Director’s Letter Dear Industry Member,

An Oregonian article last month suggests that growing Oregon’s film inventive would increase the economic impact of film and TV production in Oregon “only so long as the local industry had the capacity to meet the additional demand.” (Don’t worry, we set the author straight on that.) Each of us in OMPA membership has an answer about economic activity that includes ourselves, the people who work for us, the companies we pay our bills to, the folks we work with to buy and improve our gear, our buildings, our houses, and the entities that take taxes and other fees out of our paychecks. The Oregon legislature has put their confidence in this industry to grow more jobs. Are we up to the task? (A little louder, I can almost hear you…) This month we take two great steps for OMPA: 1) We hold the biggest, baddest, bluesy-est OMPA Classic ever on Friday July 12 Being there to celebrate with industry members will be its own reward. But if that’s not enough, the hosted beer and wine (courtesy of Red Thread Entertainment and New Belgium), food (thanks to all our sponsors), Curtis Salgado concert (thanks to Pacific Office Automation) and manicured croquet, putt-putt and golf greens should do the trick! The awards party is open to all with a suggested donation of $25 to the scholarship fund, and pre-registration is not required. Tournament play (golf or croquet) is limited however and does require pre-registration. Do so online at www.ompa.org/RSVP. 2) OMPA continues the process of developing chapters around Oregon To better represent all corners (elevations, latitudes and looks) of our state, we are soliciting help from people and organizations who have already been working on behalf of our professional industry to hold local events and do legislative organizing. It’s the right thing for our state-wide organization to do. Thank you for bearing through the changes. Our work together is paying off! Sincerely,

Tom McFadden Executive Director Oregon Media Production Association

Portland Community Media Seeks Board Members Portland Community Media has three openings on its Board of Directors and is seeking applicants to fill the positions who have a passion for public media and experience serving on boards.

OPIF Tax Credit Auction To Take Place July 8 - 17

The Oregon Department of Revenue in conjunction with the Oregon Film & Video Office will be auctioning off $6million worth of tax credit certificates beginning July 8. Proceeds from this auction will benefit the Oregon Production Investment Fund. This fund is an important tool in recruiting film and television production to Oregon. The auction will conclude on July 17. All bids will not be considered final until bankable funds have been received by the Oregon Department of Revenue. The funds must be received by July 24. Early in June we will be sending another email with more detailed information on the auction but the process will be much in line with last year’s successful auction. The auction will allow tax payers to bid in $500 increments. The minimum bid per increment will be $475. Last year all $6million of Tax Credits were sold out.

The average bid was $489.65. By law the legislature may elect to directly appropriate funds to the Oregon Production Investment Fund if it does so 30 days before the beginning of the fiscal year (July 1, 2013). If this was to happen, the auction will not move forward. Currently we have no indication that the legislature will do this. Currently under review in the legislature is HB 2267 which was proposed by Governor Kitzhaber. It calls for an increase in the program to $12million a year. If this bill was to pass through the House and Senate and assuming the Governor would sign the bill, an auction for the additional $6million would be carried out in October or November. Please feel free to call Vince Porter or Nathan Cherrington with any questions (503) 229-5832.

The Festival continues the Film Center’s 40-year tradition of spotlighting Northwest artists and their work, bringing them together to share ideas and inspiration, and finding both critical acclaim and appreciative audiences for outstanding regional work. Festival entries are judged by a prominent filmmaker, curator, or critic who selects the cream of the crop for honors. Past judges include Gus Van Sant, Matt Groening, Todd Haynes, Christine Vachon, and Sundance and Outfest programmer John Cooper. Generally, 30-45 shorts, features, and documentaries are screened

Permanent residents of Alaska, British Columbia, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington may submit two works of any length or genre released since August 1, 2011, and not previously entered in the Festival. Student entries (college and university only) must be from a school located in the Northwest. There is no entry fee, and entries must be postmarked by Monday, August 1, 2013. Submissions are automatically considered for the Northwest Film Center’s year-round Northwest Tracking series and the annual Portland International Film Festival. All Northwest filmmakers—whether their work is selected or not—are encouraged to participate in the Festival at its free Filmmakers’ Un-Conference or social events including the Opening Night Party and each will be offered two free tickets to a Festival screenings just for entering their work. Pander Brothers Finance New Short Film through Kickstarter Crowdfunding From award winning filmmakers, the Pander Brothers, comes a brand new short film, “Subtext,” which explores modern relationships in the era of text messaging. Funding for the project was raised through Kickstarter. The Pander Bros. are excited to work in this new fundraising format, giving them a chance to work with longtime community friends and supporters. “We are excited to be up and running on a personal vision that is mostly financed by Portlanders who are supporting the arts and film community through crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter. It’s a great way for people to support projects on their own terms,” says Jacob Pander. The Dandy Warhol’s frontman, Courtney Taylor-Taylor, is Executive Producing “Subtext,” which begins shooting in July. Taylor-Taylor supplied the song “And Then I Dreamt of Yes” for the Pander Brothers’ celebrated 2010 debut feature film, SELFLESS. Since then, the brothers have spent time between Portland and Los Angeles directing commercials for brands like Panasonic, LG and adidas Originals while developing a handful of their graphic novels as crossmedia with video and music, including the web series “Tasty Bullet Exposed,” based on their Energy Drink conspiracy graphic novel Tasty Bullet, co-authored by Jonathan

Vankin for Image Comics The Pander Bros. are well known for their work in graphic novels. They recently launched a new website offering their various creator-owned comics digitally. The Brothers share their love of the graphic storytelling medium with rocker TaylorTaylor who recently released his first graphic novel, One Model Nation on Titan Books. “It’s great to have someone we have known for so long and watched succeed in both his craft and career, support this vision,” says Arnold Pander of TaylorTaylor’s Executive Producer status. “We are thankful to have friends and supporters in our own community get behind a passion project like ‘Subtext.’”

Hollywood Theatre Ready To Make Digital Conversion Portland’s historic Hollywood Theatre is now set to enter the next generation in cinema. Thanks to grants from several area foundations and funding generated by the theatre and its board, the Hollywood has raised $161,650 to convert to industrycompliant HD Digital Cinema Projection systems. It’s perhaps the biggest change in the movie industry since the transition from silent films to talkies. The theatre will convert all three of its auditoriums to the new industry standard digital format in the next couple months. The conversion to digital projection will allow the Hollywood to keep its doors open and continue to offer its unique range of high quality programming. HD digital content is expanding quickly and, as additional content becomes available, the theatre will be able to offer many new artistic and cultural programs to the

Hollywood Theater interior

community. The film-to-digital backstory is that in 2005 six major movie studios decided to move from 35mm film to digital projection. That decision is now having tremendous repercussions. This year, for the first time in history, digital will become prevalent and celluloid will become a vision of the past. Sadly, many small, independent theatres across the country will go silent and shut their doors, unable to afford the mandatory digital conversion. Fortunately, film lovers will not be left in the dark in Portland. The Hollywood plans to keep its 35mm film projection in two auditoriums, add a new 16mm projector in one auditorium, and upgrade projectors in the main auditorium to screen 70mm prints. A special 70mm film series will roll out this fall and hopefully reel in new theatre members and film fans!

The Haunting of Sunshine Girl Featured in Seventeen Magazine and YouTube’s “On The Rise” Sunshine Girl’s fun and scary homegrown paranormal mystery web series caught the attention of both YouTube and Seventeen Magazine last month. Sunshine Girl, the star behind “The Haunting of Sunshine Girl,” will be featured in an upcoming issue of Seventeen Magazine as part of the magazines annual Pretty Amazing contest in which they pick five teen girls who have “pretty amazing” stories to compete for a $10,000 scholarship and to be on the cover of the magazine. YouTube will also be featuring Sunshine’s channel on their spotlight network, as part of YouTube’s On The Rise program. Entertainment experts are touting new media like YouTube as the future of entertainment more and more. The editors at Seventeen Magazine would seem to agree. Whether it was for her uncanny ability to gain an audience and

loyal following for her home-made web series or her “adorkable” ability to stand out from the crowd in doing so, Seventeen Magazine hand picked Sunshine, recognizing the impact this teenager will have on the future of entertainment. With the selection by Seventeen Magazine, one of Sunshine’s longest standing mysteries has been solved; the truth behind Sunshine’s real name has been revealed as Paige Mckenzie. In a serendipitous coincidence of timing, within a week of being selected by Seventeen Magazine, YouTube chose The Haunting of Sunshine Girl as the channel to promote for their On The Rise program. This internal program identifies channels YouTube feels offer something special and unique and deserve more views and exposure. As a result, Sunshine is currently being promoted across YouTube as a channel they feel their subscribers should visit.

On July 19, Opera Theater Oregon (OTO) will begin a production that will jettison opera even further from the concert hall. OTO is taking ‘The Cunning Little Vixen,’ Leoš Janáček’s wildly passionate fable celebrating nature’s cycles of birth, love, death, and renewal--told through the eyes of both humans and animals--to nature itself, by presenting it inside a barn at Sauvie Island’s Wild Goose Farm. “I couldn’t think of a better setting for an immersive theatrical experience in the midst of nature. There might even be some

real chickens wandering around during the show,” says OTO artistic director Erica Melton. The cast is made up of 29 local singers and dancers ranging from age 7 to 57. OTO, devoted to “Making Opera Safe for America,” has been taking opera out of traditional concert halls since 2005, presenting in cozy, hip venues like the Someday Lounge and Mission Theater, where audience members can chase their opera with a cocktail and a meal, cheer for the hero and hiss for the villain.
