NW Film Center Presents 42nd Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival November 12-18, 2015

The Northwest Film Center is proud to announce the lineup for its 42nd annual survey of new work by regional media artists, the Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival (formerly the Northwest Film & Video Festival), which takes place November 12-18, 2015. This year’s Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival (NWFest42) presents 45+ short and feature films from filmmakers across the Northwest, selected by guest Festival judge Steve Anker. Anker is the former Dean of the California Institute of the Arts School of Film/Video and formerly served as director of the San Francisco Cinematheque as well as artistic director of the Foundation for Art in Cinema. He holds an MFA in Filmmaking and Film History from Columbia University and taught for many years as professor of film at the San Francisco Art Institute. Festival film highlights include director Lewis Bennett’s THE SANDWICH NAZI, a feature-length expansion of his short film, which screened to much audience acclaim at the 39th Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival; Zach Weintraub’s SLACKJAW makes its Portland debut after premiering earlier this year at the Locarno Film Festival; WELCOME TO THE CIRCUS, Courtney Coulson’s

involving portrait of a mobile, cross-cultural circus for children in Palestine; Michael Turner’s THE WAY WE TALK investigates one of medical science’s most baffling and enduring disabilities — stuttering — through the personal experience of its director; Ian Berry’s MAKE MINE COUNTRY uncovers the curious impact of classic country music on the Caribbean Island of St. Lucia; Sasha Snow’s HADWIN’S JUDGEMENT focuses on the non-fiction drama behind the removal of the largest, oldest, and most valuable trees from British Columbia’s forests; and Pam Minty gently unearths her mother’s memories of landmarks remembered from before the loss of her sight in DIRECT ROUTE. In addition to features, the Festival offers three programs of short films. Shorts I: Fantasies and Diversions— a collection of films from makers based in Portland, OR, Seattle, WA, Tacoma, WA, and Vancouver, BC—will kick off the Festival on Opening Night at 7 p.m. with filmmakers in attendance. Shorts II: Tracing Space and Shorts III: Intimate Portraits are collections of films by makers throughout the NW region, ranging from the experimental to animation to narrative and non-fiction.

11.2015

Beyond the numerous screenings on offer, the Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival also provides opportunities for aspiring and working filmmakers to interact directly with peers and industry professionals through events such as the Northwest Filmmakers’ Un-Conference, previously BarCamp, an opportunity for the regional filmmaking community to gather together and explore the issues and challenges facing today’s independent filmmaker. Filmmakers whose work did not make it into the Festival have been invited to submit their short film into the popular program, “What’s Wrong with this Picture?,” hosted by Seattle curator Warren Etheredge for a program illuminating the pitfalls of selling your film to a programmer in 2 minutes or less. To complement the festival, the very first Northwest Filmmakers’ Expo (Thursday, Nov. 12, 10am-5pm) will bring together buyers and users of filmmaking equipment and services with top regional and international vendors offering a hands-on look at their latest technology and the multitude of filmmaking resources available. Already confirmed vendors include Canon, Zeiss, JVC, Panasonic, and Sony among many others. While drawing heavily from film and video industry professionals, the Expo— held in the Portland Art Museum’s Sunken Ballroom —will also be a different breed of Expo with many of the top creative agencies in the Northwest also contributing their time and ideas to make this a trade show like no other, one uniquely suited to Portland’s creative film community.

7 This year’s Opening Night party, sponsored by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and the Oregon Cultural Trust, will also be held in the Portland Art Museum’s Sunken Ballroom. Both the entirety of the Expo and the Opening Night Party will feature music provided by XRAY.FM’s DJs. With the exception of one film, all Festival screenings will take place at the Northwest Film Center’s Whitsell Auditorium, located in the Portland Art Museum, 1219 SW Park Avenue. MAKE MINE COUNTRY will screen at the Skype Live Studio (1210 SW 6th Avenue), courtesy of KINK.FM, on Tuesday, November 17 at 7pm with a pre-film reception occurring onsite at 6pm. Festival sponsors and supporters include LAIKA, the Oregon Cultural Trust, the Regional Arts & Culture Council, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Koerner Camera Systems, Pro Photo Supply, Sierra Nevada, McMenamins, Lower Boom, Sokol Blosser Winery, the Oregon Governor’s Office of Film & Television, KIND Healthy Snacks, the Oregon Media Production Association, and Stumptown Coffee Roasters. Lundgrens Release Black Road Their Third Movie Filmed in Southern Oregon Utilizing a vast array of locations, including beaches, mountains, rivers, restaurants, retirement communities, universities, city streets, campgrounds, winding roads, and the Great Cats World Park, Gary and Anne Lundgren have leveraged the beautiful landscape and ease of shooting in Southern Oregon on three feature films. In addition to great locations, their third feature, the sci-fi thriller BLACK ROAD, benefited from partnerships with members of the Southern Oregon community, including Brammo Electric Motorcycles, the Neuman Hotel Group, and multiple local restaurants and equipment houses. “When Anne shared the project with me, I knew it was a good fit for Brammo,” said Jennifer Bramscher. “The sleek design and futuristic look of the Empulse are perfect for the film! It was a partnership that just made sense… We are proud to be supporting local film entrepreneurs in our community and hope others will join us.” The Lundgrens have always been drawn to the area. In 2007, they traveled from Los Angeles to film their first feature, CALVIN MARSHALL (starring Steve Zahn). After a great experience with local crews and locations, Gary and Anne Lundgren moved their production company, Joma Films, to Ashland permanently. In 2012, they made REDWOOD HIGHWAY, the story of a

75 year-old woman walking alone for 80 miles between Grants Pass and the coast. The Lundgrens’ third film, BLACK ROAD is set in the State of Jefferson, the mythical joining of Northern California and Southern Oregon. It was filmed completely in the Rogue Valley and on the beach at Arcadia Vacation Rentals between Brookings and Gold Beach. Now the Lundgrens are embarking on a screening tour through Oregon to show BLACK ROAD to their fans and to the communities who participated in the filming. “The community has been incredibly supportive,” says Producer Anne Lundgren who also worked as the Ashland Location Manager for the 2013 production of WILD. “We love living and making movies here. We have a talented crew we’ve worked with for many years. The people are great, the crews are professional, the landscape is beautiful, the light is perfect, and the clouds billow. There are plenty of great local restaurants and hotels to house guests due to the strong tourism industry. The community is supportive… And people are still proud that movies are made in their town. It’s a wonderful place to raise our family, and we plan to make movies here for many years to come.” BLACK ROAD screened at the Ashland Varsity Theatre through November 5th.

New OMPA Workspace Sought Our OMPA is growing and we need new space. Here are the specs: • In the city core, defined by NW Thurman/NE Broadway on the North side; NW 23rd/NE 33rd on the West/East sides; John’s Landing/Division on the South side. • Approximately 1,000 sq. ft. with its own conference area; 500-600 sq. ft if there is a shared conference area. • Two private offices • Waiting area with room for desk • Own or shared bathrooms • Internet ready

Vision We want to be in a building, and possibly a shared space, with creative folks in our industry. We are happy to share a conference area, kitchen, lobby. Our own space needs to be “closed floor plan” in that we can’t work in an open work environment with other organizations or companies, and it does need to have two (2) private offices. A safe area is required, and windows would be amazing. Parking too, at all possible. Please contact office@omp.org if you have that perfect space or leads to one! Thank you for helping OMPA cross the threshold into a bigger, better program to serve all of Oregon’s industry workers.

Other half of time will be spent on various documentary projects of NW Documentary, which may include shooting, editing, or helping with events, educational programs, and the day-to-day behind the scenes of running an arts non-profit.

Position requires a 10-hour a week minimum commitment, and college credit may be possible for enrolled students. Basic understanding and experience with DSLR video, and editing recommended. Opera Theater Oregon: Big Changes & the Big Screen Screening of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg at Clinton St. Theater November 20 Former Artistic Director Katie Taylor has rejoined Opera Theater Oregon, taking back the hot seat from Erica Melton, who replaced Taylor in 2011. Melton will stay on as Music Director, a role she previously held from 2008 to 2011. Jen Wechsler remains with the company as Film Director. Taylor, Melton and Wechsler collaborated on some of the company’s most memorable productions, including the Baywatch Das Rheingold, Out of Eden (an original adaptation of Jules Massenet’s Werther), Hercules vs. Vampires and the film short “Dick’s In Space.” Taylor previously led Opera Theater Oregon as Artistic Director from 2006 to 2011 and was the artistic visionary behind the development of the company’s novel approach to opera, which emphasizes radical accessibility and playful experimentation. Melton, leading the company from 2011 to 2014, continued this approach with genre-bending productions that interwove opera with film, dance, cuisine and fashion, including the company’s first outdoor production, The Cunning Little Vixen, performed at Wild Goose Farm on Sauvie Island. Hercules vs. Vampires, an original OTO production conceptualized by Taylor and Galen Huckins of Filmusik and composed for OTO by Patrick Morganelli, was remounted by LA Opera in April this year. To celebrate 10 years of making opera safe for America, OTO will screen the sensually ravishing 1964 film that made opera safe for France. Jacques Demy and Michel Legrand’s pop art operatic masterpiece, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg,

stars a young Catherine Deneuve in the role that made her an international star—the beautiful Cherbourg shopgirl swept up in the delirium of doomed first love. OTO is proud to be the first in Portland to bring the lovingly meticulous 2013 2K digital restoration, led by Demy’s widow and fellow filmmaker Anges Varda, to the big screen. Come early for some live French cabaret music from OTO’s yeh yeh girls and a sneak peak at what’s ahead for OTO. When: Friday, November 20 | Doors at 6:00; Live French cabaret show and sneak preview of what’s ahead at OTO at 6:30. Movie at 7:00. In French with English subtitles. Where: Clinton Street Theater (SE 26th and Clinton). All ages. Cost: $10. Available through Box Office Tickets or at the door the night of the screening. Service fee applies.

Opera Theater Oregon will screen Jacques Demy and Michel Legrand’s pop art operatic masterpiece, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, on Nov 20 at 7pm at the Clinton Street Theater in Portland.
