Schultz’s Galerie Bilderwel in Berlin, illustrating in six stages the places, images and affections that animated Tina’s world. One section is dedicated to her short career in Hollywood, during the era of silent movie. La Grazia Obliqua, ‘Verso Aden’

With its first album, released last April, intriguingly titled “Songs for sunsets and dawns - At the dusk of the West”, produced by X-Records label and already defined by some experts “one of the most beautiful and intense albums ever in the last few years in Italy”, La Grazia Obliqua, a band coming from Rome, tells us about its journey through the obscure vibrations of darkwave music.

How does La Grazia Obliqua succeed in merging the Mediterranean cultural tradition, rich in melodies and warm flavours, and the icy sounds of the Gothic culture?

Basically, we are moved by the curiosity to understand what happens when we bring together very distant elements and let them contaminate each other. Thus, through the use of melody, we pay tribute to our Mediterranean cultural component, while through electronics we hark back to the goth sound, which is colder and emotionally distant. The union and clash of these two different worlds constitutes the wide range of all our emotions that coexist within our songs.

Is it true that, of the four elements, La Grazia Obliqua feels more akin to water?

Very true. Suffice it to say that music propagates through waves and, like water, sound is also an extremely malleable element. Like moods in music, water can be calm and reassuring, a source of life, but also impetuous, passionate, bearer of death like a stormy sea. And just like these phenomena of nature linked to water, in which we find ourselves through emotions, passions, disappointments and thoughts, so our music is the carrier and vehicle of all these moods.

The sea is synonymous with exploratory journey. How does La Grazia Obliqua deal with this journey in music?

We face our exploration in music with a conqueror’s attitude. For us, the sea is music, water is the notes we play, and every port to which we land is a new musical experience, which is different each time, which enriches each time our wealth of sounds like in an adventure. This exploration attitude is found in all the songs that make up our album. In some cases, the journey can be inside oneself, as in ‘Genealogy’, in search of one’s deepest roots, or facing the infinite, as in ‘Friedrich’, in its highest sense of Romanticism, or it can be physical and geographical, as in ‘Verso Aden’. The common denominator of all these experiences is the need to know oneself and to face the world around us.

Which is the “crew” of this “sailing ship” called Oblique Grace? And what are your next travel destinations?

The members of the band are: Alessandro Bellotta (vocals and acoustic guitar), Gianluca Pinelli (electric guitar), Alessandra ‘Trinity’ Bersiani (keys, synths & programming, flute, voice, percussions), Massimo Bandiera (bass) and Valerio Michetti (drums). At the moment, our primary purpose is to promote the newly released album, presenting it live in front of an always wider audience, possibly even beyond the borders of the ‘Mare Nostrum’.

L’acqua è creatività. Allo stato liquido è flessibile, cambia forma adattandosi alle circostanze, penetra, scava, si appropria, si apre la sua strada ovunque aggirando gli ostacoli che incontra sul suo cammino, senza opporre resistenza ma adattandosi. L’acqua è incolore e assume i colori più svariati. L’acqua ha voce.

Quando scorre produce un suono musicale, quando scroscia è un rumore roboante. L’acqua è il tramite per la purificazione e il risanamento, una riserva di energia che porta vita e purezza al corpo e alla mente. L’acqua è un inno alla vita.

Water is colourless and assumes the most varied colors. Water has a voice. When it flows it produces a musical sound, when pelting it is a thunderous noise.

Water is the means for purification and sanitation, a reserve of energy that brings life and purity to the body and mind. Water is a hymn to life.

Oggi voglio parlarvi di una pianta che fa parte della tradizione di alcune zone d’Italia, della Grecia e dell’Albania: l’erba stregónia o stregonia siciliana. In Italia è conosciuto come the albanese o the greco; in Inghilterra è lo “shepherd’s tea”, o tè dei pastori. È una pianta endemica che cresce in Sicilia e non solo, sopra i 1.500 metri, e che risponde al nome di Sideritis syriaca. Il suo uso è piuttosto comune nei Balcani, e risale ai tempi degli antichi Greci che la applicavano sulle ferite dei guerrieri, e ne suggerivano il decotto come rinvigorente. È tuttora molto utilizzata in Grecia con il nome di “tsai vounìsio”, ossia tè di montagna: se ne fa un gran uso per la tosse , raffreddore e influenza. Anche in Albania continua ad essere consigliata per gli stessi motivi e per tutti i malanni stagionali, e se ne prepara una tisana chiamata “çaj mali”. Il decotto di Stregonia si usava anche al posto della cena con formaggio e pane, secondo la tradizione balcanica: il suo gusto assomiglia un po’ all’origano, ma più dolce. Le sommità vengono fatte bollire 5-10 minuti poi si può bere, più volte al dì. È ottimo per alleviare sinusiti, raffreddori, calmare la tosse ed è un ottimo integratore di ferro. Esisono solo alcuni studi scientifici che provano l’attività antinfiammatoria e antidolorifica degli estratti della Stregonia Siciliana e pochi altri che ne provano l’azione ansiolitica, antistress e antiossidante.Si tratta di una pianta di uso tradizionale molto interessante, ma ancora poco conosciuta e studiata. Today I want to talk about a plant that is part of the tradition of some parts of Italy, Greece and Albania: the Stregónia or Sicilian stregonia. In Italy it is known as the Albanian or Greek tea and in England it is called “Shepherd’s tea”. It is an endemic plant that grows in Sicily (and not only), above 1,500 meters of altitude, and which responds to the name of Sideritis Syriaca. Its use is quite common in the Balkans, and dates back to the times of the ancient Greeks who applied it on the wounds of the warriors, and suggested the decoction as invigorating. It is still widely used in Greece under the name of “Tsai Vounìsio”, namely Mountain tea: it makes a great use for coughing, colds and flu. Even in Albania it continues to be recommended for the same reasons and for all seasonal ailments, and it prepares a herbal tea called “Çaj Mali”. The decoction of stregonia was also used instead of dinner together with cheese and bread, according to the Balkan tradition: its taste resembles a little bit that of oregano, but sweeter. The tops are boiled 5-10 minutes then you can drink it, several times a day. It is great for relieving sinusitis, colds, calming cough and is an excellent iron supplement. There are only a few scientific studies that prove the anti-inflammatory and pain killer activity of its extracts and a few others that prove its iranxiolytic, anti-stress and anti oxidant action. It is a very interesting plant of traditional use, but still little known and studied. If you have any doubts do not hesitate to contact me.

This very fine and rare reference 2497 first series comes in extraordinary condition with exquisite proportions and incredibly well-defined fluting to the lugs. The reference 2497 is historically important and was produced from 1951 until it was discontinued in 1963. It was the world’s first perpetual calendar wristwatch with centre seconds and remained the only one in the history of Patek Philippe until the introduction of reference 5050 in 1993, which was an impressive 30 years after the production of the 2497 ceased. A rare and soughtafter reference, less than 200 pieces were made and only around 20 of them in pink gold according to research. Reference 2497 can be divided into a first and second series, depending on the case maker. First series cases were made by Emile Vichet and second series cases made by Wenger.

Released in 1941, the 1518 was the first perpetual calendar chronograph produced in series by any manufacture. Interestingly the very first examples were modified variants of the reference 130 before the decision was made to produce the watch in series with its specific reference number.

The reference 6239 is the “original” Rolex Daytona, the watch that would become the most sought-after and celebrated wristwatch ever produced. The model was introduced in 1963 in America and in 1964 in Europe and it was produced until 1969. It is today admitted that about 14,000 pieces of that reference were produced with only 300 in yellow gold. Rare is an adjective that can be used for any gold 6239. However, rarity is not enough to make a watch truly special or highly collectible. Condition is also a crucial element to elevate a piece to a trophy status. Il successo dirompente di internet sembrava aver messo in discussione il ruolo del punto vendita fisico, svuotadolo di contenuti e di opportunità, ma la cosa che Aurel Bacs e Livia Russo sanno fare meglio di chiunque altro, è capire – con largo anticipo – che direzione prenderà il mercato. Così, quando mi hanno raccontato il progetto di Phillips Perpetual, non sono rimasta sorpresa, solo compiaciuta di una scelta che condivido al 100%.

Ciò che ho imparato con il mio lavoro, è che per riuscire a soddisfare e fidelizzare pienamente il consumatore, bisogna offrire un’esperienza unica. E la unique selling proposition di Phillips Perpetual è proprio questa: una boutique experience per gli appassionati dell’orologeria vintage, un approccio personale, un luogo fisico aperto per 5 giorni a settimana, che non abbia come unica finalità quella dell’acquisto o la vendita di orologi, bensì uno spazio in cui poter coltivare la propria passione attraverso la fruizione di partnership innovative, esposizioni private e un’accurata programmazione degli eventi. Non è passato molto tempo da quando sei entrato in Phillip’s in collaboration with Bacs & Russo e saremmo lieti di saperne di più su di te, quindi... chi è James Marks?

Ho 38 anni, sono nato e cresciuto a Londra e ho intrapreso una carriera nel settore bancario fino al 2012, quando sono entrato a far parte di un Hedge Fund con sede a Dubai, focalizzata sulle materie prime e sugli asset alternativi. Sono un collezionista di orologi e affascinato da Rolex per oltre 20 anni da quando ho girato la pagina di un Sunday Broadsheet e mi sono trovato davanti l’immagine di Norman Foster con un Explorer 2. Il design è importante per me e il quadrante bianco croccante combina il mio amore per la funzionalità con un’estetica piacevole.

La mia passione, però, rimane il Daytona. Un’icona dell’orologeria e un orologio caratterizzato nel corso dei decenni da tali e tante sfumature che coinvolge i collezionisti. È per questo che, abitualmente, indosso un Ref.116509 con quadrante Sodalite e numeri arabi.

So when they told me about the Phillips Perpetual project, I wasn’t surprised, just pleased with a choice I share 100%. What I have learned with my work is that, in order to fully satisfy and retain customers, you have to offer a unique experience. It hasn’t been long since you joined Phillip’s in collaboration with Bacs & Russo and we would be delighted to know more about you so... who is James Marks?

I am 38, born and raised in London and pursued a career in Banking until 2012 when I joined a Dubai based Hedge Fund focusing on commodities and alternative assets. I have been a watch collector and fascinated by Rolex for over 20 years since I turned the page of a Sunday Broadsheet newspaper to discover an image of Norman Foster wearing an Explorer 2. Design is important to me and the crisp white dial resonated with my love of functionality combined with pleasing aesthetics. My passion however remains the Daytona. An Icon in horology and a watch festooned with nuances over the decades that engrosses collectors. As such I wear a reference 116509 fitted with Sodalite dial and Arabic numerals on a daily basis.

You said your background is in finance so what pushed you to join an auction house?

I have always admired the attention to detail and individuality that Aurel and Livia have injected into Phillips. From photography, cataloging and the selection of property, their focus on the finest quality has set them apart from the competition and cemented the department’s market leader status. Having traded commodities all of my life when I was consumed by Gold Rolex over Gold research I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in vintage watches and the entrepreneurial spirit of Phillips matched what I was hoping to achieve. I also believed that as an auction house we were in a unique position to educate collectors to the core business through the Perpetual concept in London and rejuvenate the notion of Private Treaty.

You are a collector. I promise I am not going to tell anyone but... if you had no budget restrain whatsoever and could choose one piece to add to your personal collection, which piece would you pick?

MY WAY: A SUBJECTIVE VIEW OF THE WORLD OF WATCH COLLECTING testi di: Alessandro Ciani

Devo ammettere che, per quanto io per primo abbia sognato un mondo globalmente interessato agli orologi d’epoca, sono ancora incredulo rispetto a quanto sta effettivamente avvenendo. Solo pochi anni fa i “grandi” collezionisti si contavano sulla punta delle dita e la maggior parte degli appassionati miravano principalmente ad avere un solo esemplare della loro marca o modello preferito: un Daytona, un Submariner – o GMT, o Explorer – un Day-date, un Patek Philippe, un Breguet (che non era un orologio d’epoca, ma la convinzione generale era che non potesse mancare in una vera collezione di orologi). Uno Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso ed un Rolex ovetto in acciaio – in oro per i più sofisticati – erano altri orologi che ogni vero collezionista d’epoca non poteva non avere. In genere l’idea era di conservare i propri orologi per sempre, anche se occasionalmente qualcosa poteva essere venduto per passare a qualcosa di più importante. Gli orologi di forma erano importanti, ed un qualsiasi Patek Philippe che montasse il movimento rettangolare (ok, ottagonale) calibro 9-90 era considerate l’equivalente di una Ferrari V12 anche nella configurazione cassa-quadrante meno attraente. Non avevamo la più pallida idea di quanti esemplari fossero stati costruiti di un particolare orologio ed il piccolo numero di appassionati, rispetto a quello degli orologi che apparivano sul mercato, ci dava la falsa percezione che qualunque orologio si potesse vendere per poi rimpiazzarlo con uno uguale in un momento successivo più favorevole alle proprie esigenze e allo stesso prezzo, cosa che, infatti, accadeva puntualmente. Dal numero di Patek Philippe 1518 che si vedevano apparire sistematicamente in ogni catalogo d’asta si sarebbe detto ne avessero fatti almeno duemila. In linea generale, quando si trattava di vintage da collezione, più un orologio era “antico” e più valeva. Imparavamo la storia delle diverse produzioni molto gradualmente e, anche se rispettare le caratteristiche originali di ogni dato modello era pur sempre una buona idea, molti utenti finali non esitavano ad “aggiustare” l’aspetto dell’orologio per meglio adattarlo al proprio gusto personale: lunette in bachelite finivano su Rolex 6265, quadranti Daytona “Big Red” su 6239, bracciali oyster a maglia piena sostituivano quelli originali rivettati, quadranti – ristampati – neri prendevano il posto di quelli originali argento o oro. Ammettiamolo: non avevamo la più lontana idea di cosa fossero davvero i nostri orologi, rispetto a quello che bisogna sapere oggi per poter essere un professionista o anche solo per collezionare. Eppure, non credo ci siano mai stati anni migliori per imparare a conoscere davvero gli orologi. Nonostante il fatto che l’aspetto educativo dell’esperienza rappresentata dal collezionare orologi fosse di gran lunga più povero rispetto ad oggi, un altro aveva un peso di gran lunga maggiore: compravamo gli orologi che ci piacevano, con il solo fine di indossarli. Sembrerà pure ovvio, ma con l’approccio forensico usato attualmente per valutare – non solo finanziariamente – gli orologi d’epoca, le persone sembrano aver perso la capacità, o l’interesse, di considerarne l’aspetto. Ai correnti prezzi di mercato il collezionista moderno ha sempre più bisogno di sentirsi protetto dal rischio di commettere un errore, e la sua necessità di poter utilizzare dei criteri certi ed indicutibili ha sostanzialmente cambiato il modo in cui guardiamo gli orologi: per molti – fortunatamente non tutti – sembra impossibile poter dire se un determinate orologio canta oppure no senza esporlo ai raggi UV di una lampada di Wood, esaminarlo al microscopio, testarlo con un contatore Geiger e verificare se, Dio non voglia, non sia mai apparso precedentemenete in asta con un altro quadrante successivamente sostituito, anche se con quello giusto. Ma il fatto è che chiunque sia in grado di poter leggere e scrivere, anche se non è in grado di distinguere la propria scarpa destra da quella sinistra, può eseguire questi semplici verifiche e proclamarsi esparto di orologeria d’epoca ed offrire i propri servizi di consulenza: nasce e prospera così un nuovo business che non riechiede alcun investimento se non quello sostenuto dai collezionisti e da (altri) professionisti del settore e il nuovo approccio di tipo filatelico di apprezzare gli orologi sta sostituendo quello primitivo precedente. Immagino che in un prossimo futuro saremo in grado di eleggere miss Universo solo valutando le sue misure, esaminando le lastre fatte dal suo dentista e le sue analisi del sangue.

Personalmente, continuerò a cercare di svelare la bellezza di ogni donna ed il suo mistero attraverso sfumature che non sono misurabili.

I have to admit that, as much as I dreamt of a future in which the whole world would be into vintage watches, I am still incredulous at seeing what is actually happening. It was just a few years ago that big collectors were only a handful and the majority of watch collectors aimed mainly at having one example of their favorite brand or model: one Daytona, one Submariner - or GMT, or Explorer - one gold watch - a Day-Date, a Datejust - a Patek Philippe, a Breguet (which wasn’t really a vintage watch, but everyone felt it was a must to have one in a real watch collection). A vintage steel – gold for the most sophisticated - Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso and a Rolex bubble back were other watches just about every real vintage collector needed to have. Watches were generally meant to be kept forever, although every now and then something would be sold to upgrade in favor of a more important piece. Rectangular watches were big, and any Patek Philippe bearing the rectangular (ok, octagonal) caliber 9-90 was regarded to as a V12 Ferrari even in the least exciting case and dial design configuration. We had no clue of how many examples of any particular watch existed out there, and the limited number of watch aficionados compared to large number of watches that were coming back to the market every day, gave us the false impression that anything could be sold and replaced without a problem at any future time and more or less for the same money, as that’s exactly what would normally happen. From the number of Patek Philippe 1518 you saw popping up on auction catalogs in those days, you had to believe they must have made at least a couple of thousand. In a general line of thinking, the more “antique” the watch the more valuable it would prove on the market when it came to real collectibles. In the mid-late ‘80s timepieces from the ‘60s and ‘70s were seen more as discontinued but still cool watches to wear, more often than not at a much lower price than their new versions. We were learning about productions’ history gradually, and although sticking to the original specs of a given watch was always a good idea, many end users would not refrain from having their watches “adjusted” to best suit their taste: black bezels would go on Rolex 6265s, big red dials on 6239s, solid link bracelets replaced original riveted ones, black - refinished - dials took the place of silvered original ones, and so on. Let’s face it: we didn’t know the first thing about watches compared to what you need to know today to be a collector or a professional. And yet, I don’t think there has ever been a better time to learn about them then those years. Whereas the educational aspect of the watch collecting experience was incredibly much poorer than today, another one had a more prominent weight: we would actually buy watches that we liked, with the plain purpose of wearing them. It may sound obvious, but with today’s “forensic” approach to assess the altogether – not only financial - value of vintage watches, people have lost the ability, or the interest, to consider their looks. At today’s prices the modern collector needs to feel protected from making a mistake, and his need for certain, unquestionable criteria has changed the way we look at watches: to most – but fortunately not all - there seem to be no way to tell if a watch has the “magic” or not without exposing it to a UV light, inspect it with a microscope, gauge it with a Geiger tester and check its life long auction history, God forbid someone had replaced a dial or a set of hands some twenty years ago, albeit with a better one. But the fact is that anyone with basic reading and writing skills – whether they can tell their right shoe from the left or not - can perform these tests and proclaim himself a professional vintage watch expert and consultant: hence, a new business – that requires no investment other than that of their clients and of the watch dealers - is flourishing, and a new, philatelic way to appreciate watches is replacing the old, primitive one. I expect that in a very next future they will be able to select Miss Universe – as well as any other beauty contest pageant -only by her body measurements, dental x-rays and blood works. Personally, I’ll still stick to the old school way to find every woman’s beauty and mystery in nuances that cannot be measured.

La 275 GTS fu presentata assieme alla 275 GTB nel corso del Salone di Parigi edizione 1964 e segnò il ritorno dopo quasi due anni di un modello aperto nel catalogo Ferrari: la produzione riguardante la 250 GT California, infatti, fu cessata all’inizio del 1963. Versione spider della 275GTB, ne condivideva le sospensioni posteriori indipendenti ed il cambio disposto posteriormente. Il motore V12 era anche qui a carter umido ma aveva una ventina di cavalli in meno: dato il tipo di vettura ed il target di clientela, si scelse di privilegiare l’elasticità rispetto alla potenza massima. Le ruote, in lega per la 275GTB, sulla GTS erano a raggi: donavano all’insieme maggior eleganza.

The 275 GTS spider was presented alongside the 275 GTB at the 1964 Paris Salon, marking the return of an open model to the Ferrari catalogue after nearly two years, since the cessation of 250 GT California production in early 1963. The Pininfarina-designed spider version of the 275 GTB shared the same independent rear suspension and rearmounted gearbox. The V12 once again was fitted with wet sump lubrication, but the engine developed around 20 bhp less; given the type of car and its target clientele, torque and flexibility were favoured over maximum power. While the 275 GTB wore alloy rims, the GTS was fitted with wire wheels, creating a more elegant look.

L’idea di disegnare l’orologio piu “seventy’s style” mai prodotto, venne al genio creativo di Charles Gerald Genta nel 1972, e , dopo grandi sforzi da parte dei tecnici di Audemars Piguet, dovuti alla estrema difficoltà realizzativ del progetto, il Royal Oak Ref 5402 ST vide la luce. La prima serie, denominata “A” , venne prodotta in un batch limitato di 1.000 pezzi, seguita da una seconda serie sempre di 1.000 esemplari, seguirono poi due edizioni, ciascuna di mille pezzi prodotti, la B e la C. Il calibro usato dalla manifattura era il famoso Jeager le Coultre Ref 920, (lo stesso che sarà usato per il Patek Philippe Nautilus e per il Vacheron Constantin 222)., mentre i tecnici di Audemars Piguet realizzarono una cassa in acciaio molto sottile, solo 7 mm di spessore, ma di 40 mm di larghezza.

Lo stile degli anni 70 era segnato. Il successo commerciale arrivò subito, nonostante il prezzo al pubblico fosse molto elevato e pari a CHF 3.650. (Più di tre volte il prezzo di un Rolex sportivo dell’epoca). Seguiranno poi le altre versioni, con cassa in oro o in acciaio ed oro. Oggi il Royal Oak degli anni 70 è diventato uno degli orologi vintage piu richiesti dai collezionisti e le rarità, come le personalizzazioni sui quadranti, o le limited editions realizzate negli anni 90, sono ormai ospiti d’onore nelle vetrine dei vintage dealers piu importanti al mondo. The idea of drawing the most “Seventy’s style” watch ever produced, came to the creative genius of Charles Gerald Genta in 1972 and, after a great deal of efforts by the technicians of Audemars Piguet, due to the extreme difficulty of the project, the Royal Oak Ref. 5402 ST became a reality. The first series, called “A”, was produced in a limited batch of 1,000 pieces, followed by a second series of 1,000 specimens, then followed by two editions, of a thousand pieces each, the “B” and the “C”. The caliber used by the manufactory was the famous Jeager LeCoultre Ref. 920, (the same that will be used

The commercial success was immediate, despite the price to the public was very high and equal to CHF 3,650 (more than three times the price of a sports Rolex of the time). Other versions followed featuring both a gold case or a steel and gold case. Today the Royal Oak of the 70’s has become one of the most requested vintage watches from collectors and rarities, such as customizations on dials, or limited editions made in the years 90, are now guests of honor in the windows of the most important vintage dealers around the world. The current production of the Maison focuses on the realization of very complicated Royal Oak in an infinite range of versions. Janvier Quando ho saputo che questo numero di OM sarebbe stato dedicato all’acqua, ho subito colto l’opportunità per chiedere a OMEGA di provare il loro nuovo Seamaster Diver 300M lanciato qualche mese fa in occasione del venticinquesimo anniversario.

Perché questa scelta? Intanto perché mi piace! Poi perché OMEGA è da sempre impegnata nello sviluppo di segnatempo subacquei: sin dal 1932 con il lancio dell’OMEGA Marine, il primo orologio subacqueo destinato al grande pubblico. Nel 1993 poi ci fu il lancio del Seamaster Diver 300M, che segnava il ritorno di OMEGA nel mondo dei segnatempo subacquei, dando inoltre il via alla partnership con James Bond. L’anno scorso OMEGA introdusse un restyling del famoso segnatempo, con 15 modelli unici: 6 versioni in acciaio inossidabile, 8 in un mix di acciaio e oro 18K e un’edizione limitata in titanio, tantalio e oro Sedna. La versione che ho provato è una di quelle in acciaio. Rispetto al modello precedente la cassa è stata maggiorata, portandola a 42mm: questo era l’unico aspetto che mi spaventava un poco, visto il mio polso piccolo… Bene, appena indossato mi sono dovuto ricredere!

L’orologio infatti è portabilissimo; e aggiungo una cosa: io (come vedete dalle foto) ho potuto provarlo braccialato (in questa nuova versione con il bracciale ancora più integrato con la cassa); ma le versioni con cinturino in caucciù che comuqnue ho visto, non sono da meno: anzi, d’estate sono quasi quasi più comode e leggere! L’altra significativa novità è che ora il Diver 300M è equipaggiato con il calibro Master Chronometer 8800, oggi il più alto standard dell’industria orologiera svizzera per precisione, affidabilità e resistenza ai campi magnetici (fino a 15.000 gauss). Forse non tutti sanno che, per potersi fregiare di questa qualifica, un orologio e il suo movimento devono passare 8 test molto rigorosi approvati dallo Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS). Spesso gli orologi soggetti a restyling hanno ben poche differenze estetiche rispetto ai loro predecessori. Non è il caso secondo me di questo segnatempo: ogni dettaglio del design è stato ripensato, inclusa la ghiera d’immersione, ora realizzata in ceramica con scala d’immersione in Ceragold™ o in smalto bianco. I quadranti sono realizzati in ceramica lucida e sono disponibili in nero, blu (quello che ho provato e, secondo me, il più bello) o in PDV spazzolato e cromato. OMEGA ha inoltre re-introdotto il pattern a onda (ora inciso a laser) una delle caratteristiche che già apprezzavo del design originale. Ma non finisce qui! Tutti gli indici sono stati rialzati e riempiti di Super-LumiNova (per un orologio subacqueo è fondamentale la visibilità sott’acqua) e la finestrella del datario è stata spostata a ore 6. Anche le lancette scheletrate (rodiate, in oro 18K o blu) sono state leggermente rimodellate. La valvola di scappamento dell’elio è sempre stato uno dei dettagli più importanti del Diver300M: i sub sanno che le molecole di elio che si espandono durante la decompressione possono far scoppiare il vetro o il fondello. È fondamentale quindi liberarsi di queste molecole. L’orologio che ho provato ha la valvola a forma conica e brevettata: il nuovo aggiornamento garantisce che se la valvola dovesse essere accidentalmente lasciata aperta sott’acqua, l’orologio rimarrà impermeabile fino a 5 bar. Ho apprezzato (e molto!) il bracciale caratterizzato dalla chiusura regolabile ed estensibile, utile sia quando si indossa l’orologio sopra la muta sia semplicemente quando si risente degli sbalzi climatici: a chi non è capitato di sentirsi un orologio a volte stretto e a volte largo, anche senza immergersi nelle acque più profonde? L’orologio ha carattere da vendere, caratteristica che ho notato subito; e non solo io: in tanti me l’hanno notato al polso e, quasi tutti, l’hanno apprezzato. E’ un orologio che si può tranquillamente portare sia in ufficio sia nel tempo libero, sia in abbigliamento formale (soprattutto la versione braccialata) sia con jeans e maglietta. Il prezzo, poi, credo sia un’altra “freccia al suo arco”: € 5000 il prezzo suggerito al pubblico (€ 4700 con cinturino in caucciù) è sicuramente un prezzo più che competitivo. E questa nuova nuance blu non credo proprio stanchi; chi non ne fosse convinto, comunque, può sempre optare per il quadrante nero. Ma, come ho scritto, non è il mio caso!

Why this choice? First of all because I like it!, then because OMEGA has always been involved in the development of underwater timepieces since 1932 with the launch of the OMEGA Marine, the first diver’s watch for the general public. In 1993 there was the launch of the Seamaster Diver 300M, which marked OMEGA’s return to the world of underwater timepieces, also kicking off the partnership with James Bond. Last year, OMEGA introduced a makeover of the famous timepiece, with 15 unique models: 6 stainless steel versions, 8 in a mix of 18K steel and gold and a limited edition titanium, tantalum and Sedna gold. I tried the steel one. Compared to the previous model the case was increased, bringing it to 42mm: this was the only aspect that scared me a little, given my small wrist, but once worn I had to re-think it! The watch is in fact very wearable; and I’ll add one thing: as you can see from the pics I tried the bracelet version (which is now even more integrated with the case) but the rubber strap one is - in view of the summer - lighter and even more comfortable! The other significant novelty is that the Diver 300M is now equipped with the Master Chronometer 8800 caliber, today the highest standard in the Swiss watch industry for accuracy, reliability and resistance to magnetic fields (up to 15,000 gauss). Perhaps not everyone knows that in order to obtain this qualification, a watch and its movement must pass 8 very rigorous tests approved by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS). Watches subject to makeovers often have very few aesthetic differences compared to their predecessors. In my opinion, this is not the case: every detail of the design has been rethought, including the dive bezel, now made of ceramic with immersion ladder in Ceragold™ or in white enamel. The dials are made of glossy ceramic and come in black, blue (the one I tried and, in my opinion, the most beautiful) or in PDV brushed and chrome. OMEGA has also re-introduced the wave pattern (now laser-engraved) one of the features I already appreciated about the original design. But this is not all! All indexes have been raised and filled with Super-LumiNova (key to underwater visibility) and the date window has been moved at 6 o’ clock. The scheleton hands (rodium, 18K gold or blue) have also been slightly remodeled. The helium runaway valve has always been one of the most important details of the Diver300M: divers know that helium molecules that expand during decompression can burst the glass or the back. It is therefore essential to get rid of these molecules. The watch I tried has the conical and patented valve: the new update ensures that if the valve were to be accidentally left open underwater, the watch will remain waterproof up to 5 bars. I really enjoyed the bracelet with adjustable and extensible clasp, useful both when wearing the watch over the wetsuit and simply when you are suffering from climate changes: who hasn’t felt like a watch that is sometimes tight and sometimes wide, even without diving into the deepest waters? The watch has great personality, a feature I noticed at once; and not just me: many people noticed it on my wrist and, almost everyone, appreciated it. It is a watch that you can safely wear in the office and in your free time, both in formal attire (especially the bracelet version) as well as casual. Another “arrow to its bow” is the price suggested to the public €5,000 (€4,700 with rubber strap) is definitely more than competitive. And tI don’t think you can get tired of this new blue shade even if those who are not convinced, however, can always opt for the black dial. But, as I wrote, it’s not my case!

L’HAMILTON VENTURA, IL MODELLO LANCIATO AL SUCCESSO DA ELVIS NEL 1961, RIVIVE AL POLSO DI WILL SMITH E TOMMY LEE JONES NELLE TRE EDIZIONI DELLA SAGA MEN IN BLACK Se devi vestire due agenti governativi incaricati di intimidire i testimoni di possibili avvistamenti UFO, dopo giacca, cravatta, occhiali e auto rigorosamente “black” devi concentrarti sui loro polsi. Ciò che devono indossare i “Men in black” Will Smith e Tommy Lee Jones altro non può essere che un orologio Hamilton Ventura. Design inconfondibile a scudo asimmetrico ispirato alla coda delle Chevrolet anni 50 che lo ha reso un’icona made in USA, il modello che si vede nel blockbuster è, ovviamente, “total black”.

Il successo della pellicola, che ha portato due sequel, ha sancito il connubio tra la saga cinematografica e la casa di orologi Hamilton che avviò una campagna promozionale per il rilancio del modello.

Al polso dei due protagonisti, l’Hamilton Ventura è diventato così l’orologio simbolo dei tre film di fantascienza Men in Black. Per il terzo capitolo, Hamilton ha presentato nel 2012 due versioni del suo iconico Ventura: XXL e medium. Mentre il primo ha cassa da 46 mm, cinturino in caucciù nero e quadrante nero a nido d’ape effetto carbon-look che gli conferiscono un design molto sportivo e moderno, il modello medium – che si vede al polso dei due agenti nel flashback al 1969 - ha cassa da 32 mm, quadrante nero e cinturino in lucertola nera e appare subito molto più elegante nelle sue forme classiche, fedeli alla prima edizione. Nella pellicola, Will Smith indossa un orologio Hamilton Ventura nella sua variante Chrono.

Presentato nel 1957, il Ventura originale è passato alla storia dell’orologeria come il primo orologio elettrico a batteria al mondo.

HAMILTON VENTURA, LAUNCHED TO SUCCESS BY ELVIS IN 1961, REVIVED ON THE WRIST OF WILL SMITH AND TOMMY LEE JONES IN THE THREE EDITIONS OF THE SAGA MEN IN BLACK. If you have to dress two government agents in charge of intimidating witnesses of possible UFO sightings, after strictly “black” jacket, tie, glasses and cars, you have to concentrate on their wrists. What the “Men in Black” Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones have to wear can be nothing but a Hamilton Ventura watch. Unmistakable asymmetrical shield design inspired by the tail of the Chevrolet from the ‘50s that made it an icon made in the USA, the model that you see in the blockbuster is, of course, a “total black” one. The success of the movie, which brought two sequels, sanctioned the union between the film saga and the Hamilton watch house that launched a promotional campaign for the revival of the model. On the wrist of the two protagonists, Hamilton Ventura has become the symbol of the three science fiction films Men in Black. For the third chapter, Hamilton presented in 2012 two versions of its iconic Ventura: XXL and Medium. While the first one features a 46 mm case, black rubber strap and black honeycomb carbon-look effect that give it a very sporty and modern design, the medium model – which is seen on the wrist of the two agents in the flashback to the 1969 – features a 32 mm case, black dial and black lizard strap and appears immediately much more elegant in its classic forms, faithful to the first edition. In the movie, Will Smith wears a Hamilton Ventura watch in its chrono variant.

Presented in 1957, the original Ventura has gone into watchmaking history as the world’s first battery-operated electric watch.

Chi mi conosce sa quanto ami il Made in Italy e quanto, per me, sia importante la sua tutela ad ogni latitudine. Non sorprenderà, quindi, che vi racconti la storia di Mantero, un’azienda familiare fondata nel 1902 da Riccardo Mantero la quale, da oltre un secolo, produce interamente in Italia, nella sua sede di Como, tessuti ed accessori tessili di lusso femminili e maschili e che, oggi, conta al suo attivo 426 dipendenti. Con più di 10.000 volumi, 60.000 foulards delle più prestigiose maison, migliaia di disegni realizzati a mano archiviati per tematica, carte prova, stampe su tessuto, tessuti uniti e jacquard, l’Archivio Mantero è oggi considerato uno degli archivi tessili più ricchi e straordinari al mondo. Chi mi conosce sa quanto sia stata sopraffatta dall’emozione nello scorprire che un’azienda così straordinaria abbia dato vita, in collaborazione con l’associazione Salute Allo Specchio dell’ Ospedale San Raffaele, all’iniziativa solidale “Dee di Vita” che supporta un percorso di sostegno psico-sociale rivolto alle donne in cura per patologie oncologiche presso l’Ospedale San Raffaele di Milano. Con l’aiuto delle pazienti in cura, per rendere l’indosso semplice e funzionale, Mantero 1902 ha realizzato – in un morbido e luminoso twill di seta le cui stampe provengono da una selezione dei disegni dell’archivio – il turbante, simbolo di forza e coraggio a sostegno della loro bellezza. Chi mi conosce, sa che professo da sempre che le donne debbano imparare a fare squadra e a supportarsi a vicenda. Per questo credo che sia nostro dovere sposare la causa del “turbante sospeso” che permette di acquistare un turbante da consegnare alle pazienti con maggiori difficoltà economiche. Those who know me know how much I love Made in Italy and how important it is for me to protect it at every latitude. It will not surprise, therefore, that I tell the story of Mantero, a family company founded in 1902 by Riccardo Mantero, which, for over a century, has produced entirely in Italy, in its factory in Como, men’s and women’s textiles and accessories for luxury textiles and which today hires 426 employees. With more than 10,000 volumes, 60,000 foulards of the most prestigious Maison, thousands of hand-made drawings archived for thematic, test papers, prints on fabric, woven fabrics and jacquard, the Mantero archive is now considered one of the richest and most extraordinary textile archives in the world. Those who know me know how overwhelmed I was by the thrill of discovering that such an extraordinary company has given life, in collaboration with Salute Allo Specchio of the San Raffaele Hospital, the solidarity initiative “Dee di Vita” that supports a psycho-social path for women in care for oncological pathologies at the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan. With the help of the patients in care, to make the wear simple and functional, Mantero 1902 has realized – in a soft and luminous silk twill whose prints come from a selection of the drawings of the archive – the turban, a symbol of strength and courage in support of their beauty.

Those who know me know that they always state that women should learn to team up and support each other. For those born in the 2000s, traveling means chasing Instagram trails and dreaming of walking the streets of New York, eating sushi in Osaka and partying in the Emerald Coast, especially if your mother has used you to go shopping in the Christmas markets in Copenhagen, to take the first bath of the season in Ibiza and to celebrate the sunset among the rooftops of Santorini. It should come as no surprise, then, that to celebrate my entry into the teen-age I asked her to take me to New York, which she would have done if she could leave work for more than 4 days in a row. Imagine, then, my disappointment, when at my proposal to visit the Big Apple, she relaunched with the Amalfi Coast. Who the heck may want to go to visit Ravello instead of New York? And so, without much conviction on my side, we left early in the morning for Positano. And along the way that led me to discover the land of lemons, the miracle was accomplished. Have you ever seen the blue of the sea embracing Positano?

Have you ever breathed its scent? Did you stick your feet in the sand and discover the warmth of that earth? Have you ever tasted its flavors? If you haven't done so, neither your breakfasts in Hong Kong nor swimming with whale sharks at the Isla del Coco, will never console you. My trip to the province of Salerno, one of the most extensive in Italy, was really a journey of discovery. I found that the whole world, that world that on Instagram just seems to want to eat fusion food and visit exotic places, gets in line to take a picture among the temples of Paestum, to admire the frescoes in the Villa of Mysteries in Pompeii, to discover the secrets of Criscemunno's pizza in Salerno, to be surprised by the sweetness of lemons in Amalfi, to appreciate the beautiful pottery in Vietri, and to surrender in front of the magic of villa Rufolo in Ravello. As far as I am concerned, I found my corner of paradise in Villa Rizzo. The small hotel is made from an old farmhouse within a 12-hectare estate cultivated with olives, hazelnuts, grapes and pomegranates. Dr. Rizzo, owner of the estate, has two beautiful dogs Romeo and Juliet, who accompany him on his daily walks, peacocks and many small ponies, including Eric, born just over a month ago. Our suite is "Le More" and the bathroom with the yellow floor, furnished with the wonderful ceramics of Vietri, makes me really happy.

At Villa Rizzo I love breakfast: every morning you find freshly baked cakes that really have the taste of homemade ones. I also discovered the goodness of the hazelnuts and, in general, of the local food. My favorite place, though, is for sure the SPA. When Dr. Rizzo and his staff learned that we were there for my birthday celebrations, they reserved the SPA area exclusively for us to make me live a truly unique experience: a universe of pampering from the steam room to the sauna, from the chromosome showers to the Scottish showers and the maxi jacuzzi before moving into the relaxation area where they made me enjoy a delicious herbal tea and two different kinds of chocolate. This trip has taught me so much. Above all, it made me realize that I live in a wonderful country that contains extraordinary stories even in small and unsuspecting villages and that, on none of the previous trips, I had ever heard so many different languages spoken around me. Mom told me that, in the past, this journey to discover culture and wisdom was called Grand Tour. So, let my Grand Tour begin... p.s. Thank you Alessandro for forcing me to try buffalo mozzarella. Il vino è un filo nella storia umana il cui punto iniziale si ritrova nei frammenti di argilla e nei residui di vasi che lo contenevano, rintracciati nelle grotte del Caucaso e risalenti ad oltre 6000 anni fa. I Greci e, soprattutto, i Romani diffusero la vite ed il suo meraviglioso succo in quello che era il mondo civilizzato. La “vitis vinifera” è stata trasportata e piantata ovunque un soldato romano abbia messo piede, diffondendosi in tutto il mondo conosciuto anche grazie alla chiesa, viaggiando verso il nuovo mondo tanto con i sacerdoti spagnoli quanto con i nobili avventurieri. Come le famiglie divise dai mari, le varietà viaggiarono in luoghi lontani e si radicarono dove prosperavano. Lo Zinfandel è una di tali varietà. Non fu fino alla fine degli anni ‘60 che il suo DNA fu ricondotto alla Croazia e al XV secolo e il suo cugino a lungo perduto, il Primitivo, atterrò in Puglia. Arrivato nel nuovo mondo, lo Zinfandel si fece strada verso la California nei primi anni del 1800, portato da un vivaista che cercava fortuna durante la corsa all’oro, ma rischiò di scomparire durante il proibizionismo negli anni ‘20, quando fu retrocesso a vino di bassa qualità fortificato. Un rinnovato interesse per lo Zinfandel si è sviluppato negli anni settanta che lo fecero conoscere come vino Californiano. Oggi quella dello Zinfandel è presentata come uva della California e viene piantata su e giù per la costa e le montagne che ne mostrano una moltitudine di personalità a seconda dal terroir. Così, mentre la Contea di Amador ce ne fornisce una versione audace, le montagne di Santa Cruz ci raccontano la sua complessità. Gli Zinfandel della Sonoma Coast, tra cui la Dry Creek Valley, offrono vini succosi con frutti rossi brillanti. Più a sud di Paso Robles, invece, gli Zinfandel sono più morbidi e rotondi. E c’è di più: il suo identico gemello, il Primitivo, è ugualmente seducente e a casa in Puglia. Lo Zinfandel è perfetto da gustare in estate con i cibi grigliati e vale la pena prendersi del tempo per conoscere meglio questa varietà.

Tanti vini, ma non abbastanza giorni d’estate. Zinfandel e Primitivo, dove il nuovo ed il vecchio mondo si siedono a tavola per mescolare i ricordi e versare il loro cuore.

Wine is a thread in human history. The beginning stitch, clay shards, remnant of pots which held wine, traced to caves in the Caucuses dating over 6000 years old. The Peloponesians, Greeks and, most notably, the Romans spread the vine and its wonderful juice to what was the civilized world. Vitis vinifera was transported and planted everywhere a Roman soldier roamed. It spread throughout the known world and was exalted in stature by the church. Eventually traveling to the new world in the pouches of Spanish priests and noble adventurers. Like families parted by the seas, varietals traveled to far off places and took root where they thrived. Zinfandel is such a varietal. It wasn’t until the late 60s that its DNA was traced back to Croatia and the 15th century. And its long lost cousin Primitivo landed in Puglia, Italy.

It arrived in the the new world and made its way to California in the early 1800s brought in by a nurseryman looking to make it rich during the Gold Rush. It nearly perished during the American Prohibition of the 20th century when it was relegated to low quality and fortified wines. A renewed interest in the 70s heralded Zinfandel as California’s own. Today Zinfandel is heralded as California’s grape and is planted up and down the coast and mountains displaying a multitude of personalities driven by terroir. Amador County gives us a bold and jammy version, while the Santa Cruz mountains offer a complexity. The Zinfandels from the Sonoma Coast including Dry Creek Valley offer juicy wines with bright red fruits. Further south in Paso Robles the Zinfandels are softer and rounder. And there’s more. It’s identical twin, Primitivo, is equally beguiling and at home in Puglia, Italy. Zinfandel is perfect for a summer of grilled foods and the variety is worth spending time to investigate. So many wines, not enough days of summer. Taste the influence of terroir side by side for much less than pricier varietals. Zinfandel and Primitivo, where new world and old world sit down at the table to reminisce and pour their hearts out.

Equinamity testi di: Francesca Romano

Come ti sei avvicinata al social design e come questa disciplina ha cambiato la tua attività artistica?

Mi sono avvicinata al social design dopo aver letto il libro “Design for the Real World” di Victor Papanek. Un libro che negli anni 60 era molto innovativo, metteva in luce l’emergere di un design socialmente responsabile! Mi sono subito ritrovata nell’idea di lavorare con responsabilità e con coscienza. Il design può portare un vero cambiamento nel mondo, se progettato con etica.

Perché e quando hai sentito l’esigenza così forte di realizzare opere cheaiutassero le persone a stare bene?

Aiutare le persone attorno a me a stare bene è stata un’esigenza che ho sentito fin da piccola, è sempre stato nel mio carattere e sicuramente sono stata fortemente influenzata da mia madre che ci “allenava” al bene! Aveva inventato le “bonnes actions” e noi figli venivamo invitati a raccontare quello che di buono avevamo seminato durante la giornata a scuola. Una palestra dell’anima.

In che modo Equanimity è la sintesi del suo percorso umano e professionale?

Equanimity rappresenta le mie figlie, mio marito, la mia famiglia d’origine. E anche tutti i miei collaboratori e tutte le persone che ho incontrato e che hanno contribuito a scrivere la mia storia. In Equanimity c’è il mio cuore: è un progetto che vuole far star bene le persone e allontanare stress e pensieri. Ho rappresentato l’armonia e l’equilibrio con una forma semplice che richiama il grembo protettivo.

Qual è la genesi di Equanimity, quindi da dove nasce, e che cos’è oggi?

Da tempo realizzavo sculture interattive, ero attratta dall’idea che le persone potessero trarre benefici nel momento in cui le abbracciavano. Così ho creato un gruppo di opere multi-sensoriali, all’interno delle quali inserivo un sensore di riconoscimento di movimento, olii essenziali naturali, musica e voci che coniugavano il verbo Amare. Poco dopo mi sono accorta che tante persone, sia adulti che bambini, si accovacciano volentieri in una di quelle sculture che aveva la forma di grembo, si chiamava “L’amico di oggi di ieri e di domani”, finchè un giorno un amico si era persino addormentato succhiando il pollice. Da quel momento decisi di trasformare la mia opera in una poltrona multisensoriale potenziandone la tecnologia per regalare ancora più benefici.

Possiamo dire che il design, l’arte e la tecnologia ‘devono’ essere al servizio delbenessere?

Certamente! Il design, ogni forma d’arte, la tecnologia come ogni nostro gesto dovrebbe avere un fine preciso: essere al servizio dell’umanità e portare alle persone gioia e benessere.

I programmi multisensoriali che caratterizzano Equanimity s’ispirano alla Natura: qual è il tuo legame con gli elementi naturali?

Ho passato grande parte della mia infanzia e della mia adolescenza a contatto con la Natura, prima nella Schwarzwald in Germania e poi nel Perigord in Francia. Stavo ore sola nei boschi… e cosi ho imparato ad entrare in contatto con gli elementi naturali. La terra è nostra madre. Una madre vuole il meglio per i suoi figli, per questo è importante ascoltare ciò che la natura insegna. Ad esempio amo gli alberi e spesso li abbraccio: loro non ci giudicano, comunicano con le loro radici e sono molto solidali gli uni con gli altri. E anche noi dobbiamo comunicare con i nostri valori profondi ed essere solidali.

Equanimity debutta il prossimo autunno… e poi? Quali sono i tuoi prossimi obiettivi?

Ho 5 progetti nel cassetto e non vedo l’ora di poterli sviluppare!

How did you approach social design and how did this discipline change your artistic activity?

I approached social design after reading the book “Design for the Real World” by Victor Papanek. A book that in the ‘60s was very innovative, brought to light the emergence of a socially responsible design! I immediately found myself in the idea of working responsibly and conscientiously. Design can bring a real change in the world if designed with ethics.

Why and when did you feel the need so strongly to create works that helped people to feel good?

Helping people around me to feel good was a requirement that I have felt since I was a child, it has always been in my character and certainly I was strongly influenced by my mother who “trained” us to good! She had invented the “bonnes actions” and we were invited to tell what good we had soiled during the day at school. A gym for the soul.

How is Equanimity the synthesis of its human and professional path?

Equanimity represents my daughters, my husband, my family of origin. And also all my co-workers and all the people I met who helped me to write my story. In Equanimity there is my heart: it is a project that wants to make people feel good and dismiss stress. I represented harmony and balance with a simple shape that recalls the protective womb.

What is the genesis of Equanimity, from where is it born and what is it today?

I had been making interactive sculptures for some times, I was attracted by the idea that people could benefit when they embraced them. So I created a group of multi-sensory works, within which I inserted a sensor of motion recognition, natural essential oils, music and voices that conjued the verb “Amare”. Soon after I realized that many people, both adults and children, would willingly squat in one of those sculptures that had the form of a womb, which was called “Today’s, yesterday’s and tomorrow’s friend”, until one day a friend had even fallen asleep sucking his thumb. From that moment on I decided to transform my work into a multi-sensory armchair, enhancing its technology to give even more benefits.

Can we say that design, art and technology ‘ must ‘ be at the service of wellness?

Certainly! Design, every art form, technology like any of our gestures should have a definite purpose: to be at the service of mankind and to bring joy and wellbeing to people.

The multisensory programs that characterize Equanimity are inspired by nature: What is your connection with natural elements?

I spent a great deal of my childhood and teen-age in touch with nature, first in the Schwarzwald in Germany and then in the Perigord in France. I spent hours in the woods...

And so I learned to get in touch with natural elements. The Earth is our mother. A mother wants the best for her kids, so it is important to listen to what nature teaches. For example I love trees and often embrace them: they do not judge us, they communicate with their roots and they are very sympathetic to each other. And we too must communicate with our deep values and be sympathetic.

Equanimity debuts next fall... And then? What are your next goals?

I have 5 projects in the drawer and I can’t wait to develop them!
