Dear
Director’s Letter
OMPA members,
It is my sincere hope that our long time members are seeing tangible changes with OMPA. Any organization that has existed for over 3 decades must evolve to meet the needs of the current member population and OMPA is no exception. Past Executive Directors have grown OMPA to reflect the needs of our membership and the industry. The evolution of OMPA continues to reflect the rapid growth of the industry to include, but is not limited to, agencies, animation, games, digital, AR/VR and all of the components necessary to create magic. During OMPA’s Board Retreat in March we strengthened our mission statement to reflect industry growth and those who benefit from the increased tax incentive program. OMPA’s mission is: the champion of Oregon’s film, television and interactive media industry. How OMPA achieves our mission rests upon the pillars of advocacy and by being a professional hub; providing resources, promotion and networking for our members. Drilling down how OMPA fulfills the pillars of the mission then leads to OMPA’s activities and events throughout the year. Every event and product produced by OMPA must meet one or more of our pillars. Our members-only weekly email blasts and job listing emails have been overhauled and are consistently delivered every Monday and Friday. Your emails of appreciation for these changes certainly were uplifting! Now, OMPA’s monthly newsletter, the CallSheet is ready to be revealed. Anne, and our intern Maddison, diligently learned Adobe Suite, thoughtfully highlighted members’ successes and summarized upcoming events in a user-friendly manner. OMPA members should be seeing a shift in our communications, we are celebrating OMPAmembers whenever and wherever we can. To those who feel left out, we invite you to join OMPA which also serves as your personal marketing team! As Oregon’s only trade association for the film, television and interactive media industry, we are appreciative of all of our members. Your membership enables us to continue to be the watchdog for film friendly policies and fiercely advocate to protect our shared interests. Our way of saying thank you to our members is to improve all of our deliverables and to promote our members’ excellent work. Keep sharing your good news with us as we sincerely enjoy celebrating you, #OMPAmembers!
Membership matters,
Janice

Intern Interview
Maddison Mackin has been
our right-hand woman for the last 3 months. Maddison worked with Anne and Janice to create new policies, procedures, and communications (like this CallSheet!) We wish her the best of luck on her aspirations. We know she’ll kill it!
What are you studying? I am a Senior at Fordham University in New York, double majoring in English and Communications & Media Studies with a concentration in Television.
Inside ompa
What are you hoping to do after school? I hope to take my Senior year to really explore and see what path in the TV industry I want to take post grad. I have previous internship experience in both production and communications departments, like the Dr.Oz Show. I thrive off of the excitement, energy and challenge of being on a set and would love to become a producer. How did you get interested in TV? What was your inspiration? I’ve run out of Netflix shows to watch, if that’s any indication of how big of a role TV plays in my life. But, I never thought I could have a viable career in TV until I went to college. I took an Intro to Media Industries course and fell in love! The internship opportunities I’ve had at OMPA and in NYC have inspired me to go for my dreams. Why did you get interested in OMPA? I’m a native Portlander, and when I found out I’d be coming home for the summer, I knew I wanted to find some job or internship in the industry in my hometown. After emailing what felt like a million people, I was referred to contact Janice. Once I did some research on OMPA and chatted with Janice, we both thought it would be a great place to learn and broaden my skills. What is something you’ve learned here at OMPA? I’ve learned a great deal about what a non-profit trade association does for its members and to gain more members. From improving my networking skills to troubleshooting Google docs, I’ve gained so much from my time at OMPA. I had never heard of OMPA before this internship, and now I feel like everybody in the industry is gaining so much from the work that the team is doing. I know that when I return to Oregon, there are opportunities in the TV industry that OMPA is promoting and advocating for.
Maddison Mackin maddison.mackin@comcast.net
What has been your favorite part of interning at OMPA? My favorite part was revamping the CallSheet—what you’re reading right now! I really enjoyed being able to be creative and help improve an OMPA publication that needed some sprucing up. Also, connecting with key players in the production industry of Oregon was a major takeaway.

Journeys

OMPA Member and Director/Screenwriter, Olive Gallagher, Makes Some Exciting Annoucments
live Gallagher, a native of Milford, president/CEO of Moonlight Man Productions, an indie film and television production company, and the screenwriter/director/producer of Journeys, an indie feature set for principal photography in Milford, PA in September 2017.
Journeys takes place in 1949 in Milford, PA and is based on a true story about Gallagher’s father, the late Sidney L. Krawitz, a highly respected attorney and past president of the Pennsylvania Bar Association, and a penniless woman named Olive who came to him to borrow twenty-five dollars to bury her husband because she heard Sid was “an easy touch.” In July, it was announced that she will be returning home to shoot a special scene with two of Journeys key talents in the film, Laila Robins in the lead role of Olive, and Julie Fain Lawrence as Marnie Kramer.;’ “Shooting one scene seemed like a great idea at first, and then I realized that my two brilliant actors didn’t actually have a scene alone with one another in the entire film that I could shoot,” said Gallagher. “That’s when being both the screenwriter as well as the director came in handy. It forced me to re-think a story I’ve been trying to produce for more than twenty years and write a special moment for Olive & Marnie that wasn’t actually in the current working script.” Gallagher went on, “That’s the scene we’ll be shooting in early October on George Street in front of the Judd House, a key entity in the story.” Gallagher continued, “Having the support of the town and its residents is the core reason this film will end up being shot successfully on budget. We couldn’t do it any other way.” “My beloved father,” Gallagher summed up, “instilled in me from my earliest years an appreciation and respect for life in this beautiful, unique small town, and that whatever success one ended up having in life, it would never be achieved alone.” Press Releases Submitted by Olive Gallagher

Why I Prefer Final Cut Pro X An opinion piece by Tyler St. Pierre
When we’re discussing which is better, Final Cut Pro X or Adobe Premiere, I say Final Cut Pro X without a doubt. I’ve been using Final Cut programs for nearly ten years. However, when I went into my BA program, they introduced me to Adobe Premiere as the only editing suite they use. I was taught the ins and outs. Final Cut Pro X remains my favorite. I found Adobe Premiere to be a little overstuffed. I know that it can do a lot. I know that it can communicate easily with other Adobe programs. I understand all of that and that’s incredibly cool. The number of buttons and steps needed to take to complete a task make it all a waste. Once I get all of that done, rendering takes almost twice as long as comparable projects on Final Cut Pro X. All in all, it just felt unnecessary to have so much and
12
take up more time. The export settings are incredible, though. I can change and alter any possible thing you can imagine in an export and I envy that. Final Cut Pro X cannot do that. It gives me the most rudimentary of export settings. That’s currently the only thing I prefer and I’m willing to export my films in a single way if it means the entire editing process is streamlined. Final Cut Pro X most resembles iMovie, which it gets a lot of criticism for, but it is so much more. All of the editing tasks are streamlined because every button I could need is right in front of me. Rendering is done in the background, so my time is conserved. I feel like I don’t have to spend my entire day trying to figure out how to complete a task. I love that.

TheOREGON 90th Anniversary of The General FILM AND Hollywood Theatre Commemorate the Buster Keaton Classic
In honor of the 90th anniversaries of both the Hollywood Theatre and Buster Keaton’s classic film THE GENERAL, which was shot in Cottage Grove, Oregon, the Hollywood Theatre and Oregon Film are proud to present a statewide tour of THE GENERAL with a brand-new original score by renowned Portland composer Mark Orton. During the weeklong tour, the score will be performed live by an all-star seven-piece ensemble featuring members of Tin Hat and the Oregon Symphony. One of the most revered comedies of the silent era, THE GENERALfinds hapless Southern railroad engineer Johnny Gray (Buster Keaton) facing off against Union soldiers during the American Civil War. When Johnny’s fiancée, Annabelle Lee (Marion Mack), is accidentally taken away while on a train stolen by Northern forces, Gray pursues the soldiers, using various modes of transportation in comic action scenes that highlight Keaton’s boundless wit and dexterity. Mark Orton, a Sundance Fellow and composer whose work has been included in the Oscar nominated NEBRASKA, Ken Burns’ THE ROOSEVELTS, and the acclaimed radio program THIS AMERICAN LIFE,was commissioned to create a new score for THE GENERAL.In a nod to the great silent film scores of the past, Orton chose veteran improviser/composers Carla Kihlstedt and Todd Sickafoose to work alongside percussionist Matthias Bossi, who will provide live foley/ sound effects. The full ensemble includes Mousai Remix String Quartet (Oregon Symphony), Carla Kihlstedt (Tin Hat, Tom Waits), Matthias Bossi (Rabbit Rabbit Radio) and Todd Sickafoose (Andrew Bird, Ani Difranco). Watch the trailer here with a glimpse at the new original score by Mark Orton. Click here for more information about the events. See page 24 for showtimes.

ON SET WITH LIMBO FILMS Oregon film production company gets creative for film festival
Submitted by Joshua Leake
With less than 30 days until the Portland Film Festival, you’ll start to see some trailers promoting the event both on local television stations and online. And the beauty of this year’s trailers is that they were produced by a local production company called Limbo Films with local talent and production support from Digital One and Marmoset music licensing.
Each year the 501(c)3 nonprofit, Portland Film Festival selects a new director to produce its festival trailers—screened before every film during the festival. This year, festival alumni and local director Guy Baker took over the reigns. “I love supporting local projects, especially ones that have such a good reputation and reach beyond just Oregon.” The concept behind the trailers challenges what we think of film industry insiders. How far would a director go to make the film perfect? What makes a craft services person so crafty? How many options does wardrobe really need? Baker added that the team at Limbo makes work not seem like work. Limbo Films produces highend broadcast commercials and corporate communications films for clients like the Portland Blazers, Vitamin Water, Tone Journals, Blackberry and Ikea. Baker was joined on the film festival team by Mia Bird and Limbo Films Principal Gary Nolton. The trailers will be publicly released over the next few weeks.

Host a filmmaker Submitted by Joshua Leake The Portland Film Festival is currently seeking homestays for visiting filmmakers for the 2016 Portland Film Festival. Housing is needed from August 29th to September 5th, although individual needs will vary. Many filmmakers will be staying at one of our sponsor hotels, but some are on small budgets and can just use a safe place to stay. Portland Film Festival is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to nurturing filmmakers and audiences, and to celebrating the power of a good story. By offering free to low cost housing, we aim to uphold our efforts in fostering up and coming filmmakers and ultimately bring more filmmakers to Portland. The generosity of hosts are an essential link to our guests’ attendance. Last year we had over 402 visiting filmmakers representing over 226 films. In exchange for hosting a filmmaker, we will be offering festival tickets and passes to participants. If interested, please send a brief response including your name, phone number, address, email to danielle@portlandfilm.org. Representatives will come to your home for a preliminary meeting prior to the festival.

8 Tips
for attending a film festival
Submitted by Joshua Leake
As the executive director and founder of The Portland Film Festival, I was recently invited to jury the Atlanta Film Festival—it was a great experience that reinforced some of my thoughts about preparing and attending film festivals. I compiled some of my tips below: 1. Know before you go. Oregon has over 30 film festivals each year, many of them are simply meant for audiences to enjoy movies—and I love watching movies, but these festivals are more like a film series—for example, the Portland Environmental Film Festival, Filmed by Bike or the Portland Jewish Film Festival. Others more industry-centric festivals incorporate education, parties and industry networking like POW Fest (Portland Oregon Women’s Film Festival), NW Filmmakers and of course the Portland Film Festival—these festivals will have more opportunities for you to meet industry peers. 2. Study the program. Once you’ve decided to attend a festival, make sure you get ahold of a printed program. Read it. Find out what’s unique about this year’s program. Who’s on the Jury? Make a point to meet the jury members—they tend to be the most connected attendees. 3. Make festival friends. Every film, event, and workshop, make a point to introduce yourself. Get to know people. I’m friends with lots of people that I just introduced myself to at a film festival. In fact, I’m producing a film with Chuck Palahniuk because I introduced myself to another filmmaker in London. You never know who you’ll meet at a film festival. Be nice and be genuine. 4. Bring business cards. If you work in the industry, always have business cards ready to hand out. And hand them out. If you are unemployed or want to work in the industry, make personal cards with your name and phone number on them. The people you meet may be your future collaborator, employer or employees. You never know who you will work with next. 5. Don’t ask about budget or camera equipment. During a Q&A at SXSW I saw the host lambast an attendee for asking about budget and camera equipment. Focus your questions on the artistic endeavours or struggles they had, but don’t ask them how much money they spent. It’s an overused question. And if the filmmaker wants to eventually sell their film, agents recommend that they stay tight lipped. Will Showtime pay $400k for a film that only cost $10k. Probably not. 6. Be early and stay late, but give yourself plenty of in between time. It’s hard to get from one event to the other in 5 minutes. Make sure you plan and give yourself time to commute.
20
7. Be the snack/phone charger MacGyver. Bring a bag of snacks, phone chargers and plenty of water. Most likely these will be backup to the concession stand or going out with your new festival friends, but keep the backup just in case. And in case the concession line is too long, you have something to eat/drink. 8. Be social. I’ve interacted with so many attendees at festivals just through social media and Twitter in particular. If you don’t have an account, get one. It’s pretty cool when you interact with someone for days and then finally meet them. And post things complementary to filmmakers—post photos from their Q&As, posters or schedule highlights. Make sure you tag them and use the festival’s #HASHTAG. It’s a great way to find others attending the festival. Look up the hashtag and retweet or interact with other posts. Before you attend any festival, it’s important to know the layout of the land, and these 8 tips will help you have a successful time. Film festivals are primarily about screening new movies, but with the right attitude, you can meet some pretty cool people. Best of luck!
