Director’s Letter
Counting Blessings We expect another major project to announce production in Oregon any day. Another We expect another major project to announce production in Oregon any day. Another one or two more should follow before the year is over. Even if you don’t work on these projects, that many more Oregonians will be employed – with additional industry job vacancies for others of us to fill – thanks to our work together to promote production in Oregon. Nice work. Limited state budgets and increased need in the public sector tells us that the 2014 short session of the Oregon Legislature is not the time to lobby for additional Oregon Production Investment Fund (OPIF) beyond the 67% increase we earned last year, but rather to reinforce other state programs including schools, law enforcement and social programs like the Earned Income Tax Credit. That said, we will turn away business once OPIF is maxed-out this year. Our Oregon Film office receives of dozens inquiries from multi-million dollar productions each year that inquire about shooting in Oregon but move on to other locales when they find out that we have “run out” of OPIF incentives. As Dean Devlin (producer of Independence Day, Leverage, The Librarian) puts it, “An unlimited amount of incentive means an unlimited amount of business in Oregon.” We are keen to acknowledge the many elected leaders who have put their reputations on the line to support the growth of jobs in our emerging Oregon industry, including Governors Kitzhaber and Kulongoski, both of whom introduced and supported bills to grow the industry in Oregon. As an industry we continue to support private investment in infrastructure and project financing so that we can see as many Oregonians owning, profiting and prospering off of media content as we see people making it. Commercial media, film, television, interactive web and video game production are now part of Oregon’s DNA, and together we have made Oregon a world-class creative industries supercenter, exporting advertising and other traded-sector products around the globe. Thank you for your continued support of the family-wage jobs of Oregon’s commercial, film, television and interactive media production industry. We’re proud to be “Made in Oregon.”

OMPA Annual Meeting celebrates Awards of Excellence winners OMPA celebrated Oregon’s industry with the Awards of Excellence at the OMPA annual meeting on Tuesday, January 28. Lana Veenker, C.S.A. (Cast Iron Studios) received the OMPA Award of Excellence, Sibyl Lazzara received the Rising Star award, and the Service and Inspiration award was given to Oregon House Speaker Tina Kotek. All three recipients were recognized for their personal dedication to the development and growth of our industry. Award recipients were nominated by OMPA members, and winners were selected by a committee comprised of previous award winners. Additionally, two $2,000 scholarships were awarded to students Megan Clark and Nick Shaw, both attending George Fox University. Finalists Alexandria Began (George Fox), Rafael DeLima (PCC) and Jonathan Klimoski (PCC) were also recognized. Lana Veenker had this to say about receiving the Award of Excellence:
“Having spent good portion of my adult life vagabonding around overseas, I often still feel like I’m in my own little bubble. Even though I’ve been back in the States for almost 15 years, I still get very focused and lone-wolfy, and am always surprised that anyone notices what I’m up to. But it’s very rewarding to lift your nose from the grindstone and realize that not only do you have a community, but that they embrace you. I wouldn’t have come this far, however, without the support and contributions of two people who have shared nearly half of this journey with me: Eryn Goodman, who has stood with me for nearly eight and a half years, and Ranielle Gray, who celebrates her seventh anniversary next week. They were a big reason for our rebrand from Lana Veenker Casting to Cast Iron Studios, and they deserve huge kudos for their expertise, hard work and dedication to our industry.” Heartfelt and well deserved congratulations to Lana, Sibyl and Speaker Kotek.

POWFest Announces 2014 Festival Highlights As submitted by Christine Autrand Mitchell, Programming Manager POWFest’s 2014 line-up, screening March 6 – 9 at the Hollywood Theatre in Portland, is diverse and compelling – from features and shorts, narrative and documentary, innovative and from the next generation of young filmmakers, these films will appeal with humor, integrity, surprises, and touch your heart. It’s been such a joy watching them over the last few months. Here are some highlights: The Portland Premiere of REDEMPTION TRAIL, by director/writer Britta Sjogren, will open our festival on Thursday, March 6th at the Hollywood Theatre. The film stars LisaGay Hamilton and Lily Rabe as two driven, imperfect women in this contemporary Western. From opposite sides of the tracks, they have nothing in common except a fatal pessimism about life, the legacy of deep personal loss. But fate carves a bridge between the two outsiders — and, united in a grief that sets them apart from the world, they form an unlikely, mythic alliance, seeking justice outside the law. Among an incredible group of documentary features, SPRING & ARNAUD is an amazingly stunning film about two Canadian artists and their love for art and each other. This film is a piece of art unto itself. Among the documentary shorts, we find a wide gamut of topics, like the eye-
opening interpretations of our western discarded clothing shipped halfway around the world in the film UNRAVELED. When you see LUCKY STORY, in our family friendly Family Shorts program, you will feel very lucky indeed to see how one mother and son deal with their fortune. In our Youth program we’ll see what our POWGirls team created over the course of the weekend, and find insightful films by young women like AFFORDING MY FUTURE: THE HIGH COST OF HIGHER EDUCATION. New to POWFest is the shorts program Quirky, for those slightly off-beat stories one cannot resist watching. In DREAM COUCH SOLD SEPARATELY, we find out what happened to one of our favorite childhood dolls. “It’s Generational” Shorts look at all sorts of relationships, stark and often heartbreaking, but with an optimistic thread, as in AHORA, NO, a UK/Spain collaborative about the repercussions of the Franco regime on a close-knit family. We have a mature theme in the Relationships Shorts program, with films like ANOTHER HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, about a daring couple who try something new. The mature theme continues in Animation/ Experimental Shorts, with a good oldfashioned and graphic hand drawn cartoon, BAKERMAN AND THE BUNNYMEN. For a full programming schedule and more info, visit the POWFest website.

OMPA Holiday Party Wrap-up When asked to describe OMPA members, many words come to mind: driven, professional, creative and more… but at the Portland Chapter Holiday Party, the attendees demonstrated a different attribute: compassion. The invitation asked members to bring a donation to Dignity Village with them to the December 17th event. People gave… and gave… and gave! They gave seven 30-gallon bags full of blankets, hats, gloves, clothing and toiletries. Amazing! Haven’t heard of Dignity Village? Dignity Village provides homeless individuals basic housing needs and offers services
like computers for online job searching and a phone center, where employers can reach them 24/7 for work. The Village takes people off the streets and gives them a place to rebuild their lives. Dignity Village was built by homeless people who simply wanted change. They took what they had and combined their efforts to help each other, with support and without shame. They wanted their dignity and self-respect back. If you missed the party but still want to contribute, Dignity Village is located at 9401 NE Sunderland Ave, in Portland.

Local Filmmakers/Animators Take on Broadway with THE KISS Portland’s own Oscar-winning Will Vinton and friends are developing an original musical comedy stage play called THE KISS, with a goal of taking the show to Broadway. Their first public showing is the upcoming “Staged Event” held at the Lakewood Theatre Company on March 2425. For further information and tickets, visit www.TheKissMusical.com Vinton says: “Recently, I’ve been really excited and working hard on a new project - a stage musical this time, called THE KISS. Initial readings and workshops of the show have led to us feel like we are sitting on a potentially great new musical here, and we’ve decided to make a fairly independent dash (more like marathon?) toward Broadway with it. Things are coming together quickly now and we’re planning our first public viewing of the show, THE KISS ‘Staged Event,’ toward the end of March. You really need to hear this terrific music and get a whiff of the story to see why we’re so excited.”
A key way the producers hope to continue development of the musical and to involve fans in it is via a Kickstarter campaign. The campaign and associated explanatory video, “On The Road To Broadway,” can be seen online. There you will find lots of info about the show, the team, rewards for pledging and a light-hearted discussion about what the producers plan to do and where they hope to go.

OMPA Member Randolph Sellars Completes New Book Trailer To screen at The Hollywood Theater on Saturday, Feb 8, 4:30 PM Producers Irl Davis and Randolph Sellars are proud to announce the upcoming release of “Polly, The Mystery of Bonney Canyon,” the highest production value book trailer ever produced. Book trailers are still relatively new as a media form. “Our goal is to raise the quality bar much higher for book trailers” says Davis, who wrote and produced the project. Sellars, the director of “Polly,” adds “we wanted to create something truly cinematic, with the look and feel of an exciting movie trailer that will viscerally engage potential readers.” The “Polly” trailer is based on Davis’ new adventure novel of the same name. The book is a tale of betrayal, murder and revenge, loosely based on stories about Polly O’Neal, Davis’ great grandmother, who traveled the Oregon Trail in the 1860’s. Remarkably, the book trailer was photographed primarily on Davis’ sprawling 6000-acre ranch in Tygh Valley, part of the original O’Neal/Davis homestead. Although parts of the land have been ranched in the past, most of it remains pristine high desert – full of hills, canyons and creeks. Davis plans to promote his ranch as a versatile location for local and out of state film productions. “Directing a period western was an amazing opportunity I’ve longed for,” says Sellars, a
filmmaker with over 30 years of experience, including 23 feature films. “I finally got to check that genre off my bucket list. Davis and Sellars assembled a professional cast and crew from both Portland and Tygh Valley. It’s a two-hour drive, so the Portlanders all stayed on the ranch during the five-day shoot. “Our local cast and crew joined us for family style meals, and we all watched dailies in the evening,” says Portland actress Mercedes Rose. “It was an incredible bonding experience that I’ll never forget.” The public is invited to the premier screening of the “Polly” book trailer at The Hollywood Theater on Saturday, Feb 8 at 4:30 PM. Behind the scenes videos will also be shown as well as a Q&A with cast & crew. Admission is free. Chapters from the upcoming novel are available for free at pollyadventures.com.

Is Everyone Guilty in CB Harding’s COMPLICITY? That is the question that writer/director CB Harding would like you to consider in the new feature with an original score by OMPA member Greg Ives. The Boston International Film Festival will host the World Premiere of COMPLICITY on opening weekend, Saturday, April 13th at 6:00pm at the Loews Theater AMC Boston Common. The film is a window into a group of partying teenagers suddenly faced with a life or death situation after an alleged rape. “It’s the darker side of the youth culture we live in,” Harding says, knowing pop culture better than most as director of the Emmy award winning MTV reality series, The Osbournes; the current E! show, Chasing the Saturdays; plus multiple comedy feature films. Harding takes a serious turn into the reality of the sexualization of youth, violence and “pack” mentality. This stylish thriller lures us in to make up our own minds about what is right or wrong and forces us to consider what we would do in the same circumstances in which the characters find themselves. Intense performances from an
emerging ensemble cast of Haley Ramm, Heather Hemmens, Shoshana Bush, Jenna Boyd, Logan Huffman, August Emerson and a cameo appearance by renowned actress Sean Young drive the tension, while newcomer TJ Wilkins’ unaffected, natural performance assures more ahead for this fine actor. “I had no idea that COMPLICITY would be such a topical ‘hot button’ two years after I wrote it,” Harding says. Referring to the recent mass demonstrations in India against gang rape and the recent controversial guilty verdict in Steubenville, Ohio surrounding two high school football players convicted of rape while party-goers used their cell phones to record the assault, but not to call for help to stop. COMPLICITY lays witness to a withering loss of innocence and no matter what one does in the name of allegiance to a group or denial of injustice for person security, that loss will haunt you for the rest of you life. There will be a Q&A with the writer/director, cast member Sean Young, Associate Producer Louise Harding and Composer Greg Ives.
