Director’s Letter Dear OMPA Members, I had the joy of meeting so many members over these past few months; from actors to agents, production coordinators to producers, editors to educators, directors of photography to documentary filmmakers and many, many more. You have shown me that OMPA members are passionate about working, committed to helping the industry grow, and generous with time and expertise. In my quest to meet as many members as possible. I travelled to Ashland for SOFaM’s Kick off celebration, met many OMPA members at our Annual Meeting, worked side-by-side with members in Salem for our Industry Day, and mingled with members at our recent mixer. Over the next few months I will be in Eugene, Astoria, Ashland and Bend meeting OMPA members at a variety of events. OMPA’s dedicated Board of Directors has been attending events alongside me. Together, we have been diligently working to champion for increasing the film incentive fund; organizing events to bring our community together for networking and educational opportunities; as well as re-designing the OMPA website, compiling the SourceOregon directory, and strengthening the organizational structure. Clearly, this Board is volunteering many hours of work for OMPA. To add new energy to our Board, you have elected three outstanding members of our community. A warm welcome to our newest Board Members: Shelley Midthun, Director at Oregon Story Board; Jose Behar, Consultant for Electric Entertainment; and Ben Popp, Filmmaker Services Manager at NW Film Center. Thank you to our outgoing Board Members Nathaniel Applefield and Dennis Noreen, who continues to provide vision and dental benefits for our members. We invite you to make the most of your membership. Oftentimes, membership can be compared to social media: if you join and do nothing then you will find yourself disappointed. Contrary to that, take the time to get involved, interact with your community, and watch how opportunities will manifest through your networking. What your membership also provides you is the relief that you can focus on your work and your business relationships while your association, OMPA, is more than happy to diligently lobby to increase the film incentive, broadcast the message of the value of our industry, and promote the work of our members.
Kind regards, Janice Shokrian Executive Director

Justen Harn Named Executive Director of Portland Community Media Portland Community Media (PCM) is proud to announce that, following a national search, The PCM Board of Directors has appointed Justen Harn as Executive Director, effective January 29, 2016. Harn has worked as a nonprofit arts administrator, educator, curator, and cultural engineer. For the last decade he has focused on empowering communities through the art of film, developing innovative platforms that support the work of emerging media makers, both regionally and nationally. As the Hollywood Theatre’s Director of Programs and Community Engagement since 2007, Justen was a principal architect of a dramatic turnaround, transforming a historic cinema on the brink of closing into one of the largest and most celebrated arts and culture organizations in the NW. “The PCM Board was very impressed with Justen’s track record of visionary program development and organizational development,” said Board President Whitney Garcia Jacobson. “He is a talented community builder and community is at the heart of Portland Community Media.” As PCM’s Executive Director, Harn will provide leadership in strengthening community involvement, diversifying resources, and moving into a multiplatform media environment. He will work to grow PCM’s youth media programs, support independent producers, and expand and deepen PCM’s partnerships with nonprofit organizations, particularly those serving ethnically and culturally diverse communities and other groups that have been misrepresented or underrepresented in mainstream media. An expert on community engagement, Harn has curated experiences for leading institutions including The Walker Art Center
and The Portland Institute for Contemporary Art. He has presented on the future of cinema at MIT’s Media Lab, and served as a juror, grant panelist, and consultant for regional and national arts and culture organizations including the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Oscars), the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Regional Arts and Culture Council. In 2014, Harn was named one of Portland’s “Rising Stars” by Portland Monthly magazine. He was among the first 18 leaders selected from around the world to participate in the National Alliance for Media Arts + Culture’s Creative Leadership Lab at the Sundance Institute. Hollywood Theatre Education Programs Announce Spring 2016 Artists in Residence Hollywood Theatre Education Programs are proud to announce two amazing artists-in-residence for spring 2016, who will inspire and collaborate with the underserved youth at partner school Open School North. In January, local Portland artist Perry Pfister began a short-term artist residency to introduce Open School North (OSN) students to the practice of neon fabrication during their science class to understand the application of chemistry in art. During his residency, he presented his work to the school, collaborated with the students to create a custom neon design, and implemented the construction of the neon sculpture. The collaborative sculpture is on view at the Portland Winter Light Festival in February 2016 and will subsequently be permanently installed at Open School North.
In February, Bibi McGill, best known as the lead guitarist for Beyonce, began a sixweek residency at Open School North. She is dividing her time between language arts classes, in which she helps students to write lyrics, and science classes, working with students to produce music and teaching about environmental concepts that will inform a song she and the students will create together. The six-week residency will culminate in a public concert on March 18 (details to be announced). These exciting artist residencies follow Hollywood Theatre Education Programs’ hugely successful artist residency hosting acclaimed digital artist INSA last fall. During his five-week stay, INSA collaborated with Open School North students to create a GIF-ITI, or digitally animated mural which can be viewed in person at Open School North (7602 N Emerald Avenue, Portland) or at the Hollywood Theatre website.

Suspicious Emails Targeting PAs for Work in Other States Some members of our community, namely PAs, have been receiving work offers which appear to be scams. The pattern so far is this: you receive an email claiming to be from a reputable production company, asking if you’re available for work outside of Portland. The rate offered is considerably higher than industry standard rates, and travel expenses— including flights to the location—will be covered as well. If you receive an email that sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Should you receive such an email, keep the following things in mind before proceeding:
● Do the websites in the signature line and email address line match exactly? What does the website look like? The production company may be legitimate, but that doesn’t mean the email originated from there. ● Do not reply to the email. Try contacting the production company through the phone number on their official website, not a number in the email. If there’s no phone number on their site (or in the email—that would be strange!), it’s probably best to ignore the email altogether. Scams come in all forms, use your best judgment to protect yourself from falling victim to one.

Industry Day in Salem Oregon Film Office Executive Director, Tim Williams, and OMPA members trekked to Salem on February 2nd to support increasing funds for the incentive program (OPIF). With only two weeks of notice, we had over 75 industry professionals spend their day in Salem meeting with legislators and sharing their stories about how a vibrant film industry is good for Oregon’s economy. Members arrived from Ashland, Astoria, Bend, Eugene, Hood River and Portland. Thank you! It was a busy day replete with making new connections and giving our legislators a glimpse into how many lives are positively affected by the industry. OMPA’s lobbyists were able to secure one half of the State Capitol’s Gallery. We filled tables with professionals from animation and technology to makeup artistry to drone cameras. Christian Kane, actor from The Librarians, interviewed legislators on camera. Danny Bruno, actor from Grimm, knocked on legislators’ doors and conducted fun, informative interviews.
Two days later OMPA returned to Salem for our hearing in the Senate Finance and Revenue Committee. Tim Williams, along with producers Sean Marc Nipper and Neil Kopp, testified before the committee. Since February is a short session, OMPA continued to encourage our members to send letters of support to their legislators. At date of publication of this CallSheet we have passed out of the Senate Finance and Revenue committee and are moving to the floor for a vote. The bill will then move to the House side for another committee review. OMPA will continue to update our members through our weekly emails. Please continue to share letters with your legislators about how the media industry has affected you and your family.

POWFest Announces 2016 Program The Portland Oregon Women’s Film Festival (POWFest) is pleased to announce the programming highlights of its upcoming festival scheduled to take place March 3-6, 2016 at The Hollywood Theatre. Tickets are $9-$20 for individuals or $60 for a festival pass which includes premium access to all festival activities. In its 9th consecutive year, POWFest continues to be the only film festival in Portland exclusively placing a spotlight on women directors with a goal to eliminate the gender disparity that exists for women working in the film industry. Dedicated to creating professional development and networking opportunities for women filmmakers of every discipline and skill level, each year the festival seeks to showcase the work of women directors from around the globe while strengthening the community of women making films, encouraging the next generation of female filmmakers. And we are mentoring that next generation! POWFest and MetroEast Community Media partnered to host POWGirls, filmmaking workshops for girls 15-19 which encourages creativity, demonstrates the power of storytelling, and gives girls the chance to explore opportunities as future filmmakers – while becoming savvy in technology and media production. In each workshop, a group of girls conceive, write, film and edit their
films – SIX films will make their festival premiere at the 2016 POWFest: BUDDING ROMANCE, WILT, STICKS & STONES, EAR BUDS and two promo pieces created by the Advanced POWGirls for The Portland Kitchen. Participants hail from Portland Metro area high schools as well as Lake Oswego, Battle Ground, WA and Silverton, Or. In addition to incorporating the voices of this next generation of young filmmakers into the festival, POWFest programmers once again have curated a compelling line up of thought-provoking, inspiring and entertaining films for 2016. From local and international features and shorts, to narrative and documentary, and even the innovative and youthful, this year’s line up includes: Short Film Blocks with themes like Quirky, Dark Tales, Documentary Showcase, Aging Gracefully, and our Young Directors program which appeal to broad audiences with their humor, integrity, fun and societal themes. A total of nearly 50 selections will screen over a period of 4 days. POWFest is also pleased to announce this year’s guest of honor, award-winning director and gender equality advocate, Catherine Hardwicke, who will be in attendance throughout the festival. Hardwicke’s direction of the film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling novel, Twilight, launched the worldwide blockbuster franchise, The Twilight Saga and

earned nearly $400 million at the worldwide box office and made her made one of the most commercially successful women film directors. In addition to her impressive filmography, it has been her willingness to be vocal in the ACLU and Equal Opportunity Commission’s investigation of gender bias and pay disparity in the entertainment industry of late that made her the standout woman to honor at this year’s festival. “Catherine Hardwicke’s strong voice and willingness to step publicly into Hollywood’s gender discussion is something to celebrate. Because of her, women are less fearful of being vocal as there has been a groundswell of support to amplify these voices. There is a revolution going on and she is one of the women in the lead,” said POWFest Executive Director, Tara Johnson-Medinger. Ms. Hardwicke will present a Master Class for festival attendees on Sunday morning and will be in attendance for all of her screenings during the festival including a special Q&A on Saturday evening with Women & Hollywood creator Melissa Silverstein. As always, the schedule includes stimulating content to engage the audience through conversations with the over 35 directors in attendance; including local directors Dawn Jones Redstone, Kia Anne Geraths, Christian Henry and Misty Eddyencouraging dialogue beyond the theater as well.

In addition to films, there will be several Educational Events to network and participate in. Purchasing a festival pass to POWFest gives you the opportunity to see as many films you want during the festival without fumbling with individual tickets while saving money and showing your support. Festival pass includes access for early seating, admission to our Filmmaker Panel and the Seed & Spark Workshops “Crowdfunding for Independence” and “The Art of the Pitch” all taking place at The Hollywood Theatre. Choreographer/Filmmaker Celia Rowlson-Hall to Receive Juice Award “Rowlson-Hall’s transfixing approach to filmmaking, which folds one art form into another, allows her to employ her body as a storytelling vehicle…” -Filmmaker Magazine. The Ashland Independent Film Festival has announced that the winner of its first Tangerine Entertainment Juice Award – an initiative to recognize and reward emerging female directors – will be presented this year to New York director/choreographer/ writer Celia Rowlson-Hall. Festival audiences will have a chance to see her
work when we screen her first featurelength film, MA, in which she retells the story of Mother Mary’s pilgrimage, setting it in the American Southwest and emphasizing movement over dialogue.” HammerToNail. com described the film as “astonishing … easily one of the most brazen and beautiful independent films I’ve seen in years.” About Rowlson-Hall Rowlson-Hall, 31, began her career as a dancer and choreographer for theater, but quickly embraced film when she was asked to help create the music video,Electric Feel, for American rock band MGMT.
