VEEPS: PROFILES IN INSIGNIFICANCE Premieres at the Portland Film Festival August 30th at Cinema 21

From Portland natives, directors Mike Lay and Brett Warnock, writer Bill Kelter, and artist Wayne Shellabarger comes Veeps: Profiles in Insignificance, a new feature-length motion picture based on the book of the same name. A behindthe-scenes look at the creation of one of the most unlikely political homages of recent history, Veeps follows Kelter and Shellabarger from Portland/Vancouver to the 2008 Democratic & Republican Presidential conventions, followed by an abrupt detour into the American criminal justice system and the fleeting glare of the media spotlight. Nearly seven years in the making, Veeps is an unscripted, original documentary of a journey as improbable as Kelter and Shellabarger’s Vice Presidential obsession. They are joined by Portland actors

Shelley Darcy and John Killeen, and screen newcomers Tim Moxley and Bill Livesay. Veeps premieres as part of the Portland Film Festival at 11:00 AM, Saturday, August 30th, at Cinema 21, 616 NW 21st Ave, Portland. Filmmaker Q&A immediately following. Tickets available through the Portland Film Festival.

BENT Signs New West Coast Rep Internationally award-winning animation and visual effects studio BENT Image Lab has signed Yvette Represents as its new West Coast rep. Yvette Lubinsky, owner of Yvette Represents, brings 20 years of industry experience representing clients up and down the left coast. BENT, which specializes in all forms of animation from stop motion to CG to 2D, etc. was excited to become a part of Lubinsky’s roster of impressive clientele. “We are thrilled to be represented by Yvette,” says BENT Executive Producer Ray Di Carlo. “She brings a wealth of experience and knowledge of the industry and understands what BENT is and where we are going. I’m confident she is the right person to be our West Coast ambassador!” Lubinksy reps companies from all aspects of the media industry including digital, production, visual FX, animation and post. She started her career at an agency working her way up to a broadcast producer position while developing a strong working knowledge of the agency side. Over her 20 year career Lubinsky has seen the media landscape dramatically evolve with emerging technology. She focuses on new ideas and opportunities for her companies vis-à-vis the digital door, seeking out content development

for any screen, not just commercials for TV. “The work speaks for itself and when clients respond to it you need a really strong company infrastructure with talented production behind it,” says Lubinsky. “BENT hits all the right notes.” BENT, which keeps a strong commercial roster on deck and has produced long form programming for TV networks, has recently expanded into the digital domain as well as opening offices in New York and Europe. Yet it’s their traditional animation roots that originally attracted Lubinsky to BENT. “I love stop motion! I find it fascinating,” says Lubinsky of BENT’s animation talents.

BENT welcomes Yvette Lubinsky of Yvette Presents at its new West Coast rep.

The OPEs Are Coming! The OPEs Are Coming! All photos by Melody Saunders

OMPA’s signature fall celebration of Oregon’s film & television industry, The Oregon Performer’s Expo: A Celebration of On-Camera Talent and The Green Carpet Awards (formerly Oregon’s Got Talent & the Superfine Actor Awards) is coming to life Sunday, September 28th in Lincoln Hall on the beautiful PSU Campus in downtown Portland. This OMPA event, presented in association with SAG-AFTRA, the Alliance of Professional Performers NW (APP-NW) and the Portland Area Theatre Alliance (PATA), kicks off at 1pm with a terrific afternoon of panels and a trade show, followed by an evening of socializing, entertainment and awards including a special award acknowledging a person who selflessly goes that extra mile in support of our Industry–often times behind the scenes–the Megann Ratzow Award (formerly the Above and Beyond award).

State Senator Ginny Burdick toasts a very good year.

While this particular event has a specific focus on celebrating and educating oncamera talent, it is in no way an exclusive actors-only celebration. It is, among other things, a celebration of the fact actors are now proudly being recognized as a viable

and valuable part of this Oregon industry community, joining our fellow brothers and sisters working on the other side of the lens in representing the scope and depth of the talent pool Oregon has to offer–one more natural resource securing work for us all in Oregon and, as such, as much their celebration as the actors’.

Inaugural winner, Jerry Buxbaum, accepts his Superfine Stunt Performer Award.

The panels this year include SAGAFTRA’s New Members Orientation, APPNW’s presentation for actors on watching out for themselves and their fellow performers in the workplace, a three-person panel of expert coaches discussing how an actor approaches on-camera acting, and a threeperson panel of stunt actors you’ll flip for! The trade show features vendors offering pertinent information and goods including body workers on “the care and feeding of the instrument.”

08.2014 The OPE Awards, to be presented in the evening program, are given to actors, stunt performers and talent support for sustained excellence in craft and community building. The Megann Ratzow Award is given to that dedicated person who goes that extra mile “just because” to the benefit of all. Nominations for the OPEs are now open and will be received from members in good standing of the sponsoring organizations. Nominations may be registered online at www.ompa.org/awards.

9 The OPEs open at 1 PM with panels and trade show until 5:30 PM, moving into a gala reception from 5:45 to 6:45 PM and the Green Carpet Awards in the Lincoln Hall Theatre at 7 PM. This event is open to industry members and the general public. All are welcome! There is free parking all day and evening in the PSU parking structure across Broadway. Tickets are available at www.ompa.org/events Member, non-member and student prices. Buy your tickets early - this event is expected to fill up quickly. All OPE events will be in PSU’s newly renovated Lincoln Hall at 1620 SW Park. For more information, check www.ompa. org/events or contact peacevoice7@gmail. com.

Uncage the Soul Productions Produces Brand Story for The Ford Family Foundation OMPA member Uncage the Soul Productions was asked by The Ford Family Foundation to produce a new brand story on the history and programs of the foundation. The experience was a classic coming full circle story for Uncage the Soul Productions Producer, John Waller, who had received a scholarship from The Ford Family Foundation in high school and had

worked at Roseburg Forest Products to earn money for college. Returning to Roseburg and Roseburg Forest Products during the production was not only a reminiscent return to his roots, but a fulfilling opportunity to give back to an organization that had supported him nearly 20 years ago. “The Kid” Leaves on Festival Journey... Starting at Home Hawk Productions Inc. and producer Laurie Slater are proud to announce the premiere of director Jeff Winograd’s short film, “The Kid.” Produced entirely in Portland, Oregon, this film is a collaborative effort made with the help of a big crew of Portland talent. The film will appear as part of the Portland Film Festival’s Experimental Shorts program on August 30th, 2014 at the Clinton Street Theater. The film features music from Portland native and multi-instrumentalist for the Decemberists and Black Prairie, Jenny Conlee-Drizos, as well as her husband, Steve Drizos, the longtime drummer for Jerry Joseph and the Jackmormons. Lead actor Ethan Reed McKay brings a wealth of experience to this project even at his young age. He has become one of Portland’s first names and has appeared in a variety of recent projects, including two short films appearing in the Portland Film Festival this year. Cinematographer

Ryan Walters, who has become known for his tremendous work and informative blog on cinematography crafted a look that was at once filmic and classic while taking full advantage of modern technology. Animator Clint Beastwood added a whole additional dimension to the film bringing to life the idea of a mixed medium art piece that blended visual styles, audio compositions, and a story that takes on many dimensions while carrying us through a simple experience. Director Jeff Winograd set out to craft this film to take full advantage of the short film as an art form. Pulling from the wealth of talented cast and crew right in his own backyard, this became a truly collaborative project with everyone bringing a strong sense of themselves to a project that is about finding one’s self in a complicated world. The film is proud to premiere here in Portland where it was written, produced, and edited.

The crew going the extra mile to get the shot for “The Kid,” directed by Jeff Winograd.

Upcoming MOPAN Chapter Events:

Aug 14 at Hole in the Wall BBQ & Sept 18 at Travel Lane County Gateway Center The next regularly scheduled meeting of OMPA’s MOPAN Chapter is Thursday August 14th at the Hole in the Wall BBQ, 1807 Olympic St in Springfield. Per usual, schmoozing starts around 6:30 with anything formal happening scheduled to start around 7pm. At the moment the August event will be a social schmooze/mixer and “run what ya brung” video presentation night with the possibility of a speaker if we can round one up. The next month, we have a howto presentation scheduled for the evening of September 18 at the Travel Lane County Gateway Center. The subject is: Going after filmmaking-eligible grant money, as told by a professional in that arena. We encourage our members and friends to suggest ideas for new venues for our meetings as well as ideas for interesting speakers for our MOPAN meetings and social events. The venue needs to be located for the generally Eugene- or

Springfield-centric members who attend the meetings, and the space needs to be a semi-private room or area which, ideally, would include a TV and related hardware for media presentations. The space would also need to be free as we don’t have a budget for these venues. Our members are also encouraged to propose ideas for meeting presenters. These should be persons of general interest to the membership and the subject can be technical, artistic, economic, or even political if the content is pertinent to our members. We hope our members can give this some thought and contact us with your ideas. Remember, these meetings are for you, and getting the most out of them also means contributing to help make them better. Send all suggestions to MOPAN Chapter President Jeff Johnston at 541-914-1152 or splco-mwry@comcast.net.

“This is Your Theater” Presents FIRE WALK WITH ME Friday, Aug 1 at Hollywood Theatre 30 more tickets needed and it’s on. You voted for it as the next “This is Your Theater” film. Now you can make it happen. On Friday, August 1 at 7:30pm, “This is Your Theater” presents David Lynch’s cult classic TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME—but only if you help! We need just 30 more people to commit to purchasing tickets, and then the screening is on! Commit to purchase here. FIRE WALK WITH ME (1992): A prequel to David Lynch and Mark Frost’s acclaimed TV series “Twin Peaks” (1990-91), the film begins with an FBI investigation into the murder of a waitress in the small Washington town of Deer Meadow, until one of the investigating agents inexplicably disappears. One year later, in the nearby town of Twin Peaks, events are unfolding in the last week in the life of Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), a troubled teenage girl struggling with two boyfriends (Dana Ashbrook and James Marshall), a drug

addiction, and a tense relationship with her difficult, possibly schizophrenic father Leland (Ray Wise). Contains sex, drugs, violence, very loud music, and the kind of inexplicable imagery you’ve come to expect from David Lynch. Help us make this screening happen— buy your tickets today!

Fresh Film Northwest Accepting Submissions through Aug 15 The Northwest Film Center’s Fresh Film Northwest 2014 (formerly the Young People’s Film Festival) is a free-to-enter festival that celebrates the next generation of regional filmmakers by showcasing their work and circulating it around the region and beyond. It is one of the oldest and largest youth film festivals in the nation. The purpose of the festival is to provide recognition for individual talent, to showcase model examples of how media arts can be taught in schools, and to engage youth, parents, educators, and our community partners in building the Northwest regional youth media community. The festival works in partnership with a range of youthfocused community partners to solicit

entries, generate audiences, and circulate outstanding selections. Submissions are judged by a jury panel of professional filmmakers and educators. Individual and group submissions from youth ages 13 to 19 are accepted. The festival is now accepting online submissions through Submittable. The annual deadline is August 15th. There is no entry fee. The festival is made up of two components: a free public screening presented in November in the Whitsell Auditorium as part of the Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival and an online version, which makes offerings available year-round. Clackamas County Celebrates Film Industry On June 28, about 250 invited guests received a backstage tour of a network television program being produced in Clackamas County. The invitation-only event for the Oregon Media Production Association was hosted by Electric Entertainment and sponsored by Clackamas County Business and Economic Development Department, Tourism and Cultural Affairs and PGE. Guests were treated to an exclusive tour of the set of the upcoming TNT television series The Librarians. A portion of the 10-episode series is being filmed at a warehouse in the Clackamas Industrial Area. The show’s production is projected to create approximately 750 full-time jobs held almost exclusively by Oregonians and infuse about $26 million into the local economy.

The Librarians premieres Dec. 7 on TNT. Electric Entertainment has been involved in the filming of previous TNT series, including Leverage which ran for five seasons. Working with the Governor’s Office of Film and Television, Clackamas County provides support to the film, video and multimedia industry to support the industry’s investment in the county. The economic development team is responsible for marketing and attracting media-related businesses to Clackamas County. An example of that support and assistance is the countywide permitting process that simplified and streamlined permitting for potential film locations within the county, which recently received a National Association of Counties Achievement Award.

Guests at the June networking event experienced exclusive tours of the set for the TNT show The Librarians.

OMPA Board Member Aaron Douglas (left) and Portland Chapter Chair Dayan Morgan-Sylvaen enjoyed the hospitality at the June networking event.

Hollywood Theatre Creates New Media Arts Program for Underserved Youth A new initiative from Hollywood Theatre at Open Meadow Middle School has been made possible by a generous $280,000 grant from the Oregon Community Foundation, $100,000 from the Mt. Hood Cable Regulatory Commission, and $10,500 from the Oregon Arts Commission. The Hollywood Theatre has already had a three year partnership with Open Meadow High School (OMHS), and coupled with nearly a decade of working with underserved, middle school age youth, they will “cultivate a sustainable, community powered, schoolbased media arts program at OMMS, bolstering engagement with students’ families and the surrounding community, and increasing the expertise of educators in the area of media arts.” The Hollywood Theatre Studio at OMMS says they aim to increase the capacity of Hollywood Theatre (HT) education programs by building out an unused classroom to create a state of the art, mobile media studio which will expand HT’s existing education programming,

facilitate teacher trainings with the goal of integrating media arts across curricula, and serve as a resource center and access point for out of school arts opportunities at the HT and beyond, connecting students to the larger media arts community. The HT Studio at OMMS will serve 300 students and facilitate the production of an equal number of media arts projects over the course of a 5-year period. We project that studio programs and activities will increase student performance in a number of targeted, measurable areas, including self confidence, initiative, teamwork skills, problem solving and feelings toward school, bolster engagement with students’ families and the surrounding community, and increase the expertise of educators in the area of media arts. The Hollywood Theatre Studio has a number of production labs across Portland. They already work with Grant High School, Native American Youth Family Center, da Vinci Arts Middle, Faubion and Arleta SUN School.

Governators Dominate OMPA Classic Croquet Zarr Studios and crew take 1st Place Golf From the OMPA Sports Desk, Welches - Congratulations Nathan Cherrington and his wife, Lisa, AKA The Governators, who trounced all comers at the five-hour croquet tournament of the OMPA Classic powered by Zarr Studios on July 11th. The Governators, representing the Oregon Governor’s Office of Film and Television, upset Barefoot Bullseyes Signa Cheney and Curtis Kidwell of Bullseye Disc, who were in fact as barefoot as they advertised. The defending champions, Defending Champions, Tim Oakley and Aaron Douglas, were easily trounced in the first rounds, as were many other former and aspiring croquet champs. Play ensued all day in the double elimination, regulation tournament under ideal weather conditions. Golf teams joined croquet guests and other VIPs at the dinner also sponsored by Zarr Studios, hosted by comedian Ron Osborn and OMPA executive director Tom McFadden, who were among the evening’s many special guests. Quite a few stellar raffle prizes were handed out by the Red Thread Prize Patrol, as well as the following athletic awards: ● Bill Floyd of ABS awarded the Women’s KP to Kim Coleman from R2C Group – who also won the Strategy Insurance Women’s Long Drive (awarded by Dennis Noreen!) ● Men’s KP was awarded to JohnMichael Pilot of Zarr Studios team ● Pacific Grip & Lighting Men’s Long Drive winner was Shane Fusion ● Putt Putt winner Michael Fried, representing SAG-AFTRA Portland Local ● Jesse Lee Vint accepted First Place Golf Award on behalf of the Zarr Studios’ team, which included Dennis Troutman, Daniel Baldwin and David Morgan, with an unbelievable score of 53

● Last place was earned by actors Danny Bruno and Hank Cartwright (Wesen Bud Wurstner and Jerry Baxter on TV’s Grimm) who golfed for Wurstner Refrigerator Repair ● Joel Krebs, D.C. Rahe, Brad Boyer and Shane Fusion of team Lucky Limo snatched 2nd place in golf; and Dan Hergert, Jon Stengle, John O’Connell and Jack Johnson of team CMD caught 3rd After-Party Lights Up Welches The no-requests-necessary DJ Pan Am warmed up a party so bright that it torched a bonfire and 18 holes of glowing puttputt. The party ensued until the security came and attempted to shut it down. The association says they are still determining what authority the chief of security has to enforce noise ordinances in unincorporated areas. However, in respect to the local community, the musical portion of the event did conclude at 10pm. The appearance of the po-po did not dissuade the Oregon independent production community dance tribe (led of course by Ms. Jacqueline Gault) from doing their own, often weird, thing. Photography to document the day’s events may be uploaded directly to, and viewed at, the various Facebook posts covering the event, including shots from Cine Rent West’s Photo Hole. Steve Dorsey contributed as auctioneer to help the association raise much-needed funds for itself and for its Media Arts Education scholarship. OMPA is the trade association for Oregon’s commercial, film and television production industry, including motion pictures in the form of video games, web apps and advertising. It was at last year’s OMPA Classic at which the legislative gains made by the trade association—in the form of tax credit

funded filmmaker recruitment dollars— were officially announced. This year the mood was jolly with increased business opportunities throughout the region. This year, thanks to OMPA’s work, that film incentive now includes incentives for video game development which helped incubate the titles Godzilla Live and three other yet-to-be-released games by Pipeworks Software in Eugene, as well as titles from Chroma Games and Fullbright. Organizers say the only downside of all this business and the resulting Oregon

man-hours was that event attendance suffered as a result of the busier local economy. “With three television shows and other projects shooting at the same time, it is hard to get a crowd to come out on a Friday,” says OMPA director Tom McFadden. Even with that, the event brought almost 200 people to The Resort in Welches, some even via the association’s chartered luxury shuttle sponsored by Lucky Limo, which left from the NE Portland location of computer seller TD Curran.

Governators Lisa and Nathan Cherrington (pictured with Will Vinton and members of his team The Vintones) defeated all comers to win the 1st Place in the OMPA Classic croquet tournament, powered by Zarr Studios.
