PSU Announces New Film Scholarship The Film Program and the College of the Arts at Portland State University are pleased to announce the Koerner Camera Film Scholarship, the inaugural film scholarship in the School of Theater + Film. This scholarship will provide access to high quality film education and pre-professional training for two undergraduate film students with a course of study emphasizing cinematography. Two $5,000 scholarships will be awarded each year for five years. Michael Koerner is the founder of Koerner Camera Systems Inc., the largest motion picture camera rental house north of Los Angeles. With offices in Portland and Seattle, Koerner Camera Systems’ notable clients include Grimm, Portlandia, WILD, The Librarians, Nike, Adidas and Wieden + Kennedy. Koerner was working as a camera assistant when he first saw the need for a camera rental house in Portland and founded Koerner Camera in 1996 to provide high-quality gear to film crews working locally. The business has since become an integral part of the thriving film community in Portland, and he greatly values the ongoing relationships with his clients.
Founding this scholarship is his way of giving back. “This community of filmmakers has gotten behind me over the years,” he says. “If Grimm and Portlandia and the dozens of local production companies hadn’t supported me, I wouldn’t be able to make this gift … I see this scholarship as coming not just from me, but from the whole film community in Portland. We’re all in this together. It’s no secret that Koerner Camera has the majority of the market locally, so I feel that this PSU scholarship gift is the result of that success.” For 2015-16, the Koerner Camera Film Scholarships have been awarded to Film majors Jaden Fooks and Sean Burns, two outstanding students who recently completed coursework in cinematography. Jaden Fooks will enter her final year at PSU this fall and has a strong interest in film production. This scholarship will allow her to focus entirely on her studies next year and reach her goal of graduating in June 2016. Like Jaden, Sean Burns has focused his studies on film production; he also works as a student employee in the Film Program equipment room. Sean is a junior Film major and is also enrolled in PSU’s Urban Honors College.

APP-NW Reaches First Fundraising Goal
Actors Happy Hour on Tuesday, May 19 at Mother’s Bistro was a rousing success on all fronts, given that APP-NW had an ambitious agenda for the evening. APP-NW’s monthly Actors Happy Hour always features a conversation on a topic of interest to our members, and this month the topic was OPIF/iOPIF, Oregon’s film incentive programs. Before that conversation started, however, APPNWDirectory gave a report on its efforts to acquire roduction true, 501(c)3, not-for-profit status. 503.228.8822 Nathaniel Applefield of OMPA gave info@sourceoregon.com a great report on the current status of legislation in Salem to improve and

extend the Oregon Production Investment Fund (OPIF) and the Indigenous Production Investment Fund (iOPIF). To round out the discussion of OPIF/iOPIF 2015, Lara Cuddy of Reverie Films shared her experiences with the programs from the producer’s perspective. But the biggest surprise of the evening came as Nathaniel Applefield led an Ad Pro impromptu “paddle2015 raiser”Electronic to collect cash and pledges to fund APP-NW’s filing fees to acquire 501(c)3 status. As a result, APPNW raised enough to be able to complete its 501(c)3 filing.

Lyla Foggia Presents Film Marketing Workshop Need an excuse to spend more time on Mt. Hood this summer? Chill out on Mt. Hood’s awesome Salmon River while learning how to market your film like a pro! This new summer workshop series includes time for hiking, mountain biking, golfing, jogging and even fly fishing. With the start of the new festival season just around the corner, film marketing consultant Lyla Foggia is offering a new three-part workshop series at her Salmon Riverfront studio in Welches during July and August. Available as individual sessions on a choice of dates, the series shows filmmakers how simple it is to strategically position and platform a film by how the media kit and other elements are written; the key art and website are designed; and an audience can be built through a combination of publicity, niche marketing, and social media networking. Each session starts at 1 PM, allowing participants to spend the morning hiking, biking, golfing and even fly fishing before settling in for a 5 hour film marketing discussion, followed by dinner and drinks on the riverbank. Each workshop costs $70 per person or $195 for all three sessions. (Meals and beverages not included.) Advance registration required. Checks and most major credit cards accepted. Call 503-622-0232 or email lyla@foggiapr.com for more details and to request a registration packet.
Also available for one-on-one private consultations, Foggia recently coached Portland filmmaker Courtney Scott through the challenges of creating a media kit and website for her first outing as a filmmaker with the documentary, “From Suffering to Satori.” Following is Scott’s account of the experience: “As a first time filmmaker, I encountered all the usual pitfalls, trials and tribulations of getting a film from conception to completion. When the film was in the can, I soon discovered there was another gigantic hurdle to leap. How to get the film seen and distributed to a wide network of festivals and moviegoers. Enter Lyla Foggia. Thanks to Lyla’s vast experience as a Hollywood publicist, I now know how critical key art is and how it, along with the logline, has to carry the message of the film in a way that moves people to want to buy a ticket to see it. Making a film is one thing. Getting it seen is a very different one that requires a set of skills that I, like most filmmakers, do not have. Lyla not only has the skills, she is a tireless worker bee who makes sure the message conveyed about the film is one that has the absolute most impact it can have — one that will get the film into festivals — and sell tickets.”
