The Value of Being Included in OMPA’s SourceOregon Directory When I decided to pursue a career in the film industry I had no idea what to expect. I wasn’t sure where my next job would come from. One thing I was certain of was that listing in the SourceOregon directory that OMPA publishes was the way to get my name out to people in a position to hire me. I still feel as strongly about that today as that day 16 years ago when I dropped off my first completed Call for Listings. A lot has changed in that time; pagers are a thing of the past, the computers we once lugged to the office now fit in our pockets and internet access is a necessity on set. One thing that has stayed the same is the importance of OMPA and SourceOregon in bringing together the necessary crew and vendors for a production. When I approach crew about listing in SourceOregon, one thing I hear is that they feel like jobs come from repeat clients. What they don’t know is that Production Managers use the ‘Source’ as a back up when the town is busy and their first choice is already booked or when the contact information for a trusted crew member suddenly has disappeared from their phone. It’s the only comprehensive vetted list of crew and services in Oregon. SourceOregon is indispensable in the frantic, high-stress environment in which we work. The last five years have been a phenomenal time in our industry. We have been lucky enough to have 3 series and countless movies and commercials film here during that time. It’s easy to get complacent about where your next job will come from. Listing in SourceOregon is crucial to staying connected to jobs, and gives you an edge over folks who aren’t. Paula Webb began has been a freelancer in the Oregon Film Industry and OMPA member since 1998. She is one of Oregon’s most active producers and production managers, working for local and national clients.

NW Film Center Presents 41st Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival November 7-15, 2014 in Portland The Northwest Film Center is proud to announce the line-up for its 41st annual survey of new work by regional media artists, the Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival (formerly the Northwest Film & Video Festival), which takes place November 7-15, 2014. This year’s Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival (NWFest41) presents 45+ short and feature films from filmmakers across the Northwest, selected by guest Festival judge Christopher Rauschenberg, much lauded photographer and cofounder of Portland’s trailblazing Blue Sky Gallery. Festival film highlights include Vera Brenner-Sung’s “meditation on displacement and adaptation in the contemporary American West,” BELLA VISTA; John Gussman and Jessica Plumb’s ecologically-minded documentary RETURN OF THE RIVER, concerning water and tribal rights on the Elwha River; Beth Harrington’s THE WINDING STREAM, an examination of the enduring impact of the original Carter Family on the musical landscape; and Sue Arbuthnot and Richard Wilhelm’s family farming doc, DRYLAND.
In addition to features, the Festival offers three programs of short films. Shorts I—a collection of films from makers based in Portland, OR; Eugene, OR; Seattle, WA; Edmonds, WA; Belgrade, MT; Livingston, MT; and Vancouver, BC—will kick off the Festival on opening night at 7 PM with filmmakers in attendance. Shorts II and Shorts III are collections of films by makers throughout the NW region, ranging from the experimental to animation to narrative and non-fiction. All three Shorts programs will screen twice during the Festival. Beyond the numerous screenings on offer, the Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival also provides opportunities for aspiring and working filmmakers to interact directly with peers and industry professionals through events such as the Northwest Filmmakers’ Un-Conference (previously BarCamp) an opportunity for the regional filmmaking community to gather together and explore the issues and challenges facing today’s independent filmmaker. Filmmakers whose work did not make it into the Festival have been invited to submit their short film into the popular program, “What’s Wrong
11.2014
with this Picture?,” hosted by Seattle curator Warren Etheredge, for a program illuminating the pitfalls of selling your film to a programmer in two minutes or less. Additionally, NWFest41 will cater to makers via two participatory workshops. On Sunday, November 9 from 2-4 PM, Academy Award-nominated and Emmy winning director Irene Taylor Brodsky (HEAR AND NOW) will lead an intensive on “Developing the Doc-Maker’s Ear for Story,” which will be followed immediately after by a 4:30 PM screening of her film ONE LAST HUG (…AND A FEW SMOOCHES): THREE DAYS AT GRIEF CAMP. Saturday, November 15 at 10 AM-3 PM, musician/composer Mark Orton (NEBRASKA, BOXTROLLS) will
5
enlighten in a workshop entitled “Inside the World of Film Composing.” Both workshops will take place at the Northwest Film Center’s School of Film, located at 934 SW Salmon St. This year’s Opening Night party, sponsored by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and North by Northwest Winery, will be held at the Film Center’s School of Film. Festival screenings will take place at NW Film Center’s Whitsell Auditorium, located in the Portland Art Museum, 1219 SW Park Ave. For more information, visit The 41st Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival microsite, where you can access film descriptions, ticketing links and more.

Civic-minded Prisoners Seek Editing Assistance for Fundraising Project A group of prisoners and staff at Oregon State Penitentiary who, along with more than 42 community organizations and businesses, put on a Car & Bike Show as a fundraiser for a charitable organization are looking for assistance in producing a DVD of this year’s event. The Annual Car & Bike Show at the Oregon State Penitentiary began in 1977 with the Highwallers Racing Team. The Highwallers Team was made up of prisoners who worked on the racecar that an outside driver would then take out to races. When the Highwallers disbanded, the tradition of the Car Show lived on through what has developed into today’s event. The event is made financially possible through entry fees, financial and item donations from businesses, silent auction items that guests bid on, fundraising done by the prisoners amongst themselves, event T-Shirt sales and event DVD sales. This year the Car & Bike Show raised funds for Camp Agape, a 4-day experience for children ages 7-17 who
have a parent in prison, with the purpose of breaking cycles of incarceration. Camp Agape is a partnership of many churches and individuals who have a heart for these special kids and their families. Participation is free to all who attend, and the $350 cost of sending a child to camp is raised through fundraising such as the Car & Bike show. More information on Camp Agape is at www.campagapeoregon.com. The assistance being sought is in editing and creating a 60-90 minute DVD of the 2014 Car & Bike Show, using HD video and stills that the group has shot. Due to limited financial resources, only $100 in budget is available for this project. If interested, please contact Rafael Mora at Jaime.A.Rodriguez@doc.state.or.us Copies of the DVD will be given to each sponsor and to each person who entered a vehicle or bike. Additional DVDs may be purchased by people in the community or by prisoners to send to their families.

ASMP Oregon Presents National Geographic Photographer Randy Olson
Social Documentary Photography: How to Make Your Audience Care about Complex Issues Documentary photographer Randy Olson’s 30+ National Geographic projects have taken him to almost every continent and have had him cover subjects from Ituri Forest Pygmies to China’s “comfort class.” Join ASMP for an intimate evening with Randy as he discusses how to gain access and inject intimacy into your imagery. Randy began his career as a newspaper photographer and received an Alicia Patterson Foundation Fellowship to support a seven-year project documenting a family with AIDS, and a first place Robert F. Kennedy Award for his story on problems with Section 8 housing. He was also awarded the Nikon Sabbatical grant and a grant from the National Archives to save the Pictures of the Year collection. Olson was the Magazine Photographer of the Year in the Pictures of the Year International (POYi) competition and was also awarded POYi’s Newspaper Photographer of the Year - one of only two photographers to win in both media in the
largest photojournalism contest operating continuously since World War II. For the last 10 years Olson has concentrated on population issues, resource issues and disappearing cultures. One of the most powerful aspects of looking at these three assignment areas is that we are experiencing a huge loss of human diversity as people transition from rural to urban and as growing populations need more resources. Some isolated, rural population groups (like Pygmies) are disappearing as quickly as Randy photographs them. Register here. Sign up soon; space is limited. When: Thursday, November 20, 2014, 7 to 8 PM (Social time starts at 6:30 PM) Where: 1801 NW Northrup St, Portland, OR Cost: $10.00 — ASMP member $20.00 — non-member $5.00 — Student More information is available on the ASMP website.

Hollywood Theatre Presents INTERSTELLAR on 35mm Opening Nov 5, 2014
This November marks the debut of one of the biggest movies of the year: Christopher Nolan’s INTERSTELLAR, starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and Michael Caine. As fans of Christopher Nolan (we love his advocacy for 35mm film), the Hollywood Theatre is proud to announce that INTERSTELLAR will open here in an exclusive Portland 35mm engagement starting Wednesday, November 5. That’s two
days before its wide release in other theaters. Plus, we’ll be hosting a special 35mm advance screening of the movie on Tuesday, November 4 at 8:00pm. Advance tickets are highly recommended, available here! Once INTERSTELLAR opens in wide release on November 7, the Hollywood Theatre will feature an extended run of the movie in both 35mm and DCP formats. But trust us, for a movie this epic, you’re going to want to see it on film.
In INTERSTELLAR, the highly anticipated film from director Christopher Nolan (THE DARK KNIGHT, INCEPTION, MEMENTO), a group of explorers makes use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.

2014 BendFilm Festival Sales Outpaced Previous Year 2015 Dates Announced
BendFilm took in 9% more in ticket, pass and merchandise sales during the 2014 festival than during the previous fest, according to festival organizers. In total, $94,007 was brought in and over 7,600 people attended this year’s festival. 10 of the films sold out during the busy weekend. The 2015 festival will take place October 8-11, 2015. Compliments have flowed in via email from filmmakers and festivalgoers alike. Seth Caplan, of Audience Award-winning ‘The Young Kieslowski’ said, “THANK YOU from the entire ‘The Young Kiselowski’ team. We were absolutely blown away by your festival and the city of Bend. You have a special collection of people at your festival and we felt extremely welcome by your staff, volunteers and audiences – and the other filmmakers and their films were super cool, too! Thanks for organizing such a fantastic film festival. I hope I can come back with my next film.” Festival Director, Todd Looby, said, “When I applied for this position, I had a feeling that Bend is the perfect place for a film festival. This year confirmed my assumption. Bend has a population of people that appreciate art, have
a critical eye and also warmly welcome visitors. Our community provided the fest tremendous support by attending screenings, housing our filmmakers, volunteering, and supporting the fest financially. All of our visiting filmmakers were blown away by the reception they and their films received. This is a rare thing in the festival landscape and Bend should be proud. There is so much more BendFilm can give to this community and we are inspired to work harder to provide great programming throughout the upcoming year. Thank you, Bend.” Fans called out the special magic that came from rubbing elbows with visiting filmmakers and jurors. One filmmaker said that a highlight of the festival for him was that he’d met festivalgoer and renowned author Rick Steeves, who was a guest at the after party at The Blacksmith restaurant, the night of the awards ceremony. With the festival having barely ended, the BendFilm team is busy evaluating how to enhance the festival during 2015, bringing year-round programming, kids’ films, and other educational components into the line-up.

(Un)realistic Expectations By Doug Baldwin
Soon after I first hit Portland, I landed a job as the creative director of a small advertising agency. One of my duties was creating spots for a bunch of local car dealerships. This job carried with it no small amount of stress, often generated by change orders that demanded an immediate modification to a just-produced spot to accommodate a change in price or product availability. So it was that I placed a call to a local AM station one morning and spoke to the production manager, a talented fellow I’ll call “Jack.” This was in the late 1980s, way pre-digital, so Jack’s job entailed recording spots (often using his own radio-perfect voice) then editing them by hand. Ever see this old-fashioned editing process? It entailed a razor blade and adhesive tape, plus precision and time. Unfortunately, at this particular radio station time was in short supply, because the sales staff was hitting it out of the park. Jack’s workload was beyond frenetic. The poor guy was careening from one spot to another, slapping down audio tracks, adding generic off-the-shelf music for background, then working his razor-blade magic. About sixteen times a day. He’d become the walking definition of “stress.” This particular day, one of those dreaded change orders had crossed my desk, so I phoned the direct line into Jack’s studio. Me: It’s Doug. Do you have time to—“ Jack (screaming): “I’M ON FIRE!!!” He was soon gone from the station.
Flash forward to now. The razor blade has been replaced by a keyboard and mouse. And what is this “audio tape” you speak of? Given the current technology, certainly the Jack of 2014 would no longer be spontaneously combusting, would be able to handle unrealistic client demands with a smile and savoir faire, right? Nope. We’d still see steam issuing from Jack’s ears because just as technology has progressed, clients’ expectations have intensified. Reality check: In 2014, what defines us as media professionals, at least partially, is our ability to satisfy wacky scheduling expectations and to do so cheerfully. But no matter how crushing the deadline, you must attempt to make a creative contribution that improves your “product.” Be aware: Creativity, like a sense of humor, is highly subjective. What you find creative may in fact be foolish or ho-hum to your client. Hopefully, over time you’ll have the opportunity to gauge your client’s creativity threshold. A closing note: Take comfort in the fact that we’re all facing the same kind of crazy deadlines. Even your client. But if I were Jack, I’d still keep a fire extinguisher nearby. You can contact Doug at doug@dbwrites.com.

Meet New OMPA Member “Kaz” (AKA Dennis Kasunic) “I worked in the film industry mainly as a camera assistant for 15 years before receiving my Masters of Arts in Oriental Medicine. You may wonder how a film guy gets into Chinese Medicine. Well, on the set I always had an eye for observation and a keen interest on how some got stressed and sick while others remained focused and healthy. The journey brought me to complete my degree and become a Licensed Acupuncturist who has helped hundreds of people in the Pearl District find relief and wellness without more drugs and surgeries. I administer Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine, Tuina (Deep Tissue Therapeutic) Massage, E-stim and Gua Sha (manual muscle manipulation) in my treatments. Most insurance is accepted (including out of state). Fax/email me your insurance information and I will gladly verify your benefits for you and get you on the road to sound sleep, increased energy, decreased stress and better sex! Available to treat crew/ talent in my Pearl District location or onlocation.”

Voices in Action: Human Rights on Film Series Continues Through November 6, 2014
While cinema provides entertainment and escape, for many committed filmmakers and viewers it is a vital medium of engagement and a powerful tool for social action. Tackling wideranging, thought-provoking issues, activist filmmakers help deepen our awareness of injustice and the values of dignity and equality as they tell universal stories of struggle and triumph. We hope these informative and inspirational films will broaden understanding and stimulate involvement as they reveal hearts and minds focused on challenges that touch us all. Our thanks go to the Human Rights Watch Film Festivals in London and New York for their
showcasing and circulating of works of vitally engaged filmmakers, and KBOO Community Radio for their media sponsorship. The series started in October. Cast Iron Studios Hosts Meals for Monologues Food Drive & Potluck, Nov 25 in Portland Cast Iron Studios hosts Meals for Monologues, a food drive benefiting Oregon Food Bank and a pre-holiday meet-n-greet potluck on Tuesday, November 25. Actors from far and wide are invited to come to Cast Iron Studios (1430 SE 3rd Ave, Suite 100, Portland, OR 97214) for an open general audition call, where you can be seen by a casting director in exchange for two or three non-perishable food items benefitting the Oregon Food Bank. ● Perform a short, prepared monologue (or two!) of your own choosing. ● Choose a contemporary piece (we just don’t cast much Shakespeare). ● Audition slots are 2 MINUTES MAX, so make the best use of your time! ● No appointment necessary. One day only. First come, first served.
Bring an appetizer, potluck dish or dessert treat and have a bite at this unique pre-holiday party. After you read for one of our casting directors—or even if you’re not auditioning and just want to say hi—stick around for rubbing elbows and general merriment. If you’re a regular at the Cast Iron offices, please consider leaving audition slots for others and simply come for the party. Schedule: 12 PM - 6 PM* - Meals for Monologues (*No auditions will take place 2:30PM-3PM, to give Casting Directors a short break.) 5 PM - 7 PM - Potluck

Oregon Actors Shine
All photos courtesy of Melody Saunders Photography OMPA, the Portland Area Theater Alliance, SAG-AFTRA actors union, the Oregon Governor’s Office of Film and Television, and the Alliance of Professional PerformersNorthwest together supported a major initiative of Oregon’s film and video industry with the Oregon Actors Awards on October 12. That initiative? To properly celebrate Oregon’s on-camera talent. OMPA understands that professional performers, like the experienced crew, equipment vendors and support services, are part of what makes Oregon a fertile ground for the business of media making. What began several years ago as OMPA’s “Oregon’s Got Talent” got a facelift with the help of an active participation of the OMPA Talent Committee, and producing and leadership from OMPA Board Member Jacqueline Gault. Local luminaries were on hand at the gala, which opened with a red carpet event, and interviews with KGW-TV’s Erica Heatquist, and Byron Beck of GoLocal PDX. Presenters at the event included Talent Committee co-Chairs actor David Freedman and Jennifer Kelly (actor and Technical Director at Red Thread Entertainment), actor Mercedes Rose, star of breakout web video hit “Haunting of Sunshine Girl” Paige McKenzie, actor Ted Rooney, actor Yolanda Porter representing APP-NW, Duane Hanson (President of SAGAFTRA Portland), and OMPA President Lisa Cicala.
And the 2014 Oregon Actors Awards winners are: ● Best Male Actor: Danny Bruno (GRIMM series regular, Portlandia) ● Best Female Actor: Jana Lee Hamblin (several appearances on Portlandia, A Standing Still) ● Best Stunt Performer: Kendall Wells (The Librarians, GRIMM, The Hunted) ● Talent Support: Dennis Troutman (Option Model and Media) ● “Megann Ratzow Above and Beyond” Service award: Harold Phillips Thanks to funding by presenting partner Koerner Camera Systems and support from the many partners and agency sponsors, event costs were fully supported so that all of the ticket sales were donated to PATA’s Valentine Fund, which provides financial assistance to members of the Portland-area theatre community in times of medical or personal emergency. The event raised over $900 for the fund. The awards recognize service to the community as much as the craft of acting, and the recipients exemplified that spirit. The overarching theme of the evening was that Oregon is lucky to have a supportive acting community that respects hard work and personal development, as well as contributing to the success of others.
