“What’s New Pussycats?”

“Shadows of the Night”

“What’s New Pussycats?” and “Shadows of the Night”

As a child of the ’80s, Robert John Kley grew up during the Golden Age of Rock when album cover art complemented the music. “The aim was to visually prepare the listener for what they were about to hear.” Robert used that as inspiration to capture the “big hair, smoky eyes, high-heel look” for this issue’s “Lavish Adornments.”“Rocker girls eat, sleep and breathe rock ‘n’ roll—and they aren’t afraid to speak their minds through style.”

Although Jerry Metellus says he was more of a fan of Motown, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye and James Brown, he used a few rock icons for inspiration when photographing “Shadows of the Night,” even admitting, “I developed a childhood crush on Pat Benatar. Thank goodness for music videos and the first VCRs. My friends and I would watch her over and over. Don’t ask me about song titles. All I know is that she was hot and sassy.”

We asked Christie Moeller: Heavy metal or ’80s pop? “Neither. I’m a Ramones, Sex Pistols kind of girl.” Christie says she “wanted to give the shoots an edge to show off today’s rocker-chic fashions.” Her favorite photo, which re-creates Pat Benatar’s Get Nervous album cover, prompted this story. “I once snuck into a Debbie Harry and Ramones concert with a particularly crafty boy I was dating. We ended up in the front row, but broke up two days later.”

“Shine Bright Like a Diamond”

“What’s New Pussycats?” and “Shadows of the Night”

“Shine Bright Like a Diamond”

We unleashed Sabin Orr on a sparkling dinner party. From the décor and the invitations to the cocktails and food—it was a challenging shoot. “Food has its own shelf life and all the ingredients and sauces for each dish have their own time frame. It’s important to recognize each component and capture it while it’s fresh.” His ideal dinner-party menu? “Something from the sea with diced jalapeños, tomatoes, green apples, mushrooms, pistachios and a mangohabanero sauce.”

Krystle Randall was quick to point out that the ’80s were a “bit before my time.” But we knew she’s been to enough ’80s theme parties to nail the look. For “Shadows of the Night,” Krystle went for a modern twist on the decade with bold looks— bringing a mix of styles and pulling from the likes of Debbie Harry, Twiggy and Cyndi Lauper. “What’s New Pussycats?” was “a version of the eighties without all the crazy neon and bold colors,” she says.

Everyone wants their party to stand out, so we asked event planner to the stars Wade Williams for his advice. “A wonderful diverse menu paired with unique cocktails,” he says. “Not to mention creating a festive arrival for your guests. Music and décor play a big part when setting the tone for a dinner party. You should also seat your single guests next to other single people. You never know when a love connection might happen!”

An interview with CAesArs PAlACe Crooner MAtt Goss

GOSS ALMIGHTy Matt Goss performs Friday and Saturday evenings in Cleopatra’s Barge at Caesars Palace.

Matt Goss has brought old-time “style and swagger” back to Caesars Palace, where he performs weekends in The Gossy Room at Cleopatra’s Barge. A contemporary reinvention of the vintage Rat Pack swing, he performs an engaging set that’s a mix of his original songs and popular covers like Frank Sinatra’s “Luck Be a Lady” and “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder. The singer also just released a new album, Life You Imagine—an LP that was three years in the making. “I’ve never channeled more energy and musical knowledge into one project,” he says. What can people expect from your Caesars Palace show? If you love great music, swagger and flirtation, sexy dancers in fishnets, and a good time, come to my show. In the show, you pay tribute to Frank Sinatra. What is it that attracts you to him—the man and his music? Frank Sinatra is the personification of masculine energy. He had the sensitive spirit to sing and engage both men and women. I’m greatly influenced by that era in terms of fashion and the kind of camaraderie he had with his friends. I get a kick out of bringing that back to Las Vegas. Tell us how Life You Imagine differs from your previous recordings? Lyrically, I tried to use fewer words but say more. With my melody arrangements, I consciously pulled from the artists I love such as Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra, The Police and Elvis Presley. Is there a common thread that runs throughout the album? My true hope is that when people listen to this album it will become a tapestry of their life. Every song came deep from my heart and soul.

Pitch-Perfect véRonic: a voice foR the ageS

a professional singer with two solo albums under her belt, Véronic diCaire sort of fell into her role as a “vocal impersonator.” The accomplished French Canadian entertainer started doing impressions “just to make people laugh.” but when a video of her imitating the voices of other singers—including Céline dion—was seen by Céline’s husband and manager, René angélil, he invited Véronic to open Céline’s Taking Chances Tour. “after the very first performance, i remember thinking, maybe this is my new life.” Five years later, Véronic has her own show— coproduced by Céline—in the Jubilee! Theater at bally’s las Vegas. segments of the show are devoted to divas (madonna, beyoncé), eighties pop idols (Cyndi lauper, eurythmics), entertainment icons (barbra streisand, Whitney Houston), queens of country (Reba mcentire, Carrie underwood) and today’s superstars (britney spears, Katy Perry). Véronic uses some unorthodox methods to channel these star’s voices—all 50 of them. For anita baker, the singer explains, “i felt like i had to yawn to get her voice right.” and Tina Turner? “i realized that she lifts her shoulders and scrunches her neck,” Véronic observes of the “Private dancer” singer. “i went into my dressing room and got my highest high-heels and put them on—and there she was. she came out of the blue, just like that.”

You can watch our interview with Véronic DiCaire on Vegas Player Television.

Mixing music and an audience-guided Q&A, RockTellz & CockTails marries the ideas of VH1 Storytellers and Inside the Actors Studio. The unscripted series launched with the man responsible for the 1977 classic Bat Out of Hell: “A great storyteller has to embellish a little,” says debut headliner Meat Loaf. “There is a foundation for this show, but every night the house gets built differently,” he says, pausing to add, “I don’t take a stage. I own the room.” Let’s hope other RockTellz headliners bring the same attitude. The series plays at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.

Reigning Queen & King of the StRip: NEW ALBUM RELEASES

Céline Dion Loved Me BacK to Life (Columbia ReCoRds) “It’s a bit edgier than some of my last albums, but there are also some beautiful understated moments to chill out to,” says Céline Dion of her latest studio album, Loved Me Back to Life. Her first English-language release in six years—a mix of ballads and up-tempo songs—includes duets with Stevie Wonder (“Overjoyed”) and Ne-Yo (“Incredible”). “It’s a very positive, uplifting song,” she says of her collaboration with Ne-Yo. “Our voices go well together.”

Vegas!...

THE WAY IT USED TO BE elTon JoHn the diving BoaRd (CaPiTol ReCoRds) Elton John returns to his roots on his new studio album, The Diving Board, reviving the piano, bass and drum sound that launched his career. “It’s an album I’ve been waiting to make for decades,” he says. Elton penned 12 new songs with his longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin. The album is produced by T Bone Burnett. “I feel like I’m starting again, making records,” Elton says. “I realized that I had to go back to go forward again. I needed to strip away the excesses and get back to the core of what I do as an artist.” It’s his first solo studio album in seven years.

Three years and 1.5 million guests later, David Saxe is still celebrating the success of VEGAS! The Show like it’s opening night. With an 11-piece orchestra, showgirls, dancers and specialty acts, VEGAS! is, quite simply, a triumph of Las Vegas glitz and glamour. Says Saxe, “It pays respect to what Vegas used to be back in its heyday.” The show, inside Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, features tributes to performers such as The Rat Pack, Wayne Newton, Elvis Presley, Tom Jones and Sonny & Cher.

Nobu Lounge at Caesars Palace now offers an exclusive fine-dining menu featuring a number of small plates that are only available for two hours after the restaurant’s main room closes. “This is perfect for anyone who wants something unique and elevated late at night,” says general manager Bryan Shinohara. Most plates range between $12 and $18. This includes lobster ceviche, umami chicken wings, and a Wagyu beef “Takumi” slider topped with foie gras and truffle aioli. When it comes to buffets, there are dishes (Bacchanal Buffet serves more than 500 a day) and there are dishes (Carnival World Buffet goes through 30,000 daily, plus chefs use more than 400 pots and pans each hour). In the end, the sheer number of ingredients and chefs it takes to put out each massive spread is a huge undertaking. Here’s a look.

Even before its first birthday, Bacchanal Buffet had served its one-millionth hungry diner. An incredible, yet not surprising, feat given that the Caesars Palace buffet is widely considered tops in town. “We have continued to be creative and push the envelope even after being crowned the best buffet in Las Vegas,” says Executive Chef Michael van Staden. “We have plenty of tricks up our sleeves [for year two].” The menu boasts more than 500 freshly made items, and chefs are adding new dishes all the time. Specialty offerings such as chilled pea soup with crab, braised rabbit and osso buco are new additions to the ever-changing menu.

FIZZ: ChampaGne Wishes and CaViar dreams Reminiscent of their Los Angeles home, Elton John and David Furnish have created a spot for “sophisticated socializing.” FIZZ, a chic 2,750-square-foot champagne lounge at Caesars Palace, features high-end champagnes by the glass and carefully curated spirits. A menu, created by Elton’s personal chef, includes exquisite caviar, charcuterie and small plates. The lounge—rich in gold and muted tones—is a throwback to the style of 1970s designer David Hicks. Photos from the couple’s personal collection adorn the walls. “Spending so much time in Las Vegas, we wanted a space that would reflect our personal style and become an extension of the way we entertain at home,” says Furnish.

Rocker Rod Stewart will be singing “Hot Legs” and kicking soccer balls into the crowd for two more years. In announcing his decision to keep his show, “Rod Stewart: The Hits.,” rolling in Las Vegas, the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee had high praise for performing on the Strip. “The Colosseum at Caesars Palace is one of the best venues in the entire world,” he says. “There’s not a bad seat in the house, and it sounds great—I love it here.” Stewart’s high-energy show includes “Tonight’s the Night,” “You Wear It Well” and “Some Guys Have All the Luck.”

Giada de Laurentiis to open her first restaurant in Las VeGas

Chef Giada De Laurentiis is about to turn her lifelong dream into a “delicious reality.” The author and Food Network star has announced plans to open her first restaurant here in Las Vegas in early 2014. De Laurentiis will serve California-influenced Italian cuisine in a sleek and modern second-story room with large glass windows offering diners spectacular views of the Strip. “Ever since I was a little girl hanging out at my grandfather’s restaurant, I’ve dreamed of having a restaurant of my own,” says De Laurentiis. “The location and the views were just too good to pass up.”

let the journey begin. Just stepping foot into Qua Baths & Spa is a mindaltering experience with its Roman Baths, Arctic Ice Room and tea service. But with the addition of Qua’s new Nobu Spa menu, it’s “life-enhancing,” says spa director Kristin Carpenter. The signature of the six Nobu Spa treatments is the Nagomi Ritual, which incorporates a foot bath, massage and facial. Spa-goers dive into the 100-minute full-body experience feet first as the treatment begins with a cup of tea and a traditional Japanese floral foot bath that utilizes crystallized-honey particles to aid exfoliation. Next up, an artisan drizzles aroma nectars along the spinal column with your choice of scented massage oil before the 45-minute Asian-fusion massage blending Thai, Balinese and Shiatsu movements. The treatment then concludes with a facial and soothing scalp massage. “It’s an all-encompassing experience,” Carpenter says. “Guests are surprised we can fit so much into one treatment. You’re truly getting a full-body experience that leaves you feeling hydrated and more radiant.” Nobu Spa-ahh

There are six treatments on the Nobu Spa menu. In addition to the Nagomi Ritual, guests can choose from two body rituals or two facials— the anti-aging cosmetic lift Diamond Radiance facial or the O 2 Awakening, which infuses pure oxygen molecules into the skin. Nobu Spa also offers a customized body wrap featuring either citrus-oriented ingredients, mud derived from the Dead Sea or a treatment that uses hot and cold elements. All Nobu Spa body wraps are performed under a Vichy shower.

POPPING wIth ExcItEmENt As you rode in from the airport, you probably asked your cabbie, “What’s that?!” The answer: the High Roller— a 550-foot-tall observation wheel that will have riders floating over the neon Strip on a 30-minute trip in an airconditioned, glass-enclosed cabin. The High Roller is the centerpiece of the Strip’s first walkable outdoor entertainment district, The LINQ, which is home to an eclectic mix of restaurants, shops and nightlife venues such as Brooklyn Bowl, a 32-lane bowling alley that transforms into a 2,000-person concert hall. Unique boutiques include hipster haven KOTO, the stylish Goorin Bros. hat shop, the American flagship store of Chilli Beans eyewear and Polaroid Fotobar—where innovative images take shape.

Linked to The LINQ, the quirky Quad is known for its high-energy Dealertainers and dazzling Divas. Card sharks will find celebrityimpersonating Dealertainers on the casino floor, while Frank Marino’s Divas Las Vegas features a cast of celebrity female impersonators— guys being gals—in a stage show of singing superstars. The recently renovated resort has also upped the design ante on the 75,000-square-foot casino floor. In addition, The Quad is home to The Auto Collections (the world’s largest classic-car showroom), O’Sheas Casino and Food Network star Guy Fieri’s first Las Vegas restaurant.

No other city alters its skyline with as much frequency as Las Vegas. And it’s changing again. Work this year shifted to the Center Strip. The most dramatic (and obvious) addition is the High Roller, the world’s tallest observation wheel, which anchors The LINQ, a shopping district with around-the-clock entertainment. Bally’s Las Vegas Longevity rewarded. The city’s last remaining showgirl production, Donn Arden’s Jubilee!, celebrated its 32nd anniversary this past summer; and now, the iconic show has a redesigned hotel tower named after it. The Jubilee Tower contains 756 remodeled hotel rooms including 121 one- and two-bedroom suites ranging from 800 to 1,600 square feet in size. Also new at Bally’s: Drai’s After Hours and VÉRONIC Voices, which stars female tribute artist Véronic DiCaire paying homage to the world’s most popular female recording artists.

King of CluBs VicTor Drai

BY Grace Bascos PHoToGraPH BY erik kaBik

Before the big-name DJs ever stepped behind the decks in the clubs of Las Vegas, there was Drai’s. For nearly two decades, the opulent after-hours club located in the dark depths of what was once Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall & Saloon, thumped away with house music— before EDM (“electronic dance music” for those in the know) was even coined a term. Victor Drai is the nightlife guru who’s been here the whole time. His presence is so constant that when Bill’s closed, Drai’s simply picked up and moved across the street.

The Moroccan-born 20-year veteran of the Vegas club scene was a movie producer in a former life (Weekend at Bernie’s, The Woman in Red), before he began catering to the insomniacs of Las Vegas. So he’s witnessed how the club scene has evolved, both in Europe, where it’s been going strong for over two decades, and in Las Vegas, where it’s emerged as a mainstream form of entertainment just within the past few years. When electronic music became big in Las Vegas, Drai was part of the initial push, opening two mega clubs—XS and Tryst—that set the trend for the atmosphere and high-end service that today is synonymous with the Las Vegas club scene. “People come to Vegas to party,” he says. “That’s the change—music is part of it. Who knows what it’s going to be two or ten years from now. The music might be different, but the nightclubs will stay and people will still party. The party doesn’t change much; it’s just the evolution of the nightclub.” Like the scene, Drai adapts as well. He’s planning to open two new concepts in a boutique Las Vegas hotel soon: a rooftop beach club, as well as a 65,000-square-foot nightclub. The space that currently houses Drai’s at Bally’s Las Vegas will transform into another concept—one he’s keeping under wraps for now. But no matter which of his venues you frequent Victor Drai will still be there, making sure there’s a party happening for those who want to find it.

Big Apple gems in sin City

DINING

IN A NeW York StAte of MINd When it comes to great food destinations, New York always leads the pack. So it’s no wonder, when the dining revolution hit Las Vegas, that top chefs and restaurateurs from the great city were clamoring to get in on the scene here. Soon, outposts of popular classic Big Apple restaurants—and some shiny new ones—began popping up everywhere along our four-mile Strip. So many in fact that we had to narrow our “NY Strip” down to a lucky seven—all of which can be found at Caesars Palace.

MESA Grill Bobby Flay brings heat and flavor to the table of his Mesa Grill restaurant. One of the first bigname chefs to open in Las Vegas when he set up shop a stone’s throw from the Caesars Palace race and sports book nearly 10 years ago, Flay’s crew is still serving big, bold Southwestern flavors today. For Flay, it’s all about textures, spices and heat. That means plenty of chili peppers to balance the fresh fruit flavors, such as mango and papaya, found in his dishes.

Mesa Grill’s prickly-pear margarita and ancho chili-honey glazed salmon (above) and tiger shrimp and roasted-corn tamale (left).

SErEndipit y 3 It may have originated in New York City, but we think the triple-digit temperatures of Las Vegas lend themselves better as a sipping spot for a Frrrozen Hot Chocolate: the signature blended icy beverage—featuring 20 types of chocolate—that’s so good First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis once asked for the recipe but was politely turned down by owner Stephen Bruce. The casual café with a Strip-side patio serves comfort-food favorites for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as its share of drugstore sundaes, milkshakes and floats.

“The Las Vegas dining scene is one of the best in the world. Vegas is a foodies’ dream with the amount of variety and dining hot spots that this culinary destination offers.” —Jeffrey Bank, Carmine’s

pAyArd pâtiSSEriE & BiStro Perfect pastries and decadent desserts are what thirdgeneration French pastry chef François Payard is serving up in his charming patisserie. Named “Pastry Chef of the Year” by the James Beard Foundation in 1995, the chef opened his namesake bistro in New York two years later before bringing his chocolate confections to Las Vegas. In addition to packaged treats, the location here has a small dining room with a centered showcase kitchen, plus counter service where guests can grab fresh pastries, made-to-order omelettes and panini.

Rao’s

rAo’S There is little to no chance of securing a table at the original, famously tiny, 10-table Rao’s in East Harlem. Lucky for us, they grew the Caesars Palace space to 175 tables complete with two side rooms off the main dining area that are exact replicas of the original. Rao’s chefs prepare Italian dishes using family recipes passed down for generations (like Uncle Vincent’s lemon chicken). The original Rao’s opened in New York in 1896.

Old Homestead Steakhouse

Even Annabelle, Old Homestead’s celebrity cow, made the cross-country journey to her new home. She’s now proudly displayed over the entrance. For co-owner Marc Sherry, who has been running the Meatpacking District digs for decades with his brother, Greg, bringing “Texas-size slabs of porterhouse, whale-size lobster and award-winning wine” to Caesars Palace was a no-brainer. And if you thought Rao’s had history, well, Old Homestead dates back to 1868: U.S. Presidents Andrew Johnson and Harry Truman are said to have dined there.

CArMinE’S Bigger is better at Carmine’s, where mounds of pasta arrive on enormous platters. But even the room is huge. A behemoth 27,000-square-foot, multilevel space, with north of 750 seats and 9 private dining areas, it’s equally as stunning as the mammoth dishes coming from the kitchen. “Las Vegas presents visitors an over-the-top experience,” says Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Bank. “Carmine’s serves as a destination where guests are ‘wowed’ at the table with the large, family-style portions.”

So what does a busy chef and Food Network star make for the holidays? Well, Bobby Flay is a traditionalist. “My food is always about taking classic dishes and putting my spin on them, so my mashed potatoes will have plenty of butter and cream, but they’ll also be topped with a green-chile queso sauce,” he says. “I introduced it to my friends and family several years ago, and now I have to serve it every year.”

5 pounds Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and largely diced Kosher salt 2 sticks unsalted butter, slightly softened and cut into pieces, plus 4 tablespoons unsalted butter 4 tablespoons flour 4 cups hot whole milk 2 pounds Monterey Jack cheese, coarsely grated ½ pound sharp white-cheddar cheese, coarsely grated 3 roasted poblano chilies, peeled, seeded and finely diced 2 roasted jalapeño chilies, peeled, seeded and finely diced 1½-2½ cups heavy cream, heated Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg Freshly ground black pepper Chopped fresh cilantro, for garnish 1. Put potatoes in a large pot and cover with two inches of cold water. Add two tablespoons of kosher salt, bring to a boil and cook until the potatoes are tender, 20 to 25 minutes. 2. While the potatoes are cooking, melt four tablespoons butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for one minute. Slowly whisk in four cups of hot milk, increase the heat to medium-high and continue cooking, whisking constantly, until the mixture thickens and the flour taste has been cooked out, about seven minutes. Remove from the heat and slowly whisk in the cheeses, a handful at a time, then add chilies and season with nutmeg, salt and pepper to taste. Keep warm. 3. Drain the potatoes well, and return to the pot over low heat to dry out, then run the potatoes through a food mill into a large glass bowl. Add the remaining butter and warm cream to the potatoes and using a wooden spoon, gently mix until creamy. Season with salt and pepper.

4. Transfer the potatoes to a large shallow bowl. Make a well in the center of the potatoes to ladle the queso sauce into. Garnish with chopped cilantro. Serve immediately.

envied by ladies worldwide, how does l.K.Bennett cater to its international clientele? Stylish women around the world look to L.K.Bennett for fashion that works for their busy lifestyle—beautiful pieces that coordinate easily and make them effortlessly chic. what should the L.K.bennett woman be shopping for this season? She’s shopping for shoes that complete her holiday look, and for us, it’s the Red Gloss Patent. Every woman loves a red pump, especially during party season.

You may not know the brand (yet), but you definitely know the heel. L.K.Bennett—the creator of the famed “Sledge” pump (a perfect nude heel)— has opened in The Forum Shops at Caesars. Among the pump’s admirers: the duchess of Cambridge Kate middleton. Founded in 1990 by Linda Kristin Bennett, originally as a destination for feminine footwear, this London-based fashion house is no longer just known for its modern take on the kitten heel. Adopted as a favorite of celebrities and stylish women, L.K.Bennett quickly grew to include a women’s line, accessories and jewelry while establishing itself at the forefront of fashion with sophisticated desk-to-dinner looks. Here, mark Alden Lukas, L.K.Bennett’s vice president of marketing, explains who the L.K.Bennett woman is and what she’s shopping for this season.

INTERvIEwEd BY CHRIsTIE MOELLER Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton is a fan of L.K.Bennett’s “Sledge” pump

t us ab tell out your design process. about We design to interpret trends and create complete looks. It starts with our heritage in shoes. Bags and ready-to-wear collections complement the shoes in a way that they can be put together with your own creative flair. in fashion, we often break rules. that said, do you have any steadfast rules you don’t stray from? We are proud of our creative approach. We are driven by color, shape and material—but we always think about comfort. That is reflected in our shoes, the functionality and beauty of our bags, and the natural stretch in our clothing. What are the three must-have items from your Fall/Winter collection? Right now, it’s our Florete Point Toe Pump in patent leather, the Rosamund bag that says chic and modern, and the Adela dress in crepe fabric that refuses to wrinkle and is defined by a lovely twist detail. What instantly identifies a design as l.K.Bennett? When it’s feminine and sophisticated with a touch of glamour, then it’s L.K.Bennett. Our British heritage spurs us to reinvent classics and make them modern. Our bold use of color speaks volumes about our customer and how she likes to make a statement.

MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET

“ These fingers of mine have brains in them. Jerry Lee is raising the bar. Every day in every way,” says the reedy Martin Kaye, who portrays Jerry Lee Lewis in the Tony® Award-winning musical Million Dollar Quartet at Harrah’s Las Vegas. The interjections are typical of the smart-alecky piano player’s remarks throughout the show. The confident Lewis is, as Kaye describes, a “wise guy.” Lewis was a talented up-andcomer who at just 19-years-old found himself in a room—the Sun Records studio in Memphis, to be exact—with

superstars Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and Carl Perkins. What resulted was a legendary jam session that is now immortalized in Million Dollar Quartet. “This show is four friends just jamming,” explains Kaye of the once-in-a-lifetime meeting of this fab four. “ The music is organic. We’re playing live every night, so there is remarkable energy.”

Million Dollar Quartet is inspired by the true story of the famed recording session of December 4, 1956, which united icons Jerry Lee Lewis (played by Martin Kaye), Carl Perkins (Robert Britton Lyons), Elvis Presley (Tyler Hunter) and Johnny Cash (Benjamin D. Hale).

“Every fact in the show is historically correct. The idea of being a fly on the wall during this moment in music history with these great musical icons is a natural fit for Las Vegas.” —Producer Gigi Pritzker, Million Dollar Quartet 80

Britney SpearS grew up before our eyes. First appearing as a contestant on Star Search and in commercials, she shot to fame as a preteen after landing a role on the Mickey MouSe club. The young Disney star showed tremendouS talent, drive and confidence—and by age 17, had a chart-topping, BeSt-Selling alBum. But like so many child stars thrust into an intense spotlight, the burden of fame was a heavy weight that often threatened to crush her talent. Spears never let that happen, and now she’s tackling her BiggeSt career move yet: She’s signed a two-year residency where the lights shine the brightest—laS vegaS. iS She ready? aBSolutely.

We’re somewhere in the Mojave

desert, just outside Las Vegas. It’s pitch-black, except for the glare of a few spotlights on the dry lake bed. The hum of generators is drowned out by the frenzied screams of more than 1,300 fans, who met on the Strip and were bused to this secret location in the middle of the night to greet the pop icon. They include a number of young women in pigtails and schoolgirl uniforms, re-creating the classic Britney look from the days of her monster hit single, “…Baby One More Time.” Finally, a helicopter touches down. And after nearly a year of rumors, Spears makes it official. She’s coming to Las Vegas. But why Vegas? For Spears, settling down and working in one place has more than a little appeal. “When you tour, it’s so hard on the body,” she says. “I look back and I don’t know how I did it. Being in one place is cool. It’s a more stable environment”— not only for her but for her two sons, Sean Preston, 8, and Jayden, 7, who will also be making the trips. “Las Vegas is a fun place,” she adds. “There is so much going on. The energy here is incredible. You feel it walking through the casino. Everybody is here to have a good time.” Spears admits the schedule will be grueling (she’ll perform 96 shows over the next two years at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino and will be splitting time between Los Angeles and Las Vegas). But she’s ready. Since last summer, she’s been working with a personal trainer up to four times a week. She’s in amazing shape. To prove it, Spears tweeted a photo of herself in a blue bikini while on set filming the music video for her single, “Work Bitch.” “I have not been this sore in my entire life,” she confesses. “When I started working out, I was sore for like, three days. I could hardly move. I’m really challenging myself with the choreography.” Spears is focused and determined to show the world a different side of herself when she takes the Planet Hollywood stage. Spears says she wants “Britney: Piece of Me” to be high-energy (a concert in a nightclub-like atmosphere with VIP tables and bottle service) and high fashion (she’s bringing back some of her iconic looks). “Whenever I do a show, I’m really keen on making it a show,” Spears says. “I love

to dance and perform. Because it’s Vegas, I want to do something different. This is the perfect place to bring it to the next level.”

ritney Jean Spears was born in B McComb, Mississippi, and grew up in

rural Kentwood, Louisiana. The second of three children born to Lynne and James Spears, she attended dance classes, excelled in gymnastics and even in grade school sought to be the center of attention. “Ever since I was little girl, I never could sit still. I was always doing something. Jumping up and down, moving around. I was annoying,” she recalls laughing. “People would come to the house and say ‘Does she ever sit down? Does she ever calm down?’ My mom was just so used to it because that was the way I was. I always loved to pretend I was onstage performing.” Spears says there wasn’t one specific artist she admired growing up, but she counts Otis Redding, Sheryl Crow and Whitney Houston among her musical influences. “It’s hard to pick one person. I looked up to so many, actually. I do love Shania Twain,” she says of the country superstar who performs just across the street from her at Caesars Palace. Spears rose to fame swiftly. Following The Mickey Mouse Club, she started working with an agent, cutting demo tapes. Eventually one caught the ear of music executives at Jive Records, who signed her to a contract. Her first album, ...Baby One More Time, was released in January 1999. It debuted at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 charts and was double-platinum within a month. The album went on to sell more than 10 million copies that year. “It was kind of like a dream,” she recalls. “I’m from a small town and I wasn’t expecting anything. When it happened, it was kind of surreal. I got so busy traveling that I was oblivious to it all. I didn’t even realize what was happening. It was like a dream that I never woke up from. It was pretty spectacular.” Her follow-up album, Oops!... I Did It Again, was released just a year later. It topped the charts: Spears was rocketing her way to superstardom with everything that came with it. She embraced her fame, even reveled in it, using the MTV Video Music Awards stage for some of her most memorable

performances. In 2000, she appeared in a sequined flesh-colored bodysuit. A year later, she performed with an albino python draped across her shoulders, and in 2003, she opened the show singing Madonna’s “Like a Virgin.” When the song ended, she shared a kiss with Madonna. For her, it was all art. Nothing more. These days, Spears’ absence from the VMAs is news. She skipped this year’s award show in Brooklyn. Instead, Spears was in an L.A. dance studio preparing for Vegas. Yet a notorious VMA performance by Miley Cyrus (the two collaborated on Miley’s album, BANGERZ) drew comparisons to the young Spears. Then weeks after the VMAs, the two appeared in a scene together on the MTV special Miley: The Movement, with Cyrus saying, “Everyone takes the VMAs so seriously. You’re always gonna make people talk. You might as well make them talk for two weeks, rather than two seconds.”

“Whenever I d o a show,I’m really

keen on making it a show. Vegas is

the perfect place to bring it to

the next level.”

eople have been talking about P Britney for nearly two decades, so Spears

says she can relate to the struggles of today’s young stars. “It’s important to have a group of people around you who can keep you down to earth,” Spears confides. “It’s a mind-altering experience when you become a pop star at such a young age. Some people are made for it and some people aren’t. If you keep good friends around you and stay grounded, you’ll be OK.” Spears, who has pretty much lived her entire life in the public eye and been followed by pesky photographers, is asked whether she’s grown accustomed to the constant attention. “This is the thing,” she replies. “I’m actually really shy. I don’t like having my picture taken." Spears continues, “I don’t like the attention, but it’s something that comes with success. I’ve accepted the paparazzi are going to be there; I just try to wear the same thing every day so I become uninteresting.” As to whether she follows the tabloids that write about her: “I’ve never done that. I know there is rude stuff out there, but I choose not to be a part of it. It’s all kind of silly.” Instead Spears chooses to focus on her art. “I’m really excited,” she says. “‘Piece of Me’ is a labor of love. I can’t wait to perform it.”

Wo r l d S e r i e S o f P o k e r N oW o f f e r S r e a l - M o N e y G a M e S o N l i N e by Matt Villano There’s a new poker room in Nevada, and it’s big enough for millions of users at a time. The World Series of Poker and Caesars Interactive Entertainment began running the online room in September. It’s the WSOP’s first foray into real-money online poker, and only the second fully licensed poker site of its kind in Nevada. Available at WSOP.com, the platform offers a variety of cash games, as well as Sit & Go, satellite and multi-table tournaments with buy-ins as low as a single penny. Games are available for players in Nevada, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Bill Rini, the director of online poker for WSOP.com, expects the online tables to create new players and generate even greater interest in the sport. “Online poker is a great way for new players to learn the

game and existing players to sharpen their skills,” he says. “We’re excited to be offering this to our customers.” In addition, Rini reveals that players will receive points in the WSOP.com loyalty program, called the Action Club, for every hand played. He notes that these points can be redeemed for cash to buy into future online games, or easily converted into points in Caesars Entertainment’s Total Rewards program to be used for discounted rooms, dining credits or show tickets. Rini adds that the site will host a number of official tournaments for players to win seats in the WSOP’s $10,000 buy-in Main Event next summer at Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. “We can help people get to the Main Event for the price of a movie ticket,” he says. All-in indeed.

Whether you want to have a cocktail party in your suite or in your home, here are tips to make your party sparkle.

May Your Holidays Shine Bright Like a

SPA RK L IN G & S P I R I t E d Co C K tA I L S Mixologist Adam Rains, from Gordon Ramsay Pub & Grill at Caesars Palace, spices spirits with garden-fresh herbs and aromatics to intensify the flavors of his cocktail creations. The Diamond Fizz (below) is his high-brow version of the French 75. “This cocktail is delicate, fragrant and zippy,” he says of combining Asian botanicals and fresh Thai Basil Blossoms with Bombay Sapphire East Gin. His Silver Ceres (left), named after the Roman goddess of the harvest, combines two types of silver tequila with Kaffir limes, creating the drink’s “bright citrus character.”

hey say “What happens in Vegas… stays in Vegas!” but not necessarily when you’re entertaining. We enlisted celebrity party planner Wade Williams, owner of Picnic Catering & Events in Los Angeles and New York City, to create a stunning, custom cocktail party for us.

“The holidays are a time for you to show off your entertaining skills,” says Williams, who has planned fashionable soirées for Oprah Winfrey, Naomi Campbell, Heidi Klum and Zach Braff. “I always try to find new and inventive ways to make every event unique.”

S

o even if your party prep is a bit rusty, don’t fret: Williams shares his top tips for creating a stylish cocktail party that will bring a little Vegas glitz into your home.

DiamonD Décor Let’s be honest, your home will be overflowing with friends and family for months. People often make the mistake of thinking that a holiday is only one day when it’s actually three months of parties and dinners. If you’re entertaining at home, make sure your holiday décor reflects a theme. Unwrap and dust off your fine china and glassware, iron the linen napkins and tablecloths, and break out your silver and heirloom serving pieces. Atmosphere counts.

S i LV E r & G o L D As an alternative to the traditional blue, red and green, try gold and silver. Small pops of gemstone colors such as ruby, sapphire and emerald will add elegance and richness to your décor. D a r E to D a z z L E The more over-the-top, the better. Visit your favorite fabric store to add bright or glittery elements to your table. Use rich velvet, sheer organza or taffeta as a palate to set the tone for your centerpieces and ornamental accents.

n at u r a L E L E m E n t S Simple touches such as flocking branches and spray-painting pinecones in gold or silver tones will make your floral centerpiece eye-catching. B E B o L D Your friends get invites to dozens of cocktail parties. Make sure your invitation stands out. Everyone wants to feel like a VIP—and you can set the tone as soon as they open the envelope. Create an invitation that makes your par t y one not to be missed.

SuBtLE SurpriSES Keep your menu simple. If you usually prepare large amounts of food, scale down and serve bite-size appetizers. If you do serve a full meal, create custom menu cards and place them at each table setting. For more inspiration, try visiting Web sites like Etsy, Pinterest or Craft Gawker.

Music and décor play a big part in setting the tone for a successful dinner party.

Why plaid? It’s the obvious question for a guy who looks like he just stepped off a Mad Men set. “This used to be my grandfather’s suit. He was an amateur magician and a big influence on me, so it’s in homage to him. My grandmother made this from her couch,” explains Mac King, displaying the wry humor you can expect in his show, which he jokingly describes as “an extravaganza with dancing girls and monkeys.” In reality, it’s a comedy show with magic. King performs a number of sleight-of-hand card tricks, makes dollar bills rise from the ashes and baits an audience with tricks that include catching a live goldfish out of midair. Further fishy hijinks follow. “Hopefully, when you’re leaving, you say, ‘That’s the most amazing magic show I’ve ever seen—and that’s the funniest comedy show.’ I want it to be both.”
