Dear OMPA Members, As your new president, I want thank you for placing faith in me to serve the members of Oregon’s film, video and digital media industry. Newly elected officers Mary McDonaldLewis (1st VP), Jacqueline Gault (2nd VP), and Dennis Gleason (Treasurer) add their gratitude as well. Together with a terrific board of working professionals and supported by our excellent staff, we are excited to help guide OMPA into the future. All of us sense change in the wind. The Governor’s Office of Film and Television welcomed new commissioner Tim Williams last fall. Leadership in Oregon’s highest political office is now in Kate Brown’s hands. Along with other shifts in key government seats, our presence in Salem is critical as we work to ensure more work for all of you. And with Grimm, The Librarians and Portlandia all confirmed for next season, allocating new dollars, crew, and production facilities for Oregon-based and out of state projects wanting to shoot in Oregon is top priority. OMPA is facing exciting changes, too. In February our executive director Tom McFadden departed the organization after nearly seven years of outstanding service. Nathaniel Applefield is interim director, with a search for a permanent executive director commencing soon. As we enter into legislative session, Nathaniel’s deep experience and longtime relationships in Salem and his passion for our industry will carry our message well. His time as executive director for Portland SAG-AFTRA and his terms as OMPA board member have already connected him to many of you, and he looks forward to supporting you all. We owe Tom McFadden a tremendous debt of gratitude – the organization is strong, with growing professional membership and a powerful, united voice because of his leadership. Thank you, Tom! Change brings opportunity. To examine an organization’s systems, from member communications to computer interface. To consider structure, from committees to events. To refresh and fine-tune what works, and re-invent what isn’t. We have a board of directors comprised of pros from a true cross-section of our members: independent producers to local production studios; entertainment attorneys to insurance and financial services; on-camera talent to below-the-line crew. This board is ready to take OMPA into a healthy and sustainable future, focusing on powerful government partnerships; attracting work to Oregon; inspiring and educating a diverse membership, and connecting passionate creators to each other. You elected us to serve you. Now we ask you to join us today as together, we build an amazing tomorrow. Warmest Regards, David Cress

Pro Photo Supply Presents Lighting for Video Workshop With Gary Nolton, Thursday, April 30, 6-10pm Pro Photo Supply is pleased to offer a Lighting for Video workshop, presented by award winning Director/Cinematographer Gary Nolton of Limbo Films at the Pro Photo Supply Event Center (1801 NW Northrup St, Portland, OR 97209) on Thursday, April 30th from 6 to 10 PM. This workshop is intended for the still photographer who is interested in entering the filmmaking world or the beginning videographer. Attendance costs $250 for those who register before April 1 and $299 thereafter. The class will learn the unique aspects of lighting actors for motion, multiple angles and editorial continuity for digital cinema, something that even experienced photographers should find enlightening. Gary Nolton will illustrate his methods of lighting scenes for narrative films and commercials. Imparting the extensive knowledge gained from over 25 years of professional image making experience, Gary will conduct

this lecture in a practical workshop style. Using a minimal set staged inside the Pro Photo Supply event space, Gary will instruct how to light the same environment for both a day/interior and night/interior scene, utilizing working actors as he illustrates how to block and cover a given scene. Various types of constant source lighting units will be on hand from low cost Ikea ‘China Balls’ up to professional Dracast LED and Joker HMI units. These are all vital parts of the current video production toolbox and Gary will explain the unique properties and advantages of each. Gary’s personal ARRI Alexa HD Camera will be on set to display the scenes as they are composed. For maximum benefit to the students, this class will be limited to no more than 20 and online registration is required. For more information and to register, visit the event page.

BendFilm Presents “A Wild Night in Bend” March 7, 7 PM at The Old Stone Church in Bend BendFilm is hosting a screening of two independent films celebrating the Pacific Crest Trail and the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at 7:00 PM at The Old Stone Church in Bend, OR. Filmmakers will be in attendance. The headlining film, “Only the Essential,” is a truly independent documentary film by former Bend resident, Colin Arsiman. Arisman and friend Casey Gannon thruhiked the Pacific Crest Trail with cameras in hand. “Only The Essential” is the story of their five month, 2,668 mile journey on foot from Mexico to Canada across the wilderness of California, Oregon and Washington. Their goal was to capture the brutal, yet breathtaking, ebb and flow of thru-hiking. The film serves as a window to experience the Pacific Crest Trail and witness the value of simplifying life to a point where “only the essential” remains. Arisman and Gannon are scheduled to attend for a post-screening Q&A and a raffle. (See more information and the trailer here: http://www.onlytheessential. com/watch) A screening of “The Meaning of Wild” will open the evening. The film is a half hour documentary film that takes viewers on a journey through one of our nation’s wildest landscapes, the Tongass National Forest of Southeast Alaska. The film follows wildlife cameraman Ben Hamilton as he travels by boat, plane, kayak and foot to capture and share the true value of wilderness. Along the journey, Ben encounters bears, calving glaciers, ancient forests and harsh seas, but it’s the characters he meets along the way that bring true insight to his mission. (See more information and the trailer here: http://www.meaningofwild.com/)

“We’re excited to bring these films to Bend – a town that truly appreciates the natural wonders of our country and area,” said BendFilm Director, Todd Looby. “Though we loved “Wild,” we wanted to celebrate the PCT in true indie style. Colin and Casey’s film is a genuine, raw, humbling and allencompassing look at the beauty and challenges of the Trail. And ‘The Meaning of Wild’ is a perfect complement. Both films remind us that the Wilderness Act is even more relevant now than it was 50 years ago.” Tickets are available on BendTicket.com and on the BendFilm website.

2015 Oregon Media Arts Fellowship Announced

Program Supports Outstanding Oregon Moving Image Artists The Northwest Film Center and the Oregon Arts Commission are pleased to announce the winners of the 2015 Oregon Media Arts Fellowship: Michael Turner and Joan Truckenbrod. Turner is a filmmaker living in Scotts Mills, Oregon who directed THE LIFE OF VESPER GEER (2013), a biographical documentary that premiered on Oregon Public Broadcasting. His current project titled THE WAY WE TALK is a featurelength documentary that explores the ways stuttering has affected his life. Corvallis video artist, Truckenbrod, creates video sculptural installations in which the narrative of video projection intervenes in the cultural meaning of an object. The project outlined in her application, titled SEARCHING ESTUARINE SPACES, involves recording the fluctuating state of estuaries around Oregon and creating physical structures to be projected upon. Truckenbrod plans to exhibit this new work at the Corvallis Art Center in November 2015.

The Media Arts Fellowship supports Oregon filmmakers who have demonstrated an ongoing commitment to the media arts. Jurors reviewed the 16 submissions from applicants throughout the state, weighing artistic merit, the potential of the proposed activity to advance the artist’s work, and the feasibility of the projects proposed. The two 2015 winners will share the $5000 Fellowship which is currently funded solely by the Oregon Arts Commission. The Northwest Film Center administers the Fellowship and is currently looking for additional funders to grow the Fellowship. The application deadline for the 2016 Oregon Media Arts Fellowships is October 1, 2014. Applications will be available online by June 1, 2015. Information is available from the Northwest Film Center, www.nwfilm.org; or by contacting Thomas Phillipson, thomas@ nwfilm.org, or the Oregon Arts Commission, www.oregonartscommission.org.

And we are mentoring that next generation! POWFest and MetroEast Community Media partnered to host POWGirls 2015, a filmmaking workshop for girls 15-18 that encourages creativity, demonstrates the power of storytelling, and explores opportunities as future filmmakers – while becoming savvy in technology and media production. Participants hail from Portland area high schools: Lincoln, Madison, Parkrose, Beaverton, La Salle, Silverton, OregonVirtual Academy, home school, Early College High School and St. Mary’s. “POWFest has been devoted to offering a space for women filmmakers to connect and share their experiences and learn from each other. Now that we have successfully launched our youth program POWGirls, we are extending that reach to the next generation of women working in media. Beyond offering production and post-production skills, this program provides skill-building in leadership and selfexpression by providing a safe environment for these young women to freely share their stories,” shared POWFest Executive Director, Tara Johnson-Medinger. In addition to incorporating the voices of this next generation of young filmmakers into the festival, POWFest programmers once again have curated a compelling line up of thought-provoking, inspiring and entertaining films for 2015. From local and international features and shorts, to narrative and documentary, and even the innovative and youthful, this year’s line up includes: Short Film Blocks with themes like Quirky, Dark Tales, Animation & Experimental; AFI Directing Workshop for Women Showcase; Feel Good Documentaries and our Young Directors program – appealing to broad audiences with their humor, integrity, fun and societal themes. A total of nearly 65 selections will screen over a period of 4 days. As always, the schedule includes stimulating content to engage the audience through conversations with the over 45 directors in attendance -- including local directors Heather Harlow, Lara Gallagher, Hope Alexander, Teresa Drilling and Janique

03.2015 Robillard -- encouraging dialogue beyond the theater as well. In addition to films, there will be several social events to network and participate in. OSP Latino Club Seeks Videographer for Community Service Project The OSP Latino Club, an inmate cultural awareness group at the Oregon State Penitentiary, is seeking a videographer willing to collaborate in its latest effort to help a young member of the outside community. The club’s responsibility is to promote in its members a desire to change for the better, that they may live more productive, law-abiding lives upon returning to their respective communities. The group also places great emphasis on doing everything possible to make amends and give back to the communities that they harmed. Recently, for example, in an effort to help the family of 13-year old Oswaldo JimemezHernandez, who will soon be undergoing life-saving surgery, the club conducted a fundraiser that allowed its members to present his mother with a $2,500 check, which will allow her to remain in the Stanford Medical Center area during her son’s post-operative stay. Club President Rafael Mora describes the current project: “Fourteen-year old Itzel, who was born with Down’s Syndrome, dreams of experiencing the same rite of passage celebrated by most Hispanic girls upon reaching their fifteenth birthday: her ‘Quinceañera.’ This celebration, very

similar to the ‘Sweet Sixteen’ celebration for American girls, marks the point in every Hispanic girl’s life when she passes from ‘child’ to ‘young woman.’ Itzel, who will turn 15 in May, has witnessed many such Quinceañera celebrations while growing up in a traditional Mexican family. And despite her serious disability, she yearns as deeply as any other Hispanic girl to experience and celebrate her own Quinceañera. To this end, our Latino Club is doing everything possible to help her family make this happen for Itzel. For example, we enlisted the services of a local mariachi group to perform at Itzel’s Quinceañera. We’ve asked a local restaurant to assist in catering the event. And we’ve also enlisted the services of a local photographer to shoot pictures of the celebration. Now, I am seeking a videographer willing to donate his/her services to film Itzel’s Quinceañera in Roseburg OR, so that she may be presented with a DVD record of this most special moment in her life.” For more information or to offer your help, contact Rafael Mora at Joe.A.Gil@doc. state.or.us.

The Northwest Film Center Presents The Globe as a Graph March 11, 7pm at Whitsell Auditorium The Northwest Film Center’s continuing commitment to highlighting cinematic works produced in the Northwest region is housed within its Northwest Tracking series. On Wednesday, March 11, the Film Center is thrilled to present THE GLOBE AS A GRAPH, the new film by Portlandbased director Marcus Cotten at Whitsell Auditorium in the Portland Art Museum (1219 SW Park Ave). Cotten’s film/music essay examines the average day with the intervention of a little bit of imagination. Through melody, image, color and natural sound, his film constructs a look at the connecting world we live in—language, growth, time, man and celebration; city, ocean, discovery,

color and light—in 25 non-linear sections. The music, composed and performed by Cotten, was created simultaneously with the film, underscoring an expression of the intrinsic duality of human perception. Cotten employs a system to create an emotional compass for the viewer using three primary colors: red for dark outlook, yellow for uncertainty and blue for optimism. (100 mins.) Director Marcus Cotten will be in attendance. Admission costs $9 for the general public, $8 for students and seniors, $6 for children. Advanced tickets can be purchased at http://bit.ly/1EobbaF.

The convention takes place April 11 – 16 in Las Vegas, Nevada. OMPA Members will receive free Exhibits-only registration ($150 value) and $100 off the SMART or Conference Flex Pass when registering before March 27 at the NAB website. See the OMPA Members-only “Monday Mail” for the discount code. Leading off the conference on Monday, April 13, from 10:30am to 12:00pm will be the Super Session “Constant Cravings – Using OTT to Win the Next Generation of Viewers,” which will address the evolution of the OTT landscape in 2015, particularly as it pertains to loosening pay TV subscription requirements and the opportunities arising from increased timeshifting and place-shifting alike. Beginning on Tuesday, April 14, through Wednesday, April 15, attendees will be able to attend the Online Video Conference, which will feature discussions around topline issues that subscriptionbased content providers face when monetizing video across a variety of

platforms. “Today’s consumers want access to their favorite content anytime, anywhere,” said Chris Brown, executive vice president of Conventions and Business Operations at NAB. “This new paradigm creates new challenges for media professionals – how to deliver the best content experience, what platforms to create that experience for, and lastly, how to best monetize throughout. We are pleased to host discussions that answer these questions, and more, at NAB Show.” On Tuesday, April 14, the Digital Strategies Exchange for Television (DSX4t) conference will feature presentations that focus on the intersection of digital and television. In addition to the aforementioned sessions and conferences, NAB Show will also feature the Connected Media IP Pavilion, which will focus on IP-centric technologies (such as IPTV, OTT, mobile, social, and cloud) and how they enable audiences to receive, discover, interact and engage with content across any device, anywhere. Via a combination of exhibits and seminar programming, the Connected Media IP Pavilion will educate attendees on the best ways to create and deliver the best multiscreen audience experience. Key NAB Show exhibitors in the OTT community will display the latest in authentication solutions, cloud technology, set-top-boxes, streaming platforms, television automation and more.
