Dear

Director’s Letter

OMPA members,

We have been keeping you busy these past few months. In August you were asked to help us define the best listing categories for Oregon Media Production Association’s annual publication, SourceOregon; our statewide directory that includes lists of vetted crew members from pre to post production. In September we invited you to review these refined categories and now this month, October, we are asking you to renew your listings, before November 30th, for inclusion in the printed version of SourceOregon2017. (If you are just catching up with your CallSheets, the new listings categories are included at the end of this edition) Why are we being so demanding? Because we care about you. We know that having you included in the SourceOregon directory accomplishes several things. 1. Your listing is public acknowledgement of your skills and willingness to work in your field of experience 2. Your listing aligns your name with supporting the whole eco-system of the industry which showcases Oregon as a leading contender 3. Your listing promotes the industry to outside producers who are seeking top-notch teams which saves them time and money Do you feel that you don’t need OMPA? Some objections we have heard are; you are already working and you don’t need to be a member of OMPA nor be a lister. I respect for your viewpoint, however, it is my job to offer another lens with which to consider. OMPA’s mission to champion for the whole industry will not falter. Your membership eases the financial burden on our staff of 2 to enable us to focus on the achieving the pillars of our mission to benefit everyone. Membership in OMPA is akin to membership in OPB. Will OMPA continue to publish SourceOregon for statewide promotion of our industry? Yes. Will OMPA continue to advocate for film-friendly policies in cities across the state? Yes. Will OMPA continue to advocate for increasing film incentives to bring more opportunities which will benefit members and non-members? Yes. Will OMPA continue to promote only the work of our members? Yes. Why will OMPA only promote members’ work? OMPA’s tangible way of thanking members for investing in our industry is to highlight the excellent work of our members through weekly email blasts, on social media and in every CallSheet. So, if you are an OMPA member, we thank you . If you are a lister only, please consider joining OMPA and receive a free listing, with a value up to $120. If you are neither, please thank an OMPA member today. OMPA members are investing in your industry. Thank you OMPA members for equipping our office with the means to achieve excellence for you!

Membership matters,

Janice

Is theft to my gear covered?

Unintentional Hazards of Unattended Vehicle Warranties/Exclusions

Unattended vehicle exclusion/warranty forms differ wildly from company to company, with the common theme being there has to be some sign of break-in for an equipment loss to be covered. What makes it difficult though is the definition of what is an “unattended vehicle”. For some companies to get coverage, you have to provide proof of break in, proof that the vehicle was locked AND secured in a locked or fenced facility, AND that you had watchmen/security guards there for loading/unloading. Pretty stiff conditions to meet, especially the locked/fenced facility part if you are working in more remote locations. It makes sense that you would have to show some sort of physical evidence to show what happened to the property, it can’t just be “missing”. The other conditions on the form ensure

10

that the policy owner will take simple sensible precautions to watch over and secure their property at all times, or the insurance company will not be obligated to pay for any loss or damage. What do you do then if an equipment rental house contract says they will not accept any proof of insurance if the policy has this kind of exclusion? You have a couple courses of action: 1) Ask the agent to see if the exclusion can be removed from your insurance policy. You may have to provide resumes of key personnel, a 3-5 year claims history showing no losses, and a written policy that spells out what security precautions are taken to safeguard the property 24-7. If the underwriter agrees to remove the exclusion, your premium rates may go up. It is unusual for an insurance company to remove these forms, but for a well experienced team they may consider. 2) Ask the equipment rental house if they will waive that provision, and get it in writing. They may require a larger deposit. 3) Check your credit card agreement to see if there is any provision where if you place a deposit for the full value of the equipment on that credit card, if they would cover theft if no other insurance policy is available or collectible. Some premium credit cards offer better options in this regard. Before starting production on your next project, be sure to consult with a film production insurance specialist. They will have a full understanding of the specific types of coverage you need to protect your project. The Wisdom of W.C.F. submitted by simon king

It has been a century since the comedic actor W.C. Fields muttered his memorable morsel of wisdom, “Never work with animals and children” and yet, here I was in the early morning hours standing in the drizzling rain on the first day of production for the episodic Dani’s Bucket List directing two teenagers while an overly enthusiastic golden retriever sat between them panting heavily into their lav mics. While Mr. Fields’ words rattled in my ears, I could be no happier than I was today. The actresses, Rachelle Henry playing the title role of “Dani” and Madisyn Lane as “Natalie,” a teenager facing the dual dilemma of a possible pregnancy and being kicked out of her house by her single father, were proving W.C.F’s words of wisdom wrong. The set was running like a well-oiled Swiss machine with crew always one step ahead and talent saying lines with just the right emotion. Even the puppy seemed to know exactly when to raise her paw and place it lovingly on Natalie’s arm. Dani’s Bucket List started in February of 2016 as a late-night text correspondence between Rachelle and me. Rachelle had asked me to write a short script that could be shot and used as material for her reel and the reels of others that would be involved. As I began writing I realized there was the opportunity to extend my initial concept into a series. Within the week, I met with my good friend and veteran Pacific Northwest director of photography, Ken Luba to discuss the project. It took only minutes before Ken was on board not only as DP, but also as the show’s Associate Producer. Ken quickly assembled a crew that any feature film would be thrilled to have. Every strategic crew position was filled with senior talent from the Portland and Salem area. Eric Macey came on board as AC, Patrick Blevins was to be the key grip, Derek Ecklund handled sound, Aaron Nelson was our gaffer, and Ken rounded out the crew with Janet Beeson as the show’s script supervisor. Meanwhile, I pulled together a strong cast of teens for the primary roles, mixing in a few adults in supporting roles. In addition to Rachelle and Madisyn, I signed up Connor Muhl, Eli Stevenson, and Sophie Giberson as the teen cast and added the beautiful Candi Kadel as Dani’s mother and the amazing Glen Baggerly as Natalie’s father. Picture This was our go-to for all equipment we would need to shoot the show.

16

Cast and crew set, it was now essential to secure locations and a support team that would help make the grueling shoot a success. I say grueling because we would be shooting 23 pages of script on five sets in four locations all within a two-day period! Everything had to be planned meticulously and the plan followed with absolute precision. Of course, this is filmmaking so one should always expect the unexpected. In addition, this is Oregon so the weather gods always have the last word. A planned crane shot had to be dropped at the last moment due to rain and our late night mall location came complete with construction crews and painters on scissor lifts creating noisy havoc at all the wrong moments; this despite having paid a hefty location fee. In the end, cast and crew helped us collect a wonderful plethora of shots that Ken and I, working with Nancy Anderson at Bingo Lewis Editorial in Portland, pulled into a tight edit. Later, Rob Anderson (also at Bingo Lewis) perfected the color and Sonic Media Studios tweaked the audio into what would become the first two episodes of Dani’s Bucket List. In late August, six months after my initial script notes, we premiered to a full house at the Lake Theatre in Lake Oswego. The first episode premiered on YouTube in early September and within days had almost 30,000 views. As I write this we are only four days away from releasing the second episode. Now‌ time to put rest of the season inside the camera.

All listings expire on December 31st, 2016. In order to be included in the 2017 SourceOregon printed edition, you must renew your listing by no later than November 30th, 2016. Once you have renewed your listing(s), they will be available online until December 31st 2017. OMPA will not be extending any deadlines to be included in the printed directory. Props, Sound, Post and Interactive Tech are four categories that OMPA still needs assistance reviewing. Please contact us at info@ ompa.org if you have thoughts and suggestions. We are open to shifting categories to meet the needs of the current industry. Suggestions that will be included in the 2017 SourceOregon printed directory are due by September 30th. We will still accept suggestions after that date but it may not make the next printed directory.
