President’s Letter Dear OMPA Members and Friends, It has been an awesome summer so far, hasn’t it? We kicked off the season with the expansion of OPIF and inclusion of Post Production, Gaming, Visual FX and other disciplines into iOPIF, thanks to the OMPA Government Affairs Committee, everyone involved in the most impressive lobbying effort the state capitol has ever seen, and (of course) the State Legislature and the Governor himself! Next was the OMPA Classic, which (despite some logistical snafus) was a huge success, both from the fun factor and the fund factor. The OMPA Media Arts Education Scholarship fund is nearly double in size as a result, at $5,000. Thanks, again, to the Golf Committee, the army of volunteers (I wish I had space to thank you all by name), and mostly the participants in the golf and croquet tournaments and our very generous sponsors, all found by clicking here. Please avail yourself of their goods and services. Tell them I sent you! The day after the Classic, I participated in an historic meeting with principal industry representatives from around the state, including folks from MOPAN (Mid-Oregon Production Arts Network), SOFaT (Southern Oregon Film and Television), a new group of seasoned professionals forming in the Bend area, and a few of us from the Portland area. I believe we are many steps closer to unifying our efforts to truly represent Oregon as a whole, giving us more lobbying strength and providing greater ability to grow business and jobs in our sectors of the economy. Thanks so much to everyone involved in the summit; I am looking forward to us translating our talk into action! Most recently, I had the great fortune to attend an event at the Hollywood Bowl organized by Vince Porter and the Oregon Film Office crew. At the “Oregon Picnic,” scheduled around the appearance of Oregon’s own phenoms “Pink Martini,” our clients (and potential clients) enjoyed an incredible array of Oregon food products at a prime location in the Museum Garden of the Bowl itself. Most importantly, our guests got a glimpse of Oregon’s great vibe and were able to get face-to-face with Vince to learn firsthand about the state incentive programs, Oregon’s crew depth, and how supportive the Governor’s office is of our industry. The concert was not too shabby either! I hope we can do another event like this soon and get more of our membership involved. My wish for all of you is to have a fun and busy rest-of-the summer! But don’t forget the “rest” part … it is going to be a busy fall! My best, Michael Bard OMPA Board President Head Funkologist, StudioBard LLC

Warren Pereira Releases Teaser Video for Upcoming Documentary on Indian Tigers As part of his research, preparation and location scouting for an upcoming documentary feature on tigers, OMPA Member Warren Pereira of W Films went to Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve on Jan 24-27th, 2012. Pereira had no crew, just himself in a jeep, with a hand-held 5D MK II and available light. Pereira’s diary-like edit of about 12 hours of footage, which can be seen by clicking the still image to the right, does not necessarily represent the upcoming documentary but rather represents Pereira’s research in preparation for it. If you have a serious interest in knowing more about this upcoming project and the investment offering behind it, you can contact Pereira at warren@wfilms. com.

Digital One Puts the Right Edge on Mutt Industries’ Gerber Spot Wins 2013 Communicator Award Digital One has earned an Award Of Excellence in the category of Video & Commercial: Sound Design. Mutt Industries tapped Digital One for the Gerber Knives project, “The Instant.” Sound designer Chip Sloan worked closely with art director / editor Adam Long, writer Mike Houston, creative directors Scott Cromer, Steve Luker, Mike McCommon and producer Chris Lawson. The goal of the audio was to create not just footsteps, but the ominous feeling that Trouble is a living thing – a thing that stalks us – and that part of preparing for Trouble is having the proper weapon to drive it away. Throughout the spot, Trouble is heard just a split second before it arrives, maintaining a

feeling of adrenalized anxiety throughout. No strangers to the great Northwestern outdoors themselves, Sloan and Houston left the studio to do foley work for the spot. The project was also lent a gritty, folksy vibe with the accompaniment of an original song by Charlie Campbell. Adam Long sewed the whole thing together to effectively capture the instants in which Trouble arrives, and the essence of the people who stand nose to nose with it.

New Film Festival Debuts in Portland this Month In the spirit of imagination, possibility, celebration and love of film, the inaugural Portland Film Festival will take place Aug 27 – Sept 1, 2013. With a combination of indoor and outdoor screenings, the festival will feature the largest free outdoor screenings in the history of the city. Portland Film Festival is the brainchild of local filmmaker Joshua Leake who spent the last year traveling to film festivals around the world after his documentary, “Emptys,” won the world’s largest short film festival, Tropfest. “The Portland Film Festival is about bringing the community together to celebrate filmmakers from around the world and the power of a good story,” said Joshua Leake, director of the Portland Film Festival. “With room for 1,400 attendees, the outdoor film festival screenings will be the largest in Portland’s history. And, the outdoor screenings are free. My love of film combined with a desire to create a film
festival experience that was truly accessible to everyone is what motivated me to create this festival.” A partnership with the City of Portland and the Portland Parks Bureau allows for three nights of screenings under the stars at the city’s new Fields Park located in the Pearl District on NW 11th and Overton Aug. 30 – Sept. 1. Along with a line-up of great films, the outdoor screenings will feature a beer garden, food carts, live music, and good company. Indoor screens are being planned at theaters throughout the city Aug. 27 – Sept 1. Additional details will be available in the coming weeks. Portland resident and seasoned TV/Film producer and director, Jay Cornelius, is in charge of festival programming. With more than 15 years experience in the industry, he has shot and edited shows for National Geographic, The History Channel, A&E, PBS, HGTV, Discovery-Times Channel and the Outdoor Life Network.

Bent’s Fingers Fight Back Against Bullying Bent Image Lab has joined forces with Secret deodorant and Leo Burnett to add another installment to their “Mean Stinks” campaign. Directed by Solomon Burbridge, the public service announcements incorporate the “paint your pinky blue” slogan in skits that use real fingers to tell their stories. “It’s the cutest call to action I’ve ever seen in my life,” says Burbridge. “What an easy and great way to show that you’re against bullying.” The campaign introduces three new PSAs that feature finger “actors” dressed in teen apparel and composited into practical sets. The skits demonstrate how to counteract a bully’s agenda as well as highlighting situations that may not be perceived as “drama” but actually are. The plan is to release the spots online and encourage others to watch and create their own skits using finger puppets. “These spots are somewhat edgy but
at the same time heartfelt and meaningful,” says Burbridge. Burbidge and the team from Leo Burnett brought in teen girls to record dialogue and perform “hand acting.” The girls’ hands were “dressed” by Bent Art Director Greg Arden with tiny “outfits” such as jean skirts, dresses and necklaces. In one scene a finger puppet even wears a raspberry as a cap. The fingers were then fitted with wigs and painted-on eyes, some even adorned with google eyes. Their eyebrows and mouths were created in 2D and then applied in compositing to the fingers to complete their faces. “We were excited to work with Secret and Leo Burnett on these PSAs,” says Bent Executive Producer Ray Di Carlo. “This is the kind of project you are always looking for as an animation company. The creative was exceptional, fun and engaging, featuring fingers as actors while also conveying a powerful message.”

Screenworks Ink Offers Script Coverage Special For August For the month of August, Steve Coker of Screenworks Ink will provide script coverage services for $175. (Regular cost is $200-$250.) Script Coverage is a detailed breakdown of the overall effectiveness and impact of your screenplay. Screenworks Ink will read your screenplay and evaluate each of the following attributes: Mechanics/Elements of the Script Is your script written in the proper format and current screenplay language. Is it the appropriate length for its genre. If your script isn’t professionally formatted or is too short or too long, the chances it will be taken seriously and read from cover to cover decreased drastically. Professionalism There are at least 50 major things new and beginning screenwriters do that give them away as beginners. We will look for those issues, make note of them then help you to avoid making those mistakes in the future.
Structure Does your script follow the basic 3-Act structure or is it more of a 15 beat or Heroes Journey structural feel?? Are their significant beats missing or miswritten? Plot Is your story interesting? Will someone want to read past page 10? And more importantly is there a movie in that script? Characters Are your characters three-dimensional, have a unique voice and make decisions based on fact and not for convenience. Dialogue Is it realistic or on-the-nose. Do each of your characters have their own distinctive way of talking and interacting? Are there actual stakes involved for your characters? The World Are the setting and locations of your story appropriate for the type of film you are making. Do they stand out in the readers mind without becoming too overly explained or too simply stated? Contact Steve Coker at 503-888-5141 for more info.
