Boxing Day Benefit for Rose Haven featuring the Reverb Brothers

The Reverb Brothers and the Liquor Store (‘not a real liquor store’) are pleased to announce the fourth annual Boxing Day Benefit for Rose Haven, a Portland center serving women and children who have experienced abuse, homelessness and other disruptive life challenges. We are seeking donations of gently used women's warm clothing, such as coats, hats, sweaters, new underwear and new socks. Desperately needed items include rain gear, backpacks, warm children’s clothing, blankets and new personal care items. We also gratefully accept cash and check donations. Last year we collected coats, gloves, warm hats, scarves and blankets. In addition we collected 612 diapers, 1200 baby wipes, 644 feminine hygiene products and $375 in cash donations. We hope to double those items this year. In days of yore, Boxing Day found the poorest of England’s classes gifted by the upper crust. Whatever crust you may be, we are inviting Portland to help out Rose Haven after the excesses of the Holiday have subsided and enjoy the good time music of the Reverb Brothers.

Rose Haven was designed to help the women of Old Town with what they most needed. Initiated by Catholic Charities in 1997, it became an independent non-profit organization in 2007, relocating to NW Portland, to provide direct services to homeless and abused women and children. They have welcomed women off the street and, with deep respect, addressed each one's needs by offering life-sustaining services. The staff and volunteers are passionate about the empowerment of the women they serve. Rose Haven has received awards from regional church and service organizations for its service to women and children in Portland. The Reverb Brothers bring on one of the widest and wildest musical repertoires in Portland, from the 1700s to 2016, songs that encompass Blues, Folk, Old-Timey, Rockabilly, Soul and Dixieland. Cascade Blues Association notes; “The Reverbs dig deep to find the original versions of many of the blues, rags, hokum, and standards they want to play…” The band may play Papa Oom Mow Mow, Witchi Tai To, Claudette, and Columbia Stockade Blues in the same set.” The band tops it off with a dozen original songs recorded for a new CD to be released next year.

New Portland Short Film “End the Cycle” Tackles the Issue of Maternal Filicide More than 200 women kill their children in America each year, only one of these women admits that she would do it again. This topic is explored in the new short by Werbucks Entertainment. Today Werbucks Entertainment announced END THE CYCLE, a SAG-AFTRA short film on the topic of maternal filicide. The film was written and produced by Tiffani Barbour and Stephanie St. James-Werba, two women of color. The filmmakers seek to bring more diversity to Portland’s film industry. Less than 75 years ago, the State of Oregon was segregated, and racial tensions still remain. However, this now flourishing community is now welcoming and encour-aging female minority filmmakers. “When creating the concept for this film, we did so with hopes to become part of a critical voice that is shedding light on the dark subject matter of child abuse and the U.S. foster care system” says St. James-Werba and Barbour. END THE CYCLE follows the story of Denise, a complex, struggling mother of three who takes the law into her own hands, when she discovers the horrifying truths about her children. While awaiting her fate, an unlikely and hesitant ally emerges in Andrea, a corrections officer suffering losses of her own. As they try to manipulate a broken system, lies intertwine with hope, and tragedy brings prom-ise. No one’s life will ever be the same after learning of the events that take place. This new short film is directed by popular award winning Portland Director Scott Ballard (DEATH ON A ROCK, A STANDING STILL). END THE CYCLE captures both the beauty and ugliness of a world not regularly seen in today’s cinema. Powerhouse actors Wendy Allegaert and Sharae Foxie star as the prisoner and corrections officer. They are two strong female characters bound together by cir-cumstance. Stu James, a LA-based leading man, has been cast as the character David, a husband looking to salvage his failing marriage. Award winning Portland actors Rachael Parrell Fosket and Vin Shambry play the supporting roles of Kim and Eric, a couple that portrays the voice of reason. Jana Lee Hamblin, a promi-nent figure in the local Portland entertainment scene and owner/founder of Act Now Portland, lends her talents as the Judge. The films proof of concept trailer was shot in November 2016, and the team is ex-cited to resume filming again in April following the release of its crowdfunding campaign on January 9th, 2017. The city of Portland plays a key role with its many available locations, most sought after actors, filmmakers and crew.

“end the cycle” interview

with stephanie st. james-werba

What is your background and how did you begin filmmaking? I have a background in professional theater as an actress for over 30 years. After touring the United States and overseas with Broadway touring companies for close to 20 years, I found myself wanting to be able to tell stories through film and theater as a writer/producer. My husband and I have been developing a children’s musical animated cartoon series and live stage show for two years together with Tiffani Barbour as a co-writer on the project entitled Ziggy Francis and her Amazing Adventures™. Our Ziggy project has been the inspiration for the many projects we have begun to develop and has propelled us into the world of filmmaking. How and why did you get involved in this project? End the Cycle was a moment of inspiration that hit me while traveling. After working in a group home for boys at the age of 19 years old, before I moved to NYC to purse an acting career, I knew that someday I wanted to make a positive impact on the lives of children. I did not know then my contributions would be through creating art. I shared the concept for the film with my writing partner Tiffani Barbour, and together we molded and shaped the film’s storyline and characters. Our original intention was also to create a vehicle for ourselves as actors, considering the lack of opportunities available to people of diverse ethnic backgrounds in the film world and in Portland. However, the project took on a life of it’s own, and we quickly removed ourselves as actors, so that we could focus strictly on writing and producing with hopes that the films success will open more doors for diverse actors in the Portland Film Community.

“end the cycle” interview

with stephanie st. james-werba

What have been your biggest challenges? To be quite honest, our biggest challenge, as for most artists, has been raising enough funding for the budget of the film. This is why we decided to create a proof of concept for the project that we could share with friends, family and our community with a crowd sourcing campaign. With the campaign we hope to gain enough momentum financially to finish raising the funding needed to complete filming in April of 2017. What was your favorite moment of this project so far? Definitely seeing the story come to life on set, when filming our proof of concept, was a highlight for our entire team. However, with that said, for me personally, the audition process was by far one of my favorite moments. Having the opportunity to meet the incredibly diverse and talented pool of actors on the Portland acting scene, and being exposed to their work has been something I will cherish for my lifetime. Has anything surprised you since the inception of this film? I think I was most surprised by how quickly people rallied to help support us through the casting process. The community really has been so very supportive in helping get this film made. Everyone from established casting directors, to fellow actors, directors and producers, have all reached out and offered us their assistance. That has been pretty inspiring and for that we are truly grateful. What is next for this project and yourself? The launching of our crowd funding campaign on January 9th, 2017. Once our budget goals have been met, then filming will resume in April 2017. We plan to submit this film to festivals, and hope to shed light on the dark subject matter of child abuse. What’s next for me personally, and my entire team, is to continue developing our animated musical cartoon series and live stage show project, Ziggy Francis and Her Amazing Adventures™, as well as to continue working on the three additional projects we have in development. We currently have a feature film we are writing in which we are researching in South America with plans to film overseas in the Patagonia of Argentina as a Spanish Language Film with English subtitles, as well as a comedy television series and an old Hollywood style musical song and dance project, both to be filmed in Portland, Oregon. Do you have any parting words of advice for individuals considering a career in filmmaking? In the words of Paulo Coelho from the book The Alchemist, “When you want something, All the Universe Conspires in helping you to achieve it.” --

Fast Turtle Productions & Mentorship Programs for Women by Darcy Miller and Christine Autrand Mitchell

Fast Turtle is a production house established by Darcy Miller and Christine Autrand Mitchell — aimed at broad-spectrum content creation with a focus on infusing women’s perspectives. The numbers are out there and they’re alarming. According to a San Diego State University study, in 2015-16 only 26% of key on set personnel and executives of broadcast networks, cable and streaming channels were women, and only 2% of programs had a woman as Director of Photography. In 2015, female directors comprised a meager 12% of the top 500 grossing films. Yet, women make up 51% of the population, and make purchasing decision an average of 85% of the time. Fast Turtle’s Project 51 is opening the door to more women in film through mentorship, shadowing and internship experiences, as well as crewing up our productions above- and below-the-line to more realistically reflect the world’s population. Project 51 works to ensure that more trained women enter the industries that encompass film, television, streaming, web and gaming. The program accepts applications from any woman interested in a crew position. Chosen applicants are paired with a professional in their field of interest —Director, DP, Producer, Art Director. They attend one pre-production meeting, one full shoot day, and one post-production meeting, if applicable. They are also given a substantial amount of one-on-one follow up time with their mentor as well as an internship position on a future Fast Turtle project. From McKenzie Blake, a recent participant in the program: “The Fast Turtle mentorship allowed me to have an exciting behind-the-scenes observation of making a short film. It was an inspiring experience because I could really get the works of what making and planning a film is like. It allowed me to get a lot more specific information on cinematography that I wouldn't have had access to.” Project 51 offers a track to prepare more women to take on professional positions. Fast Turtle believes that leading by example is one of the best ways to have the female voice more represented in film. More and more filmmakers across the country are creating non-profits, workshops, educational and financial programs to offer increased opportunities for the development of women in film. Director Juliana Lukasik with @Large Films initiated a wonderful program right here in Portland for female filmmakers to shadow commercial directors on set. We Do It Together (WDIT), led by Jessica Chastain and Queen Latifah, was recently created to finance and produce films, documentaries, TV and other forms of media, uniquely dedicated to the empowerment of women. And The 51 Fund is offering an equity investment fund to finance films written, directed and produced by women or those who identify as female. According to WDIT, “When women compete with men on an even playing field, they are as apt to succeed or fail, based upon merit and not perception or prejudice. That is all we are fighting for, no more, no less.” Fast Turtle hopes more filmmakers, men and women, will join them in the pursuit. For more information, visit fastturtleproductions.com.

OHTAC RELEASES WEBSITE AND MOBILE APP ON BARLOW ROAD For the past two years, Dr. Erica Risberg, working with the Oregon Historic Trails Advisory Council (OHTAC), has developed an educational and tourist project about the Barlow Road with funding from the Oregon Community Foundation's Historic Trails Fund. Dr. Erica Risberg, Historian and President of Shared Context Consultants, LLC, headed the project with the assistance of members of the Oregon-California Trails Association and its Northwest Chapter plus members of the OHTAC.

Laurel Shute Hill

The funds were used to develop the website which lists ten sites along the Barlow Road. The website was designed to help educators teach 4th and 5th grade students learn more about the Barlow Road. It has panoramic views of the sites, as well as historical photos when accessible, contextual descriptions of each site, and diary excerpts that were recorded by voiceover talents to engage the students more when learning about each site. Photo from Columbia Gorge Discovery Center

Subsequent funds were used to make some of the material accessible through a mobile application: Next Exit History. The purpose of using the application is to make the material accessible to tourists. They can access the material while they have wifi service, and the information will be downloaded on their mobile device. Once the application has been downloaded, go to "Backpacks" and search for Barlow Road and download it. While traveling along the Barlow Road, there won't be much wifi service, but since the material has been downloaded onto the device, it can be accessed. The downloads are counted, so there is a method of tracking built in that can be used to garner support for future funds from Travel Oregon or other organizations that support cultural heritage tourism. About Erica Risberg and Shared Context Consultants, LLC: Dr. Risberg has over twenty-eight years of experience working in historical research for government agencies and private enterprise. Her experience includes cultural analysis, technical documentation, coordination and management of cross-agency interdisciplinary studies. Her company, Shared Context Consultants, LLC is a women-owned business that specializes in conducting research and working with local museums and agencies to develop methods to engage people with history. She has worked on several research projects with History Associates, Inc. and assisted the Museum of History and Industry (Seattle) and

benefits of gusbandry At her debaucherous 40th birthday party, serial relationship-killer Jackie meets handsome and charming thirty-something River—the perfect guy, who happens to be gay. Their ensuing adventures in self-medication, late-blooming, and questionable judgment lead them to discover a raucous new breed of primary relationship. Over 2015/2016 we wrote and produced a FULL SEASON of The Benefits of Gusbandry - starring Brooke Totman, Kurt Conroyd and the best of Portland’s comedic actors. Over six months and six episodes we garnered much love from our fans in PDX and beyond including positive press from folks like The NY Times and Entertainment Weekly (MUST LIST May 2016), even earning the title “Best Local Web Series” from the readers of Willamette Week. We are proud to be a locally made micro-budget TV show created by a diverse gender balanced Portland based cast and crew. Inspired by powerful relationships with my own “Gusbands” (a.k.a: gay best friends), at its heart The Benefits of Gusbandry is a show about pride, alliance, support and love. We make this show to be a small tool of change and hope in this chaotic world. Our mission is to employ laughter to send messages of freedom and acceptance, and we intend to push things EVEN FURTHER with this next batch of episodes. origin story 9iFX is a Portland based VFX studio founded in 2013 by husband and wife duo Michael and Tracey Miller. Like many company origin stories, 9iFX got its start in the back of a Portland Kitchen. I know, you were thinking garage, or basement, and believe me, that would have been preferable – but the funny thing about opportunity is that you have to be ready to grab it when it comes knocking, or be willing to rearrange your life on the fly in order to make it happen – and that’s what we did … in the kitchen. Founder Michael Miller had been working in the VFX industry for a number of years by then, having worked on feature films and brand ads with many of the local studios and agencies. He was, at that time, in the off season working as Lead Compositor and the vendor’s on-set VFX supervisor for NBC’s Grimm when he teamed up with Jesse Vinton to create the music video “Lucid Dream” for artist PhuturePrimitive. The success of this project set the wheels in motion for us to start thinking about starting our own studio. Then BOOM! An opportunity presented itself when we were offered the chance to manage the VFX for a series of spots in a social media campaign for Puma through local creative agency Juliet Zulu. We found ourselves scrambling to pull the team together. Sleepless weeks later, we delivered the VFX heavy spots and found ourselves needing to pick a name and incorporate really fast. With the seasonality of Michael’s job on Grimm, it just made sense to push the company angle on the down time - which wasn’t hard to do; Once word got out that we were in operation, a myriad of projects started flowing in, ranging from full 3D animation, to motion graphics, to fantastical matte paintings to “fix-it-in-post” work. Michael left Grimm after 4 seasons, ready to pursue 9iFX full time.

25

Fast-forward almost 3 years, and that initial scramble has turned into a fully functioning VFX studio. 9iFX graduated from the kitchen rather quickly (preparing and eating dinner with a kitchen full of freelancers makes for an awkward meal) and moved to the up and coming SE industrial district, along with Jesse Vinton and his production company Vinton Depiction. One of the most exciting aspects of the industry for us is the range and types of projects we get to be involved in. To date, we’ve done Broadcast and online promo spots for big names like ESPN, Adidas, Keen, Nike, and of course, Puma. We’ve worked with quite a few of Portland’s creative agencies as well, including Mutt Industries, Anderson3, Cinco Design, Juliet Zulu and DHX Advertising to name a few. We’ve also reached into the film/tv industry, working on SyFy channel originals and other programs for The Discovery Channel. Each project has been totally unique – from building an entire 3D stadium and then knocking it down, to running some wicked fluid simulations, to designing fully immersive 3D projection mapped experiences; The Portland creative community likes to keep us on our toes with their requests. We are always experimenting with new technology and are excited to now be jumping into the VR bandwagon after being tapped again by Juliet Zulu to create a two and a

half minute 3D animated VR experience for the launch of Puma’s evoTOUCH line. The spot, which was finished this summer, features a fully immersive 360º environment showcasing swirling nebulas, orbiting planets, and flying shoes. It’s a “tools-required” spot – we recommend you check it out in a VR rig, or at the very least with a Google Cardboard headset. So what’s the future like? Portland is going through a creative and tech renaissance at the moment, and there is so much opportunity to create greatness, right here at home. We’re stoked to see what YOU, the Oregon Media and Production community have in the works – and who knows, perhaps we’ll find ways to collaborate in the future. From animations for tech start up explainer videos to kindling a holographic romance in a post-apocalyptic earth; we love rolling up our sleeves and diving in headfirst. This is only the beginning.
