Introducing... Dan Ackerman OMPA member Dan Ackerman is a Director/DP who has been lighting and shooting all manner of subjects for over 30 years. His specialty is stop-motion animation and time lapse photography with emphasis on product lighting.
in media. Maybe as kindred spirits and partially due to help and resources I can offer when needed. There has been such a variety of demands upon the space and equipment and I have always gone the extra distance to supply the solutions.
What is your background? I’m a native Oregonian from Hood River, raised on a fruit orchard, weaned on hard work, diesel fuel & tractor exhaust. What couldn’t be bought had to be built. Loved drawing as the ultimate escape through imagination. Then I discovered cameras and started making time-lapse films with a Super 8. Heard about Cal Arts and brother, I was gone to LA. Came back 8 years later. Portland has been home ever since, and I don’t regret it.
What are some of your greatest challenges in your business? Keeping busy after New Year’s. Post holiday slump affects us all - course starting a business the year the great recession started has been challenging altogether!
How did you get started in the industry? My first BBQ was a long-form music video for Supertramp as Technical Director of Visual Effects. Super-Nightmare - but what an experience! Worked in animation in LA doing Oxberry animation, optical printing and stop-motion lighting. When I moved back to Portland I started working freelance for Vinton Studios, Blashfield & Associates, Ray DiCarlo and a host of other independents. I always kept a studio or workshop. I shared space with the late Tom Arndt, Andy Collen and Michael Koerner. I can’t really say I got my “start” any one place nor by doing any one thing as no two jobs have been alike, but, I can say I have never given up and have always been inventive. What is unusual or unique about your business? Since I started Stage-13 in 2008 I have found a niche in helping smaller shoots, composite shoots (i.e.: greenscreen), independent filmmakers and experimenters
What are you most proud of? My daughter What’s your superpower? Optimism Anything else you’d like to share? My contact info:. Dan Ackerman, Ackerman Films / Stage13 13 NW 13th Ave, Portland, OR 97209 503-504-4499 www.stage13.net

Why list in Oregon’s media production directory? What is this directory? SourceOregon is the state of Oregon’s professional directory for commercial, film, television, internet and video game production. It is printed each year and published online at: www.SourceOreogn.com Who uses it?
The directory is endorsed and used by our top producers and production companies from in-state and out of state, like @ Large Films, Wieden and Kennedy, Broadway Video, Electric Entertainment, Kamp Grizzly, Picture This Production Services and many, many more. Producers, line producers, coordinators and department heads consider it a crucial tool for doing business and every year they demand a current and comprehensive directory of Oregon professionals.
Where am I exposed?
The directory is marketed in-state and out of state to advertising agencies, commercial clients, film, television and multimedia producers both in print and online. If you have time for more work, listing in the directory increases your exposure to jobs.
I am too busy already.
If you are so busy you can’t possibly entertain another job, your current producer or coordinator will still want to see your name in the book so they can find you. Believe us, they care. We know because they tell us. Plus it is unfair to our promotion of Oregon’s industry when we leave our top people out of the book and we won’t be able to continue to draw larger numbers of projects to Oregon if producers don’t have faith in the depth of our crew and resources.
What makes this directory different from other places I am listed?
Unlike other production directories (or Craigslist, or Facebook) the SourceOregon directory is vetted, so that only qualified professionals are listed. This makes a big difference to producers who are looking to crew up.
How much does it cost?
OMPA members get a $100 credit to buy their first extended listing, plus a logo or online reel for free with their membership. Otherwise, listings start at $35.
Can you do this for me over the phone?
Sure. We charge an additional $25 per listing to type up a listing for you, but if you are simply renewing last year’s listing we can do that just by taking your credit card information over the phone. Our telemarketer Melanie Rose is in the office Tuesday-Friday, 10am-2pm.
Do I get an OMPA member discount?
Yes, if your dues are current though the end of this year, you get $100 credit to buy your first listing, plus an online logo or reel link.
Can I buy a display ad as well?
Yes. We have display ads online that start at $450, black and white print ads that start at $300, and full page color ads that start at $1,600. All ad purchases get free listings, so we should do your advertising order before you order or renew your listing. Click here for a media kit with rates.
I don’t want to do it this year.
That’s too bad. Unless you’ve quit working we’d like consider you an active part of Oregon’s production industry.

The Northwest Film Center presents The 40th Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival November 8-16, 2013 at Whitsell Auditorium & McMenamins Mission Theatre Click here for Advanced Tickets The Northwest Film Center is proud to announce the line-up for its 40th annual survey of new work by regional media artists, the Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival (formerly the Northwest Film & Video Festival), which takes place November 8-16, 2013. This year’s Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival presents 40+ short and feature films from filmmakers across the Northwest, selected by guest Festival judge Mike Plante, the senior shorts programmer for the Sundance Film Festival. Festival film highlights include Megan Griffiths’ (THE OFF HOURS) latest film EDEN, starring Beau Bridges and Jamie Chung; Jon Garcia’s sequel to his much talked about 2012 film THE FALLS; Nicole Teeny’s engaging, characterdriven documentary BIBLE QUIZ; Zach Weintraub’s (THE INTERNATIONAL SIGN FOR CHOKING) minimalist exploration of a relationship in flux, YOU MAKE ME FEEL SO YOUNG; and Alex Stonehill’s haunting documentary expose of xenophobia in a time of terror, BARZAN. Also programmed into the Festival is HAWAIIAN PUNCH, a
new feature by Nandan Rao (THE MEN OF DODGE CITY), and MMXIII by Ian Clark (SEARCHING FOR YELLOW); both directors have been named one of Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Cinema in the past two years. In addition to features, the Festival offers three programs of short films. Shorts I— a collection of films from Portland, OR, Tigard, OR, Seattle, WA, Walla Walla, WA, Olympia, WA, Belgrade, MT, and Vancouver, BC—will kick off the Festival on Opening Night at 7 p.m. with filmmakers in attendance. Shorts II and Shorts III are collections of films by makers throughout the NW region, ranging from the experimental to animation to narrative and non-fiction. All three shorts programs will screen numerous times during the Festival. Beyond the numerous screenings on offer, the Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival also provides opportunities for aspiring and working filmmakers to interact directly with peers and industry professionals through events such as the Northwest Filmmakers’ Un-Conference and the “Defining Yourself as a Filmmaker” panel. Filmmakers whose work did not make it into the Festival have been invited to submit their short film into the popular program, “What’s Wrong with this Picture?,” hosted by Seattle curator Warren Etheredge for a program illuminating the pitfalls of selling your film to a programmer in 2 minutes or less. Click here to visit The 40th Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival microsite, where you can access film descriptions, ticketing links and more.

Join us as Warren Etheredge (Seattle educator and host of “The High Bar”) talks with two
Northwest filmmakers who have successfully transitioned from small indie projects to mainstream industry status: Seattle’s Megan Griffiths and Portland’s David Cress, who founded Food Chain Films and has since produced critically acclaimed music videos, ads, feature films, and television, including Gus Van Sant’s Paranoid Park and IFC’s Portlandia. Sat, Nov 16, 2:45pm - Panel: Defining Yourself as a Filmmaker Whitsell Auditorium, Portland Art Museum (1219 SW Park Ave) How do you make the transition from budding filmmaker to committed professional? How do you navigate the uncertainties of funding and distribution when your track record is short? How do you know if your work will still be considered “fresh” to the field as you move further along on your path? And where are these paths anyway? Join filmmakers Nandan Rao ($500 of Party, Hawaiian Punch), Stephanie Hough (Heart), and Gabe Van Lelyveld (Mandarose)—all of whom are in their twenties and have a film in this year’s Festival—for a discussion about taking your future into your own hands as they define “fresh” in their own terms. Haunted Ghost Mine Helps Raise Money for Cancer Patients and Families As submitted by Stacie Overman As president of Take2 Talent Agency, I appreciate the value of bringing all you have to give when immersing yourself in your craft. All you have to give means bringing personal experiences, skill level, acting techniques, and drawing on personal triumphs and tragedies to get in the moment and bring authenticity to a role. My own personal life experiences offer a mirror of what I am talking about. After losing my husband to cancer and surviving breast cancer, I met and married Larry, who just happens, by the way, to own a haunted gold mine. When Hollywood saw this as a reality TV opportunity, we became stars of the paranormal reality TV show Ghost Mine, now in its second season on the SyFy channel (Wednesday nights). The personal triumph in this story is what we did next. Both of us are committed to giving back to the community. Since our Crescent Mine had developed its own identity as Ghost-Gold-Mine, we made a personal, value-based decision. We began having charity events at the Mine to raise
awareness for cancer and benefit children and families suffering from cancer’s effects and treatments. We hope to help by using our own personal celebrity, the notoriety of the Crescent Mine, and the media attention that is coming our way to assist those diagnosed, affected by and stricken by cancer. In this way, we bring all of who we are—our values and desire to give back to the community. One event at a time, one tee shirt sale at a time, one smile at a time, so that tired and afraid parents will find some relief with the money we raise. Bring all of who you are to the audition. And, watch what magic you can make happen. Stacie Overman, owner and president of Take 2 Talent agency is looking for talent of all ages that would like to be a part of Take 2 and learn how to bring all you have. Click here to visit the website. Submit your request for consideration to info@take2pro.com. Click here to visit Larry and Stacie’s personal website for other ways to make a difference.
