Digital One Receives Double Honors at Rosey Awards Digital One, a premier post-production studio encamped on the banks of the Willamette River, has been honored by the Portland Advertising Federation (PAF) with two Rosey Awards in the audio category for web videos produced for MasterCraft and Chrome Industries. The two award-winning web films follow on the coat tails of an impressive year for Digital One. After receiving an AICP Award from the Association of Independent Commercial Producers, a permanent home in the Museum of Modern Art’s archives, and a place on the CLIO Awards shortlist, MasterCraft’s “Mission 04: History Is History” can now add Rosey Award to its running list of accolades. Produced by Nemo Design; shot, edited, and directed by Bump Films; and sound design crafted by Digital One audio engineer Chip Sloan. Perhaps the most unique aspect of the web film is not the sound design per se, but the absence of music throughout. Sloan began working with the agency creative team in pre-production, to determine how best to capture location audio and accentuate the signature MasterCraft roar. The second Rosey Award was bestowed upon “Massan Barrage Cargo,” a threeminute web film directed and produced by Kamp Grizzly for the San Francisco-based bike outfitter Chrome Industries. For this endeavor, Sloan began with a blank canvas, as there was no original location audio captured during the shoot. First and foremost a problem solver and cycle enthusiast, Sloan hit the streets on his fixed gear bicycle to record all-original and authentic foley to accompany the fearless protagonist, San Francisco fixed gear icon Massan Fluker. Glimpses of quintessential Portland are seen throughout the piece, culminating in an epic and striking love letter to the City of Roses.
Digital One producer Amy Polansky states, “More now than ever, respect and priority is being given to quality audio that rises above the white noise of the ubiquitous web video.” Furthermore, Sloan recently revealed, “the best part of these projects was that they were beautifully shot, and had solid creative briefs that allowed freedom [as a sound designer] to be unabashedly creative and just go to town.” He continues: “It’s an honor for such well produced and creatively jarring pieces to be recognized by the advertising community, and I’m truly thrilled to have been a part of the process.” One thing is clear: Digital One plans to continue working hard, bringing tasteful and poignant auditory experiences to the masses, while simultaneously allowing storytellers to tell their stories and find their voice.

Heather Harlow Returns to PIFF with “The Punishing Business” starring Storm Large Screening Sunday, February 8, 1pm at the Whitsell Auditorium Five years after winning the 2009 Portland International Film Festival’s “Best of Shorts” Award for her criticallyacclaimed 17-minute short, “Nous Deux Encore,” filmmaker Heather Harlow will be back at PIFF on Sunday, February 8, 2015, to unveil her new film, “The Punishing Business.” The unique narrative stars legendary songstress Storm Large in an emotionally-charged 19 minutes of rising tension between Ellen, a down-onher-luck ex-convict, and her landlady’s developmentally-disabled daughter Addie, who refuses to leave Ellen alone. When the story begins, Ellen is almost impervious to Addie’s mental limitations, finding her more amusing than annoying. But as Addie’s aggressive actions escalate, Ellen suddenly realizes that something terrible must have happened and Addie would tell her if she could. “The Punishing Business” is based on an original screenplay by award-winning Eugene writer Sarah Skibinski, who spent nearly a decade managing group homes for people suffering with developmental disabilities.
“Even though one of the characters has severe physical disabilities and the other one doesn’t, I see them as two outcasts sharing many of the same emotional issues,” says Skibinski. “Strip away the superficial stuff and you have two people who are surprisingly very much alike.” Harlow remembers that “the very first time I read the script, I immediately thought of Storm. Ellen’s character is smart, witty, sharp, funny, and a little rough – altogether, a lot of layers and complexity. Not surprisingly, Storm was really able to draw that out. It was an honor to work with her!” For the rest of the cast, Harlow chose Melissa Kaiser to play Addie, Sean McGrath for Ellen’s parole officer, and Shade Streeter as the neighborhood kid playing hoops in front of Ellen’s house who suddenly becomes Addie’s target. “The Punishing Business” was edited by acclaimed independent filmmaker James Westby (RID OF ME, THE AUTEUR and FILM GEEK), shot by noted Northwest cinematographer Gary Nolton, and scored by composer Michael Herrman. For more information, please go to www. thepunishingbusiness.com.
