OREGON MEDIA PRODUCTION ASSN
Dear Industry Member, When we needed Oregon legislators to increase Oregon’s incentive for film and television business, OMPA organized our members and other professionals around Oregon, and together our success has been amazing. Thanks to you, this week we celebrate the release of Wild and The Librarians, for a total of six major projects we earned for Oregon in 2014. In addition, twenty-five other Oregon projects benefitted from the local filmmaker incentive (I-OPIF) since that program was written and passed through the legislature by OMPA members. This level of production would be unimaginable without a strong industry supporting the work and a strong association supporting the advocacy. Commercial advertising production in Oregon is equally dependent on Oregon’s skilled crew and the robust industry resources that we have grown. OMPA needs industry member support to keep up this work. All that we ask is that you list in Oregon’s industry directory. If we don’t show the depth of our crew and services, we don’t make a good case for Oregon. And when you aren’t in the directory, we can’t direct producers to you. Every week producers report to OMPA that they appreciate having our vetted, professional directory, and that they use it to find crew and services. Don’t be left out. If you have not yet done so --
Please order or renew your listing today.
www.SourceOregon.com/GetListed Deadline Extended to December 15th OMPA wants to continue to grow Oregon’s industry in 2015. We can’t do it without you. Thank you for your support. Sincerely,
Tom McFadden OMPA Executive Director 503-228-8822

BENT Goes “Over the Garden Wall” for Cartoon Network Animation studio BENT Image Lab conjures up a series of whimsical storybook promos for Cartoon Network’s “Over the Garden Wall.” Directed by BENT’s Solomon Burbridge, the promos bury the viewer deep inside the beautiful CG/stop-motion pages of a forest-woven book, seamlessly transitioning to clips from the show. “I wanted to take the well worn old trope of ‘from the vaults’ or ‘magic book opening’ and add a new twist to it,” says Burbridge. “The idea of an infinite tunnel book was a great way to further this idea by giving the interior pages dimension and atmosphere. I wanted this to stand apart from and also support the show that it is promoting.” Taking artistic inspiration from Victorian parlor tricks and paper craft, the
opening shot rests on a practical book that flips open to reveal a CG owl, sitting above a deep forest path. The camera sucks the eye down the path and seamlessly transitions to clips from the 2D animated series “Over the Garden Wall.” “The biggest challenge as with most multi-media spots is the integration, making sure it looks as seamless as possible,” says Burbridge. “From the stop motion book to the CG interior it had to seem at once fantastic and believable.” The promos end the way they begin, with a flip through the book’s pages to reveal the show date and time, or a countdown until the big debut. The promos are currently airing on Cartoon Network. “Over the Garden Wall” had its debut on November 3, 2014.

Atomic Direct Partners with Oregon Tradeswomen in Annual Willamette Week Give!Guide This year, Portland-based DRTV agency Atomic Direct will sponsor Oregon Tradeswomen Inc. in Willamette Week’s annual Give!Guide, supporting nonprofits in Oregon. Oregon Tradeswomen, Inc. (OTI) is a Portland-based nonprofit that focuses on educating and mentoring women in the trades. OTI was founded on the principles that women deserve and can attain economic self-sufficiency by pursuing careers in building, mechanical, electrical and utilities while helping and encouraging the trades industry to diversify the workforce. “Given our close connection to the trades and our wealth of tool and hardware clients, Atomic is a strong advocate of education in the trades. We are particularly excited about the work OTI is doing to help women,” said Atomic
Direct CEO Doug Garnett. “The truth is that trade education has become a rare opportunity and our school systems are no longer supporting these directions. It’s important that organizations like OTI have stepped in to fill the gap.” The Give!Guide began in November and features more than 100 nonprofits. Donors can pick from nine categories of nonprofits including community, the arts, health and wellness, education and more. The Give!Guide features six “Big Give Days.” Donors who give a minimum of $10 on these days are eligible for that day’s special prize. Prizes range from a $500 gift card to Powell’s to Timbers and Thorns ticket packages. You can donate to OTI through the Give!Guide link here. The fundraiser runs through December 31, and all donations are tax deductible.

Dawson Media Shoots W Magazine Spread When W Magazine approached director Bill Viola for evocative images, his first call was to cinematographer and long time collaborator, Harry Dawson. Originally scheduled to shoot in NYC in November 2012, the project was cancelled due to the arrival of Hurricane Sandy. Finally back on the books this fall, the project features Jake Gyllenhaal and
Margot Robbie, each looking directly into the camera while lying flat in a tank of slowly moving water. Gyllenhaal and Robbie were shot from above with a RED EPIC on a DRAGON sensor, using 10-20 second takes or, as Dawson explains, “... pretty much as long as they could hold their breath each time!

The magazine needed stills, but the dual challenge of shooting through moving water and delivery at print resolution required shooting 6K digital and then selecting frames for delivery. The project grew in part from Viola and Dawson’s work on “Dreamers,” a series of video artworks that were featured in a 25year retrospective at the Grand Palais in Paris. W Magazine has posted multiple slide shows of the still frames in their December 2014 Arts and Fashion issue here and also featured one of Dawson’s shots of Margot Robbie on the cover. The full digital filmic artworks will be released by Viola Studios in 2015.

The NW Film Center Presents Project Viewfinder The Northwest Film Center proudly presents the premiere screening of the 2014 iteration of Project Viewfinder, the culminating work of a mentorship program for homeless young adults. The film was screened on Wednesday, December 10 at the Northwest Film Center. Project Viewfinder was first established in January 2013 after the Film Center sought out young adults transitioning from homelessness to self-sufficiency that were interested in learning media production techniques. Led by Northwest Film Center School of Film lead faculty member Bushra Azzouz and supporting filmmakers, the project empowers participants to tell their stories using the medium of film. Project Viewfinder is endeavoring to engage the School of Film with underserved members of our community, seeking to enact change on a direct level. “I appreciate that Project Viewfinder could see us, the homeless, and say, ‘We see value in these youth, right here in
our own city,’” says participant Antwoine Thomas. “I want the world to hear the message I have to relay and hopefully consider it.” The evening will consist of short films made by the participants about the myths and realities of homelessness along with interviews and footage of their experiences and struggles. The program will conclude with a Q&A with the participants. A post-film reception for the young filmmakers follows the screening in the Portland Art Museum’s Andrée Stevens Room. This project was inspired by the uplifting story of Hazel Malone, a School of Film student who, mentored by our faculty, turned her life around from one of homelessness to one of hope, joy and creativity. Her story was first told in a short film made for the Film Center’s 40th Anniversary Gala.

POWGirls Expands Program to Empower Young Filmmakers POWFest will host POWGirls in 2015, a unique partnership program with MetroEast Community Media, specifically designed for girls ages 15-18. Over the course of four days in January, a group of selected girls will develop, produce, edit and present a film during the Youth Shorts program at the POWFest March 12-15, 2015. “We want to serve girls who are passionate about creativity, leadership and technology,” said POWFest Education Manager Barb Myers. “We’ll give them video equipment and training to produce their own stories and screen them in front of an audience at POWFest.” Executive Director Tara JohnsonMedinger added: “There is still a major gender disparity in the director’s chair with only 6% of top 250 US films of 2013 directed by women (The Celluloid Ceiling, 2014). The addition of the POWGirls program directly challenges this statistic while fostering the next generation of women filmmakers.”
“Our staff is excited to work with POWFest this year to provide the facilities and equipment needed to develop these young filmmakers,” said MetroEast Education Coordinator Jennifer Dynes. “With our six local cable channels, community media is a powerful resource for underrepresented female filmmakers to show their work to a larger audience.” POWGirls will take place at the studios of MetroEast Community Media – 829 NE 8th Street Gresham, OR 97030 on January 23 and January 29-February 1. The instruction portion of POWGirls will consist of media production training; preproduction (collaborative story creation, storyboarding), camera operation, audio recording, and post-production using industry-standard equipment. In addition, POWGirls participants will have the opportunity to attend screenings and all filmmaker events during POWFestMarch 12-15, 2015 at the Hollywood Theatre. To register for POWGirls 2015, go to www.powfest.com/powgirls/ and click on the registration link.

Click to watch Hope Alexander’s award-winning music video: “Indecisions”
The award was presented at a gala in New York City, to which Hope traveled with program instructor, Deborah Barnes, and other students, including Calen Coates and Sierra Bish, who worked with Hope on the nominated documentary, “Screen Protection: A Bullying Story.” Over 1,000 projects were submitted to the contest and the two chosen from Oregon were from SSC Broadcasting and Social Media students.
The music video is the latest in a long line of projects for Hope and Batta Lash Productions. Last year, she directed and produced a shot-for-shot remake of “The Breakfast Club” using Sabin-Schellenberg B&SM Program students as cast and crew. You can see that film and more from Batta Lash Productions on their YouTube channel. Hope was bitten by the film bug at age six when her grandmother gave her a camera with a video function. She spends her time now applying to film schools and dreaming up new projects. “I continue to be impressed by the level of professionalism, maturity, and ability of the students in representing our department, Sabin-Schellenberg, and the North Clackamas School District with all of their productions,” said Instructor Deborah Barnes.

Red Door Films Answers the Question, “What do you do for fun?” At Red Door, it’s bungee jumps, zip lines, roller coasters, mountain bikes and then some. Just ask writer/director David Poulshock, because he tried all of them (well, almost all of them) in preparation for Red Door’s production of its new campaign for Spirit Mountain Casino. David’s selfie of his first-ever bungee-jump—which he undertook during the tech scout—is hilarious and, well, bleeped. What else does Red Door do for fun? Shooting 11 spots for two different clients over two consecutive weeks: Spirit Mountain and Goodwill Industries of the Columbia Willamette. “Pingponging between two so very different projects was quite the brain twister,” said Poulshock. “Thankfully, producers Dan Gorczyca (Goodwill) and Kevin Lewis (Spirit Mountain) conspired to keep me in line.” Conceived, written and directed by Poulshock, Spirit Mountain’s “Dare To Have Fun” campaign is comprised of six comedic spots that juxtapose extreme thrills with the thrill of winning at Spirit Mountain. Which is more fun? Winning, of course. In the starring roles, Dino Castagno (Ryan Artists) and Alexa Simone (Sports Unlimited) provide comic relief as they attempt some rather precarious adventures, then find real fun at Spirit Mountain. “Dino and Alexa are troopers,” said Poulshock. “Not only do they have great comedic timing, but also an uncanny ability to act while jumping out of high places. I couldn’t even keep my eyes open on the bungee jump, let alone look at a camera on the way down.” Watch for the first two installments of “Dare To Have Fun” hitting the airwaves this December, and more in 2015.
Red Door is also proud to have produced five new projects for Goodwill, including the donation campaign “What Goes around” and four stories about people who have received help from Goodwill. The four stories are told via TV :30s, Web :20s, :30 radio spots, and 3-minute webisodes. Fresh off his 2014 documentary “Raw Materials,” Director Poulshock adapted an improvisational approach to capturing the impromptu interactions of his subjects, using multiple cameras during extended takes in scenes that included dance classes, family picnics, garage band rehearsals, truck routes, and even a family making enchiladas from scratch. “Goodwill always gives us truly great subjects,” said Poulshock. “It’s a joy to tell stories that resonate with so much heart.” The first two Goodwill spots begin airing this December, with more to follow in 2015. While there are too many to list here, the combined production teams involved over forty of Portland’s finest crew members. Directors of Photography were Mark Petersen (Goodwill) and Reed Harkness (Spirit Mountain). Locations included Portland, Bend, Mt. Hood Adventure Park, Tree-To-Tree Adventure Park and Oaks Park. Cameras provided by Koerner Camera Systems. Grip/ Electric: Sasquatch. Sound: Runaway Trains. VTR: Cascade Video Systems. Insurance: Gales Creek. Editors were Nancy Anderson of Bingo Lewis and David Poulshock of Red Door Films. Color correction by Bingo Lewis’ Rob Anderson. Sound design and sweetening by Richard Moore and Randy Johnson of Tag Team Audio. And original music by Cal Scott. VO on Spirit Mountain: October Moore.

Old Joy premiered at Sundance in 2006, won the Tiger Award at the Rotterdam, and Neil and his fellow producers were nominated for the Cassavettes Award at the 2007 Independent Spirit Awards. Paranoid Park premiered in competition at Cannes in 2007 and was nominated for Best Director and Best Feature at the 2008 Independent Spirit Awards. Wendy and Lucy premiered at Cannes in 2008 and was nominated for Best Feature and Best Actress at the 2009 Independent Spirit Awards. Meek’s Cutoff premiered in competition at Venice in 2010. Night Moves premiered in competition at Venice and Toronto in 2013. Neil was also awarded the Producers Award at the 2008 Independent Spirit Awards. Born and raised in Portland, Neil started in commercial and music video production, and currently produces feature films with Anish Savjani through their company filmscience. “As a board member, my area of interest and focus would be the economics involved in making Oregon a better place for medium-sized films. And, with a background in music video and commercial production (on both the production and agency side), I recognize the vital interconnectedness of these different mediums as it relates to business opportunities, job growth, and fair practices.”
Devon Lyon Devon Lyon started his production company in 2005. For the past nine years Devon, and an amazing team of professionals and collaborators, have produced award-winning jobs for a variety of clients from national brands to local companies. Devon acts as a producer and director on most productions and loves the challenge each job presents. Over the years, Devon has testified in front of the Oregon Senate on behalf of OMPA members as well as lobbied individual House and Senate members. His direct involvement with OMPA started in 2008 when Devon began attending OMPA Government Affairs subcommittee meetings as his schedule allowed. “A highly functional board should be made up of a good mix of working professionals from across our diverse industry. I believe my nearly ten years of direct production experience working with creative agencies, national brands and local companies gives me a good perspective on the many different aspects of our industry. My years working in Oregon politics and my on-going involvement with OMPA’s lobbying efforts for IOPIF and OPIF position me to quickly integrate into one of the most important functions of the board. I will work closely with my colleagues on our shared goals of not just bringing more and better work to Oregon, but continuing to solidify what we have achieved. We must present a well-organized, unified and clear-messaged industry to the outside world.”

Mary McDonald-Lewis Mary McDonald-Lewis is a 30+ year veteran of the entertainment industry. She is a working voice actor and has been fortunate enough to work in commercials, film, television and animation - you might recall her as the voice of Lady Jaye on GI Joe, Lois Lane on Superfriends, as “Mary,” the voice of OnStar, and as the soothing voice of Lunesta, among hundreds of other jobs. Mary is also a stage and on-camera actor, seen most recently as Frau Pech on Grimm. MaryMac is a union activist as well, having helped open the SAG office in Portland 20+ years ago and serving on the national board as Oregon’s national representative since that time. She is active on the Communications Committee at SAG-AFTRA and on both the Commercial and Animation Contract negotiating committees, helping to land strong contracts for her members. Her local work includes steadfast fighting for our film incentives and to keep a SAG-AFTRA union and APP-NW presence in Oregon. As dialect coach, she loves her work on Leverage and Grimm, for Hallmark Hall of Fame and in films like Twilight and very recently, Green Room. Clients include Patrick Stewart, Rob Pattinson, Dichen Lachman, Gina Bellman, Timothy Hutton, William Hurt and dozens more. “‘Diversity and opportunity.’ These are my two areas of focus. I want more women and folks of color, more folks of all gender identifications in leadership positions; I want a welcoming, accessible organization whose goals, events, and language affirm this. And I want all of us to have a shot at the best work this industry offers. That means a powerful relationship with our Governor and political reps; a good and strong friendship with our Film Commission; a connected community; and ongoing professional training and education. Let me at ‘em!”
Award of Excellence.
Greg McMickle - listings Greg McMickle is a 35-year veteran of the entertainment industry with a degree in Film & Television Production. During the 1980’s McMickle split his time between production and the music industry and received a Platinum Album for “We Are The World.” Since 1985 he has worked primarily as a Production Designer or Property Master in over 50 films including The Onion Field, Wild, Twin Peaks, I’m Gonna Git U Sucka and Mr. Holland’s Opus and on-camera in Even Cowgirls Get The Blues. “I am both flattered and honored to be considered for an OMPA board position. Shortly after moving home to Oregon from Los Angeles I became a member of the OMPA and have encouraged others towards membership over the past two and a half decades. If elected I look forward to helping grow OMPA and to increase its relevance within our ever changing world of media technology.”

Gretchen Miller Past OMPA co-chair of post-production Coming from California, Miller has a background in animation where she and business partner, Jim Clark, co-created the Warner Brothers children’s show, “Firehouse Tales.” After relocating to the northwest, Miller was one of the first producers at Bent Image Lab, where she produced a number of stop motion, computer generated and live action projects. After leaving Bent, she and Clark formed HIVE-FX. Now in its sixth year of operation, HIVE-FX is one of the primary visual effects vendors for NBC’s Grimm Television series. “As a board member of the OMPA, I will continue to work with local and state agencies to push for additional film incentives. The incentives are essential to our film and television community. Furthermore, I will support the mission of the OMPA to expand its membership and develop awareness of the depth of talented resources here in the Northwest. This is an important time for the Film and TV industry in Oregon. We have achieved some critical recognition for our resources and locations. We must keep working to expand our talent pool so we can continue to attract interesting and lucrative projects to our state.” CHAPTER CHAIR NOMINEES Portland Chapter Dayan Morgan-Sylvaen I’m a makeup/makeup effects artist and have been in the film industry since 2008, which is a complete departure from the work I did previously, as a fundraiser and event planner for Oregon political candidates and PACs. I love being challenged in my work. Need a severed head in two hours, with a budget of $50? I’m on it! I’m an avid film watcher with a special place in my heart for documentaries, and the more obscure, the better (ironic since they never seem to need makeup artists!) And, I’m completely obsessed with my two Pomeranians! I’m so grateful that I’ve been able to be a part of the Portland Chapter since its inception and am looking forward to continuing as the Chapter’s Chair. Chapter involvement has provided me with the opportunity to work with a fantastic committee and to experience the Chapter’s growth and evolution. This coming year is shaping up to be even more exciting, bringing the members more networking events, chances to share their work, and educational & mentoring opportunities. Also, it’s a hell of a lot of fun!
