DIRECTOR’S LETTER Dear OMPA Members, Summertime is upon us, many productions are in full swing around town and schedules are busier than ever. It is great to visit our hard-working members and see you in action. You set the bar high and rise to the challenge time and again. This June, OMPA will be sharing with you feedback from a survey conducted by University of Oregon’s School of Journalism. Professor Josh Netzer’s class has been analyzing the results and we, OMPA’s board, will share the results at our TownHall meeting on June 6th (see story inside). Hearing from our members, both current and past will provide much needed confirmation that our membership driven association is meeting the advocacy and articulated needs of our members. This is an open mic format, so please know that we want to hear from you. Since the inception of OMPA, we have been championing for the industry in both local governments and state wide politics. To this end, I recently delivered 2015 SourceOregon directory to every legislator in Salem. The enthusiasm with which I was greeted was confirmation that our association brings joy, jobs and growth to Oregon. This trifecta is a rarity in Oregon and OMPA is committed to reminding our legislators what our members do best. Please don’t be shy about sharing your successes, stories and projects with OMPA. We are here to promote the work of our members and to share your news broadly. Enjoy the many articles submitted by our members and be inspired to send us your article. I look forward to seeing everyone at our Town Hall event. Sincerely, Janice Janice Shokrian Executive Director

The NW Film Center Presents River of Fundament June June 3-5, 2016

(PORTLAND, OR) – Set across the contemporary American landscape, the three-part River of Fundament is an epic story of regeneration and rebirth. Loosely based on the 1983 Norman Mailer novel Ancient Evenings, with an ancient Egyptian protagonist who sought reincarnation three times in the hope of achieving immortality, the film borrows its structure from Mailer’s text, corresponding to the seven stages the Egyptian soul undergoes in its journey toward new life. Conceived as a nontraditional opera written in collaboration with longtime collaborator Jonathan Bepler, documentary footage of three outdoor performances in Los Angeles, Detroit, and New York are combined with a live-action film largely set in a careful recreation of Mailer’s Brooklyn brownstone apartment, where the late author’s wake is underway. With Maggie Gyllenhaal, Paul Giamatti, Elaine Stritch, Ellen Burstyn, Joan La Barbara, Deborah Harry, Jonas Mekas, Salman Rushdie, and many more, Barney’s (The Cremaster Cycle, Drawing Restraint 9) multidimensional experience is a sprawling, hypersexual allegory of death and resurrection. “The only thing you can say with any great certainty is that Barney’s magnum opus is deliberately calculated to divide opinion. It’s a significant work of art. It’s full of shit. But as Norman Mailer consistently and maddeningly proved, it’s quite possible for both of these things to be true at the same time.”—The Guardian, London.

Oregon Film Updates There are as many projects being produced here in Oregon as there are being celebrated at festivals and screenings around the state. The indie features, “Black Road” and “Tracktown,” have upcoming screenings in Portland and at the LA Film Festival, respectively. Last month’s DisOrient Film Festival was a success, but look forward to The Archaeology Channel International Film and Video Festival, Filmed by Bike Fest, the NW Animation Festival, The International Youth Silent Film Festival, and the Oregon Doc Camp (Silver Falls) to check out this coming month. On

the production side, “The Librarians” returns for Season 3, and celebrating the official return of “Grimm” later this summer for Season 6. We were lucky enough to visit the set of the feature film “Seaside” as it kicked off filming in Arch Cape recently, and we are looking forward to welcoming several other features being produced throughout the state this summer. Watch this space. (Oh, and don’t forget iOPIF submission opened on May 2.)

Entertainment Weekly’s “Fight Club Author Chuck Palahniuk is Crowdfunding a Lullaby Movie” The first rule of Lullaby is Chuck Palahniuk wants to talk about Lullaby. The Fight Club author has announced a Kickstarter campaign to finance a film adaptation of his eerie 2002 novel about a deadly nursery rhyme. The project is a collaboration with indie filmmakers Andy Mingo and Josh Leake, who optioned the Lullaby film rights last year. Palahniuk is serving as executive producer and co-wrote the screenplay with Mingo, who will direct. Leake is on board as producer. Lullaby tells the story of Carl Streator, an over-the-hill journalist who investigates a rash of mysterious infant deaths and discovers an ancient “culling song” that has been published in a children’s book. The novel is a deeply personal work for Palahniuk, who wrote it while he was

mourning his slain father and grappling with his feelings about the death penalty. In a campaign video, Mingo says, “For us it’s really important that we maintain creative control of this project to make sure that it’s the film that Chuck fans want to see.” The filmmakers are looking to raise $250,000 in order to shoot later this year in Oregon, with an eye toward a festival premiere in late 2017 or early 2018 and a subsequent public release. Kickstarter incentives include props and signed memorabilia, as well as opportunities to appear as extras and make production decisions. More information is available on the project’s Kickstarter page. Click here for the link to the original article by Oliver Gettell.
