By the time you read this, we’ll know who comprises the 2011 Oregon legislature, not to mention who our next Governor is. That means that OMPA members will be well prepared to talk up our industry to the ‘powers that be’ who shape economic planning for the state - including the OPIF and Greenlight Labor programs which motivate projects to produce in Oregon.

Together we have really raised the bar of how our industry speaks for itself, and it is particularly important to speak knowledgeably and thoughtfully with our neighbors as well as our legislators about why media production is an industry Oregon should continue to cultivate.

OMPA also continues to raise the bar on how we are perceived as a professional association.

We’ve always known that we represent the highest caliber of crew and vendors, but with our increased exposure on the web and in the political landscape, word continues to grow about our amazing trade association! Let’s keep that up by maintaining the best possible practices in our work, and continue to share those best practices with fellow OMPA members.

The OMPA office will spend the next several months monetizing the impact of OMPA’s increased exposure by earning and retaining new OMPA members and new directory advertisers. Fortunately we offer huge value to OMPA members, and incredible branding opportunities to industry advertisers. Your help is always appreciated to spread the word.

The OMPA Awards asks for your recommendations...

The OMPA Awards recognize outstanding members of Oregon’s film, video and multimedia industry. Awards are given for excellence (the Award of Excellence), community participation (the Service and Inspiration award) and potential (the Rising Star) as recognized by industry peers. OMPA invites your nominations by November 30th.

Call For Short Films OpenLens Festival - 2011 The DIVA Center, in Eugene, is calling for short film submissions (15 minutes or less) by Oregon filmmakers for entry in its 7th annual OpenLens Festival - January 28th, 29th, and 30th, 2011. The submission deadline: December 1st, 2010. Convergence, Parallax and Inter-Axial: A 3D Camera Workshop at PTPS Kathleen O’Reilly

Picture This Production Services & Stage hosted a 3D Workshop last month to introduce our community to multiple 3D Camera solutions including the Panasonic AG-3DA1 Camcorder, the first professional 3D dual lens HD video camera in the world, as well as 3D projection and 3D post production solutions.

Free submission for OMPA Members to Faux Film Fest Submissions are open for the seventh annual Faux Film Festival. It’s the only festival in the world specializing in spoofs, satires, mocumentaries, music video parodies, faux trailers, faux commercials, faux education videos, etc. We screen both shorts and features, live action and animated (and puppets), and have a special block for sci-fi and horror spoofs. 3D basic terminology and fundamental principles. We were guided through how physical science combined with aesthetic choices and art direction can produce successful and compelling 3D video imagery. Three different types of 3D projection was demonstrated; hybrid anaglyph (viewed with ColorCode glasses) , circular polarized glasses and active shutter glasses. Next we received a crash course in 3D camera equipment and function as we watched a video produced by Panasonic.

The 3D format includes new and different levels of complexity that have to be taken into consideration when shooting. This video helped reinforce the basic 3D principles as well as when/how to use the camera s internal convergence point calculation functionality.

Panasonic s Bill Kupferle, Stereographer Craig Adkins, and Perry Loveridge were all extremely helpful fielding questions and providing informative answers. Craig showcased footage he shot to illustrate what works and what doesn t work when shooting with the 3D format.

Being able to, not just see, but experience the physical and psychological depth perception was an extremely successful teaching tool. The imagery really drove home the concepts being discussed. Human eyes and brain are used to perceiving physical depth information and have very clearly established expectations. It takes knowledge, skill, and practice to develop a successful 3D shooting style. Viewing and deconstructing 3D films on DVD is a great way to learn about this art form. The 3D format is new to a lot of production houses. We were encouraged to carefully weigh budget considerations regarding the advantages of hiring 3D expertise for shoot days. Another recommendation, increase postproduction budgets for your convergence setting. That translates into multiplying some line items times two.

Picture This served a tasty catered lunch and afterwards we experienced a hands on session with multiple 3D camera systems pointing at multiple sets, and in-depth answers to specific questions regarding production, post production and exhibition. Across the street at the Digital Foundry with Chief Editor John Meyers, a Final Cut Pro demonstration using the Dashwood plug-in was viewed with very cool active shutter glasses. Abundant Summer Production Leads to Plenty of Post-Production for Member Lisa Cicala

Third Annual Digital Marketing Conference

Don’t we all wish summer lasted just a little bit longer? Not only for the sunshine, but for the production that comes with it. Lisa Cicala stayed busy in the post-production world on several projects this summer. She kicked it off with a series of videos for another interactive book for delivery on the iPad and iPhone. A commercial spot for Nikon came next in the editing queue. Lisa was excited to work on an educational DVD with Kathleen Lopez as producer and director for Yoga Calm. The project is geared towards teaching children, including those with ADD, anxiety and other behavior disorders, the many benefits of yoga. The summer came to a close with the completion of two educational videos for coffee farmers in South America. The Spanish language DVDs will be used to teach honey production and mushroom cultivation as additional food security solutions for coffee-producing communities. With the season of change upon us, Lisa looks forward to what’s coming next.

Exploring and Recording Light with Shane Hurlbut and Canon’s Mark II 5D DSLR Camera Pro Photo Supply and Cine Rent West, in association with Canon Camera’s Explorers of Light Educational program, brought Shane Hurlbut, ASC and his mini HDSLR BootCamp to OMPA and other local industry members.

Taught with the expertise that only practical experience can provide, the information was very valuable indeed.

The workshop took place at Cine Rent West’s stage facility. The large space was made comfortable for us to learn about the DLSR system. There were a series of stations, each designed to teach a specific aspect of the system and its workflow.

We began with a hands-on explanation of how to program the camera’s setup menus.

Included were tips about picture styles, ISO and shutter speeds. And not just the numbers – we got clear, fully explained reasoning behind the choices.

The second station consisted of handson cameras rigged up in different shooting configurations. There were two custom-built hand held set ups, one was equipped with a wireless remote follow focus. The support equipment ran the gamut: lights, monitors, super smooth speed rails and standard tripods.

The system’s versatility and configurability quickly became apparent.

Next we moved on to lighting techniques and exposure settings. Shane guided us through a bracketing process with Zeiss, Panavision Primo and Canon lenses in side-by-side image comparisons. We toggled back and forth to see the results with our own eyes. The differences in those results were deconstructed regarding how and why specific lens and filter combinations influenced the image and when/ why one combination was more appropriate than another depending on the shooting circumstances and desired outcome.

The fourth station was used to demonstrate post-production results. Here we were shown side-by-side and before-and-after comparisons as Shane directed our attention to specific areas within the images. We learned why some things are better dealt with in post-production rather than during the actual shoot and vice versa.

Finally, Shane led a session with the Canon 5D Mark II and Canon 7D in an outdoor lighting demonstration using a bounce card. Again, lens, exposure, and neutral density filtration was presented in side-by-side comparisons. We learned how to solve horizontal moiré patterns as well as how to warm up the look of a wet and rainy Portland afternoon.

All in all this was a very satisfying workshop presented in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

Shane and his lovely wife Lydia (they were celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary that weekend) were completely comfortable, inspired and totally approachable. Even those new to digital cinematography walked away with a firm grasp about how to achieve cinematic results with their DLSRs.
