Director’s Letter Oregon’s Fertile Soil Continues to Cultivate Film, TV, Interactive Oregon’s film and television business has increased over 20 times since 2003 - from $6 million to over $125 million. Oregon is better equipped to handle the increase in business thanks to the constant investment of Oregonians to continually educate themselves on technology, workflow and business practices to be the most competitive place to do production business in America. As the rate of business producing in Oregon continues to increase so does the appetite for private investment. One concrete example: with increased business, Oregon investors have been developing production stages to serve commercial, film and television at a rate of over one per year. (Oregon stages/soundstages are listed at www.SourceOregon.com). Most film and television projects that come to Oregon from out of state utilize the Oregon Production Investment Fund (OPIF) which keeps Oregon competitive with other states and countries that offer rebates, and is available to projects with budgets of at least $1 million - while supplies of the OPIF fund last. Oregon-based producers benefit from the same production rebate but with lower-budget threshold of $75,000 under the iOPIF program that OMPA passed into law in 2009. Thanks to the increases to the Oregon film incentive earned by OMPA and their allied partners, we are able to continue to earn more business for Oregon and more jobs for Oregonians every year. At what point does Oregon’s ability to satisfy work top out? That is a very real question for both Oregon’s industry and Oregon’s policy makers, who will have the opportunity to re-visit the allocation of the OPIF and the iOPIF fund this coming legislative session that starts in February 2015. The 2007 study “Economic Impact Analysis of the Oregon Film and Video Industry” cites $709 million total media production in Oregon, with $1.39 billion total economic impact of on the state.

Northwest Film Center presents EVERGREEN Sept 10, 7pm at Whitsell Auditorium, Portland The Northwest Film Center’s continuing commitment to highlighting cinematic works produced in the Northwest region is housed within its Northwest Tracking series. On Wednesday, September 10, the Film Center is thrilled to present EVERGREEN, the new film by Seattle-based writer/ director/actor Riley Morton. The passage of I-502—the ballot initiative that legalized recreational marijuana usage in Washington State— attracted national attention. EVERGREEN follows the successful campaign in detail and provides an overview of the debates involved in pushing the initiative to the finish line. “Morton captures the crucial moment when plenty of people agree on the general idea of legalization, but differ wildly on its specifics. The dissenting voices come not from those opposed to the legalization, but rather the terms of regulation set fort in the initiative. Clackamas Students’ Films Selected for Film Festival The students in the Broadcast and Social Media Program at Clackamas County’s Sabin Schellenberg Professional Technical Center have learned that two of their films, “Screen Protection: A Bullying Story” and “Indecisions,” are Official Selections for the 2014 Varsity Brands All American High School Film Festival. “Screen Protection” was also an official selection for the All American Film festival in New York.
Instructor Deborah Barnes, who mentors these student filmmakers, is working with school administrators to take a group of them to New York in October to attend the official screenings. “We will need to fundraise in order for the students and me to go,” she said. She added that, if the trip is approved, she and the students will be reaching out to the community for help to fund the trip. Click the movie still to view “Screen Protection.”

Why Can’t They Hit Their Marks A DP Better Understands Actors By OMPA member Mark Petersen – Moviemaking is a collaborative business. All the parts are interdependent. A DP understanding the director’s process is as valuable as an actor having an awareness of lens size and the direction of the key light. The more we know about each others’ jobs and what it takes for each of us to create something authentic— whether it be an actor, editor, grip or set dresser—the better the film. That’s why I encourage not only actors but directors, DPs, technicians, and art department to attend the Oregon Actors Awards to expand our knowledge and celebrate our state’s finest actors and performers. A few years ago I was bitching to a friend on how stuck and unmotivated I was in my craft as a cinematographer. My friend, who is also a DP, suggested I take the workshop “Directing Actors,” by Judith Weston. I was pretty incredulous about the whole thing and not really seeing how this would benefit the dynamic range of a camera or the workflow issues I’ll have with post. Additionally, I was intimidated by the whole private process between director and actor, but I took the workshop hoping I would learn something about the director’s perspective and, in turn, inform my process as a cinematographer. It is safe to say the workshop dramatically impacted how I prepare myself and my crew for a project. Not only did it enlighten me to the director’s perspective, it smashed open a huge door into what scene work really is. I learned that for an actor to authentically discover a character through emotion and words it takes a lot of hard, challenging interior work. Everything counts, everything is absorbed. A singular prop, a light, a coat, or another emotion in the room all contribute to the creation of something genuine.
As a DP, I now approach cinematography with a wider palette. When I know what each character wants in the scene it lends purpose to camera placement, movement, lighting and set dressing. The intention of the actor can also dictate how we shoot a scene. For example: if the direction calls for an actor to persuade as opposed to demand, I may choose a frame, angle or camera movement to support that intention.

Matchlight Films’ “Chryzinium” Premieres at Grand Theater (Salem) Sept 23, 7pm at Grand Theater Matchlight Films of Salem premieres the short film version of “Chryzinium” on September 23rd, 2014 at the Grand Theater (191 High Street, Salem). Doors open to the public at 6:30 PM with the show beginning promptly at 7:00 PM. A minimum donation of two cans of food or $2 designated to Salem’s Union Gospel Mission is much appreciated. While it may just be a short film, the story is abundant on subject matter, suspense, and visual effects. John Gussman and his daughter Madison are subjects of a post-apocalyptic era in which the controversial life-altering drug, Chryzinium, has become universal law. “Chryzinium” asks the basic question: how far will we go as the human race to survive? Based on scientific experiments dating back to the 1940s, the moral and social ramifications of then are still the issues of today. “The charm of Salem and the mid-Willamette Valley is itself a great backdrop for many a film and can easily portray as Anywhere, USA,” says Director/ Writer Rick Lord.
Filming locations include Salem, Stayton, Macleay and Canby. “Chryzinium” was written and directed by Rick Lord and produced with brothers, Phillip Wade and Tim Mark Wade. Together, the three have been working Matchlight Films and its sister company, Ambition Pictures, for over a year. While touting Matchlight Films as a ministry films production group, they hope to go full length with family films under the banner of Ambition Pictures. With over 30 volunteers and 73 members, Matchlight Films is growing fast as a filmmaking ministry. However, it’s their latest project, “Chryzinium,” that has become their flagship. BENT “Parties Down South” with CMT The stars of Country Music Television’s (CMT) “Party Down South” recall their best blurry memories of their ultimate party adventures in eight new animated promos from BENT. Directed by Solomon Burbridge the spots intertwine live action interviews with 2D animation to revive wild tales of drunken debauchery. “Just watching the show you know what you’re aiming for - young people who like to party and older people who have stopped partying but can relive their youth through these moments,” says Burbridge. “It harkens back to a time when partying was a badge of honor. It’s like the Olympics of irresponsibility.” The eight promos each feature one cast member recalling a hazy party experience. Their stories float between stealing cop cars, getting kicked out of strip clubs, crawling through mud festivals, riding drunk on horses through Mardi Gras and of course popping a squat while the cops are cheering “Yo! It’s the P-O!” Burbridge, challenged with the prospect of capturing the authenticity of said experiences, needed to find a way to conjure the soul of the show. “We decided the best way to create these Party Down South promos was with something called ‘method animation’,” says Burbridge. “It’s sort of like method
acting except it’s animation. So we were all set to go out for a night of heavy drinking and partying up here in P-town but ultimately, after two microbrews, decided to go home to bed at 10pm.” Burbridge chose a lighter color palette and the 2D “flat” animation technique to create caricatures of each person, with the intention of being true and flattering to the narrators without going over the top. “They still look super attractive,” says Burbridge. “They look like themselves but they are cute little scamp-y versions of themselves.” “I was so impressed by how well Sol and his team were able to put this together,” says BENT Executive Producer Ray Di Carlo. “He has such a knack for this type of storytelling, it really showcases his talents as a director as well as his excellent sense of humor!” CMT released the first promo June 5, 2014 online and the rest over subsequent weeks.
